Prison Planet.com
September 10, 2009

Actor Charlie Sheen has followed up on his “20 Minutes With The President” letter by directly addressing President Obama in a You Tube clip to request he use his executive power to reopen the investigation into 9/11 and its aftermath.

On Tuesday, Sheen published a fictional account of a meeting with the President on radio talk show host Alex Jones’ Infowars.com and Prison Planet.com websites in which Obama was confronted about what Sheen alleges is a cover-up surrounding 9/11. In his letter, Sheen requests a real meeting with Barack Obama.

Now Sheen has taken his challenge a step further by appearing in a You Tube video that asks Obama to “be on the right side of history” by reopening an investigation into 9/11, while highlighting that the majority of the 9/11 Commission members have publicly dismissed the official government version of the attacks as a deception, with former Senator and Commission member Max Cleland labeling the government response to the Commission’s questions as “disgusting” and “a scam”.

Sheen highlights several issues in the video, including the unexplained collapse of WTC 7, a 47-story building that was not hit by a plane yet collapsed in free fall fashion into its own footprint within 7 seconds later in the afternoon on September 11. He also cites multiple reports from firefighters, police, first responders and others who were at ground zero and who all described explosions before the collapse of the twin towers and Building 7.

He also discusses how former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds broke her gag order to go public with the revelation that Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were working with the U.S. government right up until the day of 9/11.

Sheen also demands to know why NORAD’s standard operating procedure was not followed on 9/11, allowing the hijacked jetliners to find their targets, asking, “Where were the planes?”

Sheen expresses his hope that President Obama has read his letter, adding, “We have questions Mr. President, lots of questions….people of the United States and the world demand the truth sir,” adding that Obama has the power and the responsibility to initiate “a truly independent Congressional investigation into the events of 9/11 as well as its aftermath.”

“We want our country back Mr. President, therefore I’m not just calling on you I’m calling on your team, I’m calling on each and every American citizen to wake up, stand up, and demand the truth,” states Sheen in the video.

Chavez ? Proteção da Coréia do Norte? Inspirações democráticas do Irã? Farc ?

Military Based in Colombia Doesn’t ‘Please’ Him “

It’s even worse for old Republican white men! I mean, just a few weeks ago Neut Gingrich expressed his fear at being before Judge Sotomayor, quickly followed by Republican leader Limbaugh, who even compared her nomination akin to nominating fellow Republican David Duke! As an example, he noted accusations that Bush and Cheney had lied about Saddam Hussein’s possession of weapons of mass destruction in making the case for the invasion of Iraq. “They never say Colin Powell lied,” Rumsfeld asserted. “They don’t say Condi lied.”

Oh My! Talk about throwing Condi and Powell under the bus!

Do you think we should wait for a book by a black conservative insider on how the culture of rich conservative white men victimology caused the economic meltdown?

You betcha!

It’s a real worry when the question is no longer “Did our troop torture detainees?” and instead becomes “Was it worth it?” This sort of ends justifies the means nonsense is repugnant in the extreme. And it is telling sign of just how far America went down the fascist rabbit-hole under the Bush administration that Cheney and Rove are on Fox News justifyingtheir government’s use of torture. That they’re not even bothering to deny it is what’s truly odious. Call me crazy here, but I thought that the terrorists were supposed to be “out there” not “in here”. Whilst it has every chance of becoming nothing more than a show-trial, Obama has a moral responsibility to persecute these guys, along with ex-President Bush, to the furthest extent possible in order to make an example of them. I know that’s highly unlikely to happen – but it’s what he should do.

Yes, it does, as Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby knows To answer the question in the headline of this post

Yes, it does, as Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby knows

To answer the question in the headline of this post … maybe. How’s that for fine journalism?

The job of Pacific-10 commissioner is officially open on July 1. Bowlsby, the athletic director from 1991 to 2006 at the University of Iowa, presently holds a similar job at Stanford University.

Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News lists several potential candidates at http://tinyurl.com/aj2zb6.

About Bowlsby, he wrote this:

Everyone I talk to believes Bowlsby wants the job, and yet he’s on record saying he’s not a candidate.

The way it has been explained to me: After the executive committee reviews the candidates provided by Bowlsby’s committee, Hennessy turns to BB and says, essentially: “We’re not sold on any of them. What about you, Bob?”

Bowlsby worked in the Big Ten and is considered very savvy in the ways of multimedia and TV and business matters.

But just as Al Gore didn’t carry Tennessee in the 2000 presidential election and even the great Alex Rodriguez has been booed in New York, not every Stanford supporter is a Bowlsby supporter. Check the comments portion of Wilner’s blog post to see what I’m talking about.

Speaking of which, here’s the last paragraph of his blog item:

Again, everyone I talk to — Stanford folks, Pac-10 folks, non-Pac-10 folks — thinks the league will eventually get back to Bowlsby and offer him the job. Until there’s reason not to, I’m going to take him at his word.

Bowlsby’s not going to retire as the AD at Stanford. Running the Pac-10 may not be the dream of Condolezza Rice (see Wilner’s article), but it’s got to be a pretty good gig for career athletic-department people.

TAMPA, Fla. — I went to the Philadelphia Flyers-Tampa Bay Lightning game Friday night.

Why? The ticket was free, the arena is a block from my hotel, and it was actually a good place to escape the zooiness and claustrophobia of what’s going on around here for a few hours.

In walking toward the Channelside restaurant/nightclub district before the game, a long line snaked down a sidewalk. People were waiting to get into the Bud Bowl, which is no longer an animated television commercial, but instead a concert event of some sort.

Snoop Dogg was the master of ceremonies. And like I said, people were lined up for a long way, waiting to get in. My theory: People love Snoop Dogg.

But … that doesn’t mean it was solid gold box office. Lots of would-be scalpers were on street corners looking forlorn, unable to dispose of Bud Bowl tickets. They were asking $20 a throw at 7:30 p.m., and getting no takers that I saw.

Geez, people down here are spending $20 just to talk to someone about paying much-higher cover charges.

Inside the arena, the Flyers beat the home team like a rented mule, 6-1. Late in the first period, the public-address announcer told the crowd that former Secretary of State Condolezza Rice was in the building, and they showed her on the video screens above the ice.

Some people cheered. It sounded like more folks booed. Either that, or they booed louder than the cheerers cheered. It wasn’t like they really, really booed her. But it was still sort of uncomfortable to witness.

In the grand tradition of public figures, Rice had a big smile and acted as if everyone was applauding.

I don’t know how Snoop Dogg’s Bud Bowl went. I’ll bet he didn’t get booed, though. Except from the scalpers.

By the way, Condi is a candidate to become the next Pacific-10 Conference commissioner. Wonder how that would go over with the people of, say, Berkeley and Eugene?

More on that: http://www.thewizofodds.com/the_wiz_of_odds/2009/01/rice-a-candidate-for-pac10-job.html

Glenn Greenwald, www.salon.com

(updated below - Update II)

It seems fairly easy — even for those overtly hostile to the basic rules of logic and law — to see what conclusions are compelled by these clear premises:

Associated Press, April 11, 2008:

Bush administration officials from Vice President Dick Cheney on down signed off on using harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists after asking the Justice Department to endorse their legality, The Associated Press has learned.

The officials also took care to insulate President Bush from a series of meetings where CIA interrogation methods, including waterboarding, which simulates drowning, were discussed and ultimately approved. . . .

The meetings were held in the White House Situation Room in the years immediately following the Sept. 11 attacks. Attending the sessions were Cheney, then-Bush aides Attorney General John Ashcroft, Secretary of State Colin Powell, CIA Director George Tenet and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.

Agence France-Presse, October 15, 2008:

The administration of US President George W. Bush authorized the CIA to waterboard Al-Qaeda suspects according to two secret memos issued in 2003 and 2004, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Soon-to-be U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, 1/15/2009:

President-elect Barack Obama’s nominee for attorney general said unequivocally Thursday that waterboarding is torture . . .

Early on he was asked whether waterboarding, a technique that makes a prisoner believe he is in danger of drowning, constitutes torture and is illegal.

“If you look at the history of the use of that technique, ” Holder replied, “we prosecuted our own soldiers for using it in Vietnam. . . . Waterboarding is torture.”

Bush official Susan Crawford, 1/13/2009:

The top Bush administration official in charge of deciding whether to bring Guantanamo Bay detainees to trial has concluded that the U.S. military tortured a Saudi national who allegedly planned to participate in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, interrogating him with techniques that included sustained isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity and prolonged exposure to cold, leaving him in a “life-threatening condition.”

“We tortured [Mohammed al-] Qahtani,” said Susan J. Crawford, in her first interview since being named convening authority of military commissions by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in February 2007. “His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that’s why I did not refer the case” for prosecution.”

3. An order from a superior officer or a public authority may not be invoked as a justification of torture. . . .

Article 4

1. Each State Party shall ensure that all acts of torture are offences under its criminal law. The same shall apply to an attempt to commit torture and to an act by any person which constitutes complicity or participation in torture.

Article 7

1.
Article 15

Each State Party shall ensure that any statement which is established to have been made as a result of torture shall not be invoked as evidence in any proceedings, except against a person accused of torture as evidence that the statement was made.

The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention. It marks a significant step in the development during this century of international measures against torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment. Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.

U.S. Constitution, Article VI:

This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.

Soon-to-be Attorney General Eric Holder, 1/15/2009 (repeatedly):

“No one is above the law.”

These premises — conclusively established by undisputed news reports and the statements of the person about to become the country’s top law enforcement officer as well as a top Bush official – are clear, and the conclusions they compel are inescapable. The Bush administration authorized, ordered and practiced torture. The U.S., under Ronald Reagan, legally obligated itself to investigate and prosecute any acts of torture committed by Americans (which includes authorization of torture by high level officials and also includes, under Article 3 of the Convention, acts of “rendering” detainees to countries likely to torture, as the Bush administration unquestionably did).

All of the standard excuses being offered by Bush apologists and our political class (a virtual redundancy) – namely: our leaders meant well; we were facing a dangerous enemy; government lawyers said this could be done; Congress immunized the torturers; it would be too divisive to prosecute — are explicitly barred by this treaty (i.e., binding law) as a ground for refusing to investigate and prosecute acts of torture.

This is also why the standard argument now being offered by Bush apologists (such as University of Chicago Law Professor Eric Posner, echoing his dad, Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner in Chicago) as to why prosecutions are unnecessary — namely: there is “prosecutorial discretion” that should take political factors into account in order not to prosecute — are both frivolous and lawless. The Convention explicitly bars any such “discretion”: ”The State Party in territory under whose jurisdiction a person alleged to have committed any offence referred to in article 4 is found, shall . . . submit the case to its competent authorities for the purpose of prosecution.” The principal purpose of the Convention is to remove the discretion involved in prosecuting acts of torture and to bar the very excuses which every torturing society proffers and which our own torturing society is now attempting to invoke (“we were dealing with real threats; there were ‘exceptional circumstances’ that justified it; we enacted laws legalizing the torture; our leaders meant well; we need to move on”).

International treaties which the U.S. signs and ratifies aren’t cute little left-wing platitudes for tying the hands of America. They’re binding law according to the explicit mandates of Article VI of our Constitution. Thus, there simply is no way to (a) argue against investigations and prosecutions for Bush officials and simultaneously (b) claim with a straight face to believe in the rule of law, that no one is above the law, and that the U.S. should adhere to the same rules and values it attempts to impose on the rest of the world. Last week, Paul Krugman stated about as clearly as possible why this is so:

I’m sorry, but if we don’t have an inquest into what happened during the Bush years — and nearly everyone has taken Mr. Obama’s remarks to mean that we won’t — this means that those who hold power are indeed above the law because they don’t face any consequences if they abuse their power.

It’s just as simple as that. Once Eric Holder stated unequivocally that waterboarding is torture, and once a top Bush official used the word “torture” to describe what the U.S. did at Guantanamo using authorized techniques other than waterboarding, the “discretion” to investigate and prosecute disappeared– at least for people who believe in the most basic precepts of the rule of law and equality under it, Western principles of justice established at Nuremberg, and the notion that the U.S. is bound by the treaties it signs. There simply is no way to argue against investigations and prosecutions (and no way to argue that we should use torture-obtained evidence against Guantanamo detainees) without fully rejecting all of those principles.

While many Americans, especially American political elites, may be eager to overlook the implications of immunizing Bush officials for these crimes (as citizens typically are eager to avoid having their leaders branded as torturers and war criminals), it’s rather difficult to understand how people think that we’re going to “send a message to the world” about the restoration of American values as we deliberately protect the people who have systematically tortured and thereby transparently violate the core provisions of this Convention. Doesn’t that conduct rather clearly send the exact opposite message?

UPDATE: Citing the Convention, Hilzoy (a/k/a Johns Hopkins Professor Hilary Bok) wrote:

It seems to me that these facts imply that if Barack Obama, or his administration, believe that there are reasonable grounds to believe that members of the Bush administration have committed torture, then they are legally obligated to investigate; and that if that investigation shows that acts of torture were committed, to submit those cases for prosecution, if the officials who committed or sanctioned those acts are found on US territory. If they are on the territory of some other party to the Convention, then it has that obligation. Under the Convention, as I read it, this is not discretionary. And under the Constitution, obeying the laws, which include treaties, is not discretionary either.

It’s just not possible to argue with that. In light of Holder’s testimony, the “if” component of Hilzoy’s argument — “if Barack Obama, or his administration believe that there are reasonable grounds to believe that members of the Bush administration have committed torture . . . .” — is now a certainty. In Slate, Dahlia Lithwick and Phillipe Sands made a similar argument regarding Bush official Susan Crawford’s statement that the U.S. “tortured” Mohammed al-Qahtani: ”These states [who are parties to the Convention] must take any person alleged to have committed torture (or been complicit or participated in an act of torture) who is present in their territories into custody. The convention allows no exceptions.”

While those who argue that the U.S. was right to torture because it’s the U.S. that did it are expressing a repugnant form of exceptionalism, at least they’re being honest — far more so than those who argue that Bush officials shouldn’t be investigated or prosecuted while paying deceitful lip service to “the rule of law” and the idea that “no one is above the law.”

UPDATE II: Several commenters note, correctly, that the U.S. Senate, in 1994, ratified the Convention by specifying that its provisions were not self-executing, but instead, required specific legislation implementing its provisions. As this 2004 Report from the Congressional Research Service (.pdf) details (beginning at page CRS-4), Congress enacted legislation to do exactly that, with minor reservations not relevant to the argument here.

This piece of news can give us an idea of what happened in the last 8 years, now that George Bush is

This piece of news can give us an idea of what happened in the last 8 years, now that George Bush is leaving, nobody gives a dam about him, and Ehut Olmert , Israel prime minister surely doesn’t give either.

In his last speech, he said that was a phone call from him that lead the USA president to order Condolezza Rice to vote null in a resolution that demanded the cease fire in Gaza.

Incredible? Yes, in the very least! Olmert said he demanded to talk to Bush ten minutes before the vote take place on the UN. Olmert said “when we saw that the secretary of state, for reasons we cannot understand, wanted to vote inn favour of the resolution, I tried to reach president Bush and they told he was in Philadelphia making a speech – I said to them – I don’t care, I need to talk to him now!”

“They took him out of the stage to another room and I talked to him” continues Olmert describing this surreal story. “I said to him: You cannot vote in favour of this resolution!, which he answered: lesson, I don’t know nothing about it, I’m not familiarized with the way the resolution is written” – Olmert replied that he was quite familiarized with the resolution and that the USA could not vote in favour – and they didn’t.

Bush ordered Condolezza Rice to vote null in a resolution that she helped to write, organized in favour and was lobbying to be approved.

This is an example of the way USA diplomacy has been acting around. This story was very funny, if it were not a war we are talking about. How came Israel prime minister give orders like this is such a sensible question? Amazing, really. Don’t bother saying goodbye to Bush, he has gone a long time ago from the white house…
