On May 14th, The House of Blues in Hollywood hosted the annual announcement party for Rock The Bells. Marking the 10-year anniversary for the Hip-Hop festival, the venue was buzzing with excitement.

The evening opened with a video montage comprised of footage spanning Rock The Bells’ history thus far. Featuring commentary from past artists such as Method Man and Common, it is clear that RTB has grown to be one of the biggest music festivals of our time.

The video ended and the projector rose, revealing the panel on stage. Among the elite artists of the evening were Bone Thugs N Harmony, Black Hippy, and Tech N9ne.

In true Rock The Bells tradition, the amazing Supernatural announced this year’s line-up via an impromptu freestyle that brought the entire crowd to their feet.

Presenting the biggest announcement of the night was Chang Weisberg, owner and founder of Guerilla Union. Headlining RTB 2013 will be the virtual images of two late great rappers, Eazy-E and Old Dirty Bastard. The hologram likenesses will be on stage with Bone Thugs N Harmony and Wu-Tang Clan. With Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Wright, and ODB’s mother, Cherry Jones sitting by Weisberg’s side, it is obvious that the virtual performances run deeper than 3-D to these two women. When asked their thoughts on witnessing their loved ones perform one more time, Tomica expressed that Rock The Bells is “the best and proper setting”, and the tribute is “long over due.” Ms. Cherry Jones heartfully voiced, “I was there at [ODB's] first Rock The Bells. It is an honor for them to honor him again…ODB was my baby.”

The panel discussion commenced and the stage opened back up to several rousing performances. Tech N9ne rocked the House with a few songs including the blood-pumping jam “He’s A Mental Giant”.

Masta Killa of Wu-Tang brought Supernatural on stage. Fans willingly threw their belongings up as Supernatural easily freestyles about all the random items in the crowd.

Bone Thugs N Harmony took to the stage last and performed many of their hits including those that were in collaboration with a few late-great emcees. “Thug Luv” ft. Tupac, “Notorious Thugs” ft. Notorious B.I.G., and of course “Foe The Love of $” ft. Eazy-E.

It’s a source of comfort as she bears up under chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer.

“There have been times that I sat on my couch in the evenings and thought I can’t do this anymore,” she says. “I just can’t. I don’t have the energy. I’ve pulled every bit of strength from the tips of my toes, and I’m tired.”

Her boss, attorney Dan Donahoe, says the diagnosis was made seven months ago.

“After a short period of time, she was just back to being Shirlene,” he said. “You wouldn’t even know the difference. Her attitude is wonderful, so we’re very proud of her.”

Shirlene and her teenage daughter were part of an overflow crowd that caught the country star’s concert in Burgettstown Saturday night.

It was a concert that culminated in a moment to remember.

As McGraw sang the song he’d written for his late father, Shirlene says, “Having gone through this, I took my cap off and I held it to my chest like this for him. And that’s when he walked to the edge of the stage and called me over, and bent down and kissed my head.”

Ohioville resident Nicole Gailey captured the moment in a cell phone shot seen round the world.

“I realized that no one’s going to get this picture because they’re all in awe,” she said. “So, I just snapped the picture.”

Shirlene’s Facebook page lit up, and the photograph became an Internet sensation.

“I just feel empowered,” she says. “Strength. Strength to fight.”

My day today- sucked. I went to a hospital today and found out I have some kind of a vain infection, basically whole life illness. Awesome. I got an email from my current employer (part time job as a bartender to save some money) that they won’t need me anymore since there is not as many visitors as they would need. Oh well.

Since I will have to move back to my parents this weekend, I went to my best friends place to storage there some of my stuff for the summer. She made me a dinner again. And also, there is a thing about her I need to share with you. There was this concert, Sóley, my most favorite singer/song writer ever. I wanted to go there for a long time. But since I have lost my job and money and all the other fun stuff around, I have decided not to go there and rather save the money. I was convincing myself that I actually didn’t even want to go there. And then Katka, my best friend wrote me: “Hey, just wanted to let u know we are going to see Soley tmr. I am not about to argue about this with you, I have already bought the tickets. Early birthday gift.”

So today was the day. After all the bad stuff that had happened recently, I went to see my most favorite singer with my best friend. And after a couple of months I have felt completely happy. Money, job, health, meh. Being on a concert with such a close person, that’s the important stuff. Feeling the support, knowing that there is someone that really cares about you. Who does anything to make you happy.

We have known each other for ten years now, she knows everything about me and she has always been there for me.  I am so grateful to have a friend like she is. Not only because she just beaten all the bad stuff that happened in past seven months. But she also lighted a hope in me. This concert, that’s a new start. Feeling supported and inspired, I can’t wait to a happy Nela living her simple life again.

Yes, sometimes the life isn’t as simple as we would wish but the right people around you can make it all much brighter for you.

Out of my whole life, last night definitely reached top 3. First, I went to the Imagine Dragons concert– it was NUTS. I’m not kidding; I mean the best concert I’ve ever been to. I love Imagine Dragons a little too much ever since I saw them as an opening act for AWOLNATION months ago. Not to mention the sea of continuos crowd surfers and nonstop screaming and jumping. I’m talking about the most perfect, crazy, insane, and slightly dangerous concert ever. So props to you Imagine Dragons.

The next part is what i think made it the most memorable night though. As we were driving back in my friends jeep the song The Best of Times by Sage Francis came on. {Go listen to it–I’m serious it’s a very relatable and well written song.} While we were listening, my friend Davis started crying because it was like our last hoorah before we all leave our separate ways. It didn’t take long before we were all bawling and reminiscing our favorite memories. Before we all left, Davis announced that he is putting in his mission papers and will be gone during the Fall semester at BYU. You have no clue how proud i am of him. I never thought this would happen & I’m excited because i know he will kill it! I love my friends so much and am so excited to see where they end up in life. These truly are the best of times & I’m so blessed to have spent it with people that mean the world to me.

WH: As part of their “In Performance at the White House” series, the President and First Lady will host a concert in the East Room honoring singer-songwriter Carole King, who will be awarded the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The program will include performances by King, as well as Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sandé, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood.

The entire event will be streamed live on White House Live. “Carole King: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize In Performance at the White House” will be broadcast Tuesday, May 28 at 8:00 PM ET on PBS stations nationwide…

This will be the first time the Gershwin Prize honor has been awarded to a woman…

HEADLINE ACT: Lionel Richie

SOUL LEGEND Lionel Richie has been announced as the headline act for the British Summer Time festival at London’s Hyde Park this summer.

The Hello hitmaker will feature on a star-studded line up alongside Jennifer Lopez on July 14, the final day of the 10-day event, which will consist of music, art, film and sport.

British Summer Time Hyde Park is part of a new concept by sponsors Barclaycard to put on a series of shows headlined by different acts – taking place between July 5 to July 14.

Further acts, including UK singers Beverley Knight, Delilah and Angel.

Rob Hallett, spokesperson for promoters AEG Live said: ”I can’t think of a better way to close our event in Hyde Park than with Heart In The Park.

”Lionel and Jennifer in one night would be enough but when you add Nile, the rest of the supporting cast and Heart radio presenters, it is the stuff that legendary nights are made of.”

The British Summer Time Hyde Park event will open with a headlining set from Bon Jovi on July 5, and also see live performances from The Rolling Stones and Elton John.

Tickets for each show will go on sale at 9am on Friday May 24.

So, Frank Hamilton and his manager, Andy Knox, invited me along to take some photos at the last stop of Frank’s tour a few weeks ago…

I was more than happy to oblige; I feel the people whose eyeline I got in the way of were less happy though.

A few bruised ribs and lots of editing later, I’d churned out a few photos. These were a bit tricky, as for some reason The Borderline is keen on using a moody red cast LED setup to light the stage. Looks fine in person, less so in pictures. Even shooting raw didn’t help these particularly; I get the feeling that the colour balance isn’t ever going to be quite right. That aside, I’m fairly happy with what I got,  I just wish that I didn’t have to resort to black and white conversions as much. There’s no doubting they have their place, but when they are a purely utilitarian choice, I never feel as happy with them.

“Get Familiar” is Clinton Sparks’ tagline. Surprisingly (and unfortunately), a lot of the country has not gotten familiar with Clinton Sparks. He’s a very respected producer/songwriter/DJ/singer/rapper/etc. in the music industry, however not well-known outside of the L.A./Las Vegas music scenes (okay he’s known, but not as much as perhaps he should be). We’re predicting that this is about to change due to his brand new single “Gold Rush.” People are about to “Get Familiar.”

“Gold Rush” serves as Clinton Sparks’ first single release from his upcoming album Disco Ball & Chain, which releases later this year (we plan on dropping into the studio next week to check out the progress). It’s a tremendously fun song with thundering bass, funky guitar and piano, an annoying little whistle that you hate to love, plus two of today’s hottest rappers–Macklemore and 2 Chainz. Macklemore alone has spots #1, #7, and #78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and singlehandedly bailed out the secondhand-store market. 2 Chainz has begun building a prestigious rap game resume, appearing on some of the hottest singles recently (“Mercy,” “No Lie,” “Rich As F**k,” “F**kin’ Problems”). Tie it all together with Sparks’ producing mastership and ”Gold Rush” has the potential to be a significant Billboard hit–like big significant.

Clinton Sparks previewed “Gold Rush” last Monday in Madison, WI during his Yahoo! Music on the Road tour, but politely asked we not leak it. The sneak peak actually featured Rick Ross, who was later dropped from the single and replaced by 2 Chainz. We’re assuming that 2 Chainz was a fresher choice who has (like Macklemore) recently jumped into the music elite, and could be the difference maker in how big this track becomes. “Gold Rush” couldn’t have been released at a better moment–just in time for the start of summer–one of those perfect summer tracks you cruise to with the windows down, shades on, blaring until the speakers bleed.

I went to see Lana Del Rey at Hammersmith Apollo on 19th May 2013 and it was such an amazing night. My expectations were exceeded and I loved her even more. I’m so happy I went and had a great time too. Love you Lana!

Shirin and Ranajit Sengupta

Ranajit Sengupta, young Sarode Maestro from Kolkata, India, had been conferred the PANDIT Title from the Ministry of Broadcasting, Govt. of India, for getting the TOP Grade as one of the youngest musician ever in January 2012. And his wife Vocalist Shirin Sengupta also got “A” Grade from the same Ministry.

Both have performed since many years at Maharishi Gandharva Veda concerts in many countries in Europe and overseas.

Ranajit will be for a short time in Germany between 6th to 11th June 2013 on his  way to London as he will perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on the 13th June. He will be later in Europe with Shirin from Mid July to 6th August and again from 15th to 31st October. They  both have long term Visa for European Countries.

Foals may be a long way from home, but their music translated very clearly to the United States as they have been becoming larger and larger with every show they perform. Coming from Oxford, England the band stopped at Newport Music Hall on May 15^th, alongside openers Surfer Blood and Blondfire as a part of their current North American tour. Having never seen Foals live before, I was anxious to hear their new music from their most recent release, Holy Fire, come to life; as well as some of their older hits.

Blondfire was the first opener of the evening. They are a brother-sister fueled, indie-pop duo hailing from Los Angeles. The band covered Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” to which the crowd was able to loosen up and familiarize with the band more.

Next up was Surfer Blood, just four guys from West Palm Beach, Florida. Their energy was incredible and they’re definitely fueled by the lo-fi amp guitar, which gives them their signature sound. The highlight of the set was when leader singer Pitts jumped down from the stage and walked through the crowd during his favorite song, “Take It Easy,” off their debut album Astro Coast.

With Newport becoming more and more packed by the minute, Foals took their time to take the stage in what felt like to intentionally build anticipation. The band then filled the stage practically one by one in their opening song “Prelude” off their latest. The instrumental track instantly created this ascending, powerful force of sound, as guitarist Jimmy Smith was the first to occupy the solo-lit stage. Drummer Jack Bevan was not far behind him, adding the intensity and beat structure to the song. Finally, front man Yannis Philippakis and the rest of the band took the stage to perform this epic instrumental opening to the rest of the evening.

From there, the band quickly jumped straight into “Total Life Forever” and “Olympic Airwaves.” Both songs are off the band’s previous releases and were accompanied by the shrieks of excitement from long-time fans. Their playing was so dense and powerful, that vibrations shook the venue at times. What is incredible about Foals is the way their music is both powerful sounding yet highly dance friendly.

The band would ditch Smith’s lead guitar and replace it with additional keys on the songs “Bad Habit” and “Late Night.” This added a new dynamic to their sound and performance level.

“Milk & Black Spiders” had the crowd’s approval and the intensity of the song faded to the sound of a heartbeat that became the transition into “Blue Blood.” Nearing the end of their set, the band fueled up to for their most energetic songs of the evening.  “This next song is about getting dirty, getting sinful,” Philippakis stated before starting “Providence” in a cappella.

The band then closed their set with “Electric Bloom,” what I thought was the best moment of the evening. Philippakis, now ditching his guitar for a solo drum, held sticks in his hand as he belted the lyrics. Quickly jumping into drumming and then climbing the balcony level speakers on stage, the entire band was clearly having fun with this song. After climbing, Philippakis shared the energy with the crowd as he jumped from the barricade and into the mosh before coming back on stage to close out this percussion dense song.

Foals ended up coming back out to play three more songs to fill the crowd’s desire. They started with the slow, ambient “Stepson,” a track off their most recent release. The entire band then joined the stage to end with new hit “Inhaler” and the finale, “Two Steps, Twice.”

Overall, Foals can put on one hell of a live show. They proved to have a flawless transition from their recordings to their live performance. The high energy brought a new life to their music that isn’t completely present on their albums. Foals are another band proving that pure talent and creativity still exists in music today.

Second Street School competed in the Music In The Park at King’s Island this past weekend.  Despite the thunderstorms that cut their trip short, they managed to bring back TWO 1st Place Trophies and a 2nd Place as well!  Mrs Maria Bartholomew says, “the elementary and middle schoool percussion ensembles placed first with ratings of ‘excellent’. The elementary treble choir placed second with a rating of ‘excellent’. Sixteen chaperones accompanied 40-plus students”.  She adds, “I owe them a huge ‘Thank You!’ because I could not have done this trip without them. Many parents provided breakfast and snack items for this trip. Terrific parents!”

She also says that “the students are already talking about next year. Severe thunderstorms made it necessary to come back about an hour and a half early. The kids didn’t seem to notice or care.”

Second Street School will hold their end of year concert on Thursday May 30 at 5:30 pm (in the school’s gymnasium). It is free and open to the public. The choir, band, and Orff ensembles will be performing. There is also an art show – featuring the work of our students under the instruction of Mrs. Jody Jaques. The Family Involvement Committee will be providing refreshments after the program.  All are welcome!

Last night, French Montana celebrated the release of his debut album ‘Excuse My French’ by performing at Webster Hall in New York. He ran through his popular records and brought out Diddy, Swizz Beatz, Wale and Raekwon as surprise guests. He also gets presented with a platinum plaque for ‘Pop That’. Shot by JNell.

Setelah mendengar kabar bahwa Sigur Ros akan konser di Jakarta gw sempet ragu apa konser mereka bakalan rame penonton atau nggak?  Karena band ini band lama dan bukan tipe band yang lagu-lagunya jadi airplay di radio, ditambah beberapa minggu sebelum mereka konser pun di media sosial masih belum terlalu terlihat geliatnya hanya para buzzernya saja yang semangat berpromosi sementara luput dari kicauan para “pundit” musik lokal. Ah…tentu saja karena Jonsi tidak termasuk kedalam jajaran guitar heroes yang gemar bermasturbasi diatas fret gitar atau gemar memijit-mijit pads pada Native Instruments Maschine + synthesizer. Pada kenyataannya Jonsi lebih senang petting dengan menggesek-gesekan bow diatas senar gitarnya.

Hari H tiba dan gw cukup terkejut ketika di Istora banyak sekali penonton yang datang kira-kira satu jam sebelum konser dimulai antrian masuk sudah panjang mengular karena hanya satu akses pintu masuk yang dibuka untuk masuk ke Istora antrian festival & tribun dijadikan satu.

Setelah sekitar setengah jam lebih mengantri akhirnya masuk ke area konser. Di tribun yang letaknya persis berhadapan dengan panggung nyaris semua tempat duduk sudah terisi akhirnya gw memutuskan untuk duduk di tangga (enak gw bisa selonjoran ).

Tirai putih menutupi panggung tak lama kemudian lampu dipadamkan, penonton mulai berteriak histeris. Aura hijau yang pancarkan dari lampu sorot panggung menyelimuti tirai, sekilas di balik tirai mulai terlihat personil Sigur Ros dan band mulai memasuki panggung, penonton makin histeris.

Lagu pertama mulai dimainkan tirai masih menutupi panggung lalu mulailah muncul visual art yang disorotkan pada tirai itu, keren (percaya deh itu bukan visualizations yg nyomot dari Windows Media Player). Visualisasi kembang api mengiringi keriuhan penonton di lagu pertama ini, lalu visualisasi berubah menjadi bentuk seperti awan tetap masih dengan aura hijau, tak lama silhouette Jonsi muncul di permukaan tirai dengan cahaya berwarna orange mengitari silhouette itu.

Konser ini dibuka dengan nuansa yang sangat artistik. Tirai diturunkan jelang lagu pertama berakhir, “tata ruang panggung” nya sangat menarik menurut gw, dari mulai penempatan instrumen music, stand mic, tiang-tiang yang ujungnya diberi lampu penempatannya sedemikian rupa sehingga membentuk titik-titik yang membentuk kurva, serta lampu sorot di bagiang belakang diletakan dibawah layar LED disusun berderet dengan memperhatikan keserasian bentuk lampu. Melihat panggungnya saja seperti menyaksikan pergelaran seni instalasi.

Sampai dengan lagu ke-5 “Saeglopur” gw terkagum-kagum dengan penataan cahayanya. Setiap lagu diberi warna cahaya dominan tertentu hijau, kuning, merah, ungu, biru dengan transisi perpindahan warna yang sangat halus sehingga masing-masing lagu memberi nuansa yang berbeda. Panggung tidak pernah dibombardir dengan kilatan lampu-lampu sorot membabi buta seperti panggung X-Factor Indonesia yang lebay dan penuh drama.

Seolah diorkestrasi sinar lampu-lampu itu menyatu dengan irama lagu yang sedang dimainkan  ditambah dengan videography yang ditampilkan di layar led semakin menghipnotis setiap penonton untuk membebaskan imaginasinya.

Meski hampir semua lagu-lagu Sigur Ros bertempo lambat tentu saja tidak selamban sikap Pemerintah dalam memutuskan naik atau tidaknya harga BBM bersubsidi, gw gak pernah menguap sekalipun iya mulut gw nganga 3 jari tapi bukan menguap, itu nganga karena kagum.

Puncaknya di lagu ke-6 “Svefn-g-Englar” gw merasa tidak sedang berada di Istora at that moment I don’t know where I am gw merasa berada di suatu tempat yang indah. Mungkin gw terlalu menghayati sehingga tanpa sadar terhipnotis oleh imaginasi gw sendiri. Magical.

Entah apa yang membuat gw terbang ke alam fantasi saat itu entah karena suara vokal Jonsi yang melenguh melengking-lengking bak seorang penyihir yang sedang menyanyikan mantranya atau musiknya atau suasana panggung saat itu. Yang jelas ketiga unsur tadi sangat berpengaruh. Gw rasa itu pengalaman yang belum pernah gw dapatkan dari beberapa kali menonton konser musik baik band lokal maupun band luar yang biasanya hanya diisi oleh histeria & gegap gempita.  Indera penglihatan gw terlena oleh orkestrasi lampu panggung dan videography di belakangnya, indera pendengaran  dimanjakan oleh lembutnya musik serta berbagai detil bebunyian yang ada di lagu-lagu Sigur Ros.

Setiap jenis musik punya cara sendiri-sendiri untuk dinikmati, yang paling penting adalah kita benar-benar tau cara menikmatinya maka kita akan merasakan getaran dan emosi dari musik itu terlepas dari apapun jenis musiknya, histeria? lebih dari itu.

Kemudian di lagu Olsen-Olsen dan Festival penonton pun ikut menyanyi koor , untungya cuma chant “oooooo…ooooo…ooooo” coba kalo semua penonton ikut sing along semua lagu-lagunya Sigur Ros dipastikan Istora saat itu suasananya bakalan kayak di  rumah duka atau pemakaman.

Setelah dua lagu encore berakhir penonton pun masih berteriak “we want more…we want more” lalu akhirnya konser ditutup dengan applause yang panjang dari penonton, bahkan waktu konser Stone Roses pun applausenya ga sepanjang ini. Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai will be joining pop stars Madonna and Beyonce at a mega charity concert in London next month.

The charity is called the ‘Chime For Change’ and is scheduled to take place on June 1st. It’s goal is to raise funds and awareness for women’s rights and empowerment all around the world.

Beyonce who is the concert director and co-founder of  the Chime For Change, is super excited to come together with other strong women for such a great cause.

“I am really happy that so many amazing artists and presenters have come together to support Chime For Change. Our goal is to have a great time together while we unite and strengthen the voices of girls and women around the world,” she said.

Other celebrity guest include Freida Pinto, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former British Prime Minister Gordon and wife Sarah Brown, and Hollywood star Jessica Chastain.

Madonna, who won’t be performing at the concert but is one of the presenters at the event said, “Sixty percent of the children in the world not in school are girls! Two-thirds of the world’s illiterate are women! I do not accept this. We need to change this and we will change this.”

The Chime For Change initiative is led by Marianne Pearl, the wife of former Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was held captive in Pakistan and beheaded by Al Qaeda in 2002.
