Of course, I’m talking about the Usenet. Say what? A lot of you don’t know what the Usen

Of course, I’m talking about the Usenet.

Say what?

A lot of you don’t know what the Usenet is, and if you do, you probably don’t use it. It’s about as Prehistoric as anything on the Net can be. In the dinosaur age of Internet communications (back in 1979, long before you were born…) a couple of college students set up an communications network so that they and their geek homies could send notes back and forth without paper or a phone call. Before long, the connections spread between universities and the ease of communication gradually became apparent even to those outside the university campuses in the world of “regular people”.

But as web browsers became more sophisticated, and email and social networking like Tweety and Faceback became so popular, people tended to stop using this primitive form of networking — until recently. The thing about Usenet is that it’s a lot harder to supervise or control then any of the regular forms of networking on the web.

The Usenet originally gained popularity because it provided a really simple means for people who shared similar interests to form groups (called “newsgroups”) by which they could communicate with each other and share work files (like a textbook manuscript people were working on.) Groups can be formed focused on virtually any interest: there are groups for gardeners and carpenters, auto restoration and pets. If your major interest are Corvettes from the ’60s, there are newsgroups for that. If your interest is in dachshunds, there are groups for dachshund lovers to share their joys and woes, their pets’ medical problems and psychological ones as well. (Dachshunds really do have psychological issues, you know.)

Computers (called servers) provide a free service for all Usenet users of keeping each newsgroup’s list of communications (postings) available for as much as a year (at least, the best servers keep things around awhile.) That way, everyone who is “networked” with others sharing their same interest can send out answers to questions or other helpful information for their newsy buds to refer to when they need it. For example: if you have a PIXMA MP500 printer and you’ve lost a printer driver for an obsolete version of Windows you’re still running, go on the Usenet and look for a group focused on old printer drivers (don’t think I’m kidding! There are an incredible range of interests in the hundreds of thousands of newsgroup that exist.) A group like that will often have posted old drivers, user manuals, software tweaks, etc. that you could never find on the Web. These groups have an incredible variety of materials posted.

Be aware though that you can find the worst of the worst on the Usenet as well. There are groups framed around racist hatred, sexual fetishes, violent cult movies, political extremism and other weird interests. I have two comments about this: (1) most computer servers which “host” newsgroups delete most or all of the more objectionable newsgroups, and (2) the extremes that are available demonstrate the true freedom of this communication network. Freedom is the power or right to make your own decisions, even bad ones. If there aren’t at least some people making “bad” decisions, there isn’t real freedom. For Christians, they have Papa Adam and Momma Eve to thank for exercising their God-given freedom — by being really stupid. But if you can’t be stupid, it aren’t freedom.

And that freedom to relate to and network with others who share your interests is one of the most attractive aspects of the Usenet today. For example: I’m considering starting a newsgroup on what I call the “Mu-church”. It’s not a “church” — it’s a “not-church”, and is a spiritual perspective rather than an organization. And I sense that there are many others “out there” around the world who share similar spiritual concerns and desires as I do. The simplest and most inclusive (and most ungovernable) means of networking with those of similar interests is to set up a Usenet group. I don’t know yet what it would be called (the process of setting up a newsgroup includes refining its name) but I’d start off with something like “alt.church.mu-church”. Then when anyone did a search for “alternative” forms of “church”, they’d find it. And once formed, anything like books, articles, videos, http links, advice, discussions and arguments would remain for extended periods of time for new group members to find — all nicely stored for the group at someone else’s expense on someone else’s servers!

One of the best newsgroup servers is called Newsdemon (it’s a “demon” for gathering one of the largest collection of newsgroups of any Usenet server, and it holds your newsgroups posts — the conversations, shared materials, etc. — longer than almost any other, for over a year!) You can find it at http://www.newsdemon.com and its monthly fee isn’t much (less than ten bucks) for a dependable and fast service.

Usenet is increasing again in popularity, partly due to people feeling a sense of caution about persistent discussions at governmental levels of “controlling” the Web. Networking with others around the world on a common interest that might be personal, religious or otherwise “of interest” to outside control has led many to “disappear” into the virtual “underground” of the Usenet. And as far as I’m concerned, the best limit to personal freedom is not the government (or even the church or your employer!) The best limits to personal freedom is to experience the consequences of your own behavior. The Bible says it like this: “A wise person learns by listening to the advice of others; but even a fool learns his lesson when Life slaps him in the face!” Suffering the consequences of your choices and actions, even in terms of what you perpetuate in networking with others, is an inescapable reproof, and one handled much better by Reality than by governmental control.

Late at ‘leven last night, I watched the beginning of Lopez’ talk show, amused as this middle-aged guy who (on TV) looks short, baggy suit covering up who knows what kind of body… The camera flashed across the crowd of hundreds of screaming, shouting people, many of which looked fit and mostly young and one that surely had to be Van Damn (spittin image.) Dancing across the stage in what seemed to be his version of a mash-up ‘tween a banty-weight contender dancing in the ring and the smooth moves of a ’90s punker falling into a mosh pit.

Not too complementary, I thought — yet look at the audience going wild for him. Must love his humor… And he opens his mouth and says, “Hey! Everybody relax! You’re screaming for a forty-eight year old man…” (pause for laughs) “…who looks better with his clothes on!”

In a weird way, guests to his show are almost like people going to church. Well — a good church. It’s not that they “worship” Lopez, but they love feeling good, and being there with everyone else who’s feeling good — it’s powerful. Smiling even at total strangers as they laugh at Lopez’ humor, and getting high on a kind of group drug without needing the drugs. It’s just a good place to be with everyone at a scene like that. Like church — you know — a good one anyway.

What brought them all together? What fired up this mass of strangers into some sort of a crazy, yelling engine of laughter?

Communication. Lopez has learned how to communicate. His skill isn’t so much in how to read a joke with good tiiming. It’s how to read people and feed right back to them what he reads in them. He jokes about his 48 year-old body and how good it is for everyone’s sake that he can keep his clothes on… and the “joke” touches a place in everyone there who’s conscious about their own bodies — fear that they really don’t want anybody to see past the careful arrangement of clothing or smug satisfaction that if they weren’t in their clothes, lots of people would be very, very happy. But everyone there has body image issues. Serious, body image issues. If they didn’t, Lopez could joke about it and everyone would stare at him wondering what in hell he was talking about.

See — Lopez knows what’s going on inside the people who come to be entertained. He jokes about the economy being so bad. He kids about sexual relationships being so touchy. He tells about some guy getting shafted on his job and what he wishes he could do to his boss or the other employees or the customers he’s supposed to service and satisfy… Lopez jokes about all the stuff in everybody’s normal, daily lives that hurts so much of the time. And it gives them an opportunity to “touch” the sore places inside their lives and laugh. That feels good.

Doesn’t change anything — but it feels good. And that changes something. A little. Don’t knock it — it’s fun to laugh occasionally between crying spells.

Something really great is happening in a crowd like that. Sometimes crowds get together and things really bad happen. But this crowd — what’s happening is a good thing. And it’s still a lot like church. (Well… you know, not just any church…) It’s communion. Some people reading this know about “communion” at church, but I’m not talking about that That’s just an old play or skit religious guys do with juice and crackers. Communion is when a bunch of people walk into a place together (like in Lopez’ huge studio) and something happens and suddenly they connect. They were just 800 or so individuals, but when the electricity shots through the crowd, everybody’s friends.

“Communion” and “communication”: notice the similarity? (Maybe I should ask if you even noticed their difference, firsdt!) They both start with “com-” and “uni-” When all of us English speakers were all speaking Latin (about two, three thousand years ago) both “com-” and “uni-” meant something “coming together” — becoming one. You know, “united”. Both pieces of the word mean “coming together”, so the words “communion” and “communication” have like twice the bang for the buck. By putting “union” words together twice, it’s like saying, “coming together and being one” intense.

Lopez? He brought everyone together (communion) by his skillful monologue (communication).

This is the OP (uh — “original post”) for this blog, “EmDog’s Unsocial Networking”, but there’s a point to this blog — and (ba-ba-boom!) it’s about communi-

(Like, “communication”, “communion” and even “community”.)

The Internet is the greatest, flea-ridden dog of a communication tool the world has ever seen. On one hand, at this point in our technology, you don’t often get to see who you’re communicating with, you don’t get to hear their voice or sit down and have a beer with them in a sterile, smoke-free California bar and grill. In fact, whoever you’re “talking” with (communicating with) can tell you they’re hot, young and a surfer dude when they’re really… well, not. That’s a real limitation to “communication”.

But on the other hand — I can discover people to talk about stuff with that interests me (and them), share ideas, help ‘em feel better about something really hard they’re going through, share a joke or a new rumor floating through cyber-space — and I can do with with someone living in South Africa, India, Ethiopia or Singapore.

And I HAVE communicated with people in ALL those places! Superficial as it may be, dog-eared and flea-ridden of a disreputable medium for communication, the Internet is still the greatest advancement in world-wide communication to come in the last 2,000 years. (The last really GREAT advance in international communication was the Roman Empire: under the iron fist of Rome, all the known world back then spoke one language (Greek), had peace shoved down their throats (the Roman “Pax” enabling people to travel freely and safely over the whole empire) and had the roads to travel (which roads still exist today in many parts of Europe!)

All these Roman “inventions” allowed the people of the known world to intermingle, talk, share ideas, philosophies and religions with nearly complete safety. In fact, the religion of Christianity would never have spread across the known world back then, and touched the lives of so many people, had it not been for the violent domination of that world by Rome.

But today, the Internet is bringing about much the same kind of international communications as happened in the days of Rome. Except it’s connecting people more powerfully. We haven’t paved new roads across the globe, but we’ve built an electronic Net connecting everywhere to everywhere. We haven’t established a new “Roman Pax” but we’ve learned how to carefully sneak electronically across hostile borders. And we haven’t made everyone learn Greek — but the entire world today has been learning English, and it gives us the same kind of inter-cultural communication that Greek did in Nero’s day.

I don’t know if Joe Smuck (he lives across the street from me, the house with the brown and white Jack Russell?) will ever read this blog — but he might. Yet it’s just as likely my friend Ling (in Singapore) might read it. And though the reading of this blog isn’t very important on the stage of human existence as a whole — still the reality that these disparate persons — unlikely to ever connect in a geographical sense — can connect in significant, personal and even life-transforming ways… now THAT is important.

Ultimately, anything that has ever greatly changed the world (for good or bad) has not happened in isolation. It’s happened because of the connection of ideas and values and knowledge between human beings. Today, that’s happening across barriers of distance, of politics, even of culture, via the Internet. Good, bad or flat out ugly at times, the Internet has ushered in the greatest Revolution in human life we’ve ever seen. Those who ignore it, who don’t creatively imagine new ways of making use of the Net, are going to be left behind the constantly evolving masses of people who are in a communion of communication as never before.

In Caesar’s day, many people throughout the Roman empire never even left the isolated, back-water villages in which they’d grown up and eventually died. Despite the miracle of connectivity offered by Rome, they were satisfied to remain provincial, insular and isolated country rustics.

Isn’t it the strangest thing that a person can live in one of the world’s greatest, metropolitan cities — a New York or Singapore or London or Rio — and by ignoring the Internet, be an isolated, insular country bumpkin in the midst of millions of human beings?

Effective communication is all about conveying your messages to other people clearly and unambiguous

Effective communication is all about conveying your messages to other people clearly and unambiguously. It’s also about receiving information that others are sending to you, with as little distortion as possible.

Doing this involves effort from both the sender of the message and the receiver. And it’s a process that can be fraught with error, with messages muddled by the sender, or misinterpreted by the recipient. When this isn’t detected, it can cause tremendous confusion, wasted effort and missed opportunity.

In fact, communication is only successful when both the sender and the receiver understand the same information as a result of the communication.

By successfully getting your message across, you convey your thoughts and ideas effectively. When not successful, the thoughts and ideas that you actually send do not necessarily reflect what you think, causing a communications breakdown and creating roadblocks that stand in the way of your goals – both personally and professionally.

In a recent survey of recruiters from companies with more than 50,000 employees, communication skills were cited as the single more important decisive factor in choosing managers. The survey, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Business School, points out that communication skills, including written and oral presentations, as well as an ability to work with others, are the main factor contributing to job success.

In spite of the increasing importance placed on communication skills, many individuals continue to struggle, unable to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively – whether in verbal or written format. This inability makes it nearly impossible for them to compete effectively in the workplace, and stands in the way of career progression.

Being able to communicate effectively is therefore essential if you want to build a successful career. To do this, you must understand what your message is, what audience you are sending it to, and how it will be perceived. You must also weigh-in the circumstances surrounding your communications, such as situational and cultural context

This is a blog about philosophy as an overriding consideration concerning reality anything about wha

This is a blog about philosophy as an overriding consideration concerning reality anything about what one thinks, and even the thinking. And it is about semiotics: what it is and what it’s good for. We know semiotics has value. Without it we would have no language, no maps, no computers or their programs, and no blogs. And we would have no money, and life would be literally without meaning. More than that, semiotics is our tool for learning itself, for converting experience into thought, creating concepts and understandings.

The purpose of the blog is to enlarge and hone our understanding of semiotics and its use, all guided and facilitated by the higher knowledge obtained by an understanding of philosophy. We welcome participants as we would welcome enrollments in a class at a college or university or any institution of higher learning.

Operation of the blog is like the procedure of a seminar in a university. Begin by reading what may be contributed or suggested by the blog owner, or in comments provided by other readers.

Readers of the blog can engage in discussion with other readers concerning the any subject text and any post to the blog. The blog may also have assistance and
participation of the blog owner from time to time.

Posting of comments to the blog should be according to a sensible behavioral policy. I like what a colleague, Prof. Doctor Giorgio Fortunati, said in setting out a guidance for the appropriate participation of students in one of his seminars:

“We don’t want to debate who said what, nor what someone said. We are not concerned with what anyone said beyond what was said. In other words, we care more about the what than the who. We can discuss anything said, taking it alone for its statement. We are concerned about its truth, but we are also concerned about its utility.”

Posts should be well thought out and clearly expressed. They should offer a contribution to the discussion, be it a question, a criticism, a clarification, or an addition to, or advancement in, our understanding of the blog’s subjects. Such can be with respect to a general or fundamental element or structure or to a part or facet of a system or its use.

You can see we are serious on the blog, but quite open to enlargement, improvement, or deepening of the knowledge of our subject’s structure, use, or comprehension.
