I rarely go to Jazz concerts these days, even though I am a great aficionado of Jazz; and by Jazz concerts I mean sitting down in a large hall dedicated to the performing arts while the virtuosi on stage perform to an rapt audience, as distinct from jazz gigs in clubs or bars, where the musicians have to work for attention. Jazz concerts in the sense I am talking about have a formality that would put Noh theatre to shame, with all parties knowing their parts and generally playing them to perfection.

I have no problem with the format of the Jazz concert. Where it all falls apart for me is when the music falls off the edge of my comprehension, and any reference I can make to the originating melody, or chord sequence, or rhythmic figures is lost and all that is left is one or more musicians jousting with their instruments and each other in bravado shows of technical virtuosity. Which is all very well but the lack of real audience feedback promotes the cerebral technical exercises which override any emotional content that I can hold onto and connect with; however much I admire an artist’s technique (or a plumber’s for that matter) what ultimately counts is the end product rather than the skill with which it was achieved.

I was gently reminded of all the reasons why I don’t do this so much anymore during a recent concert by Branford Marsalis at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; I was there as by chance it combined the opportunity to see a musician I admire play in a venue I have always wanted to attend during a short window when I was in the vicinity, and first impressions did not disappoint with very grand surroundings referring to a long and distinguished history of music and, surprisingly, an auditorium which is not raked.

The audience responded as required at all times. Entrance of the musicians was greeted with cheers and applause. Solos were applauded with apparent enthusiasm at the conclusion, ensuring that the subsequent soloist could get into his stride without actually being heard. A mostly standing ovation at the official end of the concert (during which a surprising number used the standing crowd as cover for a quick getaway, a previously unappreciated advantage of the aforementioned un-raked auditorium) ensured an encore, which itself received a standing ovation, carefully curtailed in case the musicians came back yet again.

During this concert my disconnect with the performance occurred within a few minutes, which was a major disappointment because all the best Jazz or rock gigs have their longeurs, which is a technical term for percussion solo, and realising that I was thinking about shopping lists and that the fridge needs cleaning during the first number came as a shock.

Throughout the evening, the only time the audience reacted with real spontaneity was when, towards the end of the final drum solo, something pretty impressive must have occurred as it was rewarded with cheers and applause even before the solo was complete (a real breach of the rules, if you like). I am not a drummer and so all I can say is that it looked pretty fast stuff.

I guess they really like Jazz percussionists in Amsterdam.

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” (zei de Amerikaan Charles Caleb Colton in 1820).

NJO Orchestra of the 19th century！

In reaction to her concert with La Sfera Armoniosa on 6 August in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw: Stabat Mater by Pergolesi.

As soon as Roberta Invernizzi opens her mouth and sings just one tone out of nothing, you’re nailed to your chair. And while she gently increases the sound and starts the most subtle vibrato, you will be profoundly touched by her musical intensity.

But it’s not just her singing… There is something else, and you start wondering why you can’t stop listening to her with that blissful grin on your face. Maybe the programme booklet can explain? In her biography nothing than superlatives. She’s not only a great soprano, but she also studied double bass and piano. An allround musician. With her deeply coloured soprano voice she specialized in baroque and classical repertoire. And in the meantime she has sung with all the important conductors in all the important concert halls and opera houses with all the important ensembles. And according to Goldberg she is “one of the most sought after soloists in the field of early music”.

And still… it doesn’t explain everything. It’s her face. Maybe the best comparison is Emma Thompson in ‘The Remains of the Day’. Distinction in a weird combination with amenability and of course great kindness. Roberta doesn’t claim the beautiful music she is singing, no, she is giving it to you.

Do listen to her Stabat Mater with La Sfera Armoniosa and alto Sonia Prina, conducted by Mike Fentross, this afternoon at 1pm on: www.radio4.nl.

A couple of months ago I found myself in Aberdeen, and happily found out that the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra was in town at the same time. Not only them but conductor Carlo Rizzi and violinist Anna Akiko Meyers. And a fantastic programme as well – Ravel Mother Goose Suite, Barber’s Violin Concerto and Frank Symphony in D. A perusal of brochures suggests that Aberdeen has an unexpectedly thriving classical music scene. There are about 4, 5 or 6 visit from each of the BBCSSO, RSNO and Scottish Chamber Orchestra – plus the occasional visiting international orchestra and a series from the Scottish Ensemble – all in all pretty impressive. However the most impressive thing turned out to the the venue – Aberdeen’s Music Hall. Behind the stern exterior lay a stunning foyer and bar and beyond them a real jewel of a auditorium – something along the lines of the typical continental concert hall, such as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. A bit of a cuture shock to someone used to the Southbank’s concrete brutalism!. The concert hall has a classic ’shoebox’ shape with beautiful murals dotted around. I’m no expert, but the sound seemed pretty good to me, certainly if this hall were in London it would quickly become my favourite.

Two things dampened the otherwise fantastic venue and music-making. First the rather sad state of the hall. A leaflet in the foyer proudly told the reader that it had been throughly refurbished in the late 80’s! Twenty years ago! It was certainly showing signs of neglect, and looked rather sad in places. Second, there was a rather paltry audience – the house manager said about 600 (50%), and said that that was typical for classical concerts. If this hall was on the continent it would almost certainly be loved by audiences and seen as a huge asset for the city – it’s a shame that Aberdeen doesn’t seem to recognise the hidden musical jem on Union Street.

The second leg of our tour took us to Amsterdam. This date of the tour was unusual in that it was on

The second leg of our tour took us to Amsterdam. This date of the tour was unusual in that it was only actually confirmed a few months ago. Usually tours like this are planned up to 2 years ahead. In this case the orchestra originally booked to perform at the Concertgebouw was unable to perform, so we were asked if we would be free, and luckily we were, although with the exception of mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotjin, who was replaced at this performance by Anna Stephany.

The trip to Amsterdam was uneventful – a short flight during which there was barely enough time to eat the breakfast roll that was served. 3pm saw us rehearsing at the Concertgebouw, although the start of the rehearsal was delayed somewhat, partially because of some problems tuning the organs, but also because we were trying to decided on the best stage layout – the Concertgebouw has a fairly unusual stage in that the flat part of it is actually quite small. Behind this small flat area the stage rises up dramatically, and whereas in most concert hall these ‘risers’ are removable or can sink back down into the stage, here they are permanent.

After the rehearsal we retreated backstage to enjoy one of the real treats that the Concertgebouw offers performers – the canteen! The facilities here are really first rate – and the stylish canteen could easily be mistaken for a chic cafe. The food is solid and a complete bargain at €11.50 for 3 courses!

The performance was very well received by a packed hall, and it was a real treat to hear the OAE in such a great acoustic. After the show we of course stopped off for a few drinks, though I was sad to find that the principal attraction (according to the players) of the bar we went to, a HUGE cat, had passed away since our last visit.

We returned to London the next day, having managed not to get run-over by trams while loading double basses into the coach, and are now ready for the next leg of the tour – to Spain.

Radio 4 kent vreemde conventies.

Yevgeny Mravinsky Conducts Shostakovich's 5th

Having had the opportunity to study conducting with some extremely refined and intelligent musicians in my short time, I have noticed a pattern that echoes through the halls of eternal teaching: don’t listen to recordings when you’re studying a score.

Now, I preface this entire post, with the exception of that amazing first paragraph you just read, by saying that I agree with this philosophy, in a vacuum. So many times recordings provide an imprint on us as musicians and we cannot hear them another way, think of them another way, or distance ourselves from them, which is obviously a problem. For example, my first experience with Mysterious Mountain by Hovhaness was the classic Reiner/Chicago Symphony recording, which has a generally broader tempo range than any other recording I’ve heard, especially in the first movement. And I’ve gotten to the point where I damn near refuse to accept anything other than Reiner’s tempo. I’ve never had the chance to study the score, but I hope when that time comes I’m able to distance myself from my memories, because it’s a recipe for disaster.

The reason I bring this up now is because over the last several years I’ve been particularly keen to the balance recordings try to walk in relation to the Symphony no. 5 of Shostakovich, especially as regards the tempo of the coda in the finale. It reared its head again last evening when I was listening to a performance featuring the Concertgebouworkest conducted by Jaap van Zweden. It was a fine performance overall (Zweden has been virtually touring the galaxy with this piece in tow lately), but the coda left a lot to be desired, for me. I echo these same sentiments in regards to a performance with Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic I also heard recently.

The tempo of this coda is the subject of much debate. In the score it is marked to be played slowly. Shostakovich is said to have “authorized” a basic doubling of the tempo when in rehearsal with Leonard Bernstein. Of course, you can try to have your cake and eat it too by trying to play the middle somewhere. So what’s right?

If you guessed “there is no correct answer,” I guess you’re probably right. But this is where the legacy of recordings comes into play and I struggle with this entire concept. When I attended a conducting workshop in 2007, we discussed the de facto ban on recordings in a seminar, and I asked if recordings weren’t, in fact, documents that should contribute to your research of the music. I don’t think I explained myself well at all, but the answer was essentially…not so much.

But why? Take the recorded history of this piece. When considering the coda taken at a fast tempo, you find names like Bernstein, Ormandy, Maazel, Haitink etc. When considering the “have your cake and eat it too” approach, you find names like Ashkenazy, Jansons, Alsop, etc. When considering the slow tempo, you find names like Mravinsky, Kondrashin, Rostropovich. One need not be a scholar to see which group of names sticks out there.

Mravinsky and Kondrashin combined to premiere more than half of Shostakovich’s symphonies. They both maintained significant relationships with him throughout their careers. Rostropovich, as everyone knows, was one of Shostakovich’s closest friends. They all lived, breathed, and experienced firsthand the Russian history that is inexorably intertwined with Shostakovich’s music. To paraphrase my mother, “perhaps I’m the asshole here,” but it seems downright foolish not to consider these recordings when doing your research on the score.

Let the record show that this aspect of research should only be done after you have completed your own study of the score…as I said before, this I agree with. But recordings, to me, are a tool of immeasurable value when “doing your homework” on a piece of music.

Stravinsky was a terrible conductor of his own music, in my opinion, but you’d be insane not to give a listen to the old CBS set of the man himself conducting his greatest orchestral works. Mahler left us with some piano rolls, notably of the first movement of the Fifth Symphony, and it would be just slackerish to not investigate them.

For those curious to hear the recording that brought this bloody catastrophe of a blog post out of me, I will include the links here…follow the same steps as last time. The remainder of the concert was interesting and a good listen, including a very fine reading of the Barber Violin Concerto with soloist Vesko Eschkenazy.

http://rapidshare.com/files/199846421/Zweden-Concertgebouworkest.rar.001

http://rapidshare.com/files/199853073/Zweden-Concertgebouworkest.rar.002

http://rapidshare.com/files/199846519/Zweden-Concertgebouworkest.rar.003

http://rapidshare.com/files/199860913/Zweden-Concertgebouworkest.rar.004

And for a means of comparison, here are essentially the two opposing takes on the coda in question from two of the greatest masters we’ll ever know:

Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic

Yevgeny Mravinsky, Leningrad Philharmonic

Corrected date of 10cc/Rory Gallagher concert (H/T commenter Milo, publisher of the Gallagher tribute site Shadowplays).

I’ve been focusing on music here lately. For this post I exercised my memory cells in order to compile a list of the rock shows — that is, concerts — by “name” acts that I’ve attended over the years.

The list below is in pretty close to chronological order, but almost all the dates are approximate. Headliners are listed first for shows with multiple acts.

By the way, the title of this post is based on a line in the Paul McCartney and Wings song “Rock Show” — “If There’s Rock Show at The Concertgebouw …”. The Het Concertgebouw is a concert hall in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The list:

Some notes:

I prepped for the Chicago show by listening many times to their quadruple live album At Carnegie Hall, Vols. 1-4, also known as Chicago IV, also released in 1972. It’s possible I saw Chicago twice at the Spectrum. I really don’t remember for sure. Once I think.

The Hollywood Bowl is a spectacular venue — at least it was back in 1972 — with a storied history. When Bill Withers sang his classic “Ain’t No Sunshine”, which was a hit at the time, he sang the repeated lyric “I know” maybe twice as many times as the 26 it’s repeated in the studio version. I was in LA on a “teen tour” with a few dozen other teens, almost all of them Jewish. That was some group. I’ll have to reminisce about that experience here sometime. It’s fun to try to remember the itinerary: The 37-day tour originated in New York. We flew to Denver, then traveled by bus to Yellowstone National Park, Salt Lake City, Reno, San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, LA, Vegas, Phoenix, El Paso, Abilene, Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans. Then we flew back to New York.

My favorite show was J. Geils — a phenomenal live act. The future Mrs. QC attended this show with me and our mutual friend Jay G. During the show I spurned her advances. Did she get the last laugh?

I attended the Doobie Brothers show alone.

Jennifer Warnes, at the time climbing the pop chart with “Right Time of the Night” was opening act for either Tom Waits or Dave Mason at Irvine. I don’t remember which. To be honest I’m not even 100% certain I saw Tom Waits live.

I didn’t have any interest in the act opening for 10cc at the Tower — blues guitarist Rory Gallagher is about as far across the rock spectrum from 10cc as you can get. I’ve never heard of a more mismatched bill. The power went out on 10cc during “Une Nuit a Paris”.

When the Monkees came on to the Mann stage, they started playing the Monkees theme song. All of the sudden Mrs. QC and I and the rest of the audience heard “Hey hey were th’, hey hey were th’, hey hey were th’, hey hey were th’ …”. Obviously they were lip syncing and the source recording got stuck in a loop at the beginning of the first chorus. Very funny. I don’t recall the opening acts at this show. There were at least two. I think one may have been the Grass Roots.

Our seats for the McCartney show were on the field at the Vet. Mrs. QC and I stood on our seats for the entire show. The highlight was “Live and Let Die” — great pyrotechnics.

Mrs. QC and I arrived at the James Taylor show in Hershey very late due to heavy traffic, We didn’t see any of the show. We heard at most half of it while standing under an umbrella outside the stadium gate rather than sit in our seats in the stadium where umbrellas weren’t allowed. Not a fun night. The tickets were an anniversary gift to Mrs. QC that I guess one could say backfired.

Maybe Mrs. QC will add any I might have missed. I just hope she doesn’t tell about the “Famous 56″ WFIL-sponsored festival-style show I said I would attend but then did not.
