Well, I haven’t made a new post on my blog in a long, long, time…. I apologize to all my viewers (all three of you). I really don’t have an excuse except for laziness and apathy, and those aren’t very good ones. However, I pledge to start blogging again! I will! I really will!

Its been about a month since my last class of the fall semester. And since then I have had quite a fun break. I’ve been doing a bunch of stuff to keep me busy. Before leaving Chicago in December, I tried to finish up a paintball DVD that I was working on, but failed at that. So I left to go live with my parents for 3 weeks and figured that I would finish it there by the end of the week. However, the world had better plans for me… My Macbook Pro decided to flip me the bird by letting its graphics card and mother board die. At that point I realized that I was not going to be able to get my project done by the New Years. But in a way, this allowed me more time to spend with my mom who has a bum foot….

…I’m sorry. Should I have given some warning before showing this picture? I probably should have… oh well. Anyways, my mom had to get the bones in her feet fused back together from arthritis. She isn’t allowed to walk on it for a couple months and therefore has to use a knee walker or wheel chair. So during my weeks off I helped her out here and there. We also went out and saw a bunch of movies. But don’t worry, her foot had a cast on it by then so nobody had to look at that beast.

Over the break I also had a pleasant time celebrating Hanukkah with the family. Ironically enough, as a Hanukkah present, I had gotten a new battery for my Macbook Pro that had just died. But thank HaShem that I have parents who are kind and monetarily blessed enough to get me a new notebook.

Below is a picture of my first neice, Emma. It was amazing to see how much she had grown since the last time I saw her. I’m thankful that I was able to spend time with family and friends over the holidays.

After Hanukkah, I went straight into paintball mode. I was hosting a scenario paintball game on New Years Eve and had little time to do last minute preparations because of my little laptop mishap. However, everything turned out great as far as how the game was ran. But, unfortunately we barely had anyone come. We had 9 guys show up. So it was a fairly tiny game, but we all had fun playing paintball in the cold.

After the New Years, I spent two nights playing and beating two PS3 games with my good ol friend Matt Dedert. Oh, nothing compares to playing and beating a video game in course of one night. We played Army of Two and Conflict: Denied Ops. Army of Two rocked, but Denied Ops kinda fell short. But overall, it was still fun. I rarely ever play video games now adays so it’s nice to have the ability every once and a while to sit around and to do just that.

Now I’m back in Chicago and have been sitting on my ass doing nothing but catching up on TV shows and working on paintball editing projects. I have one week left till my January Session class starts (The Machine Room, yipeee!), so I’m trying to get in as much “me” time as possible. As a matter of fact I need to go… 24 is starting in a hour …and SAG, I love you, but please don’t deny me anymore Jack Bauer. I have been waiting for a year and a half for season 7 and I can’t wait any longer.

Peace.

Venezuela is left in a state of civil war after the government was brutally overthrown by a military coup. With factions fighting to reinstate democracy, the U.S. government has offered their assistance, though the new government regime has threatened to deploy nuclear weapons if the U.S. meddles in Venezuelan affairs. The threat needs to be neutralized, and the U.S can’t risk nuclear war.

The CIA Special Activities Division operates in isolation and secrecy. If captured, any link with the U.S. Government will be denied.

Conflict: Denied Ops is a highly accessible co-op FPS featuring massive, extremely explosive firefights across destructible environments.
Conflict: Denied Ops is the fifth instalment in the enjoyable Conflict series. Available on the Xbox

Conflict: Denied Ops is the fifth instalment in the enjoyable Conflict series. Available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC (reviewed here), Pivotal Games’ two player co-op FPS (first-person shooter) doesn’t break any new ground, but it is a blast.

The game (£17.93/$36.99) is set in today’s volatile political climate and focuses on two stereotyped agents from the CIA’s Special Activities Division (SAD) – one’s a whipper snapper and the other a grizzly cynic. They’re both experts in weapons and military tactics, which definitely helps. Reggie Lang is a machine gun operator who uses an M249 PARA with an undermounted M203 grenade launcher, and Lincoln Graves is a former Marine and sniper who uses an SR-25 with an undermounted M26 MASS. As you can image, there’s often a clash in personalities which leads to many amusing quips.

The game is played in a first person perspective, unlike the third person viewpoint of the four preceding titles, and is also the first game in the Conflict series which does not feature four main characters. In single player mode you can switch between controlling each agent. In co-op, each player controls one agent. The agents only use their weapon of choice, and cannot pick up enemy weapons. Ammunition for firearms is unlimited, but explosives are not and must be replenished at resupply boxes found throughout the levels you play your levels in Africa, Siberia and South America.

Their (your) mission is to prevent a third-world dictatorship from gaining nuclear weapons; a mission which takes you across three continents and pits you against the scumbags who control the nuclear arms smuggling trade. The crux of the game, however, is the ability to switch seamlessly, at any point, between these two operatives to lay down covering fire, explore diverging paths through the levels, create distractions and pin the enemy under fire. Besides offering two types of gameplay (stealth and assault), swapping between characters is essential in most levels in order to progress. The way you switch characters is pretty cool too, with the camera following the trail back/forward to the other player – a neat touch.

Making full use of Pivotal’s Puncture Technology, Conflict: Denied Ops features a highly destructible environment, allowing you to shoot through walls to create sniping holes or blast through crates and boxes to take the enemy by surprise. There are plenty of highly explosive structures and gas canisters to destroy too, and there’s nothing more gratifying than taking out a wave of advancing forces with a single shot. As an added bonus the explosions are loud and can be outrageously huge, which totally doesn’t go unappreciated.

Conflict: Denied Ops is a simple and enjoyable shooter for the casual gamer. Gameplay is rudimentary and fans of Army of Two and Rainbow Six Vegas will laugh at the co-op, but if you grab it for a bargain and don’t take it too seriously, it could be a great fix for a wet weekend. The sound effects are loud and the music is fully interactive (reacting to your movements), but the graphics and physics are dated compared to the likes of COD 4 and Gears of War. But if you’re not bothered about unoriginal and generic gameplay, there’s no reason not to enjoy Conflict: Denied Ops. [6.5]

It’s been patiently waiting in the wings like it’s the secret third Minogue sister - here’s a review of Conflict: Denied Ops.

Format: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Pivotal Games
Publisher: Eidos Interactive
RRP: £49.99
Release Date: February 8 2008

NB: Online not reviewed

There are video games that are brave, ambitious and exciting. There are games that take existing formulas and reinvent them and throw familiar concepts into unfamiliar ground. There are games that make us think and play in ways we had not thought possible. From its underwhelming opening through to its equally underwhelming end, Conflict: Denied Ops vehemently and repeatedly lets you know that it’s not one of these games.

What is there to say? It’s a typical dual-stick first-person shooter, but manages to make its controls overly frustrating with low, fixed sensitivity and misplaced button assignment. You control two muscly soldiers, CIA operatives with attitude, assigned to allegedly high-importance missions. One’s black, loud and noisy, the other is white, old and surly. They don’t get on. Sounds familiar, right? Both swear, a lot, but any maturity of dialogue is blighted by kindergarten writing. The story takes you all over the world, from Africa to Siberia, but the locations are forgettable thanks to the by-the-books plotline.

Graphically, Denied Ops is barely next-gen, and struggles to reach an acceptable number of frames per second. There are elements of nice shadowing, reasonable levels of detail, but that’s from a distance. Get up close and personal to the characters and environment and it’s genuinely atrocious. Animations in particular are stuttery and unimpressive affairs, especially the many laughably poor helicopter crashes (more on that later).

That would actually all be forgivable if the gameplay was anything to write home about, but it’s not. I’ve already mentioned its handling, but I didn’t mention how it’s (poorly) copied from Call of Duty 4. The damage mechanics are also borrowed from CoD4 (heart-beating, greying of the screen with reddened edges), but healing takes too long, ensuring that you will die, and die often. Thanks to huge gaps between checkpoints and difficulty discerning where a shot’s coming from, this makes for pretty frustrating gaming.

Conflict: Denied Ops does try to do something different from COD4; unfortunately it’s something that Halo 3 and Army of Two do much better; co-op gameplay. Co-op is a definite misnomer, because the only co-operation you’ll be doing with your partner is shooting the enemy. There are no devices, puzzles or situations that require a partner, at all. Your AI partner is also infuriatingly difficult to order, but his AI far surpasses the hilarious and random run away! movement of the enemy. Even if you shoot at the speedy blighters, they’ll keep running until they’ve found a specific spot they’re happy with, or die before reaching it.

The one feature that might have shone through the darkness was weapon customisation; a sniping rifle can be customised to be interchangeable with a shotgun mode, or with a camera that allows you to shoot around walls, whilst a machine gun can become a makeshift grenade launcher. Unfortunately, this is as exciting the customisation gets, and subsequent upgrades do little more than improving power and aim.

And yet I’ve not even mentioned until now how explosive barrels always fly straight upwards upon being shot before exploding when hitting the ground, how half the missions end with you shooting down the same damn helicopter, how every mission involves the generic cycle of hit-and-run movement across a level, the unbearable loading times, and inability to find online matches. Sadly, quite frankly, I’ve already given Conflict: Denied Ops too much attention and time. When the last level’s time limit came up, I was thankful that the displayed amount was the maximum duration I had left before never touching it ever, ever again. If you like co-op FPSs, almost every other one is better. There are worse games out there, but at least they tried.

Rating: D-

It’s just that there are so many of them on the 360. This means that I’ve been there done that so many times that even Call of Duty 4 doesn’t seem that innovative. And Conflict: Denied Ops is no Call of Duty 4. Far from it. Still, it is very easy to compare all shooters to COD4 and dismiss any that aren’t as exciting or have the same production values.

So it becomes a case of “Why bother compete with COD4s” or “Let’s cash in on gamers’ love of the genre”. Well most publishers go with the latter, and Conflict is one of those titles. Still, it does redeem itself in some areas.

The Conflict games used to be about ‘squad’ and the change from third person to first person with this game has changed the emphasis from team to two. Yes, two of the most annoyingly unlikable protagonists since Kane & Lynch, with one constantly spouting on about his “black ass” and ending every sentence (or sentence fragment) with “bro”. “You gonna drive a bus bro?” Who is this guy trying to be? Tubbs?

Click any image to view full size:

Then you have the gung-ho swearing and army speak that has been one of my pet peeves for eons now; things like: “It’s not the blood on your hands, it’s the gravel in your guts”. Wow, with words of wisdom like that, I feel inspired….inspired to heave the contents of my stomach onto the carpet. So dialogue isn’t a strong part of the game….

Next you have the bane of all shooters, the lack of cohesive story…or any story at all. This one is about…a renegade South American General….and bombs and terrorists. Something like that…yadda yadda; I tuned out. So story isn’t a strong part of the game…

What about the production values of the game? Is it fun? A mixed bag really. Some of the graphics and sound is quite good, but some of it is horrible. For example, the main score is adequately thematic for a shooter but the guns just sound weak. There is a higher degree of destructible environment in this game than many shooters, which is great to see.

The variety of locations is quite good too and the vehicle sections add some variety, but the lighting is strange. On half the missions, like with the castle, it is so dark that you end up using those horrible night vision goggles these games insist on having, making you play the level with a green filter covering any graphical work they may have done. What a waste!

Then you have some levels, like the South American terrorist camp, that feel like you are staring into the sun and can actually give you a headache. Well it did to me. The blurring effects when you reload are equally nausea-inducing and one of those ‘why do that?’ aspects to the game.

The explosions look good and even though it is a bit old school to have exploding barrels and gas tanks everywhere clearly painted in red, they do provide some cool fireworks and blow up a few enemies you’d rather not spend the time shooting. Because if you play as the white ‘trailer-trash redneck’ sniper you’d rather not shoot. It takes three shots for each baddie, unless you get a head shot. Exactly three shots with the sniper gun, be it in the arm, the leg, the groin, or the chest. Equally strange are the theatrical ways enemies often fly through the air when killed.

The game is still linear, despite a few alternate ways of getting to some places, which is pretty standard for shooters. There isn’t really a rise in tempo as there are not many set pieces and those that do occur are cut scenes which pull you out of the game too much to build any tension. The save points are usually, though not always, at good points and the levels are a fairly good length without too much repetition of environment to stretch game time.

The main selling point of the game is that it has co-op. In single player you can take control of either character simply by pressing a button, much like the recent Jericho or the old Xbox game Burte Force. Each character has different weapons; you basically have a sniper/ shotgun character and a machine gun/ rocket launcher one. This is a great idea and allows you to change depeding on the circumstances, but isn’t as fun as playing with someone human.

The second player can even join in your next mission instead of a separate co-op game having to be started. I am a strong believer that shooters should have co-op in this gaming generation, and this game thankfully has offline co-op as well as the online co-op. It is immensely fun playing split-screen co-op with a partner in the same room and I commend Conflict for having the sense to not forget the non-Live players.

It also has offline multiplayer too as well as online, but the multiplayer is not the meat and bones of this game. Still, nice to see it has done what Halo and COD have and unlike Medal of Honor or Turok, kept split-screen. I don’t see a big following happening on Live for this game, so split-screen means that if you can’t find a game online you can still play it offline.

The problem with the co-op system here is that when you are playing alone, without your human assistant, the friendly AI is so dumb you have to tell him every few seconds to stay with you. Sure, the guy will cover you and shoot some of the enemy effectively when he’s with you, but if you forget to keep ordering him near he’ll stay way back and just sit there. You might as well be the one man army you are in so many other shooter games. Therefore, this game is best played with a friend, and then its value increases.

The controls are not nearly as tight as the COD series, but they are certainly not the worst I’ve played either. The lack of a fast running button caught me off guard as I’ve gotten used to that, but it still feels like you are wading through water sometimes.

Conflict: Denied Ops could have been more than the average shooter it is. In that sense it is a wasted opportunity because having co-op really did work in increasing the fun factor, but only when the second player was human. Diversity of locations, unusually destructive environments, and breaking up the game with integrated vehicle sections is marred by poor lighting choices, dumb AI, horrid protagonists, weak clichéd storyline, and feeble-sounding weapons. This is a game that seems to be pitched at shooter fans needing another quick fix, and so never aimed high, which is a shame.
