MySpace, rumored to be on the verge of purchasing the free music streaming site imeem, is struggling to keep up with its own payments to music copyright holders, according to a top News Corp executive — a problem that has plagued every other licensed free music service.

The digital music doubters could be right with the contention that advertising revenue can’t cover the costs of licensing music. Meanwhile, illegitimate free music sources continue to proliferate, rendering paid music subscriptions irrelevant for most music fans.

Advertising was supposed to be music’s magic bullet, enabling fans to get the free music they’re going to find anyway while contributing at least something to copyright holder coffers. Facebook was the dominate force once again, as the time spent viewing video on social networking sites increased 98% over the last year from 503.8M minutes to 999.4M minutes. According to Nielsen, the number of online video streams viewed on social networks and blogs jumped 45% during the same period.

During the last year, Facebook’s online video audience has experienced tremendous growth with total time spent viewing videos increasing 1,840% from 34.9M minutes in October ‘08 to 677M in October ‘09. The number of unique viewers increased 548% and total streams grew 987% during the year. [read]

A motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in many modern computers and holds many of the crucial components of the system, while providing connectors for other peripherals. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the main board, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board. It is also sometimes casually shortened to mobo.

Prior to the advent of the microprocessor, a computer was usually built in a card-cage case or mainframe with components connected by a backplane consisting of a set of slots themselves connected with wires; in very old designs the wires were discrete connections between card connector pins, but printed circuit boards soon became the standard practice. The Central Processing Unit, memory and peripherals were housed on individual printed circuit boards which plugged into the backplane.

During the late 1980s and 1990s, it became economical to move an increasing number of peripheral functions onto the motherboard (see below). In the late 1980s, motherboards began to include single ICs (called Super I/O chips) capable of supporting a set of low-speed peripherals: keyboard, mouse, floppy disk drive, serial ports, and parallel ports. As of the late 1990s, many personal computer motherboards supported a full range of audio, video, storage, and networking functions without the need for any expansion cards at all; higher-end systems for 3D gaming and computer graphics typically retained only the graphics card as a separate component.

The early pioneers of motherboard manufacturing were Micronics, Mylex, AMI, DTK, Hauppauge, Orchid Technology, Elitegroup, DFI, and a number of Taiwan-based manufacturers.

Popular personal computers such as the Apple II and IBM PC had published schematic diagrams and other documentation which permitted rapid reverse-engineering and third-party replacement motherboards. Usually intended for building new computers compatible with the exemplars, many motherboards offered additional performance or other features and were used to upgrade the manufacturer’s original equipment.

The term mainboard is archaically applied to devices with a single board and no additional expansions or capability. In modern terms this would include embedded systems and controlling boards in televisions, washing machines, etc. A motherboard specifically refers to a printed circuit with the capability to add/extend its performance and capabilities with the addition of “daughterboards.”

Das Internet sollte in der Politik eine stärkere Rolle spielen. Diese Ansicht vertreten knapp zwei Drittel der insgesamt 1003 Bundesbürger, die vom Marktforschungsinstitut ARIS im Auftrag des Branchenverbands Bitkom befragt wurden. Gleichzeitig trauen die Befragten den deutschen Politikern in Sachen Internet nicht viel zu, wie der Verband am heutigen Montag mitteilte.

Nur 44 Prozent der Befragten waren der Ansicht, dass die Politik genügend Sachkenntnis über die technischen und wirtschaftlichen Hintergründe des Internets habe; 40 Prozent hielten die vorhandenen Kenntnisse für nicht ausreichend. 62 Prozent der Befragten halten einem “Internet-Führerschein” für Politiker für eine gute Idee. Unter den 14- bis 29-Jährigen befürworten das 72 Prozent.

Unter “Internetpolitik” versteht der Bitkom verschiedene Politikfelder wie der Datenschutz, der “Schutz des geistigen Eigentums in der digitalen Welt” oder die Bekämpfung der Online-Kriminalität. Der Verband begrüßte, dass die neue Regierung in ihrer Koalitionsvereinbarung “erstmals einen Schwerpunkt in der Internetpolitik gesetzt” habe. “Nun muss die Politik inhaltlich nachlegen”, forderte Bitkom-Präsident August-Wilhelm Scheer. Das sei auch eine vertrauensbildende Maßnahme.

Die letzten Initiativen der Bundesregierung – Online-Durchsuchung, Vorratsdatenspeicherung, Inernetsperren seien sehr umstritten gewesen. “Das rechte Maß zwischen Freiheitsrechten und öffentlicher Sicherheit muss in der digitalen Welt noch gefunden werden”, meint Scheer. “Geht die Politik nicht mit Augenmaß vor, verliert sie den Rückhalt in der Bevölkerung.“ In dem anfänglichen Erfolg der Piratenpartei, die bei der Bundestagswahl 2 Prozent der Stimmen erreichte, sieht der Bitkom eine Folge dieser Politik. Immerhin 70 Prozent der vom Verband Befragten kannten die Piratenpartei. (vbr/c’t)

In my 30+ years in the systems industry, I have seen a lot of computer printers; everything from high speed line printers that print 132 characters per line to the early laser printers and plotters, to today’s consumer dot-matrix printers. I even have some of the original print wheels from the first high speed printer for the UNIVAC I. They’re over 50 years old and I’m sure they’re worth something, but I digress.

What bugs me though are today’s consumer printers which can be unusually inexpensive, so much so, the ink cartridges for them are almost as expensive as the whole printer, which turns the printers into disposable commodities. It’s no small wonder that our garbage dumps are filling up with printers as people change printers more frequently than years ago. This implies the real money is not in the printers themselves, but in the ink cartridges which bears a hefty price tag for replacements, be it new or recycled, which, to me, seems odd as ink should be relatively cheap. Then again, I suspect the manufacturers of such products probably have a better grasp of marketing than I do. As a consumer though, I object to paying $25 – $35 for a lousy little black ink cartridge which lasts no more than a month, and much more for color.

I generally don’t have much of a problem installing printers, then again, I have a bit more experience than most people. To the novice consumer though, installing a printer can be a very traumatic experience, primarily because the software is designed by programmer geeks who haven’t got a clue what “user friendly” means. Some of the common mistakes I’ve seen include:

• Installing a cartridge without first removing the tiny plastic strip under it.
• Trying to insert the cartridge backwards or upside-down.
• Inserting the black cartridge into the color cartridge position, and vice versa.
• Plugging the printer cables into the wrong sockets.
• For Wi-Fi printers, trying to get them to communicate with your network. Better yet, if something crashes, reestablishing the connection can be a painful experience, even for me.
• My personal favorite though is fighting with the printer to get the cartridges to reveal themselves in order to change them. You know, watching the cartridges as they zip from side-to-side in the printer thereby keeping them out of the person’s reach, kind of like a game of Tag.

Then there are the printers that talk to you, such as “Printing started” and “Printing complete.” Then it begins to get insolent with you when something goes awry, “Please fill paper in the auto sheet feeder” or “Your ink is low, time to replace the cartridge.” These statements are all based on small sound bites that are assembled and broadcast as required. Interestingly, one of my computers suffered a crash which distorted the sequence of the sound bites. Now I get things like, “Problem started” and “Please fill your ink in the auto sheet feeder and replace the cartridge with paper.” Frankly, if I’m going to be insulted in this manner, they could at least do it with a sexy voice.

The geeks may think this is funny. The rest of us do not.

In einem Interview der Berliner tageszeitung taz verwies sie auf die heimliche Onlinedurchsuchung von Computern und die sechsmonatige anlasslose Vorratsdatenspeicherung aller Telekommunikationsverkehrsdaten. “Das Bundeskriminalamt hat präventive Befugnisse bei der Terrorabwehr erhalten. An all das haben wir in den 90-er Jahren noch nicht einmal gedacht.”

Die Politikerin war 1996 zurückgetreten, weil sie die Einführung des großen Lauschangriffs nicht mittragen wollte. Auf die Frage, ob sich ihre Maßstäbe mittlerweile verändert hätten, sagte die Liberale, die heutige Situation sei mit der damaligen nicht vergleichbar. “Die FDP hat in den letzten elf Jahren nicht regiert, aber 2009 konnte ich in den Koalitionsverhandlungen einen Kurswechsel in der Innen- und Rechtspolitik einleiten.”

Es ist gerade einmal knappe 12 Monate her, das ich mir einen Laptop mit dem undankbaren Betriebssystem Windows Vista gekauft habe. Ich hätte gerne XP gehabt, das war aber nicht im Angebot.
Seit ein paar Tagen muckte der Laptop rum und startete ohne Vorwanung einfach neu. Ich werde irgendwie das Gefühl nicht los, das es am Servicepack 2 liegt, denn seitdem das drauf ist, ist der Laptop nur noch “gaga”.
Inzwischen ist es aber egal, denn das Servicepack 2 ist nicht mehr drauf, was aber einen relativ einfachen Grund hat, nämlich jener, daß Windows Vista neu aufgespielt werden musste – herrlich, oder?
Das ist bereits das zweite mal in 12 Monaten, vielleicht sollte ich mir langsam Windows 7 anschaffen.
Nachdem ich mir dann die halbe Nacht um die Ohren geschlagen habe, war der Laptop auch wieder einsatzbereit und lediglich die Sims 3 inklusive dem Reiseabenteuer Add-On wurden installiert. Virtua Tennis 2009 werde ich heute auch noch drauf packen, aber ansonsten bleibt der Laptop erstmal “clean”. Mehr wie Spielen, Schreiben oder Musik hören und Filme gucken mache ich damit sowieso nicht.

Seit dem Sommer geistert Chrome OS durch die Schlagzeilen, jetzt hat Google eine erste Entwicklerversion als Chromium OS veröffentlicht. heise open hat sich das Google-Betriebssystem angesehen und kommt zu dem Schluss: Ein Windows-Killer ist es nicht – und will es auch gar nicht sein. Chrome OS, an dem auch Ubuntu-Entwickler mitarbeiten, zielt auf Web-Appliances, die immer online sind und im Wesentlichen für Internet-Aktivitäten genutzt werden. Das System spielt in einer ganz anderen Klasse als Windows und Mac OS X, aber ist auch kaum mit den etablierten Linux-Distributionen vergleichbar.

So verzichtet das Google-Betriebssystem komplett auf einen Desktop, die einzige Anwendung in Chrome OS ist der Google-Browser. An die Stelle lokal installierter Programme treten Web-Applikationen; in seiner Standard-Konfiguration ist es ohne Google-Account gar nicht benutzbar. Für den Einsatz auf Web-Appliances bietet es allerdings interessante Ansätze.

Priced at lesser than $100, and in fact less than $60 in most instances, it is fast catching the attention of many TV viewers, especially those who watch satellite TV for long hours. The lower pricing than PCTV cards is not the only reason for its popularity. Their wide selection of TV channels in the range of thousands makes it a powerful tool to use to watch satellite TV on PCs.

Artificially adjusted to look closer to the real temperatures!?!?!?!?!? I cannot vouch for the validity of this code, I will have to direct towards the Air Vent – but presumably it comes from the bundle dumped last Thursday.
