Over the last year and the last few months especially, I have noticed an increase in the following:
1. the number of “news” or other non-opinion websites allowing comments without much moderation or filter, with an unhealthy mix of fact and opinion causing an ever-increasing level of hostility in their comments.
2. the level of vitriol in comments on any given topic, even if the topic is not an opinion story, including insults not meant as jokes but as responses intended to shame or discourage positive discourse.

One possible explanation that occurred to me just recently is that Usenet was basically shut down/integrated into the Internet proper. In the old days, I abandoned Usenet after seeing the comments digress into this type of nonsense. I remember thinking to myself, “I am so glad this isn’t part of the Internet.” But now it is a part of the Internet, and it appears to be a growing problem. I don’t think people are understanding that moderation will lead to more insightful discussions, plus a stable long-term user base. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean that a private website can’t actively encourage positive discourse by removing insulting posts.

The online OS builder allows you to choose between 32 bit or 64 bit system based on SUSE, GNOME, KDE, Minimal X or text only Server. In the next menu you will be asked to choose all the software you prefer (7,876 different packages). Tonton Taufik, 35 tahun, eksportir mebel pemenang Primaniyarta 2007, punya data menakjubkan soal kekuatan Internet. Data ini sebenarnya mudah ditemukan jika seseorang menelusuri jejaring maya Internet. Tapi jika diungkapkan oleh seorang Tonton, efeknya jadi lain. Soalnya Tonton mengalami langsung kedahsyatan Internet mendongkrak bisnisnya.

Bayangkan, tahun 1999 lalu Tonton memulai bisnisnya dengan hanya bermodalkan seperangkat komputer. Jika ditotal investasi perangkat ini hanya sekitar Rp 5 jutaan. Saat itu dengan bermodal komputernya yang terhubung ke Internet Tonton memulai usahanya dengan menawarkan mebel dari pembuat mebel di Cirebon. Dari sektor bisnis, ada perbandingan lain yang juga mengagumkan. Berapa lama waktu diperlukan seorang Henry Ford (pengusaha mobil AS) untuk memperoleh US$ 1 miliar pertamanya? Jawabnya 25 tahun. Lalu berapa lama diperlukan Bill Gates (pembuat software Microsoft) untuk mencapai jumlah yang sama? Jawabnya 12 tahun. Lalu siapa pebisnis Internet yang bisa disandingkan dengan kedua tokoh besar bisnis tadi? Tonton memilih Jeff Bezos, pengusaha yang menjual buku melalui Internet dengan nama Amazon.com. Masalahnya, berapa lama Jeff Bezos memperoeh US$ 1 miliar pertamanya? “Ternyata cuma 3 tahun,” kata Tonton. Jadi, Internet memang dahsyat.

Nah, Tonton punya tips mendorong ekspor Indonesia dengan kekuatan Internet. Ia meramunya dari pengalamannya mengekspor mebel rotan melalui Internet. (1) Pemberantasan 3 buta yaitu buta bahasa asing (Inggris), buta komputer, dan buta Internet. (2) Kampanye Penggunaan Internet untuk berdagang. It is not always possible to find a wi-fi hotspot everytime you need but now it is possible to create you own portable hotspot on the go. This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we reviewed Joikuspot Light: an interesting software to create a wi-fi hotspot with your Nokia. The first thing you have to focus on your attention is your data plan on your mobile. In fact, if you have not a flat plan we really do not recommend to use Joikuspot because your mobile bill could be very expensive! For all the people with flat mobile plans we can affirm that Joikuspot Light is very easy to use and the connection are stable. In our tests we use a Nokia based on Symbian and we were able to surf the internet without any problem. I have now up and running a virtually 100% stable, bump-free experience with my new Snow Leopard hackintosh. Thanks to the methods outlined in the Lifehacker tutorial, I was able to get a machine together that has, as of yet, experienced virtually ZERO problems or instability. I’ve even left it running through the night and into the next day with no shutdowns and Time Machine backing up all the while, and yet there isn’t a single problem to speak of.
