Has the United Kingdom, lost the voice and patriotism of it’s people, do they forget about our heritage and history. Have they forgotten the sacrifice of our heroic and impoverished forefathers, who gave everything they had to save this country of ours, or don’t we care any more. This government and all previous governments are guilty of giving our country away, or selling it off to the highest bidder, now there is loyalty for you. Why have we got a government we do not require, because they have made themselves impotent, inept and inert people by saying, there is nothing we can do. All our laws, rules and instructions come from the ruling Junta of the EU, they say. They realise they have bitten off more than they can chew when they illegally signed our country over to aliens beyond our shores, without our consultation or ratified permission. Therefore, they are guilty yet again for treachery, and still we allow them to continue destroying our way of life with impunity. Tell me I am wrong, and living in the dark ages, because change is inevitable. If that is true then you have no idea what is ahead and what is coming, however, it will not be pretty or what you were accustomed to… Sincerely

PHILOSOPHY SHOULD LEAD SCIENCE

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Any high school student will tell you that leaves of plants use carbon dioxide of the atmosphere and water absorbed by the roots to make starch in the presence of sunlight for use by the cells of plants. As a layman, certain doubts arose in my mind which I discussed with senior students and a professor in university. I should confess, instead of clearing my mind, it only helped to confirm my thesis that every cell in the plant (except dead cells !) re-uses the CO2 and H20 , released during respiration, for synthesizing starch. This is purely a philosophical conclusion,as I lost touch with the world of science in March 1957 after B.Sc. examination.I shall enumerate some of my points :

1) The extremely tender, minute root tips are always growing and require continuous supply of starch. In very tall trees, the distance from top leaves to the root tips may be as much as 300 metres. There is no proper mechanism for transport of starch over such distance, unless we can locate different channels for upward movement of water and downward movement of starch in dissolved form, right from root tip to leaf tip and back. Xylem and phloem tissues are mentioned as responsible for this movement, but in trees like teak, jackwood etc all tissues inside the bark except perhaps a thin layer of cortex, are absolutely dead and impervious to water, being filled with wood oil and compressed by the weight of the trunk. That is why we are able to make furniture, boats, ships etc with wood. Actually, the clever tree is making use of the dead cells as a skeleton-like support for its branches and leaves ,the latter being mercilessly dropped after making use of them!

2) In Silent Valley in Kerala, I was shown a very tall tree, hollow inside, with two convenient natural holes, one at the bottom and the other at the top. We can see the sky, looking up from the bottom hole! The tree is alive. How is water and starch transported when xylem and phloem are absent?

3) In Australia, ring cutting was extensively resorted to, for felling trees. The bark and a small part of cortex was removed by making an eight inch deep cutting round the trunk at the bottom. After about six months, the tree falls down dead. This clearly proves that the outermost live cells are responsible for water transport.

4) We plant rose cuttings. The cells on one end develop into a shoot and cells on the other side produce roots .Plant cells are remarkably versatile.Every cell can split and produce all chemicals required for making a duplicate cell . It is impossible to believe that a root cell will wait for starch to come from leaves, when raw materials are available as a result of its own respiration, and it has the necessary technical know-how for making even complicated proteins. Do we not re-use waste in a space station? Are we cleverer than plants?

5) There is no way for a plant cell , except in the leaves, to get rid of CO2 produced during respiration. When I, earlier, circulated my doubts in this regard, via email,I got only one response .The botanist had only one word-‘diffusion’ to desciribe the process. In the humans, is it enough if we just say ‘respiration’? We study all detailed mechanism in human physiology. In the same way, should we not describe the method used by plants to obtain oxygen and get rid of CO2? The professor also said the same thing. As adjoining cells are also producing CO2, how is diffusion possible? The area surrounding the roots will become saturated with CO2.The root will die. The conclusion is inescapable: cells are recycling water and CO2 produced during respiration.

6) When mango fruits are produced in bulk during the season, the number of leaves are actually curtailed! Will farmers curtail production of food grains when it is required in bulk? Laburnum tree becomes almost yellow with flowers in the season, leaves hardly visible. How is starch produced when leaves are reduced?

7) Bamboo, papaya tree etc are hollow,in the case of the former, there are segments, each one a waterproof compartment . Coconut tree mysteriously carries gallons of water to make toddy. If you cut the tree, not a trace of water is found. Are trees using nano technology?

8) In my view, the main function of leaves is to pump water up for which lot of energy is required.Naturally, they make large quantities of starch which attracted the attention of botanists who hastily came to the conclusion that only leaves are concerned in this process.

9) Maximum number of fish thrive in the deep oceans eating planktons which make starch in strata which receive practically no sunlight.

In view of the above, I feel more research is needed before we come to a firm concusion about the mechanism for production of starch and its transportation.

Today, institutions like NASA have all the technical capabilities to study this issue which should not be left to the comparatively ill equipped botanists.

Another good challenge completed satisfyingly earlier than the deadline. I’ve enjoyed the no-pressure to read challenge although I took it upon myself to stick to the list I created and not deviate. I started with eight titles and added two more to total 10 books (my list here) —actually a very lazy count given the generous three months the challenge runs on. But at least I’ve made a small inroad, albeit a miniscule one, in my TBR pile and also in my On The Shelf books I’ve listed since I started this blog about a year ago.

As far as the Fall Into Reading 2009 is concerned, I have finished it; but I know my efforts are mediocre at best (in terms of volume) and I hope to do better next time this challenge comes around. So, I should have to dive into more books for next year’s Fall Into Reading challenge or pile on the pressure by joining more challenges, aside from this one.

For this exercise, I discovered wonderful Gothic authors like Elizabeth Kostova and Tobsha Learner with their books, The Historian and The Witch of Cologne, respectively, as two of the best books I’ve read . Both have exceptional writing styles and concepts that are worth your time imbibing. But Richard North Patterson’s Exile comes out at the top as well being one of the best contemporary thrillers I’ve read in a long time for its current relevancy and well-researched, impartial presentation of the Mid-East crisis. This is definitely a very informative book written to encourage your interest in very real world issues with a well-written exciting legal drama, that anyone concerned with the Arab-Israeli crisis should read.

A close second to these three would be William Young’s The Shack presenting deep Christian philosophies made simple for the average person, rendering the concepts even more inspiring with better understanding.

To Callapidder Days : a huge thank you for hosting the challenge. I’ll certainly be back for the next.

Now that I’m done and done early, I promise to list several more next time this challenge comes around.

How many hundreds of sentences are used in a sermon? And they all matter. But they don’t all

How many hundreds of sentences are used in a sermon? And they all matter. But they don’t all matter as much as a few of them. I suppose I would suggest the following sentences as worthy of extra effort:

1. The Main Idea. Hours might be spent crafting and honing the main sentence for a message. That would be hours well spent. The main idea is the boss of everything in the message, it is the filter through which much extraneous “good stuff” is sloughed off. It is the burning hot focus that is to be seared into the heart and mind of the listener. It brings together understanding of the passage with emphasis on the life-changing relevance for the listener. The main idea really is all it’s cracked up to be, and it’s absence will only confirm that billing!

2. The first sentence. It’s great to start the message with an arresting introduction. Instead of beating around the bush until you get into your stride, much better to start with a bang. It may be a startling sentence. It may be an intriguing sentence. It may be a contemporary paraphrase of that infinitely powerful sentence, “once upon a time . . . ” (narratives do grip listeners fast!)

3. Transition sentences. I think transitions are oft-neglected. A good message with poor transitions will lose people. Give some extra effort to transitioning slowly, smoothly, safely. Keep your passengers in the car when you take the turns.

4. The final sentence. That last sentence can ring in the ears as silence descends and you move to take your seat. Despite the best efforts of over anxious worship leaders or people chairing meetings, the final sentence can resonate in a life. Don’t fizzle to a halting stop. Stop. Clear. Precise. Having arrived at your destination. Having achieved your goal. Having parked the message with exactly the final sentence you determined.

Preaching may involve hundreds of sentences, but a few of them are worth extra careful crafting!

We thought the unknown substance was Baking Soda and Sodium Thiosulfate because it looked like Sodium Thiosulfate and Baking Soda mixed together (small cubes and powder ). It also reacted almost the same as Baking Soda reacted to the “Behavior in Acid” test.

The properties of a substance is a reliable resource to turn to if you want to figure out what specific substance it really is. The reason for this is because most substances react differently when ineracting with any other liquid, solid or gas. This will help you realize what it is.

In conclusion, the unknown substance was a mixture of salt, baking soda and sodium thiosulfate. The reason for this is because when we looked its appearance it had small square crystals that we compared to salt grains and it was a match. Also, it had white fine powder. We knew it was baking soda because when we put a drop of iodine on it, if it was corn starch the powder would have turned purple but it didn’t. Finally, we knew it had sodium thiosulfate because the appearance of it matched the sodium thiosulfate that we worked on before. It is very crystal shaped, and it’s bigger than all the other powders we worked with that day. So we knew it was sodium thiosulfate.

After completing the lab I have discovered my hypothesis to be correct. By looking at how a certain substance reacts to various tests one would be able to tell if it is pure or a mixture, but one could also tell what the substance is made up of. By putting a substance through these tests we were easily able to identify that substance’s individual characteristics and reactions, in turn helping us discover what the unknown sample was.

In conclusion, the unknown substance for us was a combiniation of baking soda and sodium thiosulfate becuase the reaction to the acid had bubbled up exactly like the baking soda had in the previous tests. Also, the sodium thisosulfate becuase it turned a purple colour and had no reaction, therefore i conclude that the baking soda and sodium thiosulfate were the two unknown substances.
