Summer brings lovely, warm sunshine and plenty of laughter, but it can also bring with it many skin

Summer brings lovely, warm sunshine and plenty of laughter, but it can also bring with it many skin problems. Photodermatitis is unfortunately one of them, and it occurs due to the ultraviolet light caused by the suns rays. But just what exactly is it and can it be harmful?

Photodermatitis and its Symptoms
Photodermatitis is a condition which occurs when the skin has an abnormal reaction to the suns ultraviolet light. There are two types of the condition, either acute Photodermatitis, or Chronic Photodermatitis. Basically UV rays are classified by their wavelength and Photodermatitis is a higher risk when the wavelength is higher.

It is possible for some chemicals to trigger Photodermatitis in the skin, as there are over 115 different chemical agents and drugs that we expose ourselves to every day. Allergies can also trigger the condition, as can a direct toxic effect from a substance. It is thought that some immune related disorders can sometimes be to blame for the condition, such as nutrition deficiencies and systemic lumps.

The symptoms of the condition vary from person to person but they usually include itchy blisters, bumps or raised areas of the skin. You may also notice some lesions which look similar to Eczema and Hyperpigmentation also often occurs too. In some cases you may experience some pain, redness and you could end up with flu like symptoms such as fever and nausea.

Your skin type could affect your chances of developing the condition and usually people with either fair skin, red and blonde hair, or people with green or blue eyes, are more at risk of it. In summer if you spend longer than thirty minutes in the sun you are also at risk and it also depends upon the time you are in the sun. Generally the suns UV levels are higher in the late morning and early afternoon, so it is always better to avoid the sun at those times whenever possible.

Prevention and Treatment for Photodermatitis

If you do not already have Photodermatitis, there is a chance you can prevent it from occurring. This includes staying out of the sun during its peak periods in the late morning and early afternoon, covering up wherever possible and wearing sunscreen, and double check that any medicine you are currently taking, is not a potential risk by talking with your health care provider.

If you do have the condition there are ways you can treat it. If you have blisters or sores that are weeping, you should apply a cool, wet dressing to them. It is possible that in some cases, the doctor may suggest phototherapy in order to control the condition.

This is another common rash which is caused by the sweat which the sun produces. Otherwise known as Malaria, it occurs when the sweat ducts become blocked or there is too much perspiration. They tend to break open and this allows the sweat to leak just under the skin which is what causes the rash to occur.

If you find that your condition is particularly sensitive, you may be offered various drug therapies. Azathioprine is often prescribed in order to suppress the immune system and some Glucocorticoids are also sometimes used to control some eruptions of the skin. If your skin cannot be treated using phototherapy, your doctor may also prescribe drugs such as Beta Carotene, Hydroxychloroquine, Thalidomide or Nicotinamide.

Bear in mind however that the use of Thalidomide does often cause problems including birth defects, and it should never be taken by women who are pregnant or by women who wish to become pregnant.

Your doctor may also suggest that you change your eating habits as eating certain foods can reduce the risk of the condition, and they can help to control eat. Fatty acids are a good example and also extra protein.

Overall treatment will depend upon each different case of the condition. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. It is always better to consult your doctor if you feel you may have this condition, in order for them to give you the proper treatment.

Melanoacanthoma is a rare form of Hyperpigmentation and it comes in many forms. Oral Melanoacanthoma

Melanoacanthoma is a rare form of Hyperpigmentation and it comes in many forms. Oral Melanoacanthoma has not been around that long, and it is basically a lesion which is characterized by both Melanocytes and Keratinocytes. They result in a pigmented macular or in plaque like lesions.

At first it was thought that the lesions were malignant, and whilst around two percent of the cases of the condition are malignant, mostly the lesions tend to be benign. So just who gets Melanoacanthoma, and just how rare is it?

Oral Melanoacanthoma, its Causes and who it affects
Oral Melanoacanthoma is an extremely rare condition, and there have only been around thirty cases of the condition since it was identified in America. There does tend to be a specific pattern with who the condition affects and generally white people seem to be the people most at risk of the cutaneous version of the condition. Black people tend to end up with the mucosal version of the condition mainly, along with some Asian people too.

Generally the condition affects both males and females, though ages do tend to vary between the different variations of the condition. Cutaneous Melanoacanthoma usually appears in people aged around sixty and over, whereas the mucosal variety tends to affect much younger people of around twenty five years old.

Cutaneous lesions are not usually painful and they are usually only found during a routine examination. The lesions vary in appearance and they usually tend to be black, blue or brown in color. They are usually isolated and they grow quite slow, usually they are present at least a few months before they are found.

Mucosal lesions are very similar to cutaneous lesions, though they do tend to grow a lot quicker. They range in size and they can be either a few millimeters or several centimeters long. They are generally brought on by a traumatic event and are most commonly found on the lips.

How to Treat the Condition

If you do have Oral Melanoacanthoma, it is essential that you get a proper diagnosis. In order to diagnose this condition, a histologic examination will be carried out. This helps to determine that the problem is in fact Oral Melanoacanthoma, and not any other type of pigmented lesions.

Currently there is no real medical treatment known to cure the condition. Mucosal lesions may be treated by removing the precipitating stimulus. Usually however, all lesions tend to spontaneously disappear by themselves in up to forty percent of the cases.

It is possible to have surgery for both the cutaneous and mucosal lesions, and in most cases the lesions are benign and so a local excision is usually adequate enough to treat it. In some cases it is possible for a sufferer to receive laser treatment, though it often jeopardizes microscopic diagnosis.Once treatment has finished, it is uncommon for the lesions to come back again.

Overall, Oral Melanoacanthoma is extremely rare but it can occur and it is helpful to know what to look out for. As mentioned, lesions are usually isolated and it is uncommon for them to appear in multiple places. The condition can be treated and it hardly ever reoccurs after treatment. Most of the time people do not even realize they have this condition as it really is not painful, and often it also goes away by itself.

If you do suspect you may have the condition, it is always better to go and see your local doctor. They will be able to give you a better diagnosis and suggest ways to treat the condition in order to eliminate it.

“How are you?” is a greeting we’ve been using for a long time and has spawned seve

“How are you?” is a greeting we’ve been using for a long time and has spawned several mutations, such as the famous, “How ya doin?” The response is usually something like, “Fine, thank you.” Over the years though, we’ve changed our response to indicate elation, such as “Great!”, “Fabulous!”, “Super!”, “Wonderful!”, etc., or to denote depression, such as “Lousy,” “Horrible,” or “I could kill someone!”

You can learn a lot about someone simply by how they answer the question and govern yourself accordingly. I used to hear a lot of people say things were “Terrific” or other such positive exclamations, but I haven’t heard it in awhile. Instead, I tend to hear more negative responses which I interpret as a sign of the times.

I used to know a guy who thought everything was “Super!” and appeared to be very upbeat. Time and again, you can count on him saying everything was “Super!” He was quite a salesman. He moved out of our area years ago and I understand he did quite well for himself in land development. Then the recession came along which clobbered his company into bankruptcy. This snowballed into losing his house, his family, everything. Last I heard, he was sitting in jail somewhere. All his bravado had come crashing down on him. He may have been a positive type of guy, but he didn’t know how to manage his business and overextended himself.

Shortly after learning of this story, I bumped into another friend and when I asked how she was, she looked directly at me and replied, “I’m okay.” Simple, yet sincere. I smiled as I knew it was more of an honest appraisal of her condition than the other guy who said everything was unquestioningly “Super!”

Some people might think the response, “Okay,” as a mediocre answer, if not rather negative. I tend to see it more as a sign of candor and honesty. I would much rather hear a person say they are “Okay” rather than “Super!” any day of the week. As a matter of fact, anyone saying they’re “Great” I tend to treat suspiciously these days. To me, “Okay” is positive, everything else is negative.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to respond to, “Wha’zup?”

Such is my Pet Peeve of the Week.

You would think that elderly people had enough to deal with just getting older and watching the bloo

You would think that elderly people had enough to deal with just getting older and watching the bloom of youth fade away slowly but surely. Elderly people are also routinely troubled by problems such as arthritis, blood pressure etc, risk of strokes and heart attacks etc, all of which tells them they have reached the twilight of their lives.

Acne, Caught off guard?
You would think that would be more than enough. Surely they do not need anything else, least of all, acne!! This is one condition that does seem somewhat misplaced, associated as it is, rightly or wrongly, with younger people.

But it is true all right. There is no getting away from the fact that older people, with all their problems, have not been spared the menace of acne. Unfortunately for them, people at this stage are particularly prone to acne rosacea, which is a chronic skin condition that mainly affects the skin of the face.

Be well informed about your acne. Acne rosacea shows up as a redness of the skin, which may spread all over the face. It does not normally affect other parts of the body. Although this condition affects both men and women aged between 30 and 50 years, it is found more often in women rather than men. Acne rosacea tends to develop around the age of menopause.

While the complexion initially takes on a reddish appearance, this progresses to become a more severe discoloration of the skin. As the condition progresses, acne rosacea tends to affect the eyes, which could develop conjunctivitis, accompanied by sensations of itching and burning of the eyes.

Be vigilant and control your acne. Although the specific causes of acne rosacea are not yet known, this is a condition that can last for several years. Acne rosacea may have something to do with eating certain kinds of food, although acne, generally speaking, is not connected with the consumption of food in any way. This happens because certain chemicals contained in the food tend to react with others in the human system.

If you suffer from acne rosacea and can identify any food as particularly aggravating the problem, naturally you would do well to avoid it. You should also avoid spending too much time in the sun, which is only one of many restrictions you will have to endure. Others include caffeine, alcohol, rich food and hot drinks.

Keep fit as it will help your acne. You will have to ensure that you get plenty of exercise in an area that is well ventilated. Unfortunately, you will have to avoid using cosmetics on your face, or at least stay away from those that have an oily base. In addition, any products you use on your face will have to be free of alcohol, which will irritate your skin.

Do not despair because your acne will get better. Occasionally, older people also suffer from acne vulgaris, which can be very troublesome. This is a condition that can be particularly distressing because of the way it looks. The best way to treat it is to leave it alone as far as possible. Above all, you should avoid scrubbing the affected area. Although there is no direct link between acne and food, certain foods could aggravate the condition. These include nuts, biscuits and confectionery, sodas, chips etc.

Change eating habits to fight acne. In your own best interest, you will have to substitute these goodies with water, herbal tea and vegetable juices. You should also substitute whole milk with soymilk, which can be sweetened with stevia. Vitamin E supplements may also aggravate acne vulgaris.

Healthy food choices for your acne. You can combat your acne by increasing your consumption of fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna and halibut which contain the vital Omega 3 oils that are guaranteed to make a difference. Eat as many fresh vegetables as you can. Eating a combination of fish and vegetables will probably be the best thing that you can do for your acne. In case you eat fish less than twice a week, you should consider taking fish oil capsules.

Other tips to beat your acne. Take every opportunity to relax by going for long walks whenever you can. Lastly do remember to drink plenty of water and do yoga if possible. Try to observe all these tips and you should see your acne improve. The healthy foods that have been suggested will serve the purpose of keeping you in good health, while you are battling with your acne. Take care and good luck!

If you think you have a problem because you have acne, you are right. But it is not half as bad as what you would be faced with if you developed complications from your acne condition. If that sounds complicated, it is more so because there are different kinds of acne.

So let us try to look at what happens when you develop complications from acne. Again, you cannot look at the problem broadly speaking, because complications will vary depending on the kind of acne you are referring to.

Complications from acne, a nasty muddle. Complications from acne vulgaris are mainly psychological. Because of the nature of acne vulgaris, it is very common for the condition to create more problems from this standpoint than merely the physical aspect. As a result, although the main objective of treatment is connected with removing the acne problem itself, it is just as important if not more to deal with the psychological effects of this condition.

If you are suffering from acne vulgaris, it is far easier to seek solutions for the physical symptoms or discomfort of your problem. However, psychological effects are more complex, as they affect your mood, your self esteem and your overall image of yourself, in company and in private. It is these psychological effects that require much more urgent attention. The physical problems caused by acne are much more superficial, although they certainly matter since they affect your appearance.

With acne rosacea, unfortunately it is women rather than men who suffer, but as far as complications are concerned, both men and women are equally susceptible to the effects of this condition on the eyes. This is also known as ocular rosacea.

Physical problems associated with acne. However, there are some aspects of acne that may be common. If you are suffering from acne, you may develop blackheads, whiteheads or cysts. The color of the blackhead is caused by a blend of excessive skin pigment, particles and debris. However it is not caused by dirt as you may have been thinking. All this matter combines with hardened sebum to produce what you see as a blackhead on the surface of the skin and which blocks your pores. Blackheads do not leave scars

Whiteheads and pustules are the most common form of lesions from acne. They do not turn black because they are not exposed to the atmosphere. Then there are the more deeply embedded cysts and pustules, which often appear red and swollen. In cysts of this kind, the pus that fills them is clearly visible.

Acne that is deeper is far more severe, more susceptible to irritation and painful to the touch. This kind of acne is the most difficult to treat. In this case also, the acne may consist of cysts and pustules. You may find these on the surface of the skin, but they may also occur deeper down. Deep acne is found more frequently in men and may leave permanent scars. This is partly because men do not consider seeking a doctor’s advice as readily as women do.

Seek support to deal with your acne. All of this will tell you that it is better to seek advice from your doctor or dermatologist so that you can nip your acne problems in the bud. So do not try to take matters into your own hands, unless you are sure that what you are doing is right. Complications from any condition are far worse than the condition itself and acne is no exception.

Do spare yourself the additional heartache by treating your acne promptly so that there is no scope for complications to develop. Remember that you have everything to gain instead of struggling with a new set of problems as complications set in.

There has been some confusion about the relationship between acne and stress. You could say the jury

There has been some confusion about the relationship between acne and stress. You could say the jury is still out on the issue of whether acne can be caused by the stresses and strains of everyday life. In the final assessment, it has been established through research in certain cases, there could be some truth in this statement.

Facts about acne and stress. But we have already seen that acne cannot be caused by stress. So what are we trying to say here? This is how it works. When the body is under stress, the secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline from the adrenal glands is stepped up. It is quite well known that the adrenal gland is stimulated to produce adrenaline when the body is being prepared for ‘fight or flight’.

Production of these hormones is controlled by the brain. They are secreted along with androgens, which stimulate the production of sebum, which in turn encourage the development of acne.

The other fact has been established is that stress can slow down the process of healing, which also applies to acne. In fact, the rate of this slowdown could be as high as 40%, which seems to suggest that acne could be connected to stress.

Other ways that stress can affect acne. Apart from all this, poor eating habits in times of stress are thought to have a bearing on the outbreak of acne and the extent of the problem. Stress seems to exacerbate the acne problem and could also have a damaging effect on the overall health of the skin.

In times of stress, the adrenal cortex is stimulated to produce cortisol. Cortisol is a steroid that activates the secretion of sebum, which in excess, tends to encourage the development of acne. An experiment conducted in 2002 proved that stress could be instrumental in the way acne developed and the intensity of the breakout among students taking an examination.

There is also a condition called acne urticata that affects middle aged women. This condition, despite its name, actually qualifies as a kind of eczema rather than acne, and troubles women who have been under stress or are prone to some kind of depression.

Beat stress to cure your acne. In view of all these observations, it is better for people who have a tendency to break out with acne to avoid situations of stress, tension, worry and anxiety, all of which could play a part in making their acne problem worse.

If you have a stressful way of life, you may just end up making your acne worse. This does not mean that acne is a direct consequence of stress. On the other hand, simply that the way you live your life is bound to affect your skin. And skin is generally regarded as the largest organ in the body. To some extent, predisposition to acne can be triggered by stress.

It is also been seen that people who work in areas where there is plenty of grease can develop acne. If the environment is also stressful, such as that of a fast food restaurant, chances of developing acne are pretty high.

Other ways to soothe your acne. You could minimize the possibility of developing acne through stress consciously taking time out to relax and unwind. Make sure you take in a balanced diet and get enough sleep. Do remember that you must have some regular exercise every day, however mild it may be. Make a conscious effort to relax every day by reading, doing yoga etc., in short whatever activity helps you to release tension.

It is sure to make a difference to your general health and will definitely have a positive impact on the health of your skin as well. Well, the apparent link between acne and stress is rather thought provoking, even if it is not very direct?

Xeroderma literally means “dry skin”. Xeroderma is a very common condition. As we age, o

Xeroderma literally means “dry skin”. Xeroderma is a very common condition. As we age, our skin produces less of the natural oil that helps it retain its moisture.

Skin consists of loose connective tissue and elastin. Skin also receives less blood flow and lower gland activity. The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings.

The epidermis can be further subdivided into the following strata (beginning with the outermost layer): corneum, lucidum (only in feet), granulosum, spinosum, and basale. The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain.

The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region.

Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin. Dry skin could be due to a genetic condition. The skin loses moisture and may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed. Symptoms most associated with Xeroderma are scaling (the visible peeling of the outer skin layer), itching, and cracks in the skin.

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to treat the appearance of the face and condition of the skin (such as pore control and blackhead cleansing) is common among many cultures. For any skin condition, it’s always better to take a natural approach. Natural treatment should always be the first type of treatment to consider when you want to take the best care of your skin.

Eat high-fiber snacks like raw nuts, raw seeds, and dried fruit, such as dates, and figs. You want to work from the inside out too. Drink plenty of water, a minimum of a quart a day. Put 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your smoothies. Eat foods that contain essential fatty acids.

It just takes motivation, a willingness to try it, and diligent application of coconut oil several times daily and at bedtime to see its benefits. Also use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up to moisturize your skin all day. Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long. Apply coconut oil to heal and soothe your skin.

Dry skin can be converted into healthy skin using natural home remedies. The skin supports its own ecosystems of microorganisms, including yeasts and bacteria, which cannot be removed by any amount of cleaning. The skin must be regularly cleaned or it’ll become cracked or inflamed.

If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see the doctor. Make sure to call your dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. It’s time to call the doctor when all your home remedies do not relieve your dryness and itching.

Dandruff is extremely common and it is thought that around 97% of the American population develop th

Dandruff is extremely common and it is thought that around 97% of the American population develop the condition at some time in their lives.

However, there is a type of Dandruff which is a little more severe than usual. This is known as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis.

Why Seborrhoeic Dermatitis Occurs

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is otherwise known as Seborrhoeic Eczema and it tends to cause greasy, bran like scale. The whole seborrhoeic area may also become red and itchy and this includes the nose, the scalp, the ears and the torso. Whilst the disease is often harmless, it can be a real pain to get rid of and it can also potentially turn serious.

It is generally a skin inflammation and it tends to occur more in young adults and adolescents, though it can affect all ages. It is often more common in men than in women and some babies can have the condition, though it tends to clear within a few months.

The exact cause is currently unknown but it is thought that the yeast germ Malassezia furfur is involved. The condition is not contagious and you cannot catch it from anybody else. The yeast germ tends to live in the oil, or Sebum, of the skin and usually it causes no harm, however it is possible for some people to react to the germ which is what causes inflammation.

The Symptoms and the Treatment

The reason Seborrhoeic Dermatitis causes dandruff is because it occurs in the greasiest areas of the skin, and the scalp is one of those areas. It is possible that bad dandruff is the only symptom and that would mean that the condition is only mild.

However, it is possible that a rash could develop which could be itchy and the scalp could become sore too. It is also possible to develop inflammation in the outer ear canal and the eyelids.

More severe cases are unusual but the symptoms include a red rash which covers a lot of the face, neck, scalp, armpits, and chest. It is thought that people with HIV or AIDS are more at risk of developing more severe cases of the condition.

Usually this condition is a long term one and it can flare up from time to time. Treatment usually consists of either an anti fungal shampoo or an antifungal cream.

Generally it takes roughly two to four weeks to clear up the dandruff and rash; it is recommended that you continue to use the medication for a few days after the symptoms have cleared up just to make sure that it has less chance of coming back.

Is the Condition Preventable?

If you want to prevent this condition from occurring, or if you have just managed to clear up the condition and you want to prevent it from reoccurring, there are a few things which you can do.

Using an anti fungal shampoo every one to two weeks and leaving it on the scalp for at last five minutes before rinsing it off should work. Also, to protect the body, using soap and water should help to remove all greasy sebum from the body which will help to keep the yeast germ at bay.

You could also rub a little anti fungal shampoo lather over your body too whilst you use it on the scalp, to keep the condition away. Remember to only use the anti fungal shampoo every one to two weeks however!

In some cases if the condition is particularly bad, to stop it from reoccurring you may need to use an anti fungal ream up to three times a week to keep it at bay.

Overall the best thing to do is to consult your doctor and see which treatment would be better for you. The problem can be annoying and in some cases severe, so it is always worth getting any dandruff checked out to see whether it could lead to this condition.

Thousands of people suffer from dry, flaky, and itchy skin every year, so know already that you are

Thousands of people suffer from dry, flaky, and itchy skin every year, so know already that you are not alone with your skin problem.

Even if you discover that your dry skin is actually a more serious condition, still be calm in the knowledge that you are not the only one with a particular skin problem.

Your dry skin may be as simple as feeling dry with a dry appearance, or it may become so extreme your skin can begin to crack, similar to cracks in dry ground. Ouch. Hopefully you will catch any problems before your skin gets to that point, as skin cracking is painful and can be difficult to be rid of.

Should your dry skin prove to be more of a problem than you thought, find out if it is something more than just everyday, average dry skin. Then you can take more steps to help your skin heal.

Xeroderma: This condition of abnormally dry skin has a number of possible causes. Certain medications, an overexposure to the sun, a systemic illness, or a deficiency of vitamin A can all be reasons you have skin that is drier than it should be.

You may be experiencing a great deal of flaky skin, itchiness, and other strong symptoms attributed to dry skin. You should check with a dermatologist first before deciding this is the one and only condition you have, but in the case that you do, knowing the reasons behind it can help lead you to finding ways of freeing yourself from excessive dryness.

Eczema: There are many different types of eczema, ranging in their appearance, location, and reasons for developing. Generally, eczema is the result of your skin reacting to sources that can be either external or internal, such as soaps you wash with or medication you have taken.

Skin that becomes inflamed can lead to dry skin that itches, flakes, oozes, and can take on other unpleasant attributes, depending upon which type of eczema you develop. Before taking any other medications or putting on skin care products, find out if they will contain ingredients that will only serve to aggravate your eczema.

And do all you can to avoid stress, as this has shown to increase eczema outbreaks (similar to stress affecting acne outbreaks).

Psoriasis: Like eczema, psoriasis can come in many different shapes and forms and show up on various parts of the body. Also like eczema, scientists have yet to figure out the main reasons the skin condition appears. Psoriasis is the results of excessive skin growth.

Normal skin grows and eventually makes its way toward the surface, the other layers of dead skin coming off. This is cell turnover. However, people with psoriasis still have healthy skin cells living out their time on the surface when new skin cells want to move on up and take their place.

The problem is then dealing with too many layers of live cells, which blood vessels then all try to supply necessary elements to, which can result in redness and swelling. Dry skin can then appear, looking scaly, silvery, and have other various characteristics depending upon the type of psoriasis you suffer from.

Certain treatments have some effect on psoriasis, and like other skin problems, you should see your dermatologist before starting any large-scale skin regimen on your own.

Conditions such as eczema and psoriasis tend to be chronic, but some can appear and disappear depending upon the cause. Most of these problems will also be quite obvious as being more than just dry skin, but some people may choose to shrug it off as a temporary problem.

They allow it to get worse, more aggravated, and only go to a doctor after it gets to a point where it will be a long road to getting back to that place of happy skin.

Need a reason to work out? Here are 7 to start

What if someone told you that a thinner, healthier, and longer life was within your grasp? Sound too good to be true? According to a wealth of research, exercise is the silver bullet for a better quality of life.

Not only does regular exercise aid in weight loss, it reduces your risk for several chronic diseases and conditions. Finding activities that you enjoy and that become part of your daily routine is the key to a long and healthy life.

The list of health benefits is impressive, and the requirements are relatively simple — just do it.

Ward Off Disease

Research has confirmed that any amount of exercise, at any age, is beneficial. And, in general, the more you do, the greater the benefits. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended that everyone strive for a total of an hour per day of physical activity. Sounds like a lot, but the hour can be made up of several shorter bursts of activity (it can be walking, gardening, even heavy housecleaning) done throughout the day.

Physical activity is an essential part of any weight-loss program, to maximize your fat loss while keeping valuable muscle mass. But exercise has many other health and longevity benefits. It can help prevent or improve these conditions:

1. Heart Disease. Regular activity strengthens your heart muscle; lowers blood pressure; increases “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins or HDLs) and lowers “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoproteins or LDLs); enhances blood flow; and helps your heart function more efficiently. All of these benefits reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Researchers at Duke University suggest that the amount of physical activity, rather than its intensity, has the biggest impact on improving blood lipids (cholesterol). According to The New England Journal of Medicine, these researchers also found that any exercise is better than none — although more is better.

2. Stroke. In an analysis of 23 studies, researchers found that being active reduces your risk of having and dying from a stroke. According to a study published in the journal Stroke, moderately active study participants had 20% less risk of stroke than less active participants.

3. Type II Diabetes. This disease is increasing at alarming rates — by 62% since 1990 — and 17 million Americans now have it. Physical activity can enhance weight loss and help prevent and/or control this condition. Losing weight can increase insulin sensitivity, improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and reduce blood pressure — all of which are very important to the health of people with diabetes.

In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, Frank Hu, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health found that a brisk walk for one hour daily could reduce the risk of type II diabetes by 34%.

4. Obesity. Overweight and obese conditions can be prevented or treated with exercise along with a healthy diet. Activity helps to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass, thus improving your body’s ability to burn calories. The combination of reduced calories and daily exercise is the ticket to weight loss. And controlling obesity is critical, as it is a major risk factor for many diseases. Lowering your body mass index (BMI) is a sure way to reduce your risk of dying early and to live a healthier life.

5. Back Pain. Back pain can be managed or prevented with a fitness program that includes muscle strengthening and flexibility. Having good posture and a strong abdomen is the body’s best defense against back pain.

6. Osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise (such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights) strengthens bone formation and helps prevent the osteoporosis or bone loss often seen in women after menopause. Combine a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D with regular weight-bearing exercise for maximum results.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, data from the Nurses’ Health Study showed that women who walked four or more hours per week had 41% fewer hip fractures than those who walked less than an hour a week.

7. Psychological Benefits. Improved self-esteem is one of the top benefits of regular physical activity. While exercising, your body releases chemicals called endorphins that can improve your mood and the way you feel about yourself. The feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric” and is accompanied by an energizing outlook. Exercise can help you cope with stress and ward off depression and anxiety.

And these are just a few of the ways exercise improves your health. Studies have suggested it can also help with certain types of cancer, improve immune function, and more.

Putting It All Together: Exercise and a Healthy Diet

Exercise alone produces modest weight loss; when combined with a reduced-calorie diet, the effects are much more impressive.

In a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, University of Pittsburgh researchers found that people who exercised regularly and ate a healthy, modest-calorie diet lost weight and improved cardiorespiratory fitness regardless of the length or intensity of their workouts.

Another study published in JAMA showed that it is never too late to reap the benefits of physical activity. Sedentary women 65 years and older who began walking a mile a day cut their rates of death from all causes by 50%.

Resistance, Resistance

If exercise is so good for us, why aren’t people doing it?

Some 64% of men and 72% of women fail to fit in activity on a daily basis, according to data from the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. Americans today are no more active than they were a decade ago.

Resistance, Resistance continued…

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a combination of aerobic exercise (the type that makes you breathe harder, like walking or jogging) for cardiovascular conditioning; strength training (like lifting weights or calisthenics) for muscle toning, and stretching to improve your range of motion.

Strive for doing all three types, but remember that any exercise is better than nothing. Here are some easy ways to work physical activity into your life:

Adopt a dog and take it for walks every day.

Do things the old-fashioned way — get up and change the television channel; open the garage door manually; use a push lawnmower.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Walk briskly whenever you can.

Minimize use of your car; walk to destinations within a mile.

Take up tennis or any other game or sport you enjoy.

Join a gym or health club.

Next time you are tempted to skip exercising, keep these wonderful health benefits in mind and remember, every little bit helps. You may not feel up to a rigorous workout, but how about a walk in the neighborhood?

Don’t pass up a chance of a lifetime — that is, a longer and healthier one.

WHAT IN THE WORLD DO I HAVE TO GAIN FROM EATING THIS WAY?

Energy

Sun Power!

Serious—power a small city, build bigger pyramids, apply for the “HELP WANTED: SUPERHERO” position advertised on craigslist, kind of energy. I have never felt lighter or freer…EVER!

You’ve heard raw food zealots talk about it, try it for yourself and see why so many athletes are turning to a diet high in raw foods to give them a competitive edge. ULTRA-MARATHONERS are eating this way! When was the last time you ran 100 miles?

Mental Clarity

I don’t know that I can convey how clear my thinking becomes eating this way. There’s a precision and depth to my thoughts that I DO NOT experience when eating cooked foods. Some might even refer to it as

Whose more "in the moment"? Kids or dogs...

spiritual. I’ll skip that label and just say raw foods are very expansive…

Addicted No More

Three weeks ago I was addicted to food, alcohol, and caffeine. No other way to call it. I was. I don’t necessarily mean in the “I better get to a 12-step meeting” kind of way. I mean how most of us are addicted to these things that should enhance our lives but for many don’t.

Having a couple beers with your friends is nice. Sitting alone and spending your insomniacal hours working on a case of beer isn’t.

A glass of wine with your pasta dinner can be a beautiful thing. Eating whole pizzas because your bored and drinking 50, 75, 100, or more drinks per WEEK…not so pretty.

The simplest, fastest, most effective way to break your food/booze/caffeine cravings is to go 100% raw with a focus on green foods. Doesn’t have to be forever, but give your body the break it deserves. You will be surprised by how effective green foods are at combating your addictions.

Transcendence

It feels kinda cool to transcend food. Best analogy I can think of is the totally in-control bartender who doesn’t drink himself…

So much of modern life can feel out of our control. And it sucks to feel like you are always letting yourself down and breaking your own promises. I gotta admit that I feel a sense of power being able to go to work in an Italian resaturant and bar and only eat tangerines on my shift while everyone else is eating pizza and getting drunk.

One man–a diabetic–comes in every night and drinks two or three bourbons while chowing down on minestrone, a caesar salad, a basket of garlic bread, a heaping plate of chicken alfredo, and some cheesecake. All while lamenting how cursed he is to have diabetes! It feels good not to be that guy.

Healthier Every Day

I remember literally feeling like every day I woke up my health was deteriorating markedly. It really blows to be only 36 years old and huffing and puffing up a flight of stairs.

So many of the ailments people “come down with”, “contract”, or “suffer from”, are 100% avoidable. Please don’t take me as some kind of jerk who is going to insist that all sickness is self-made. I don’t think that at all. But most of the everyday “conditions” we live with are. The guy I mentioned who comes into my bar every night…he CHOOSES to be a diabetic. One month eating raw and he’d be a different person and he would NOT be a diabetic.

Another example of the health benefits of eating raw is how totally it covers all the bases. I was in the health food store the other day waiting for my fresh watermelon juice to be made. So I decided to walk around and look at the shelves. Two thirds of the stores shelves contain vitamins, powders, supplements, tonics, etc. TWO THIRDS! I had a funny reaction–literally–and started laughing out loud. It all seemed so ridiculous. None of those pills are going to fix anything. Total waste of time and money. Let alone pharmaceuticals…

Natural Weight Control

Oprah and Ricky can talk all they want about the need for heavy people to accept themselves and the evils of a society obsessed with being thin…it doesn’t change the fact that none of us want to be fat!

If you read my Fat Kid Suit story you know I grew up being a fat kid in a fat family. It sucked! You know why I think people dislike being fat the most? Because all those layers are proof that you are hiding shit and that your thoughts aren’t your own.

Have you watched the Biggest Loser? Ever see people cry that much? Even for reality TV these “losers” are shedding more tears than I thought humanly possible.

Being fat is not congruent with any kind of personal authenticity. When I’m fat I start avoiding eye contact. It’s a terrible terrible way to be and while I’m all empathy about how hard it is to make up your mind to change it, it’s 100% on you. Eating raw has helped me quickly realize that, and I no longer want to abdicate my responsibility to and for myself.

If you haven’t tried eating 100% (or at least mostly) raw yet, you may not believe me when I tell you that eating raw is NOT a diet. And I hope you know that I don’t mean that in some cheese-ball marketing sense. It simply isn’t a diet. I’ve lost a lot of weight already, and I have NEVER ONCE thought about a calorie, a carb, or wondered how many fat grams I was eating. NEVER EVER do I tell myself I shouldn’t have seconds or thirds of anything.

I pour the olive oil on THICK! I eat a whole avocado as a snack. I lick honey off of spoons. The other day I got a massive pineapple and ate the whole thing for lunch. You know those a-holes who say that drinking fruit juice is the same as drinking soda? I drank a quart of fresh pressed seasonal apples juiced into a cloudy lover of a concoction that zinged in my mouth and sweetened my soul like no other…yeah it was that good. My body SOAKED it all up into my cells which collectively broke out in song. And guess what? It wasn’t the Coke song.

Sex

Oh, NOW you’re paying attention! Yeah sex. That thing you try and squeeze in between cocktail dreardoms and buffet bellyaches. Only a very small group of fetishists find belching and food induced comas to be a turn on.

You know what’s really sexy? FRUIT! Farmer’s markets are the new sex shops. I don’t mean you have to use the fruit that way, just eat it. And then let all that stored solar stuff of life bump up against some other radiant beings overflow. In other words, sex is better the more raw foods you eat.

NO idea who this guy is, but HE'S got the right idea!

Having that youthful raw foods “glow” and lightness of being make you FEEL sexy at any age. That kind of confidence and feeling of self-worth is the only real aphrodisiac…

The Environment & Animals Everywhere Will Thank You

This one is obvious to most people. I’m not going to get all science right now. There are tons of great resources out there regarding the undeniable connection between what we eat and the environment. If anything, I’m sick of the words “green,” “sustainable,” “vegan,” and “carbon footprint.” These are becoming marketing buzz words, overused, and to me they are often elitist terms with very little real world application for the majority of the worlds population.

I wasn’t attracted to raw foods for ethical reasons. If anything I’m a borderline Nihilist who is completely A-political. But, what we do most of the time makes the largest impact in our personal lives and on the human family as a whole. Eating less meat and dairy has a far greater impact than driving a Prius does…

I’m not an “animal lover,” but the more raw foods I eat the more empathy I feel for animals, other people, and myself. Having apparently turned my hatred toward plants, I’m now regularly butchering papayas the size of infant children and braining coconuts to get at their sweet innards. You can’t please every species all of the time I guess. Besides, the other day when I drove by a small farm, the chickens waved.

My Conclusions

I’m sure there are heaps more benefits that I don’t even know about yet. I’m only just beginning with all of this. Three weeks in I’m loving the results and wanting more.

Can I do this 100% of the time? Probably not. And I don’t think that’s what matters anyways. But I can see myself mostly raw from here forward.

Your Input

What are some benefits to eating raw that you have experienced and that I failed to mention? What percentage (roughly) of your diet comes from raw foods? What do you like/dislike about the raw food movement?

PLEASE comment and join in on the discussion!

P.S.

Tomorrow I weigh myself and will post the result of week three’s weight loss. All while NOT dieting. So please check back for that and more!

Thanks!

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the condition of the skin is common among many cu

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the condition of the skin is common among many cultures. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

Skin contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels. The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region. The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings.

If you break out on the skin around your eyes, it could be the shellac in your mascara; buy a shellac-free mascara like Ecco Bella’s. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins, can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes.

Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low. When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated. Forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is.

Consider taking cod liver oil or fish oil supplements, in liquid form, every day. The two most common problems that affect your skin are: not drinking enough water and not eating enough fiber. I put two tablespoons of coconut oil in my smoothies, which are made with fruits only – using a base of two bananas, then adding fruit, frozen or fresh– blend well.

If you use moisturizers, use the thick, oily-type which work better for dry skin. Avoid all products that have an alcohol base. For any skin condition, it’s always better to take a natural approach.

Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips. Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long; but better yet, apply more coconut oil. Use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up, if you wear it, to moisturize and soften your skin throughout the day.

Apply coconut oil daily to your skin to heal, moisturize and soothe it. Coconut oil is very inexpensive – a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions.

Skin that’s not clean favors the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on its surface. The skin is subject to constant attack from without; it can be affected by many conditions, diseases and ailments.

Following some of the above treatments, your dry skin should be well on its way to recovery. You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following using these dry skin tips and suggestions. If you’re still worried about your skin, or the problems persist, see your skin doctor.

Today I had what you’d probably call my “proper” booking in appointment with the m

Today I had what you’d probably call my “proper” booking in appointment with the midwife at the hospital.

I actually was expecting a consultant appointment, and a midwife appointment (cos that’s what it said on the letter) but actually it was only with the midwife.

It was all pretty routine, updating my details and taking a few notes about Lilly’s birth. We talked very briefly about me wanting a VBAC but she said the consultant is the person who’ll really talk about that with me. She had a quick scan over my labour notes and said the reason had been put down as “fetal distress” and “failture to progress”, and she said that those reasons meant it shouldn’t be a problem if I want to “try again”.

I agreed to all the blood tests, but I’m not having the triple test / quad test which screens for likelihood of Down’s Syndrome. I did have it last time, and it all came back fine, but last year my friend had a really horrible experience after coming back high risk. She had to agonise over whether or not to have the amniocentisis procedure (which carries a risk of miscarriage but will tell you 100% if your baby has Down’s). While my poor friend was making up her mind I spent a lot of time thinking about it and what I would do if I were in her position.

In my first pregnancy, I just said yes to every test going and never worried about anything. But since then, I’ve learnt that those triple tests are pretty inaccurate, and can give you a worryingly high risk factor when, in fact, your baby is just fine. It’s really a matter of personal choice but I really don’t think I could risk an amnio and the possibility of miscarrying a healthy baby, or the even worse option of getting rid of a baby just because it had Down’s. So the test really isn’t of any interest to me. I hope and pray that my baby will be fine, of course, but I could never get rid of it if it wasn’t. So, that’s why I’ve made my decision. Hubby was a bit unsure at first but I think he now understands my reasons and is supportive of them.

Incidentally, my friend did have her amnio, her baby was unaffected and the test results were clear.

Anyway, I had my other blood tests and got my bounty pack, and that was it. Roll on two weeks and the 12 week scan!

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the s

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the skin is common among many cultures. There are a number of excellent natural treatments to help heal your dry skin, virtually overnight.

The outermost layer of epidermis consists of 25 to 30 layers of dead cells. The blood vessels in the dermis provide nourishment and waste removal to its own cells as well as to the epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes.

When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated. The symptoms most associated with dry skin are: scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching, and cracks in the skin. Dry skin can be due to a genetic condition but it’s not common.

Eating fruits that are red or orange in color will help improve you skin health and help to prevent acne. Eat at least two organic apples a day while working to clear up your skin; apples are good for skin health – organic so you can eat pesticide-free skin (most of the apple pectin is in the skin), which helps with constipation too. The next time you want to have a snack, instead of junk food, help your skin – have an apple, orange, peach, pear, banana, plum, grapes, cherries, berries, cantaloupe or any other fresh fruit.

Drink plenty of pure, filtered water or spring water every day; at least a quart or more. Use as little soap as possible, if you have to use any, limiting its use to the armpits and genital area. Apply cool compresses to any itchy areas.

When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized. Use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up, if you wear it, to moisturize and soften your skin throughout the day. If you have acne, eczema or any type of dermatitis coconut oil will treat and quickly heal these skin conditions too.

Dry skin contributes to fine lines and wrinkles; coconut oil helps prevent the onset by keeping the skin soft and supple. Coconut oil is very inexpensive – a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions.

Many skin conditions can be converted into clear, healthy skin by using natural home remedies. Functions of the skin are disturbed when it’s not clean; it becomes more easily damaged, the release of antibacterial compounds decreases and it’s more prone to develop infections.

Continue using coconut oil and you’ll see the benefits in good, clear skin, free of dryness and other skin conditions. Call your skin doctor if dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping. If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see your doctor.

Dry skin is easily treatable today when you know how to take care of it both inside and out. Natural

Dry skin is easily treatable today when you know how to take care of it both inside and out. Natural treatments for dry skin are the best choice, rather than harsh chemical treatments.

The epidermis contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the uppermost layers of the dermis. The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain. Our skin has many nerve endings that provide the sense of touch and heat.

Dry skin can be due to a genetic condition but it’s not common. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else. When the skin loses moisture it may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed.

The symptoms most associated with dry skin are: scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching, and cracks in the skin. Dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, seborrhea or psoriasis may cause the skin to become very dry too. Dry skin can also be a sign of an underactive thyroid.

Drink freshly extracted carrot juice, if you can, every day; carrot juice is an excellent cleanser for the liver, great for the skin and contains a great deal of nutrients, all beneficial for dry skin, eczema, acne, zits, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other breakouts. It’s important to eat foods that are high in omega-3’s for your dry skin or acne. I put two tablespoons of coconut oil in my smoothies, which are made with fruits only – using a base of two bananas, then adding fruit, frozen or fresh– blend well.

For any skin condition, it’s always better to take a natural approach. If you use moisturizers, use the thick, oily-type which work better for dry skin. Keep baths or showers short using warm, never hot water.

Use can use bath oils and moisturizers every day, but coconut oil has the added power of healing. Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips. When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized.

I buy coconut oil by the gallon; it’s cheaper for a whole gallon of coconut oil than a small jar of department store, name-brand moisturizer. Apply coconut oil daily to your skin to heal, moisturize and soothe it.

The skin supports its own ecosystem of microorganisms, including yeasts and bacteria, which cannot be removed by any amount of cleaning. Sunlight, water and air play an important role in keeping the skin healthy.
You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following these dry skin tips and suggestions. Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. And did I mention to drink lots and lots of water every day?

Only a lucky few of us have ‘normal’ skin; the rest of us have dry, oily or combination skin; if dryness is your skin problem, read on. The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the skin, like covering of pores and blackheads, is common among many cultures.

Skin is one of the most important parts of the body; it’s our largest organ. The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low. Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated.

Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes. If you break out on the skin around your eyes, it could be the shellac in your mascara; buy a shellac-free mascara like Ecco Bella’s. Skin gets exposed to the elements, especially in winter, causing it to become drier.

Get 20-30 minutes of sunshine daily on your arms and/or legs; sunshine triggers the body’s production of Vitamin D3, which is essential to having healthy skin. Eat at least two organic apples a day while working to clear up your skin; apples are good for skin health – organic so you can eat pesticide-free skin (most of the apple pectin is in the skin), which helps with constipation too. Eating fruits that are red or orange in color will help improve you skin health and help to prevent acne.

Apply cool compresses to any itchy areas. Take fewer baths or showers; they’ll dry out your skin even more. Try using a humidifier if the air is dry and you have a severe skin condition.

Use can use bath oils and moisturizers every day, but coconut oil has the added power of healing. When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized.
Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. If you’re still worried about your skin, or the problems persist, see your skin doctor. Continue using coconut oil and you’ll see the benefits in good, clear skin, free of dryness and other skin conditions.

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the skin, like control of the pores and covering blackheads, is common among many cultures. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

Our skin has many nerve endings that provide the sense of touch and heat. Our skin also receives less blood flow and lower gland activity than the other organs in our body. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes.

Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low. Environmental factors, such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps, can cause dry skin. When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated.

Good nutrition from living foods – foods that are alive – will help your skin from the inside out. Get 20-30 minutes of sunshine daily on your arms and/or legs; sunshine triggers the body’s production of Vitamin D3, which is essential to having healthy skin.
Keep baths or showers short using warm, never hot water. Use bath oils and moisturizers, or better yet, coconut oil, daily. Natural treatments should always be the first type of treatments to consider when you want to heal and take the best care of your skin.

When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized. Apply coconut oil daily to your skin to heal, moisturize and soothe it. Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips.

Coconut oil is the best healing, soothing, and moisturizing treatment I’ve found for dry skin; in fact all types of skin conditions, skin eruptions, pimples, acne, milia, irritations, cuts, burns, fungus, etc. Use can use bath oils and moisturizers every day, but coconut oil has the added power of healing.

Functions of the skin are disturbed when it’s not clean; it becomes more easily damaged, the release of antibacterial compounds decreases and it’s more prone to develop infections. The skin must be regularly cleaned or it’ll become cracked or inflamed.

If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see your doctor. Usually we can take care of dry skin without seeing our doctor, but sometimes we can’t avoid it. Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal.

The symptoms most associated with dry skin are scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching and cracks in the skin. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

The dermis is tightly connected to the epidermis by a basement membrane. Skin is one of the most important parts of the body; it’s our largest organ. The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain.

Dry skin can also be a sign of an underactive thyroid. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else.

Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your pharmacist or doctor and read the drug insert – you can get one from your pharmacist. Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low.

Good clear skin is usually a reflection of having a good working non-constipated digestive system. I put two tablespoons of coconut oil in my smoothies, which are made with fruits only – using a base of two bananas, then adding fruit, frozen or fresh– blend well. Good nutrition from living foods – foods that are alive – will help your skin from the inside out.

Apply cool compresses to any itchy areas. For any skin condition, it’s always better to take a natural approach. Try using a humidifier if the air is dry and you have a severe skin condition.

After a soothing bath or shower at night just before bedtime, apply a thin layer of coconut oil over your entire body; it’ll even last on your skin through your shower in the morning. Coconut oil is very inexpensive – a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions. When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized.

Continue using coconut oil and you’ll see the benefits in good, clear skin, free of dryness and other skin conditions. You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following these dry skin tips and suggestions. Call your skin doctor if dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping.

Although many people believed that acne is caused because a person’s skin is too oily, those w

Although many people believed that acne is caused because a person’s skin is too oily, those with dry skin are just as susceptible to the condition as well. Today more than 20% of all adults are affected by acne and this can often be caused by using very harsh products on their skin. However there are certain acne skin care treatment products that can further cause a person’s skin to dry out and only exacerbate their acne even further.

Certainly the best way to treat any form of acne is through prevention. It is important that a person chooses a skin care treatment product which will not dry their skin out or cause any further damage to it. However it does not matter what type of skin you have as long as you understand what actually causes it, then you will find it much easier to prevent as well as treat your acne problem.

Most of the skin care treatments available for acne are likely to make the underlying causes of the problem much worse. Many of these actually contain sulfur or resorcinol or benzyl peroxide and these all help to dry up the excess oil that is being produced by a person’s sebaceous glands but can also cause a person’s skin to dry out more during the actual treatment process. Therefore although it may have prevented further oil from being produced it will cause the skin to dry out and this will then exacerbate the skin condition further. In fact what you have done is actually caused yourself another problem because your fine lines and wrinkles will begin to develop and so you have actually accelerated the process of aging in your skin. So it may be better to just blot the excess oil as it certainly will not cause the condition to become any worse.

To be honest if many people used less of these cleansing and skin products the incidents of acne would probably be much less. Instead people should look at using mild skin products as these will not damage their skin and understand their skin condition a little better. Understanding your skin and acne condition will help you determine the type of acne skin care treatment product to use.
