The air quality in the Santa Clarita Valley has taken a hit, because of the Southland fires, with smoke and ash drifting into the Valley. Several residents have inquired if the special events scheduled for tomorrow are still planned and they are. Celebrating YOUth Sports and the Boogie Knights Concerts in the Parks will go ahead as planned. The intensity level of the YOUth sports event will be toned down and free water will be provided to the residents.

The City released the following statement:

Due to current air quality conditions resulting from Southern California fires, the City of Santa Clarita has received numerous inquiries about the status of its ‘Celebrating YOUth Sports Festival.’ The City has no plans to cancel the Festival, which is still scheduled to be held tomorrow, August 29 at Central Park. The finale for the City’s Concerts in the Park series is also still scheduled to go on as scheduled at 7 p.m. at Central Park.

South Coast Air Quality Management advises Southern California residents in affected areas to avoid vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. In light of this warning, the City will provide free water at its ’Celebrating YOUth Sports Festival’ courtesy of Pepsi and CLWA, and is lessening the intensity level of various activities while maintaining numerous passive activities to accommodate the current air quality conditions and projected heat temperatures in Santa Clarita.

I am still in the process of learning about various “platforms” to use in blogging. Some days I think my brain is on overload. I just tried out Blogger (the one my webmaster set me up on) but it didn’t let me ramble! It was only two paragraphs long and I had a lot more to say. Let’s just see what Word Press does.

Your wonderful peaches and pears will be here September 12th. Once again the Erie Rotary Club is providing them to you at only $20 a box. This is one of the last harvests from Palisade, Colorado and they are wonderful. Don’t miss your chance. Just e-mail me at Jacqui@DenversBest.com with your quantities and I will tell you where to send your check. All profits from the sales go to the Erie Rotary Charity Fund and the program to eradicate polio world wide.

This small club does a great deal and we would welcome you to join. It is fun to give back and there is plenty to choose from with Erie Rotary. We meet on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am. The next two meetings – July 22 and 29th will be at the Colorado National golf Club (formerly Vista Ridge) and on August 5th we return to Old Town at the Zupa EuroAmerican Cafe.

Our meeting on the 22 features Jenelle Freeston, Water Education Specialist.August 5th Ed Nestor with the Denver Regional Landfills will be our guest speaker. I’m sorry I will miss that one but I am going to Budapest and then sailing the Adriatic along the coast of Croatia. I’ll be back August 17th. Other scheduled programs are Identity Theft and Erie Comons.

Don’t forget the concerts in the Park in Erie. The Fab Four will be playing on July 25, August 8 is That Eighties Band and August 22 is the Hazel Miller Band.

Oh, I love Austin. But I’m pretty sure most of you know that about me already. This fact was further reinforced last night as we ate a delicious cheese plate, listened to Big Band Jazz put on by the Austin Symphony, gazed at our ever changing skyline on the river, chatted with new friends T and C and watched the sun set. Happiness abounded. Below are some pictures of our fun night.

And if you wanted to know (really I just wanted to share) our cheese plate consisted of parmesan reggiano, cambozola – my fav, gouda, cheddar, sliced apples, black grapes, dried cherries, pepperoni, almonds, a feta olive salad, whole wheat crackers, hawaiian bread, some fizzy grapefruit Italian sodas and Milano cookies (that we mashed into some frozen custard from Sandy’s). That’s what I call my perfect snacky dinner!

Update: I realized I forgot to mention that we all were wearing the fun Don’t Bite Me Patch and Jason and I didn’t get any bites (and I have been getting attacked regularly as soon as I step foot outside). . . haven’t asked T and C if they have. . . but I finally figured out what the smell reminds me of – Flintstone’s Vitamins! Yay for toxic chemical free bug repellent!

I was looking online for more information to post about Jim Cabral and his concert tomorrow night at 7pm at Heritage Park, and I found Jim Cabral’s Myspace page at www.myspace.com/jimcabralmusic

I also ran over an amazing calendar that I have been using for the past two years to keep up with events in the community. This calendar is not inclusive of everything that happens, but don’t worry, the people of Dundalk are working on getting everyone one of them, but it is a great calendar.

You can access the Dundalk Eagle (www.dundalkeagle.com) calendar at http://dundalkeagle.com/cal/cal.txt

Did you know we had one of the greatest Choruses in the world, right in the center of our neighborhood? Did you know that barbershop singing is growing bigger and better than ever? Did you know that the Chorus of the Chesapeake has been a staple in Dundalk for decades?

If you didn’t, now you do!

I took some information off their website at www.dundalk.org

Here is what they had to say:

“You Don’t have to be a great singer – just be able to carry a tune. You don’t have to be able to read music – we’ll teach you your part. You don’t have to be able to sing your part alone in a quartet right away – you can sing with our barbershop chorus, which sings the same songs – until you feel comfortable with your part. Then, look among the other members for three other men and form your own quartet, if you wish.

In the meantime, you can learn and perform many beautiful songs until you know them well, enjoying the comaraderie that accompanies regular association with others who love barbershop quartet singing. You’ll never be alone in your efforts… there will always be someone ready and willing to help.

Don’t think you can sing well enough? You probably sing better than you think. If you’ve ever sung in the shower or have found yourself singing along with the music on the radio, you’ll love barbershopping! Visit one of our meetings and look us over. You won’t be pressured to join and you’ll have a lot of fun singing with us.

We meet every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10:30 at the North Point Government Center on the corner of Merritt Boulevard and Wise Avenue in Dundalk, MD. The street address is 7701 Wise Avenue, Dundalk, MD 21222.”

The Chorus of the Chesapeake has won 15th Place this year in the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Competition! Check out more information here: www.barbershop.org

Our Chorus in Dundalk has won:

1961 and 1971 International Chorus Champions (that means 1st place)
2007 International Chorus 16th place Finalists

These guys are really brilliant! You need to check them out! Actually, you can check them out this week at the Concerts in the Park!

The Summer Concert Series begins in under two weeks at Sellwood and Mount Tabor Park. This is one of the best free activities Portland has to offer. The concerts are family-friendly and free. It is definitely advisable to bring your pick-i-nick baskets, chairs, and perhaps some wine and beer.

This is a picture from last year at the first Mt Tabor concert. A great feature of the Mount Tabor concerts is the location. It’s warm with good light, but plenty of shade. I’ll see you there.

One summer evening some friends and I went to Piedmont park in Atlanta Georgia to “see”

One summer evening some friends and I went to Piedmont park in Atlanta Georgia to “see” Ray Charles and to hear him perform.
There were so many people, and it was so crowded that people were raising all kinds of hell. They were yelling over the music for others to sit down because they couldn’t see Ray Charles playing the piano.
This totally infuriated me!
I was 20 years old and ready to stand up for ol’ Ray Charles up there, even though he was well equipped to take up for himself!
He stopped mid-song because of all the commotion. When he did, I screamed at the top of my voice; “why don’t ya’ll all just sit down, Shut Up and LISTEN to him?!” He can’t SEE any of you, DO ya’ll think THAT stops HIM from making beautiful music for us?”
The crowd was totally quiet!
Everyone EXCEPT Ray Charles, that is!
He let out a great big smile and said ;”Right on Baby……..Not seein’ never stopped MY show!”
At that moment I felt such pride, embarrassment, and joy that I could not do anything but stand there and be mesmerized by Ray Charles, the man…. His music… And his words……
Here it is 16 years later.
After watching his movie. I have learned something new about myself through Mr.Ray Charles once more.
I am like the man, not the legend, in that I too was born with many disabilities. I was not even expected to live through birth, now after cheating death six times, I finally realize that through my mother’s guidance and the will that she instilled in me, I did live! And what a life it has been!
Only now though, that my mom is gone from here, do I realize that while trying so hard to hide my pain, to overcome obstacles, and become more than she imagined, I crippled myself.
I crippled myself just as Mr. Ray Charles did, in order to hide his guilt for something thing that he had no control over during his childhood.
We went down the very same road….
Medicating the pain of life through heroin addiction and self destruction.
Oh how nice it feels to sit next to myself and see that little girl who did not know anything else to do……..
It feels good to understand. And to forgive……..
I love you Mama.
