<p>When the company conference or group meeting invite pings into the inbox, what’s the most likely reaction?</p>
<p>Delight?  Scepticism? A previously uniimportant appointment which may just take precedence?</p>
<p>Today some thirty years after the comedian Bob Monkhouse and his cronies set up the first UK show biz conference business the call of the company event is still met with a range of reactions– and more importantly, success. Why?<!--more--></p>
<p>Often the format is too predictable. People know what to expect – and it isn’t just about the lunch, the room or the early start, although these too are just as important in providing a quality experience.</p>
<p>Presentation planning (or the lack of it) is an area where the greatest strides can pay off. So what are our top tips to raise your conference game?</p>
<p>First off, think beyond the pure conveyance of information. Laudable though it is to communicate and explain the why, when and how, the chances of your audience remembering and putting detail into action is not going to be in proportion to your efforts until you create an emotional attachment along the way..</p>
<p>Look at Danny Boyle’s extravaganza of the Olympic opening ceremony. Think about the best celebrity speakers you’ve ever seen. Consider what a great story they all told, consider how you read to your kids – they’re the pinnacle of audience engagement and feedback.</p>
<p>So how do you create this emotional connection?</p>
<ol>
<li>Use a strong and relevant theme to give focus and create analogies and impact for those all-important first impressions</li>
<li>Think differently about your presentation style. Be more than a speaker imparting information. Instead be a leader with a story to tell which you want people to remember and act on because it is so important.</li>
<li>As you plan your story consider the different people in the audience. Some of them may think visually, while others may make a connection with words or phrases. Build that into what you say and do so that everyone is a absorbed with the subject.</li>
<li>Be inspired &#8211; look at examples like TED.com/talks for riveting talks by remarkable people.</li>
<li>If there’s an elephant in the room, deal with it in a creative way and by taking the lead so there’s no whiff of the animal to distract the group from the real business of the day.</li>
<li>Speak to everyone in that room.  Build a rapport with the different types of people that you have by recounting a great anecdote or sharing a secret.</li>
<li>Create light and shade in your presentation – think of it like a piece of music, with an engaging introduction, catchy middle sequence and a fantastic or surprising conclusion, not a monologue or pace less creation.</li>
<li>Add something unexpected – like an interactive, game or spot prize.</li>
<li>Keep your visual presentations simple – visual, and clear. Design your Keynote or PowerPoint slides clearly so everyone can see and understand the points they support – and don’t use text under 14pt or put content on the bottom of the slide for heads get in the way. Use Slideshare for inspiration and sites like Shutterstock for inexpensive and attention getting visuals.</li>
<li>Most of all, give yourself a break and enjoy the experience – because you’re confident all your planning will pay off.</li>
</ol>
<p>With the right planning and a good story you’ll be uplifted, your audience will be uplifted and will respect and bask in your success. After all, as the artist Francis Bacon observed  “a good life is a mix of joyful meetings and joyful moments.”</p>
