High Pressure is the Only Way to Get It Clean

Only contractors that use inferior cleaners have to depend on high pressure to do the job. High pressure can do a lot of damage to your home. Wood is softer than you might think, and using too much pressure to wash a deck can cut wood and leave unsightly marks and scars that will show through the sealer. Using too much pressure on asphalt shingles is a huge mistake. Shingles have small pieces of grit on them, similar to sand, called granules. Excessive pressure can blow these granules off the shingles, lessening the longevity of your roof.

Keep your pressure washing wand far from the surface and walk the entire length of each board without stopping. This will prevent any lap marks and give you a clean surface to stain and seal.

Many people will tell you that a pressure washer will damage wood. In the wrong hands, that statement is very true. How than can you perform a proper deck cleaning without using one? Having the right equipment allows you to turn down the pressure, so you’re not causing damage.

The first thing to do is actually understand what a deck brightener is. The term has no industry standard definition so there are some products that call themselves deck brighteners when in fact they are actually cleaners. The key to understanding the difference is to look at the label. If the product contains any of the following: sodium hypochlorite, sodium percarbonate, sodium hydroxide or trisodium phosphate, it is a deck cleaner. If on the other hand the product contains citric, oxalic or phosphoric acid, it is indeed a deck brightener.

Deck brighteners do not clean the wood or kill mold. They do help to create a enviroment that is not conducive for mold growth. They also return the wood to its natural pH balance. The side effect of this action is that wood becomes “brightened”. The use of this type of acidic brightener by itself is only marginally affective. Combine the use of deck brightener as the second step after using a true deck cleaner and the results will astonish you.

The answer is yes, it is okay to use a pressure washer on a deck as long as you use the right cleaners. You should never use a pressure washer at full strength to clean a deck. The right deck cleaners can make all the difference between your deck looking renewed or it needing sanding and wood replacement. One thing you can do to assure proper pressure is use larger orifice nozzles.  These are not always available for DIY machines.
