When was the last time you were able to sit and enjoy a good old fashioned game of scrolling Super Mario or Dig Dug? Probably not for years unless you have been able to keep your old game system and cartridges in good working condition. For everyone else there is a little known gem called emulation.

Emulation refers to the ability of a program or device to imitate another program or device, thus tricking the software into believing the correct device has been found. It sounds strange but it will enable you to play some of your favorite games that were originally made for systems such as Commodore, Atari, and Nintendo. It is also possible for one computer, such as an Apple Macintosh, to emulate another computer, such as a PC.

None of that means much, however, until you discover the right emulator for playing all those old favorites on your new computer. The good news is that you can download these emulators directly off the internet for free! Some of the downloads available are for Amiga, Commodore, Gameboy, Playstation 1, and Nintendo along with all the games (ROMS) these machines play.

One of the most popular emulators recreates the old Super Nintendo console and is called the ZSNES Emulator found at www.zsnes.com. The ZSNES program has an extensive help file that walks you through the set up process of saving a copy to your Personal Computer. As a consumer I love my iPhone. It’s elegant. It’s sleek. It makes funny clicking noises and is shiny. As a developer I fucking hate my iPhone. Apple doesn’t allow me to code on anything but a Mac (and gets all pissy when I hack my computer to run OSX so that I can get around this stupid restriction), requires me to certify my software through the Apple Store, and in general makes life a living hell for me if I want to do any sort of mobile development for the iPhone.

Not being able to develop easily on your platform is a bad thing, Apple. You saw this when Adobe left you out in the cold but let all of the other kids (Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, the ugly OS/2 Warp esque but mad functional Blackberry OS) come in and play with flash. You’re seeing this now even outside the mobile market; the explosion of support for .NET is no doubt the result of Micrsoft supporting young developers through initiatives like MSDNAA whereas your “developer program” to push Objective-C requires that you first buy a macbook.

Score. Because that’s what I want to do as a college student: drop a grand on a laptop to fund a hobby rather than spend it on less important things like tuition or books. I mean really, who pays for college? That’s so 1990.

Apple’s top-down, vertically-integrated, Sauron-in-his-tower, join us or die approach to development was obviously a mistake. Google’s decision to release the Google Phone gives Android the excellent design it needed to play ball against the iPhone, and Microsoft’s extensive support for .NET and new amorous relationship with industrial design  (the Zune HD is downright beautiful) similarly poses a potentially superior value proposition to both developers and consumers of its mobile products.

It’s easier to develop apps in a variety of different languages for both Android and Windows Mobile. With this ease comes more available apps, which gives utility to the consumer. With this utility in software, and Google and Micrsooft’s OS now being clad in significantly flashier digs, the iPhone has some serious threats on its radar.

And the threats just got more intense. Nokia has been quietly biding their time in the shadows throughout most of this stage of the mobile OS market. With almost seventy to eighty percent market share in aggregate mobile operating systems in the world, Nokia’s lack of response to the iPhone 3G (read: a potential backhanded slap and a cry of “bitch please” given their market power) was unsettling to the say the least.

Fortunately for Nokia, their silence wasn’t the result of totally missing the ball or even market power hubris. Nokia was preparing to go to war with their own new operating system and phone. And this one’s a doozy. Nokia’s new n900 isn’t a smart phone. It’s a palm-sized mobile computer that’s so well designed and expertly crafted that minutes after you buy it there’s a high probability that you might begin to worry that it’s having an affair with your significant other.

I’ve been settling on software a lot, let’s talk about hardware. Nokia is very good at designing hardware. A textbook case of how market power can sometimes yield you a superior product due to economies of scale (take a look at Barney and the other Harvard School of Economics’ strategic management literature), Nokia’s long amount of time in the game and experience in making phones has afforded them an excellent sense of industrial design. In terms of hardware features: if a droid “does” the n900 “does it better.” The n900 also has a 5MP camera (hopefully without the weird software bug that crippled early Droids’ ability to focus properly) and a touchpad/physical keyboard combo and large LED screen. The wealth of experience Nokia has in the global marketplace has also afforded the n900 support for an absurd amount of communication bands. This means that, if your cell service will allow you to, you can pretty much go anywhere in the world and get both voice and 3G with your phone if it’s available in the area.  This is an attractive feature for service providers; everyone from AT&T to T-Mobile (with their absurdly weird GSM range) is in the love with the n900.

The N900’s design is just brilliant in software. Android’s decision to run on Linux was a very smart one. Tapping into a base of strong kernel developers who’re ready and willing to contribute with optimized apps was right on the money, and you can be sure that Google’s OS will find a lot of love in the developer community. But the N900 makes Android and Windows Mobile look like the iPhone when it comes to developer support. The n900 rocks Maemo 5: a Debian-based OS that supports desktop applications on the phone.

That’s right, desktop applications. Maemo 5 premiers with Firefox, but with Debian’s Aptitude package manager you could pretty much shrug and just as quickly install Chrome or Opera. Apple allows you to open .doc files on your phone? I can install OpenOffice and actually edit .doc and .xls files. Everyone has exchange support? I can install Evolution and it’s like I’m sitting at my computer. And with dpkg a fundamental part of Debian, writing an app store and package manager for Maemo is trivial. You just build another repository for mobile apps and write a front-end on top of Synaptic (apt’s graphical front end) to display neatly on the phone. Done deal. And talk about the available apps – there’s hundreds and thousands of applications available now thanks to Debian and Ubuntu. These are all now available for your phone from day one.

All of these features, coupled with what one imagines is going to be a great price point thanks again to Nokia’s economies of scale and the increasing number of firms entering the market, mean that Nokia has really brought a gun to a knife fight.  Having the functionality of a laptop computer on your mobile phone with all of the hot hardware of some of the best smartphones out there means that Nokia has really stepped up the game on its competition.

The question remains though: will Nokia be able to steal market share in the US from the iPhone when it hits our shores soon? Or the N900 simply take out one of the iPhone’s competitors and do little to whittle at Apple’s die-hard user base? The N900’s capabilities make it a smartphone ideally tailored towards businesses. It seems probable that if anyone was to get slammed by the N900 that it’d be RIM’s Blackberry. Open source developers, for whom Google should consider a resource market when it comes to Android development, also might move to the N900 for its superior feature set. If that’s the case, the N900 may have a greater detrimental effect on Google than on Apple. If RIM or Google feel better threatened by the n900 than they do by the iPhone, Nokia may be caught in fighting too hard against both of these companies to really direct their marketing and engineering efforts towards specifically killing the iPhone.

Either way the consumer wins. Assuming that the n900 becomes an attractive alternative for American consumers, its competitors will need to step up their game to compete and provide a superior value proposition. Things are going to get very interesting in mobile in the next few years.
