Dear all,
I visited the place Rajapalayam, Virthunagar DT, TN on 30.11.2009.
I and our member Mr.Arumuga Perumal visited few places in the town and met
few persons.
Rajapalayam is a small town which is a centre for almost 20 nearby
villages. Students from nearby villages come to rajapalayam for the higher
secondary and college courses.
Request and Requirement:
There is a computer centre which was established by few well wishers. They
have 7 computers with sufficient benches, chairs, fans and tube light.
3 computers are old computers which were donated by some well wishers.
5 new computers are donated by Kuwait raja makkal samooga iyakkam,
Rajapalayam.
This centre was utilised by the students and Women self help group.
Mr.Palani Kumar (differentially abled person) was teaching basics of
computer. Well Wishers paid Rs.1500 to Mr.Palani Kumar for 2 years. But
they were not able to pay the salary for the past 6 months. Finally this
centre is closed now.Palanikumar is not able to do another job. At present
he is doing some handloom work (Kai Raattai-plz see the photo) and earns
Rs.500 to 600 per month.
If we are able to pay Rs.1500 per month, the centre will support the
students and village people. It also helps Mr.Palanikumar.
Electricity Bill will be paid by the village people. The centre name will be on Indiasudar and/or our partner organisations.
Photos are available @

Action2020 partner organisations had helped Mr.Muruganandam a physically challenged to set up a Internet cafe in trichy . During the first Unconference we had discussed about this project . On 25th July our YHM team had a visit to Mr.Muruganandam place .He was very happy and excited to see us .As per the discussion with Muruganandam he needs the following help from us

1) The Internet cafe he has started has to be registered .He has asked about the procedure it seems that no one knows about it

2) We had provided 2 systems to him initially for the Internet cafe out of which one system has some problem in the mother board so it crashes frequently .It would be great if we can provide him a replacement

3)A new Internet Cafe has been opened near his shop .There are 5 systems in the new shop so people have started to go there .So if we provide him with 2 more systems he will get customer as well as he has a plans to teach MS OFFICE, TALLY, C,C++, JAVA,PHOTO SHOP & AUTO CAD to the students in the village which will create a part time income

P.S: I have attached the photos taken Plz have a look at it

Some smart aleck decided that the stone facade along engin bridge was too boring. That, I agree. But that (or maybe another) smart aleck decided to commission some half-fuck painter (I refuse to call him ‘artist’) to do up the place… into a freaking, ugly mural!

Even the murals in children homes have much better standard than this!! I mean, the pix were so juvenile, there was apparently no cohesion among the elements to hint of a theme (if there is any at all). The colours were mono; no shading AT ALL. Although I don’t really know about colour theory, the colour mix in this mural was definitely an eye sore! The elements were those that even I can draw (what’s with the black guy stabbed by POSB logo, the box with 2 circles a.k.a car, a bowl and a black shirt??)

It was totally a moronic idea to paint on the rock facade!! I doubt even Michaelangelo could draw well on that!!

Statues, yes, carved into the rock or placed on them. Landscape, like they did outside Computer Centre on the other side of the engin bridge, ok. Even putting cardboard cows would also look MUCH BETTER than painting (and note: using very cheapo-looking paint) onto the rocks!!

What the hell were they thinking?!?!

I am so… gonna write a complaint letter to OED for ruining what was originally a good (although lok-kok) facade. I mean, the idea of rock facades along a bridge was quite novel, nevermind it was collecting dust and looked musty.

Like what my lecturer from RVI said, SG is still far from having street art. He lamented those along SG River were disastrous. Well, I think those along SG River are supreme art pieces compared to this… this… UGLY THING.

ARGGGHHHHH!!!

p/s: End up I didn’t complain, cos I dunno who/what to complain. So I posted the pic onto omy.sg. ya… haha…

After about three decades of an inward focus, the Indian pharmaceutical industry recently seems to have understood the importance of exports. This is due to declining profit margins and the extremely price-competitive nature of the domestic Indian pharmaceutical market. Boosted by the reduced manufacturing costs, India’s pharmaceutical exports grew from $1.9 million in 1999 to $4.7 billion in 2006 (according to World Trade Atlas). Growing at a CAGR of 22.7% over the last few years (according to the government’s draft National Pharmaceutical policy for 2006), exports at present account for over 30% of the industry’s total revenue. At present, India exports pharmaceuticals to more than 200 countries with the vast majority, by value, being destined for the developed economies of the west, particularly US which accommodates 28% of India’s total pharma exports. Apart from Russia, Germany, UK & China, Indian pharma industry is also evaluating opportunities in developing economies including Brazil, Mexico, Australia, south-east Asian countries, and countries of Africa and the Middle East. According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Indian companies will capture at least 30% of the aforementioned market. Also, coupled with the amount of mergers, acquisitions, technological licensing agreements and other collaborations, we can safely state that the future is looking bright for Indian pharmaceutical exports.B&E,4ps & IIPM PublicationFor complete IIPM article click hereSource:- IIPM Editorial, 2006

The expenditure on the prevailing pension system, which caters to a mere 13% of the workforce (majority of them being government servants), if continued, would exceed over 5% of GDP in just a few years. It is estimated that India’s pension bill will rise to a most worrying Rs.350 billion by March 31, 2010. It is in this perspective that the announcements made by RBI for management of pension funds (viz the National Pension Scheme – NPS) by banks is hugely laudable. But critics are shouting hoarse that this is extremely dangerous in the long term for pensioners. Are their fears founded?

Frankly, no! A foolproof mechanism – consisting of failsafe measures like the bank’s net worth not being less than Rs.5 billion, CAR (Capital Adequacy Ratio) not less than 11%, RoA being at least 0.6%, net NPAs being less than 3%, et al – has been laid down leaving minimal scope whatsoever for mismanagement. Moreover, the banks will be required to form a subsidiary (with investment limited to 10% of its paid-up capital and reserves), which will maintain an arm’s length distance from its parent. No doubt, there have been occasions in the past wherein not only the regulated but even the regulators have failed miserably – reason enough for RBI and PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory Development Authority) to continue their Big Brotherly control.

But critically, the absence of a guaranteed minimum pension for participants and the partial mandatory character of NPS can certainly prevent the early achievement of sufficient critical mass to stimulate financial market development. The success of NPS will highly depend on the relative attractiveness of the scheme. Much more of competition should be induced in NPS (as currently there are only four players, SBI, LIC, IDBI Capital & UTI AMC). This will surely help even decrease the relative volatility of the parallel equity and corporate bond markets and improve resilience to shocks. What say to this Dr. Y. V. Reddy?

is accused of corruption? Not much, if you’re in Malaysia. That’s what whistle-blower Mohamad Ramli Manan learned after filing a report to the police last summer detailing corruption and criminal activity on the part of his boss, Zulkipli Mat Noor, the directorgeneral of Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA). For seven months, Ram-li heard nothing. Then his report was anonymously leaked to a non-governmental organization that made the findings public at a press conference in late February. But neither the chief nor the whistleblower was mentioned by name. Thankfully, the editors of Malaysiakini, a gutsy news Web site based in Kuala Lumpur, know an important story when they hear it. After a few hours of working the phones, their reporters not only learned the name of the whistleblower, but also that the accused “senior ACA official” was Zulkipli. They secured an interview with Ramli and later that same day posted a complete account with the headline, “Explosive allegations against ACA chief.” Malaysia’s active community of bloggers quickly pounced on the story. Th e ensuing publicity snowballed so rapidly that the mainstream media were soon compelled to follow suit. Public pressure on the government grew, and one month later Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi announced that Zulkipli was stepping down. This sequence of events – in which Malaysiakini broke a news story that grew so big that other more mainstream media had no choice but to pick it up – perfectly illustrates a pattern that has become typical since the Web site’s establishment eight years ago. Malaysiakini was the creation of Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, two young journalists who left the tabloid newspaper The Sun after it refused to publish their investigation into deadly conditions at one of Malaysia’s migrant labor camps. Believing that political control had corrupted the values of good journalism in the mainstream media, their plan was to bring high-quality, independent reportage to the Internet. Gan and Chandran timed the launch of Malaysiakini to coincide with the country’s 1999 general election. Almost immediately, the Web site gained notoriety by exposing that a Chinese-language newspaper had digitally manipulated a group photo of ruling- party politicians to remove an image of former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Since then, Malaysiakini has proven that it isn’t beholden to the powers that be. According to R. Nadeswaran, current deputy editor of The Sun, if opposition parties hold press conferences, mainstream media outlets would not report on them. “But Malaysiakini would,” he says. “And then other papers cover Malaysiakini.”

In a country where journalists must work under the restrictions of an Internal Security Act, a Sedition Act, and an Official Secrets Act, Malaysian journalists are highly constrained by the law. Although outright censorship is rare, most news organizations are either directly owned by or indirectly linked to the ruling National Front coalition, and avoid reporting on anything that reflects unfavorably on
the government. Online journalists and bloggers are subject to the laws regulating content, but they need not fear losing their permits to publish because, ironically, they are not officially recognized as journalists. Although countries such as Indonesia and Singapore also do not require production licenses for cyber journalists, what makes Malaysiakini unique are its high standards of journalistic professionalism.

Malaysiakini’s reach extends deep into Malaysian society. Although the site has only 5,000 paid subscribers, more than 100,000 different computers access it every day, and Chandran, Malaysiakini’s energetic CEO, estimates that its content reaches about 250,000 readers. It’s not just the number of readers that makes the site powerful, but also who those readers are. One of Malaysiakini’s greatest admirers was also the subject of the Web site’s first major story: Ibrahim, the former deputy prime minister and leading opposition figure who served a six-year prison term on charges widely believed to be politically motivated. “ Malaysiakini has independence (and) credibility,” he says. “It’s the only avenue we have. The other media have an instruction to block us out.” But Editor Steven Gan insists that Malaysiakini is not an opposition publication. According to Gan, Malaysiakini tries to keep the news as factual and as nonpartisan as possible. “The media landscape in Malaysia is highly politicized,” he wrote. “Malaysians have not come across a truly independent media until Malaysiakini came into the picture. That is why the government has tried time and again to dismiss us as an opposition voice.”

As in neighboring Singapore, Malaysian government officials believe that the press should serve the development interests of the nation, and they don’t take kindly to the idea of journalists holding government officials accountable. In response to the ACA corruption exposé, the Internal Security Ministry issued a warning to mainstream newspapers notto quote and publish “anti-governmentarticles” from online news portals – a directive clearly aimed at Malaysiakini. But Malaysiakini not only reported on the circular, tagging it with the headline, “Don’t quote websites and blogs, media told,” it also posted the original letter on its site. It was a brave move in a country where there are plenty of rumors, but little “proof.”

The national campaign would focus on its data services & its network’s speed. The campaign would be available across all media including television, print, cinema & outdoor ads. Though Nextel brand has been kept out of the campaign, it has been included in spots where its push-to-talk walkie-talkie style feature is being promoted. In earlier campaigns, when both Sprint & Nextel were included, it had sent out a confusing message. Reason being, that while Nextel is mainly targeted at business clients, Sprint is more focused on end consumers. This time, though, there will be no such brand confusion hurting the future.

Hony. Dean of Centre for Economic Research and Advance Studies, IIPM, Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri is per

Hony. Dean of Centre for Economic Research and Advance Studies, IIPM, Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri is perhaps the man IIPM is associated most with. Management Guru, Best Selling Author, Business Magazine Editor, Film Maker… he dons many hats. However, it is taking of workshops on management and the Indian economy that he is most passionate about. Apart from writing on socially important issues, keeping gatherings of thousands enthralled for hours through his passionate speeches is his forte. Here he writes on why he thinks that there is an MBA Mafia in India.

Management education as a term has been defined, redefined and today it is being ill-defined. It’s common knowledge that management education can be imparted after doing graduation in any stream, be it history, geography, economics, biology, engineering etc. The most important aspect of the above fact is that management is not that well developed stream for which one has to spend years of education (5 years or more). What I mean is if one wants to do Masters in Geography, he necessary has to have a bachelors Degree in Geography and the same is with physics, economics, and all other streams of higher education. This is so as all these streams are very well developed and therefore to understand a Masters level theory for micro biology for example requires a perfect understanding of all the graduation level theories of the same subject. All the other fields of post graduate studies are post graduate in nature because of the higher level of technicalities and theories in them.

What I am trying to drive towards is the non challengeable fact that management as a stream of studies is more hype than content. Infact, after a certain point its actually not possible to develop it any further. That is why today, famous management experts, international management gurus as well as the top management consulting firms in a last ditch effort are trying to come out with newer models which at best borders between being silly and at worst being ridiculous. The same theories are today being reformulated with different and more complicated jargons and new circles, triangles, and rectangles added in the same model. English is a beautiful language. From Hallmark to Archies, they all make millions out of this language by putting the same words like “I love you” in millions of different ways in their cards in an effort to produce emotions in their printing factories. Today’s management consulting firms and experts are trying to use the same to keep their profession alive.

Anyway coming back to where we were, the fact is management is no nuclear physics for which a very high IQ is required nor is it so technical that only IIT and other top engineering graduates can only understand it. This time I am trying to drive towards the fact that the enormously tough entrance tests for MBA education is absolutely unwarranted and unnecessary. Neither has the level of input imparted got anything to do with it (my point about history to engineering students being offered MBA) nor has the nature of application of the subject. In fact the realization today is that people with more EQ (Emotional Quotient) are definitely better material for a successful manager than those with higher IQ who could definitely do the country some good working in the R&D labs for which the government invests so much on them rather than nurturing ambitions of becoming MBAs and then eventually leaving the country as well. These people (from IIT and likes) should either pay up for the investment the government makes on them as well as the opportunity cost or perhaps barred from changing streams or be asked to serve the public sector/defense sector/government initiatives for at least seven to ten years before they are allowed to venture into other areas.

I remember, one of the ex deans of FMS, Delhi in a frantic bid to justify the tough entrance tests once said in an interview with CSR that so many questions in so little time basically was a test of the individuals ability to make quick decisions which is the most important aspect of management.

The reality however is that, if you take decisions too quickly you would turn out to be more of a damager than a manager. For a small change in a product such a lot of time consuming systematic research is required. Even before the research is undertaken a whole lot of time is spent on deciding who should be given the contract. All this because such a lot of money is at stake.

Looking at things around I am forced to feel that this country today has a mafia operating in the field of MBA education. A group of people with vested interests who want to keep this simple common sense education limited only to a few so that their starting salaries can be artificially jacked up to anything between Rs. 5 lakhs and 8 lakhs per annum. If they are so good then why don’t our public sector companies too employ them and revive instead of going on sale. Why don’t we produce 2000 MBAs in each of the IIMs with such phenomenal facilities, acres of land and huge buildings? It is not done so that companies get intimidated by the huge infrastructure, in which just about 150 to 200 students are made to feel in the ninth clouds, and get compelled to pay astronomical sums of money. These schools therefore create an artificial scarcity and capitalise on it. If the number of students are not artificially and unnecessary limited the salaries perhaps would come down to Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 lakhs per annum at the maximum which is their actual worth and with more better quality MBAs the growth rate of our country might break the 2% to 3% barrier which the current number of highly educated MBAs have been able to give the country.

In a land where the greatness of a teacher is reflected by the amount of education he has spread, here in this field of management we have teachers who want to limit the spread of education for their own respect in society as well as for the profits and superficial glamour of the MBA graduates. They are comparable to our corrupt and illiterate politicians who don’t want to educate the public because of the fear that the first thing educated public would do is to reject them. Infact, keeping in mind the level of education of our management educators they are a worse lot, for it is worse to be educated and yet wanting education to be limited so that you can milk it than to be uneducated and wanting the masses to remain so.

Being from the management field myself one might wonder what makes me write all this. The truth is inspite of all the hype I do believe that MBA is one field of education which shapes up personalities, so I love this field and I wish that thousands more could benefit out of it and in turn help the country develop faster. In our institute, IIPM at least, this is what we strive for.

“Saving is a very simple rule, which I started following when I was only 17 years old. To me, saving instills a sense of freedom, whether you intend to save the money for a rainy day or use it for your marriage, higher education, for purchasing a property, for providing for your ageing parents or for buying something fantastic for yourself like a car or maybe travel to places like Greece or go diving some place exquisite… I was willing to put 10% of my earnings thereon to charity, but the rest I invested in government bonds or in small pieces of jewellery. But the underlying thought behind those moves was that bits of money that didn’t seem worth much initially become much more substantial when it all comes together; whether you start with Rs 500, Rs 5000 or Rs 5 lakhs. Like one time, I invested in a small share portfolio where I gave a pal small amounts of money, whatever I could afford at that time, for 10 years. On my 30th birthday, he gifted me the returns on my investment, which was 20 times the initial sum! It was with that money I bought my first property.

It’s very important to start saving from a young age. In India, one of the first lessons a girl is taught is the art of compromising. To me that lesson has no value unless you fend for yourself in a time of crisis and manage financially without anyone’s help. That responsibility can only be imbibed when women stop depending on men for security. Investing and saving is not all that complex, one could start at grass root basics and then happily sit back and watch your greens grow!”
