The most common phenomenon in today’s world is the computer and people having to sit for long

The most common phenomenon in today’s world is the computer and people having to sit for long hours in front it and working without a break. Keeping this in mind, one of the essentials of an office or a home based business is a high quality and comfortable office furniture computer chair.

People frequently make the mistake of choosing the computer chair on the basis of its looks and price. However, this is the wrong criteria for buying a computer chair and it will invariably lead you astray. Since you will be spending a major portion of the day sitting in your computer chair, you need to make sure that it provides the comfort that you are looking for. If you buy a low priced office computer chair, you are bound to be disappointed. Even if such a chair looks durable and strong, the chances are that it won?t be able to support your body for more than a couple of hours so you need to beware of such chairs. In other words, it is extremely important that you buy a chair that meets all your needs even if it is a bit expensive.

Thus, it becomes necessary to gauge your needs before finalizing on your choice of a computer chair. You also have to exercise some degree of foresight and consider the possibility of future back and neck problems that can easily arise out of a sedentary job. Usually, incorrect sitting postures lead to these problems and this is where a good computer chair will help you.

When buying a computer chair, try and get one that can be adjusted freely to different positions as it will ensure maximum comfort when being seated for long hours. A great quality chair will definitely fulfil this demand, so spend as much money as you can on purchasing your computer chair. If you happen to be an employee of a company that provides sub-standard computer chairs, make it a point to draw the attention of the authorities to the problems that may arise because of uncomfortable seating. If the authorities are convinced that you have a valid point in your argument, they might get good quality office chairs for all the employees.

Generally, there is a good way of obtaining the right chair when you are engaged in the process of buying one and that is to personally sit on the chair in the store and check for yourself whether it feels good. If you are looking for a cheaper option, you can always look up the availability of the same model on various online stores. If you take these precautions, you will surely get an computer office chair that will relax and soothe you and help you to be extremely productive at work.

I rushed home with my brand new computer chair

I pushed the box into my civic avoiding the odd looks and a funny stare

A bargain a bargain $49.95 for a faux leather chair -extraordinaire!

I unpacked, it was all in pieces! but on hand I had a bag of peanut reese’s,

I toiled, I sweat, I snapped the parts into place and cajoled the rest,

then..

there it was shining in the glow of my supersaver 25 watt bulb.

My spa in a chair, my place to stare, my faux leather chair -extraordinaire!

I kerplunked down, a twinge went up my back…

Something’s wrong, something’s amiss!

before I knew it I had plopped on the floor with a hiss,

I tried to seat myself again,

it was not too long after I picked myself off the floor,

that’s when I knew what I was headed for,

endless days of fighting with a chair,

I push back, it pushes forward, I push back, it pushes forward …oh my faux leather chair -extraordinaire.

Have you ever seen my desk chair at home? Better yet, ever tried sitting in it? It had definitely

Have you ever seen my desk chair at home? Better yet, ever tried sitting in it? It had definitely seen better days. It was one of those simpler computer chairs that had wheels, could spin, and had no armrests. Not an uncomfortable chair be default, but just simple, and decent quality. However, mine was falling apart… literally. The back was bent back so badly you really couldn’t lean back any more. Because of this, it became more of a stool to sit on. Lisa and I had discussed getting a new chair, but that was before we were planning our wedding, and we have had more important things to discuss.

On the other side of the world, or rather, down the hall, my mother has a very nice, “newish”, comfortable office/desk chair. Well, almost right after she got it (as a gift actually), one of the 5 wheels broke off. It wasn’t just the weel, though… the entire end of the “leg” of the chair broke off. Yeah, I dunno. Anyway, it was still… “sittable”… and they’ve been using it like that for a very long time. Once in a while I’d need to use my mom’s computer for something and sitting in that chair is very annoying… if you lean the wrong way the chair just starts to fall. I don’t know how they put up with it.

Well, apparently another one of the wheels broke off yesterday, rending the chair pretty much garbage. My sister was the one who broke it… so my sister promised to buy her a new one this week, and when I got up this morning I noticed the chair with the broken feet over by the front door, ready to be taken to the trash.

Now that I’ve been so long winded about a stupid chair, let me get to the point. I put 2 and to together and had an idea. Wasn’t sure if it would work, but I tried anyway. I came into my room and popped the entire bottom of the chair off (the part with that center “pole” piece and all the legs and wheels attached to it). See, the top of my chair was destroyed, but there was nothing wrong with the bottom. It’s the other way around for my mom’s chair. So I took the bottom of my chair and went over to my mom’s chair and popped the broken bottom off of that one, and put mine in its place. Voila! It was a perfect fit and now I have one complete, unbroken chair! I’m so pleased.

Ok, that’s all.

When I was about 3 years old my neighbors died. Don and Mimi Lee were my elderly neighbors as a tod

When I was about 3 years old my neighbors died. Don and Mimi Lee were my elderly neighbors as a toddler. I remember them fondly as I do most “well aged” people in my life. In their house there was always Brachs candy in a big tub under the kitchen sink, why the kitchen sink, I don’t know; a bear rug in the den and something with horns on the wall. The living room was always sunny and bright, I don’t remember the furniture in the living room, just the brightness. They had a playroom for their grandchildren, this is where I played a lot, keeping their toys warm until their next visit.

Mimi Lee was a sweet woman, always welcoming, my mom and Auntie Maggie would clean her house for her sometimes, every now and then the yard also. Don was retired and loving it, being bounced up and down on his knee looking at the thing with horns on the wall was a favorite pass-time. Mimi died first, this broke Don’s heart and he was never the same, he died a year later. When Don and Mimi passed their children came and cleaned the house out, dividing items amongst them and giving some things to our family. I remember them letting me pick something out from the playroom. There was so much to choose from, their grandkids were very loved; I’m not sure what toy I picked out, but I do remember them bringing over the little red chair for me to have.

My little red chair is older than I am, possibly made in the sixties or seventies. The frame is metal, the seat is red vinyl with nail head trim. This chair has been with me all my life, first as a seat in favorite neighbors house, then as my favorite seat in my house. It’s been with me in every home I’ve ever lived in and even survived a break in, where burglars stole everything in my home, including photo albums, personal items and everything in the kitchen fridge and cabinets when I was about 9 or 10 years old. It came with me when I was married, Jimmy had his sling chair from college and I had my little red chair. It’s served as a shelf, footstool, table, kitty chair, doll chair and of course my chair.

We just got through moving into a new place with two bedrooms, so Chloe could have her own room, so far she likes it a lot. During the move we decided to get rid of our computer chair as it was pretty much dead and we planned on buying a new one for our new place. It’s been two weeks in our new place and we still haven’t purchased a new computer chair, so guess what’s serving as a computer chair? My little red chair. I’m sure Chloe will eventually take my chair over, however, she must understand as long as mommy is alive it will be my little red chair. Should Chloe bless us with grandchildren it will be in their playroom at our house and when I go home to heaven Chloe can claim it.

Closing my eyes, a toy with a pull string and a teddy bear, leaving the good toys for the grandkids. Mommy said be humble.

This is what happens when a 26 year old woman decides to act like a 10 year old and run like mad down a scrabbly, broken and disused road of a hill, because she’s running a bit behind for the train.

She falls. And spends the next two days trying to come up with really good excuses. “I’m Angelina Jolie’s stunt double- didn’t I tell you?” “It’s the latest thing in skin exfoliation- works a treat!”

One severly scraped and swollen left arm.

Two badly scraped and bruised knees.

One slightly scraped right arm.

Two slightly scraped palms.

One entire body full of aches and pains at every movement.

One scratched up brand new cell phone.

And a badly damaged ego.

I have decided to walk, slowly, everywhere I go from now on. Oh, and leave a few minutes earlier for that train…

I’m not the only one beating myself up this week. Rafe fell on a walk to the park last Saturday and had a big scrape on his elbow, now a big scab. Running to the open front door on Wednesday, he tripped over his own feet and smacked his head against the door- bringing up a huge bump that three days later, is still a very nasty yellow/green color, and finally-stood up backwards on the computer chair and started cheering and bouncing his belly off the back of the chair. It toppled backwards and he very very barely missed giving himself another nasty bash to the head on the computer desk, but the floor was not entirely forgiving, either.

Humans were never meant to sit all day. Sitting puts a lot of pressure onto the bones at the base of

Humans were never meant to sit all day. Sitting puts a lot of pressure onto the bones at the base of your hips and this results in stress on your spine. The wrong chair can both cause and exacerbate pain in a surprising number of places. Areas where the wrong chair can make you miserable include your bottom, hips, back, legs, thoracic (upper back), shoulders, necks and arms.

What surprised me is how huge a difference the right chair can make. I have no idea what statistics are, but I’m guessing most people sit in the wrong chair. There’s a lot of cheap junk out there. My old office chair at home was a real piece of junk. I thought I’d bought a nice chair because it was leather, but within months the locknut that hold the back in place stripped out so now the back wiggles. It’s also too big for me. Here’s the BodyBilt J757 I sit in at home now – Lori’s chair.

Here’s a few tips on how to tell if your chair fits you.

Seat height - your feet should rest flat on the floor. Note this isn’t necessarily true if you’re at a higher workstation, in which case you need something to rest your feet on that accomplishes the same purpose. Use of a footstool, footrest, foot ring or a NextStep can all make a tall chair fit any person. If your bottom goes numb during the day, odds are your seat is too high. Either lower your seat or add a footrest.

Seat depth – your seat should be deep enough to fully support your thighs but should not touch the back of your knee. There should be a space of between 2-4 fingers width between the back of your leg and the front of your seat.

Seat back height – What matters here is whether or not the lumbar support is in the right place. Different people like different levels of support in the lumbar region, so ideally your chair has an adjustable lumbar support. Adjustable could mean height of the support, or actual depth of the support. Personally, I like chairs with an air lumbar as you can adjust those to fit your preferences.

Headrests – If your chair has one, it should hit you in a comfortable spot. Many chairs offer a height adjustment for the headrest but better chairs often add depth and sometimes even angle adjustments. The Foreaft headrest offered by BodyBilt is my favorite.

Seat Width – Your seat should be wide enough to fit your body, but not so wide your arms are too far from your body to be used comfortably. One way for a smaller body to cope with a wider seat is with arms that pivot inward like the Humanscale Freedom Chair or the Ergohuman chair. Pivoting are double pivot arms are also a great solution for those with wider hips and a narrower upper body.

Chair Arms – Ergonomists recommend against using any arms if your chair is being used for computer work. Your chair arms are meant to be used to rest between typing. The exception to this would be people who have shoulder or elbow issues who may need the added support. However Jon has said that if you’re pinky finger is getting numb, you’re putting too much pressure on the Ulner nerve and you need to stop leaning on your arms or seek out a softer, more padded chair arm.

This means that for most people, your arms should be adjustable and ideally can be moved out of the way, or easily removed. Humanscale’s chairs do this nicely as their arms can be adjusted very low which puts them out of the way. Other chairs offer swing back arms that flip out of the way such as the Via Voss Mesh Back chair, or arms that pivot outward as well as inward such as on the Ergohuman chair.

The one thing that is certain is that a fixed arm is not the best choice for most people.

Upholstery and cushions -Ergonomists and designers use software to measure how well a seat distributes body weight. The more evenly the weight is distributed, the fewer pressure points and the less likely a seat is going to cause pain or numbness. There are a number of different ways a designer can design a seat to better distribute body weight. The type of cushioning used, the shape of the seat pan, and even the fabric can all change the way a seat handles your body.

One popular solution is used on the Humanscale chairs. Humanscale offers the option of a gel seat on both their Freedom chair and Liberty chair. The science behind a gel seat is that it warms to your body and the custom contour created, more evenly balances your weight distribution. The gel seat is a great option if you sit for hours at a time, but will feel too hard if you’re up and down all day because it needs about 15 minutes to warm up and conform to your body.

Another popular way to improve a seat is to add contouring. Both BodyBilt chairs and Neutral Posture chairs offer seats with varying contours. Both companies also use multiple types of foam to provide both superior support and comfort, as well as optional memory foam top layers for softness. An extremely contoured seat does a wonderful job of eliminating pressure points and causes you to sit firmly back in your chair, preventing slouching but don’t allow you to vary your position.

Mesh chairs, like the Ergohuman chair, are extremely popular but how supportive is a mesh seat? Mesh seats can be very comfortable but don’t distribute body weight as well as many upholstered seats so most of the better chair manufacturers won’t build chairs that have mesh seats. A good compromise for the person who loves the air flow of mesh is a mesh back with an upholstered seat. Also some companies offer fabrics that provide airflow.

The fabric you choose can make a surprising difference and we’ve "sit tested" in our offices to prove it. A fabric that stretches 3 ways, like a sweater does, lets you feel the full "cush" of your seat cushions, making for a softer feel and allowing the seat cushioning to better absorb your body weight.

3 fabrics that do this well:

Humanscale’s
Wave

BodyBilt’s
Comfortek

Neutral Posture’s
Cloud 9

Price is not the best way to judge a chair though there are often advantages and good reasons to spend more on a good chair. I’ll cover those reasons in another post, however there are decent chair choices even in lower price ranges such as the Eurotech Apollo MT9400 which is under $250.

I have announcement to make, people…

My workspace no longer consists of a worn in couch (as my chair) and an old, T.V. tray table (as my desk),… I officially have de-ghetto-ized my work space (a bit).

It now consists of our ikea shelf (that used to be the home of many framed pictures) and a tall bar stool chair (which is slowly getting more unstable since the screws holding it together are stripped). UPGRADE, I tell you!!

Yes,… I have exchanged sitting, “indian-style” for sitting, jammed in between, “tons of entertainment devices and cords”.

But let me tell you, my friends,…. it sure beats sitting on a couch and using a T.V. tray. Yes sirrrreeee,… it does. And do you see what my sweet hubby set up for me?!?! A second monitor!! I never, in my entire life, would have thought I would know that you could even set up multiple monitors!!

I love my husband.

Just think. If this delights me so greatly now,….think about when I, someday, have enough space to house an actual, real desk!!

Think about that!

If you really think about it, your office environment is a big influence on how you work. I have not

If you really think about it, your office environment is a big influence on how you work. I have noticed with myself for an example that i like a good clean working space, in a larger than normal room. I also prefer it to be silent with very little distraction when in-fact i am working. I differ in that opinion when i am just using the computer for entertainment.

Right now my arrangement of my office as you can see at http://live.bradwelltv.com, is with a desk on one side of the room with a whole load of junk on the floor. I have the Webcam on the other side of the room, and a filing cabinet to my very far right. This room that i am working in right now is probably only 2.5 metres all around. I have very few objects that i keep 24/7 on my desk which includes a land-line phone, and a stapler. What i think makes my office unique is that there is very few objects in it which keeps it feeling light and clean.

So really the only thing that you can do with the arrangement of your home office is first have a comfortable chair. Second make sure your workspace is “workable” if you know what i mean. If you come into the office and want to leave, it is obviously not the right set up, or the right office for you. I also recommend that you keep it cleaned and organized, and try to reduce as much access clutter as your possibly can. This is big…. It keeps distractions at a minimum, and essentially forces you to work.

Make sure also that you have all the supplies you think you would need in the office, “In The Office”. Going some other place to find some supplies can easily cause you to become offtrack, and disrupt your work habits. I also recomend having a telephone/cellphone nearby just in-case you have to make any sort of business calls.

In the end my number one recommendation is to have fun with it. Enjoy your workspace, and make sure it not only does the job. Make sure that it exceeds your expectations with the job, and does everything you need to do with it with profession. I know i definitely have fun with my office, and love coming into it every single day.

Thanks

Okay I have a problem! I am admitting it. I sometimes laugh when people fall. No matter how bad I try not to laugh I just loose it. Not when they are in real pain but you know tripping or just not paying attention and stumble. I won’t get into to what I think happens to my self when I see a person fall. I just can help it. Maybe it’s nerves that make me giggle, I don’t know. I have shame but I don’t think there is much I can do.

So anyway on with why I am confessing this sad problem I have.

I have a computer chair that was on it’s last leg and for the life of me I could not fix it. In fact it was down right dangerous, I have a bruised hip and elbow to prove it! So I put it out for trash pick up or if anyone was so inclined to fix the wretched contraption- it was all theirs. So out it went cause I was not taking any more chances. So today Out side my door, I heard a truck pull up I looked out the window, oh yes just as I figured, someone was more than happy to take the beast of a chair off my hands but not before doing a test sit. I thought NOOOOOOO don’t sit in that thing it has it’s own ejection button. And then it happened no kidding I would pay to see this circus act again over and over. No kidding I am laughing now so hard I almost can’t write this. The guy pulls up looks at the chair like he is shopping at Macy’s department store. Turns it, rolls it, then plopped into it like they were friends, only to be totally rejected by this god awful seat! I thought I would pee my pants. It tilted and bucked like a rodeo bull and out he went on to my lawn. He popped up very quick(Get Smart like) looked around to see if anyone saw the interaction between he and the chair. I will never forget the look on his face, the horror, no pain that I could tell just pure embarrassment and offense that anyone would put that chair out there for him to sit on-Like I offered him a trick chair.

So did he take the chair? Hell yes he took it, I have no idea why, after it offended him so. Just goes to show doesn’t matter- Ones mans trash is another mans rodeo bull chair treasure LOL
