Entrevistado pelo apresentador Conan O’Brien no “Tonight show”, Taylor destacou a viagem que fez para São Paulo para divulgar o novo filme da saga vampiresca como uma das mais loucas de sua vida – de apenas 17 anos.

“Antes de viajar, nós fomos avisados de que as fãs brasileiras podiam ser um pouco mais entusiasmadas que as outras”, Taylor contou a O’Brien.

“Um dia, eu e Kristen estávamos dando entrevistas no segundo andar do nosso hotel e, de repente, nossos seguranças entraram na sala, trancaram todas as portas e nós ficamos tentando entender o que estava acontecendo. Eles vieram calmamente até nós e contaram o motivo de tudo aquilo: ‘duas mil garotas acabaram de invadir o saguão do hotel, elas ultrapassaram a segurança’”, continuou explicando.

É claro que a história não para por aí. “Eles disseram que elas descobriram que nós estávamos naquela sala e que estavam a caminho. Foi a única vez que eu senti medo”, brincou.

Among Late-Night Writers, Few Women in the Room

Based off this article, I’ve formulate my personal top 6 issues I have with Late-Night

1. Letterman’s audience is 55 percent women; Mr. Leno’s is more than 53 percent, and Mr. O’Brien’s just over one half. Yet barely any female writers
2. If a “dude” is the host, you have to write like a dude. Think about it, all late night hosts, minus the newly added Chelsea Handler, are guys. So where are the opportunities for women?
3. Letterman’s scandal pretty much cast a shadow on women working for late-night TV.
4. “Boy Humor” is keeping women away from late-night jobs, according to the article. Yet the audience, which over half are women, seem to be eating it up. So why not give them a chance?
5. Mr. Kimmel and Mr. Leno both have female executive producers. So big deal, there’s one female in charge. What about all the other positions.
6. And it’s now official: Women dominate men at every level of higher education, in terms of degrees conferred. Yet the entry level jobs for women writers on television is mostly held by men. Interesting.

This week’s Entertainment Link-Off features Kristen Stewart. She’s currently starring in that vampire flick that all the ladies are flocking to this weekend. The books and movies might not be any good, but they’re doing a fine job sucking money out of people. Heck, I’m giving it free publicity by mentioning it here. Seriously, what’s so appealing about vampires that lacks the bite? Nevermind, they’re flailing over that dude who was offed by Voldemort.

And let’s end this off with a quick look at Dashboard Confessional’s latest album.

Chris Carrabba created Dashboard Confessional ten years ago as a solo side project. While it eventually evolved into a full-fledged band, it all started off with his breathy vocals and angsty lyrics. His heartache anthems and wonderful acoustic performances have won over several crowds and established himself as the king of emo-rock. Now a decade and 5 albums later, Dashboard Confessional is back with their latest record Alter the Ending.

There’s a level of maturity in Alter the Ending that many fans will welcome. While Dashboard’s early days were predominantly emo-rock, Carrabba and the band toyed with a more mainstream pop-leaning sound over the past few years. While the transitional phase has ended, the band has now entered a crossroad. Should they push forward with the mainstream stuff or return to the roots? Clearly this is a dilemma that the band could not solve as they have released a bonus CD in the deluxe edition that features acoustic renditions of all twelve tracks on the album.

I never really saw Dashboard Confessional as a band that had that rocky-electric kick to it. I always believed their material is stronger when it was basically a solo act consisting of Chris Carrabba. That being said, this is not a bad album at all. In fact, this is a great Dashboard album. Not only does it highlight Carrabba’s wonderful lyrics, it also speaks volumes about his musical talents. For the most part, the songs are catchy and the scorching riffs are wondrous to listen to.

The band does sort of stumble out of the gate. The first track “Get Me Right” feels strangely out of place. I have no problems with Carrabba’s voice reaching the higher register, but something about the song doesn’t seem right. Even the acoustic version doesn’t sound any better. A small misstep to kick off the album but at least the band finds it footing by the following song “Until Morning”.

At times the bonus disc feels like the true album. The full band versions felt like they were tacked on to please the mainstream fans that they developed when the band released Dusk and Summer. If you are going to get the album, just shell out a few extra dollars to get the deluxe edition. Carrabba is a great acoustic performer and it is really pleasing to listen to the songs as he strums away at his guitar. The acoustic tracks not only brings back the original sound of Dashboard Confessional, the songs also give off a greater emotional resonance that’s been hindered by the band versions. It is where you will find the heart and soul of the record. When comparing the two CDs, the acoustic album is the stronger one as this is where the songs truly shine, especially the ballad “Even Now” (which can act as a nice companion piece to John Mayer’s “Your Body Is Wonderland”).

We get the best of both worlds in this album. In the rock-band mode, there are songs that we can crank up on a warm sunny day. In the acoustic tracks, we can sit back and relax while grasping the full weight of the songs and not be distracted by the clichéd arrangements and arena sized hooks. So a good thing did come out of the band’s current identity crisis.

Somewhere along the title track, Carrabba sings “I’ll meet you where we started once again.” Indeed this album did touch on the musical form that made Dashboard Confessional famous in the early days, but it’s nowhere near the The Shade of Poison Trees, which was a true return to the emo roots. However the thematic changes in the songs are a breath of fresh air. We’ve gone from ‘Screaming Infidelities’ to listening to an uplifting emo album. Wait… did I just put the words ‘uplifting’ and ‘emo’ together?

Last night I caught an episode of the The Brand New TV Show on WPME channel 17 here in Portland . The magazine style show arrangement and humor made for viewing enjoyment as Co-host and Executive Producer Matthew McDonald shared with viewers the happenings of Portland, as well as local music talent Sidecar Radio, who noted their upcoming gigs which include opening for 311.

Matthew’s delivery of the content kept me glued to 30 minute show wondering what was to come next, along with the Conan O’Brien-like witty/silly comments and questions he posed to the guests and fellow Co-host Chrystie Corns.

I understand the co-hosts and set change each episode, keeping with the ever changing content, as Matthew and Director Scott Hamann of Harbor Light Films provide viewers with Portland events with a touch of the Portland music scene. During this particular episode, they not only mentioned what was going on in the area, there were shout outs to local businesses and individuals, and I noticed they cut to commercials of local businesses like The Beadin’ Path in Freeport.

Overall an impressive show, which already has a strong following thanks to Twitter (you can follow the show at twitter.com/brandnewtvshow and their handle @brandnewtvshow). Perhaps some day I will be a co-host or guest. A man can dream for another 15 minutes of fame…

I don’t watch Oprah.  Never have.

So, I wasn’t aware she had announced plans yesterday to cease production of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” at the end of 2010 until a friend mentioned it later in the day.

Did you realize “The Oprah Winfrey Show” has been on the air for almost 25 years?  Twenty-five years…it seems like only yesterday she took her Chicago show national.  And now she is calling it quits because — as she told the audience — ” it feels right spiritually.”

I respect her for quitting while she’s still on top.  I think the best ones do.  Look at Johnny Carson.  He left “The Tonight Show” and quietly returned to private life.

Or Tom Brokaw.  He left NBC Nightly News in Brian Williams’ capable hands and has gone on to write books and host a special now and then.  He is not as invisible as Carson was, but he has left the day-to-day consciousness of the viewing audience.

But is Oprah really leaving?  Rumor has it she’s shutting down her daily talk show to start a new network where she plans to launch yet another talk show. That doesn’t exactly sound like she’s leaving daytime television.  And it certainly makes a mockery of the tearful speech she gave to her studio audience on Friday.

Oprah’s situation sounds a bit familiar, too.  What is it…oh yeah!  Jay Leno.  He supposedly left “The Tonight Show” to heir apparent Conan O’Brien.  And then three months later — BAM! — he pops up 90 minutes earlier doing a pretty darn similar show, Monday through Friday, on the very same network.  Too bad it sucks.

Why can’t these people simply leave?  Don’t they realize by coming back and doing lame copies of their original work they risk destroying their earlier legacy?

Everyone loves an audience, guys, but be careful — yours may turn on you.

Wow, what a day! I won’t be writing about everything in this one post. That would be way too lengthy. So I have decided to break it up into a few separate posts.

Today was the official first day of the youth specialties convention in Atlanta. I have been here since Wednesday night though. I planned to arrive early so I could attend the pre-convention intensive training seminar that was offered. The one that I chose to attend was taught by Mike Novelli, Mark Novelli, and Kelly Dolan and was called “Story, Experience, and Collaboration.” It was a six hour course (split up in to two three hour courses), thus the term “intensive” before the training seminar! I chose this one because one of the presenters was the guy that wrote the book (Shaped by the Story) that I recently bought and started reading. This new method of teaching has intrigued me for some time now and I was continually told by many of my youth pastor friends to get the above-mentioned book. Whenever I found out the author of the book was leading the seminar, I knew that it was the one for me.

Mike and Mark are twins so half of the time I never knew which one was speaking, which is why I liked when Kelly spoke; it was easy to distinguish who he was! The seminar started off with Mike showing a clip of Louis CK from Conan O’Brien called “Everything’s Amazing and Nobody’s Happy.” The clip was a comedic one that basically stated that we live in a world where everything is amazing (we have everything at our fingertips/disposal) but no one is happy. He showed this to illustrate that this emergent generation are not idiots, but their expectations have changed. How we learn things, how we view the world, and how we interact with each other have all changed. Typical forms of worship, engagement, faith formation, and spiritual community do not work well with these students. As a result, this should change the way that we do ministry.

Mike told us a story of how he noticed that most of his students were very busy, but not very deep. To try to solve this, he tried his favorite method of inductive Bible study (an analytical method of looking at a specific text). In this method, you ask specific questions to learn. Mike then told us a story of one of his students that when asked what he thought about the new method of learning, said: “I like that we are learning the Bible, and I think that it is important that we do, but I don’t think that this is the way that I learn!” This blew Mike away and got him to start thinking: “Is the Bible intimidating, boring, or irrelevant?” and “when do they begin to experience, interact with, and enjoy this story (of the Bible) for themselves?”

At Mike’s next church, he tried a new form of teaching with them that he learned form a missionary in Uganda. He tried a method of teaching known as “storying.” In storying, learning is now the hearer’s responsibility. Storying is not about memorizing Bible stories, but it is about it becoming their own story! They can see themselves in the people in the story and how they should and shouldn’t live! One student’s comment about storying is as follows:

“It made me realize…I need to live for the author! God has a story for my life and I am excited to discover and I want to share it with others. God’s amazing story is what we’ve been waiting for our entire lives.” – Michelle (High School Junior)

Mike saw a breakthrough and that the story was really rooted in these students (like Michelle). The students knew where they fit in to the story and that they are a continuation of that story. Something changed in his students; something lasting…there was formation in it!

This idea of storying has really got me thinking and trying to find ways to incorporate it and use it in my youth ministry. One of the main reasons I want to try to implement this is because of the following statistics:

We retain:

• 10% of what we read
• 20% of what we hear
• 30% of what we see
• 50% of what we see and hear
• 70% of what is discussed with others
• 80% of what we experience personally
• 95% of what we teach someone else

If our students can experience God’s story personally and then teach it to others, imagine how drastically different our youth ministries, churches, and world would be!

Padma’s geek credentials are strong.  Besides her work on The Food Network, she has been a runway model, the love interest in an EELS music video, Sean Bean’s nemesis in Sharpe’s Challenge and, perhaps most importantly, an alien princess on Star Trek:  Enterprise.

It’s good to be Scott Bakula.

Sheesh! It’s only Thursday, and already this week we’ve heard about three new celebrity feuds and a flare up of one already in progress…

• Martha Stewart v. Rachael Ray… both are known to be decent cooks and they each have a syndicated talk show. But apparently Martha thinks she’s better. My take=since neither of them have offered to cook for me, I’m going to go with the “annoying” factor, and Martha is definitely less annoying. — Eonline

• Charlie Gibson v. Diane Sawyer...Charlie is retiring from ABC World News and he’s totally PO’ed that Diane will be replacing him. He’s been known to give her “the stink-eye” and “he bad-mouths her openly and often.” My take=I’ve met Diane Sawyer, and trust me, there is nothing about her that warrants stink-eye treatment. –NY Post

• Kirstie Alley v. Conan O’Brien…according to reports, Conan made some fat jokes about Kirstie on his show. She twittered to her pal Star Jones over it, and cluttered twitter feeds everywhere with, “that guy acts like I bit his d*** off.” My take=Kirstie has a new show in production for A&E, she knows how the publicity thing works. — US Weekly

• Levi v. Sarah v. Levi v. Sarah…this one’s been going on for awhile now, but with Sarah’s new book and her appearance on Oprah this week, we were reminded of the tension between the former VP candidate and her daughter’s baby daddy. My take=the two of them are famewhores and have worked out an agreement, I bring you up when my book comes out and you bring me up when your naked pictures come out. — People

Big girls (and ex big girls) unite when being confronted with jokes. Kirstie Alley and Star Jones decided to tag team on late night talk show host, Conan O’Brien, on Twitter. According to the Huffington Post, O’Brien joked about Alley saying her personal motto is  ”No Ham Left Behind.” Alley used Twitter to express her thoughts saying:

“ONE BITCH I’m gonna knck out next time I see her is CONAN O’BRIAN.” “That guy acts like I bit his d*** off.”

And Star Jones with her cosigning self decided to add, “You know Conan probably ‘wanted some’ and you chumped him…I know a few brothers from Brooklyn who owe me! LOL”

Star sit down! Being An HU Alum, where I learned about Baltimore Club music I had to title it that. Enjoy.

Hey folks! It’s almost the end of the day and that only means one of two things: I get to play Assassin’s Creed 2 or it’s another installment of It’s the Internets! The internet is a wonderful invention (thank you Al Gore). When people say, “I wish I was an explorer. I wish I could do what Christopher Columbus did.” I want to slap the taste out they mouf and tell them this, “Put on your Dora the Explorer costume and come explore – the internets!”
