So, I’ll be honest–this blog is probably going to be extremely boring. I’m not on

So, I’ll be honest–this blog is probably going to be extremely boring. I’m not one to write boring blogs, but this one is really being written out of necessity. Now, I could just go ahead and write this out on paper…but since I’m a geek, I figured one online would be more interesting. In addition to that, I figure that, for at least SOME people, it could be informative as well, which is always good.

Here’s my little intro, and a description of my whole ordeal up until this point: Hi, my name is Renae, I’m 20 years old, and I get migraines.

And not just those “oh my god, my head is KILLING me” migraines–I mean, I DO get those–but I get optic migraines as well. Most people don’t know what these are (honestly, neither did I until about 5 months ago), so I’ll explain.

Basically, an optic migraine is kind of what it sounds like–a migraine with your eyes. But the ones that I get (and this is, apparently, how they usually occur) don’t have any pain associated with them. I’ll basically get a horizontal lightning bolt-like flashing in my eyes…kind of like when someone takes a picture of you, and you get the camera flash stuck in your eyes. It makes it so that I can still see, but I can’t focus on words very well, and it lasts for about 15 minutes or so.
If you have a very severe one–which I did, in April of this year–it can even affect your speech.

I work in customer service (doing troubleshooting and taking orders for kitchen appliances over the phone), and in April, I got my first–and so far, only–severe optic migraine.
I had gotten optic migraines before, but only with the flashing in my eyes. I associated it to dehydration, and didn’t really think anything of it. I would just drink a lot of water, and of course, after about 15 minutes, it would go away.
With this one, though, I was in the middle of talking to a customer, taking their order, and I started slurring my speech and mixing up my words and syllables. I was trying to tell them the total of their order, and I just couldn’t get the numbers right. I don’t remember what their actual total was, but, for example, if their total was $56.22, I kept telling them their total was $26.52, or “25. 62″…that sort of thing.
Eventually, I concentrated extremely hard, got their CORRECT total out, and put them on hold…at which point, I proceeded to freak out.
Everything in my head felt okay–I was able to comprehend everything that I was saying and everything that was going on around me–but for some reason, it was like my brain had been rewired, and I couldn’t say out loud what I was thinking inside my head.

After talking to my supervisor, and telling her what was going on, they called the paramedics. By the time they got to my workplace, the optic migraine had ended, so when they checked all of my vitals, nothing seemed out of the ordinary except for an increased heart rate (which is to be expected, granted the circumstances). I opted not to take a ride in the ambulance (which can cost a lot on a medical bill, depending on your insurance), but had my boyfriend pick me up and take me to the ER, just to make sure that I hadn’t had a mini stroke or seizure (or possibly something worse).

The ER doctors examined my eyes, gave me a CAT scan, a basic blood test, and a urinalysis, and the results?

Nothing.

They said that everything came back completely fine, but they suggested that I go see my PCP the next day for a follow-up, which is exactly what I did…and she couldn’t find anything, either (although, I DO have to give her SOME credit–she said she really didn’t know what it was, but that there was a possibility that it was migraines…or a mini seizure).
So she referred me to both an ophthalmologist and a neurologist, and she also told me I should get an MRI done, since a CAT scan isn’t as in-depth as an MRI.
If you’ve ever had a neurologist appointment, you’ll know that it’s not an easy feat to accomplish. You have to schedule the appointment at LEAST a month in advance. So, I wound up getting the MRI the same day I saw my PCP, and saw an ophthalmologist a week or two later.

Results from the ophthalmologist?

Again, nothing. She said I had no disease in my eyes, and couldn’t understand why this had happened to me, but said that I should definitely see a neurologist.

Finally, the neurology appointment came, about 2 months after the whole ordeal started. I go into the office, sit down, and wait for the doctor. She comes in, looks over my MRIs, and tells me that she doesn’t see anything abnormal on them. I described to her the symptoms that I had, and after about two seconds, she told me that I get “complex migraines” (another popular term for “optic migraines”), and proceeded to explain to me what they were.

So, after thousands of dollars in medical bills and two months of thinking I might be dying, I found out that I got migraines.

Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off.

But definitely glad to have an answer.
The neurologist, Dr. Lara Katzin (an extremely nice woman), told me to pay attention to these migraines over the next few months, see if they become more frequent, and she scheduled a follow-up appointment with me.

Which brings me to the reason why I have started this blog.
The follow-up appointment was this past Tuesday (Nov. 24), and yes, I have been getting them (along with traditional headache-like migraines) more frequently. I started out getting them maybe once or twice a month, and now I get them about once or twice a week. Dr. Katzin prescribed a migraine medication to me (don’t know the name of it off the top of my head, and I don’t have the paperwork in front of me…if anyone’s interested to know what it is, just leave me a comment, and I’ll get back to you later), and suggested that I start a “migraine diary,” seeing as optic migraines, like traditional migraines, can be triggered by different things such as lights, sounds, and smells. That way, I can see if there’s something triggering them, so I can possibly control them (and therefore, not have to be on medication).

And, here we are.
My Migraine Diary.

I’ll be documenting each one that I get, and what I was doing at the time, to see if there is any kind of pattern to it.
I figured I would make it public so as to try and help people, like I said before. Because I’m sure that there are people out there who, just like me, get optic migraines, but don’t have any idea what they actually are (which can be pretty terrifying).

If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask–I’m an open book, honestly, and I’ll tell you all that I know!

The thirteenth arrondissement of southeastern Paris is situated on the Left Bank of the Seine River.

The thirteenth arrondissement of southeastern Paris is situated on the Left Bank of the Seine River. Its land area is relatively large by Parisian standards, and measures more than two and three quarter square miles (over seven square kilometers). This district has a population over one hundred seventy thousand and is home to about ninety thousand jobs. Both population and employment figures are growing, largely due an influx of Asian immigrants.

Les Olympiades is a residential high-rise district built well over thirty years ago on a huge, elevated pedestrian esplanade complete with a shopping mall, the Pagode (Pagoda) at the center. To many people this complex looks like a smaller version of La Defense, Europe’s largest business district, situated just west of Paris. A driverless Metro (subway) feeds the complex, running every four minutes during the extended rush hour. Nearby is the huge Paris Rive Gauche project built on and near old railroad yards. Once again we are talking mostly high-rises. If that’s your bag, be my guest.

The Bibliotheque nationale de France (National Library of France) is another resident of the new thirteenth district. It was founded by Charles V in the mid Fourteenth Century at the Louvre Museum, described in our companion article on the First Arrondissement. Later the library moved to its own quarters in the same district. The new library, said to look like an open book, opened to the public in late 1996. Despite being located in a modest neighborhood, accessing library materials costs money. A famous French historian was refused a library card. Although there are many complaints the library does contain ten million volumes.

The Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital started out as a gunpowder factory and was converted to a dumping ground for the Parisian poor, serving as a prison for prostitutes, the criminally insane, and others of that ilk. During the French Revolution many prostitutes were freed but other residents-inmates were murdered. On the upside the hospital’s reknown professor, Jean-Martin Charcot, nicknamed “the Napoleon of the neuroses” has been considered the founder of modern neurology. Furthermore it was the site of Paris’s first vaccinations, way back in 1800. La Salpetriere has become a teaching hospital. This was where Diana, Princess of Wales, breathed her last. If you are in the neighborhood you should visit the Seventeenth Century Chapelle de la Salpetriere (Hospital Chapel). By the way, the word chapel is misleading as the complex can hold four thousand people.

Unless you are a Princess Diana freak, who can blame you for not wanting to tour a hospital once famous for its rats? Don’t miss the next sight, unknown to many. The Butte-aux-Cailles (literally quails hill) is located in the west end of the district, fairly close to the very busy Place d’Italie. The hill is about 200 feet (65 meters) tall. Cailles was the family name of people who once farmed the land. In 1783 the first hot-air balloon carrying people landed on this little hill. It was one of the strongholds of the Paris Commune in 1871, memorialized in a city square by that name. There has been so much excavation that the hill can’t support the high-rises that mar so much of this arrondissement and so much of the “new” Paris. So you’ll have to be satisfied with the co-op restaurants, trendy bars, and nightclubs that haven’t erased the village atmosphere. The Butte is home to an art-deco public piscine (swimming pool) fed by a natural hot spring. You can even enjoy vaudeville and Brazilian music. If you fall in love with a little house in the neighborhood remember, it was once inexpensive.

The Gare d’Austerlitz (Austerlitz Station) is one of the most important Parisian railway stations. It was named for a small Czech town in which the sorely outnumbered French and allied troops under Napoleon defeated the armies of Austria, Russia, and Great Britain in 1805. This railway station was first built in 1840 and extended a generation later. There are plans to rehabilitate and upgrade Austerlitz station doubling its capacity by 2020. The complex is moderately attractive but if you aren’t a railroad buff, don’t go out of your way to see it.

The Manufacture des Gobelins (Gobelins Factory) makes exceptional tapestries and has been doing so for centuries. It supplied the kings of France starting with Louis XIV. The company founder, Jehan Gobelin, discovered a special dye during the Fifteenth Century. Detractors called his company la folie Gobelin (Gobelin’s folly). I guess he showed them. Some of his descendants purchased titles of nobility and abandoned this unnoble trade. Other family members branched out to the tapestry business and later into carpets and upholstery. The complex includes a museum offering guided tours.

Of course you don’t want to tour Paris without sampling fine French wine and food. In my article I Love French Wine and Food – An Alsace Riesling I reviewed such a wine and suggested a sample menu: Start with Schniederspaetle (Onion Ravioli). For your second course savor Brochet d’I a la creme (Pike in White Wine and Cream Sauce). And as dessert indulge yourself with Strudel aux Pommes (Apple Strudel). Your Parisian sommelier (wine steward) will be happy to suggest appropriate wines to accompany each course.

Given that people of all ages watch football on TV or in stadiums now days, we wanted to help everyone understand what is going on with the Referees (if you don’t already know).

Below, we’ve attached a photo that diagrams the signals that the Refs use in a football game. So whenever you see one of them use a signal like one of these, you’ll know what he’s trying to say!

HOUSTON — Tracy McGrady returned to practice with the Houston Rockets for the first time since microfracture surgery in February yesterday, but the seven-time all-star still doesn’t know when he’ll play.

McGrady said he can play now, but Rockets coach Rick Adelman has said he’s not ready. Adelman missed practice yesterday to attend to a personal matter. Assistant coach Elston Turner said: “It’s a process” to get McGrady back.

McGrady was set to undergo an MRI on his surgically repaired left knee yesterday which he says is “irrelevant,” but that the team wants to review any decision on his return.

The Forbidden City in Beijing is no longer forbidden territory anymore. And we should be grateful for that. Why? If you have had the honor to visit this extraordinary place, you will understand.

This stunning complex of imperial buildings, right in the heart of the Chinese capital, is one of the most magical sights in the world. It’s so overwhelming that once you’ve been there, you’ll keep talking about it whenever you have the opportunity.

Let’s look at some facts.

The Forbidden City is the former palace of Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was planned and built from 1407 to 1420, and for its design and layout principles of Feng Shui were used. An estimated 200,000 workers helped to construct it.

The numbers explain why so many people were needed: there are 800 buildings with a total of 8,886 rooms. The word ‘city’ is not misused as it measures 961 meters from north to south and 753 meters from east to west.

A 52-meter wide moat (6 meters deep) and an 8-meter high wall around the complex kept intruders (and ordinary people!) away until the fall of the Empire in 1912.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the buildings are used as a museum.

Again, the numbers are impressive. The Palace Museum holds no less than 340,000 pieces of ceramics and porcelain as well as 50,000 items of paintings. I regret to say that once you’re there, you won’t have time to see everything, but even a quick review can make you speechless.

The sheer size of the complex is impressive, but a problem at the same time. How can you make the most out of your visit?

If you go there on a guided tour, the guide will likely follow the middle path to save time. In two hours time you’ll see the most important parts of the city, but since there’s so much to pay attention to, you will hardly have time to stop.

If you go there alone, use a full day and come early. Don’t plan to visit any other sights on that day, just the Forbidden City. If you take your time and enjoy what you see, you can spend half a day and still only see half of it.

Another good idea is renting the audio guide at the entrance.

Don’t be intimidated by the crowd at the entrance. Yes, it’s very touristy and it can take a while before you are in, but once people have got their ticket the crowd splits up in several groups.

Take a rest in the imperial gardens. Jingshan Park, with an artifical hill, is the most famous. You’ll feel an emperor for a second when you sit there!

Finally, if you want to get into the mood, you could watch The Last Emperor, the first Hollywood movie for which the government of China allowed to film inside the complex.

The Forbidden City is right in the heart of the city, so it’s easy to reach from the place you’re staying. For the best deals on hotels in Beijing, check out http://www.hotelscombined.com/City/Beijing.htm?a_aid=4d780272

Eternal Jewel City A lot of words come to mind when one mentions Bangkok, the South-east Asian capit

Eternal Jewel City
A lot of words come to mind when one mentions Bangkok, the South-east Asian capital of one of the most jewelled countries in the world, Thailand. The one thing that does surprise people who visit the region is not only its ornate historical path that unravels a labyrinth of secrecy and mysticism but also a timeless channel revealing a phronetic combination of Thai religion and spiritualism. Indeed, even the ceremonial name of the city itself spells out its culture pure and rich in depth. Translated in full, gives us the following verse-like poem:

“The city of angels, the city great and eternal jewel city. The impregnable city of the God Indra. Grand capital of the world endowed with nine heavenly gems. The happy city, abounding with an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where the god reincarnate reigns. The City given by Indra and built by Vishnukam.”

If you are looking for a mini-tour of Bangkok, aimed at painting a brief insight into visiting the city, look no further. From the moment you arrive at the new state-of-the-art Suvarnabhumi international airport, you will notice Thailand is definitely the “land of smiles”, the broad smiles you’ll receive from the Thais of all walks of life really are genuine! After checking-in to your centrally located hotel, you’ll be able to connect to almost anywhere within the city. During your stay in Bangkok you must visit the Grand Palace complex and surrounding Sunamluang Park Gardens. The complex contains the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha which reveres the holiest of relics; a 45 centimetre Buddha carved in green emerald. The complex itself is the official home to the King of Siam and you can also see the Royal Funeral Hall and Royal Coronation Hall within these walls. Outside the complex and surrounding the Sunamluang Park are markets and boutiques allowing you to pick up those uniquely Thai gifts such as handicrafts, Thai antiques and Thai sweets.

Gentle Sunset and Sunrise Cruise

Returning to your hotel in the late afternoon gives you time for a room-break before going out for your Bangkok Dinner Cruise on the Chao Praya River. This cruise takes you for a gentle slow ride up the Chao Praya River from sunset and onwards, passing the Temple of Dawn followed by a magnificent twilight view of the Grand Palace Complex. An idyllic way to unwind. You are then guaranteed a perfect night’s sleep in the comforts of your air-conditioned suite room. The following morning will mean an early rise if you are going to catch sunrise at the famous floating market; Thai style canoes laden with colourful fruits and vegetables, meats and sweets and freshly cut flowers are on sale as the boutique-boats gently glide up the canals for all who wish to buy and see. After another room-break at the hotel, the afternoon agenda offers the beautiful Rose Garden Tour which includes not only the splendours of the gardens, but also a chance to see different styles of Thai housing, Thai handicrafts and how they are made. More boutiques allow the visitors to buy those special souvenirs, memories of a trip you won’t want to forget. Then back to your hotel for a Thai or a Japanese style gourmet cuisine dinner.

Hotels

Ideal for convenient access to the whole of Bangkok, the Tai-Pan hotel just off the Asoke and Sukhumvit roads is perfectly located. This Green Leaf certified hotel-to mention just a few of its accreditations and set off “away from it all”, features 146 spacious rooms and suites of high class standard. Catering to all the needs of travelers or business people alike, no luxuries are spared for guests and rooms. Other facilities include an all purpose gym and a pool for those who either want to complete a workout fix or just relax by the poolside.
