Almost one year ago we presented Swap plugin here. Now we renamed it to Swapper and ported to Compiz++ (future Compiz 0.9).

Just to remember that it allows you to swap the geometry of two windows. Basically we changed Switcher plugin to swap active window with another window.

Swapper could be inserted on new Compiz if everybody likes it. Waiting for replies!

For some, the great desktop effects of Compiz-Fusion (the OpenGL window and compositing manager form

For some, the great desktop effects of Compiz-Fusion (the OpenGL window and compositing manager formerly known as Beryl) were the reason they tried Ubuntu in the first place. Desktop effects are not enabled by default, since they might unsettle older systems, and for many users they are just an unwanted distraction. If you have them running, you’ve already figured out how to enable them (if not, go to System > Preferences > Appearance, go to the Visual Effects tab, and choose either “Normal” or “Extra“), but you may be wondering how to take control over them.

First off, install compizconfig-settings-manager, as this is what lets you customise basically every aspect of your desktop effects. Not only can you choose what animations you want for certain tasks (like minimise and close window, etc), but you can edit how they work. That means you can speed up or slow down animated effects, as well as change the settings for every animation plug-in. You can disable some parts of Compiz-Fusion that you don’t particularly care for, and enable a whole lot of other features you never even knew existed. CompizConfg Settings Manager will reside in System > Preferences.

Compiz-Fusion ships with a bunch of plugins (compiz-fusion-plugins-main), but you may need to install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra to get more awesome effects, like Burn (it seems Ubuntu now installs that package, but if it isn’t marked as installed in Synaptic, then you’ll need to install it).

You can also install compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported – “an extended collection of plugins which have received the least amount of review and are the most likely to be problematic on your system.” As you can see, this is a use at your own risk package, but if the plugins you have aren’t enough, you can always give these a try.

To get a system tray icon that gives you easy access to settings, install fusion-icon. To run Compiz Fusion Icon, go to Applications > System Tools. You’ll find this invaluable for restarting Compiz-Fusion if it has crashed, as it has a Reload Window Manager option on the menu.

For adding and changing advanced window border and titlebar themes, you will need to install emerald. You’ll find Emerald Theme Manager in System > Preferences, and the themes it uses have an .emerald extension. Many themes offer semi-transparent glass-like titlebars, animated control buttons, and shadow and glow around the window borders. They can vary wildly, with themes for basically any taste. You are bound to find a few that you find stunning, so do a web search for “emerald themes”, and download some and import them. You will see previews of them once installed, and all you have to do is click on a preview to enable that theme. And any you don’t like, you can delete. What’s more, you can actually edit installed themes, and save them as your own.

This should be all you need to get you going on the path to greater desktop effects. Have a good look around in the settings manager, and try out some of the cool features not enabled by default. And have a play around with changing some of your plug-ins, like turn the flames of Burn purple and yellow, or add heaps more wobble to Magic Lamp and make it last much longer (that actually looks really good on minimise and restore). Then find some Emerald themes to import, and if you find one you love, but don’t like the titlebar font, or want more opacity, you can edit it. You can control basically every aspect of how your windows are decorated, so if you can’t find any themes you like 100%, then make your own!

aptitude install compiz-gnome compizconfig-settings-manager fusion-icon

aptitude install avant-window-navigator avant-window-navigator-data

Primero vamos a instalar Compiz Fusion

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager emerald

Cubo de escritorio;

Rotar cubo y;

Saludos.

I remember a couple of years back when I started using GNU/Linux: Ubuntu’s 7.04 was probably t

I remember a couple of years back when I started using GNU/Linux: Ubuntu’s 7.04 was probably the flagship of the GNU/Linux movement, encouraging people to use “Linux for human beings” (that probably meant I wasn’t a human being since I had been using Debian Sarge for a couple of months before the 7.04 release) and the Compiz project (and to some smaller extent, the Beryl project) was surely the most important eye-candy feature the movement offered newcomers, showing it was possible to have a beautiful desktop outside the mainstream operating systems.

I was attracted too, I have to say. I remember playing around with di3go’s recently acquired laptop and it’s X Server configuration (back in those days running Compiz was little less than magic craft specially on an ATI video card) until I got the cube rotation effect working. I then bought my own laptop but Compiz couldn’t fully run on my integrated ATI video card (I only had the wobbly and some fade effects) so it wasn’t until I bought my new PC at the end of that year that I could run desktop effects at a reasonable performance. Nevertheless, I was a big fan of the project even throughout the months I couldn’t run it myself. We used Compiz heavily at the FLISOL that year and the year after (2007 and 2008) to attract people to the Linux adoption.

Looking back at those days, now from a different perspective of the meaning of GNU/Linux, i.e. as a Free Software activist instead of just a Linux User, I recognized a subtle flaw on the usage of Compiz as a project to attract masses to the Free Software movement which I consider should be fixed for upcoming Free Software events like Software Freedom Day and next year’s FLISOL: we usually promoted the use of Compiz with the non free drivers provided either by NVidia or ATI. Even without specifically stating people should install proprietary drivers, we didn’t specifically state people should use free drivers for their video cards neither, which is harmful for those projects and for the Free Software movement in general. The reason we had to use proprietary drivers was simple, though: it’s a lot easier to get things rolling on the proprietary drivers, plus the free drivers lack of some of the latest capabilities offered by vendor-provided drivers not because the programmers on the free driver projects are not as good as the companies’ ones, but because the companies won’t release specifications in time and most of the work of free driver projects are done by reverse engineering. I myself ran Compiz Fusion on propietary NVidia drivers on my Frugalware Linux before I changed to KDE 4.0 and it wasn’t until ATI’s Catalyst driver dropped support on my laptop’s integrated video card on latest drivers that I switched to radeon free driver on it, and I haven’t got Compiz running on this driver yet.

So yes, it’s true: it’s not as easy to set up Compiz Fusion on free drivers as it is to set it on the proprietary ones maybe just because there’s a lot more documentation on the web for the former ones. But then if we can’t get those working for demonstrations, it’s a good time to practice one of Richard Stallman’s most important teachings: if you are to choose between showing software you cannot run on a free platform and not showing it, do not show it.

And yes, you may not agree with me. I expect to read comments from people saying that it’s better to use “semi-free” software to bring people “closer” to freedom. But is freedom a fuzzy concept? or is it binary? You are always free to choose your definition of freedom.

I must add a disclaimer here: I’m a big fan of the Compiz Fusion project and I’m still trying to get it running again on my radeon driver (it’s on my never-ending TODO list, and I’ll post about that if I get it working) even though di3go already dropped the enthusiasm on it (he claims to hate desktop effects actually ).

I have heard a lot of good feedback and saw really nice screenshots of Mint 7 Gloria, both Gnome and

I have heard a lot of good feedback and saw really nice screenshots of Mint 7 Gloria, both Gnome and KDE versions. I had about 15GB of free space on a Western Digital USB drive and thought I’d go ahead and try it out. I already had Ubuntu and previous versions of Mint installed on the same drive. I booted up my Mint 6 system, downloaded the iso and burned it onto a CD with no issues. The computer I was and still am using is a Sony Vaio VGN-CR35G laptop with an ATI graphics card.

The installation itself was a breeze. No different from other processes I’ve gone through. The way my drive is set up is not unusual. I have 10GB partitions for the linux distros that I try out and a single /home partitions that is slightly larger. During the first boot, I was impressed with how great and streamlined it looks from login screen to desktop. I have no issues with drivers and the wireless works without any fuss, just like other versions. I feel that the run time from boot to desktop is faster and the annoying beep at shutdown isn’t there anymore. I’m excited to plug this drive into other computers in the house to see if compatibility would be an issue. I will have to write another entry on that.

Overall, I’d have to say that this is the easiest install that I have ever done. If I remember correctly, it is the quickest finish too. The artwork that comes with it is top caliber as always. You can never have too much eye candy. Compiz runs and works by default, which is great. I can’t really say anything more other than I wish I could sync this with my Ubuntu One account. Currenty, UO is in its beta stage and can only be used with a Jaunty system. Hopefully, that gap will be bridged in the near future. At the rate things go right now, that’s probably soon.

sudo apt-get install build-essential subversion git-core libtool compiz-dev libcompizconfig0-dev libgtk2.0-dev libavutil-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libjpeg62-dev libtiff4-dev libavutil49 compiz-fusion-bcop

Download OpenCV

Procuratevi l’ultima versione di OpenCV:

svn co https://opencvlibrary.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/opencvlibrary/tags/latest_tested_snapshot

Dopo poco dovreste aver scaricato l’ultimo snapshot disponibile.

Installazione OpenCV

Come dalla migliore tradizione:

./configure
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig -v
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Download Plugin

Per scaricare il plugin utilizzate git:

git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/klange/headtracking

Installazione Plugin

Al solito, siamo tradizionali:

cd headtracking
make
sudo make install

facedetect.c: In function ‘headtrackThread’:
facedetect.c:264: error: too few arguments to function ‘cvRetrieveFrame’

sudo apt-get install compiz-fusion-bcop
make clean

Happy cube a tutti!

Yeah… it’s possible because i dump my ATI VGA and change it with NVIDA VGA 7200 GS. I use Ubuntu 9.04. Wow… Very impressive 3D effect

In Ubuntu jaunty 9.04 that’s not the default behaviour. So install all the wanted widgets then right click on them and in Window select the following:

Sticky
Widget
Keep below

If as soon as you select the Widget settings the widget disappear it means that the Widget layer plugin is activated in your compiz fusion options. Inactivate this option in CompizConfig Settings Manager.

The goal of the widget layer is to have the widgets displayed on top of all your windows when pressing a special key – F9 is the default key.
