Legendary Sherlock Holms of Conan Doyle fame,is this a miscast film? Robert Downy Jnr. and Jude Law? Hollywood style, all effects with little in common with the original feel of Conan Doyle’s vision of Holms. The old classic Holms films featuring the likes of Basil Rathbone and the more recent series starring Jeremy Brett are much more nearer to how Holms should be portrayed, but the passage of time has not eluded the imagination on reading Conan Doyle’s novels, most noteably ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’,atmospheric and dark partly due the story’s location-Dartmoor and in that the legend of a giant dog still persists on parts of the moors up to the present day. It may be that CD got his inspiration for the book from an actual legend in which the local squire (long dead and buried in Buckfastleigh Churchyard)takes to roaming the moor with a pack of hell hounds hunting for unfortunate souls who wonder onto the treacherous moor at night,
just one of many tales about huge hounds or packs of hell hounds associated with Dartmoor, all plus more local legends can be found @

The Yellow Fairy Book by Andrew Lang, just one I read earlier - a lot earlier

I am the sort of person that if I read something and I like it, and the way that it’s been written, I shall then proceed to read as much as possible by the same author. So consequently, when I first discovered libraries I read one of the Andrew Lang Fairytale books (can’t remember which colour) which contained many fairytales and carried on until I had exhausted them all.

Sam Pig Alison Uttley

From there I progressed to Folk tales from different countries and this kept me going for a bit. Other series that I liked reading as a child were the Sam Pig books by Alison Utterly. I just like the way that these were written and the illustrations. I read one Sherlock Holmes book and this lead to just having to read them all.

Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

When I discovered Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (which we had to read in school), I began to realise what ‘literature’ was really about. Dickens also had the same effect on me, I devoured nearly his books, with varying degrees of enjoyment (though I still haven’t read ‘Edwin Drood’). This habit has stayed with me as an adult. When I saw ‘Tipping the Velvet’ on TV, I decided to read the book, from there I have now read all Sarah Waters books: some are better than others, but I just love they way in which they are written – I like the style. Having said that, Patrick Hamilton’s books, of which I have enjoyed an extensive one after the other phase, tend to be erratic (the author showing through sometimes too much), enjoyable though

Great-expectations one of my favorites

An author I could not get enough of about 25 years ago was Stephen King. His works translates fabulously to the screen, My hubby doesn’t like him, says he has a tendency to waffle on. I disagree. When for example, you read something like ‘The Shining’ it’s true that half the book is taken up with describing the hotel – but that’s the genius of King, he builds atmosphere so skillfully. Then when the ‘hotel’ or scene of the horror is set and is then so vivid in your imagination - he just steps right in and frightens the hell out of you, lol!

Stephen King the shining

Lot’s of writers I could write about: lot of books and writers I am going to write about, lots of books I have read, lots of books I have read and forgotten about. Yet so many books to read – I look forward to that.

This starts a murder mystery which involves Mycroft (one of my favourite characters from the canon) and his extensive resources assisting Russell and Holmes in travelling up and down the UK to visit some of the most ancient sites in the country, seeking a dangerous and influential man. I think. It’s quite hard to write about this without giving away too much of the plot, which is something I really don’t want to do as the intricacies of the story is what makes the series so successful, alongside as the lead characters of course.

I will put my cards on the table and say that years ago, when King first started writing this series I was sceptical; I loved Sherlock Holmes and couldn’t see him ever getting married, especially to a much younger woman. But I picked up The Beekeeper’s Apprentice and gave it a go, and was instantly hooked. The books are written with such affection for Holmes, Watson et al, Russell herself is a distinctive character, and the events of each (while often harking back on occasions to the past) are all set after Holmes has retired, so don’t really tinker with the mythology at all.

The only disappointment in relation to The Language of Bees is the phrase “to be continued” which appears at the end, and the knowledge that I have to wait untill sometime in 2010 to find out how this particular story develops.

Well worth reading, snatched out of my hands by the Book God as soon as I had finished it, and if you haven’t read any of the Russell stories, then you really should. Excellent.

So Susan over at You Can Never Have Too Many Books has started a very interesting discussion on the use of real-life people in fiction, whether it’s justified, how readers feel about it and so on. It’s a really thoughtful piece so do go and have a look, and I mention it here not just because I’m a fan of Susan’s blog (which I am) but because this is the second book in a row I have read which is very much set around people from the real world and I am trying to look at it in the light of Susan’s post and some of the comments that have appeared there already.

Oscar Wilde and a Game Called Murder kind of gives itself away in the title. It’s the second in Gyles Brandreth’s series (I wrote about the first one here) and does what it says on the tin; it turns Oscar Wilde into an amateur sleuth, and is packed with names that are recognisable to anyone who knows the detail of both Wilde’s life and the literary scene of the time. So, we have Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Lord Alfred Douglas, Robert Sherard (Wilde’s first biographer) and several other lesser known names.

The story is quite a simple one; it is 1892 and the Socrates Club is having one of it’s regular dinners, presided over by Wilde himself. At the end of the meal he suggests that the guests play a game called Murder – each of them will write anonymously on a slip of paper the name of the person they would most like to kill, and the other guests will try to work out who was chosen by whom and why. Not explained very elegantly but you can probably see where this is going. Two of the slips are blank, and the same name appears four times. And Wilde’s name is mentioned once, ditto his wife Constance. The game goes a little bit sour, but Wilde thinks nothing of it until over the course of the next three days the first three names on the list, including a parrot, die in more or less mysterious circumstances. Who around the table is a killer?

It’s an ingenious puzzle and I had absolutely no idea who the murderer was, what the motive was and how it all fitted together but I really enjoyed finding out. Wilde comes across as a complex, attractive and sympathetic figure and I learned a lot about the period. It’s well written and clearly meticulously researched by someone with an affection for both the characters and the setting. Do I think that’s what Wilde was really like? Probably not. Does it matter? I’m not sure it does. Did it make me want to find out more about the real people? Well, yes, especially in the case of Conan Doyle’s friend Willie Hornung who created Raffles; I’ve never read any of his stories and am off to find some now. The author’s note is very illuminating, and that is the one thing I do look for in a novel with real people; some indication of what’s true, and what’s invented. And there are some very nice in-jokes, too. Recommended.

A assembléia deu razão a Zadig.” (Cap. 19 – Os Enigmas)

Voltaire e a Literatura Policial 2

Edipo-Rei e a Esfinge

VOLTAIRE E A LITERATURA POLICIAL

Sherlock Holmes

Aristóteles (384 a.C. - 322 a.C.)

To Sherlock fans Jeremy Brett represented the quintessential representation of a character that has dominated the literature of detective stories. His perfect adoption of the role, from mannerisms to the intensity of Sherlock’s character, leaves an unforgettable impression on those who watch him act.

I was a Sherlockian way back from my Junior school. Having read all of Sir Conan Doyle’s stories over and over again, Sherlock Holmes is one such character that has seeped into my consciousness to a great extent.

To see Jeremy Brett portray this mammoth of a character was amazing. Its surprising that the image of Holmes I had built in my mind, came all alive when i watched the first episode “A Scandal in Bohemia”, of the renowned series run by Granada Television. Then on I have always craved for more of Jeremy Brett playing holmes. What further fascinated me, was how the character of Sherlock Holmes affected the later life of this method actor. How he became obsessed and aloof like Holmes. And finally his sad demise due to manic depression. How a fictional character could affect a living person to such an extent is beyond my imagination.

I pay my tribute to this great actor. His role as Sherlock Holmes will forever remain imbibed in my memory of the legendary sleuth.

(image of Wheeler’s book, courtesy amazon.com)

As the newspaper, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, noted in an article on page B-1 (July 4), Memphis resident Thomas Wheeler has published a new edition of his Finding Sherlock’s London, which is a guide to over 300 sites mentioned in Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories and novels featuring Holmes. (The article is by Jody Callahan.)

Like a lot of cities worldwide, Memphis has its own Sherlock Holmes club, which happens to be called “the Giant Rats of Sumatra” (taken from a tale [so to speak], of course), and Wheeler is a longtime member. However, Wheeler is quoted as saying that he composed the book “not so much as a fan of Sherlock Holmes but as someone who could help fans of Sherlock Holmes.”

Callahan’s article also notes that the most recent film adaptation of the Holmes narratives is the soon-to-be released Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie.
