Bastante divertido este vídeo do site AnimaTunes, que é uma paródia da música “Bomba” (versão ‘Braga Boys’), para relembrar o famoso Conga, um calçado amado pelos pais com orçamento curto, sobretudo nos anos 70, e normalmente odiado pelos filhos. Além de refrescar a memória dos mais saudosos, o vídeo, se bem analisado, nos ajuda a resgatar temas como economia, consumo e moda, entre outros fatores. O país mudou, o Conga também, mas vale relembrar:

Some thoughts the song “Spill The Wine” by Eric Burdon and War, featured on the album Eric Burdon Declares “War,” which came out the same year as their other collaborative album, The Black-Man’s Burdon.

When I was a kid, this song only seemed to come on when I was deep in the throes of night, or sleep, or perhaps madness.

Some “interesting” facts about “Spill The Wine” via songfacts:

• This song features a harmonica, flute, and conga drums.

• This is widely believed to be about, or at least heavily influenced by drugs. According to Brown, this song celebrates women: “All ladies are beautiful. You’ve got to look at them. God, I believe, put all of us here and made us all different so we could be like the flowers, you know. Like women. I look at them as beautiful flowers. Even when they get older, the flowers and so on, and that’s what it really boils down to, they can be skinny, big, fat, I’ve seen some fine voluptuous women. And then I’ve seen some that are skinny, and if you look at them, they could be beautiful, depending on personality and stuff.”

• Jimi Hendrix‘ former girlfriend sang backup. Hendrix was managed by Animal’s bass player Chas Chandler.

• The lady speaking Spanish in the background was Eric Burdon’s girlfriend. Says Brown: “We went back there and we put up a little tent, candlelight, and some wine back there. They were behind there, and Eric was doing things to her and making her talk.”

• This was used in the movie Boogie Nights as part of a pool party scene with the porn stars.

• The Isley Brothers covered this in 1971 on their album Givin’ It All Back.

As a kid, I had the radio on a lot. This was when the radio was better, mind you, and I kept it around like a secret lover or some kind of invisible friend. I’d cheat on it a lot with CDs and tapes and vinyl, a lot, but many a night I spent seized in a radio daze, or I’d listen to it while getting ready for school or for work or a dance or a date or something.

For most of high school it was the “alternative rock” station for me, but I did flirt a year there with the “alternative rock” station that was slightly harder, which basically meant that I had to put up with a lot of bullshit like “mandatory Metallica” and following up a band like Kittie or Jane’s Addiction with AC/DC. Rewinding the tape back to somewhere in my much younger years when I was a stupid little shit who’d read, daydream, ponder, fascinate, and shit along with the radio, you should probably know I kept floating back and forth between classic rock and Motown. Those were my bag back then.

Hence all of my old school music knowledge/anecdotes being about things like Keith Moon’s addiction to horse tranquilizers or waxing nostalgic about Berry Gordy’s sex habits.

The Who’s “Who Are You?” was about Keith’s tendency to pass on street corners during drug binges only to be discovered by police the next day who assumed he was dead.

Anyway. I remember the Animals’ “House Of The Rising Sun” and I knew War’s “Cisco Kid” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” The radio loved those songs. And then I heard this song one night, “Spill The Wine,” and it was late at night as my father were driving around, lost in the Hollywood hills, high above the world. It was a mash up by two artists I liked before I knew what a mash up. I was tired, my eyes were heavy, and this song started dictating images to me as I looked down at the world, and I would get lost in the idylls of walking through the set of a Hollywood movie that was packed with mountain kings and a harem of women and wine spilt all about. And I was easily swept away in the mystical and engimatic nature of the song, which everyone assumes the song refers to drugs, which it does in a way, but you have to remember that the prizely grown native drug of California will always be sex, and the song enthusiastically endorses going after that pearl as many times as you can get it. If I had actually known what a clitoris was back when I was a kid, well…

“When you are at the top of the mountain the sky is blue, the child is cured. That’s our goal for every one of our patients,” says Dr. Jerry Z. Finkelstein, MD Pediatric Oncologist at the end of the video included below.

On Sunday, August 23, the sky was indeed blue at the Four Corners in Eldred, thanks to the good weather, the sweet sounds of Simply Noted (who donated their time and musicality) and the generosity of the people who came out to celebrate in the hope of the end of childhood cancer. The day’s events were in support of St. Baldrick’s Foundation and sponsored by Lou Monteleone.

Monteleone is usually seen at the Eldred Preserve, where he has served as manager for over twenty years, but, on more than one occasion, he leaves the Preserve and heads out into an even more public venue. Whether he is helping the Santa Express get around town, or helping Mrs. Claus serve cookies at the Eldred Preserve, is making sure the Luck of the Irish is upheld in Yulan, or the Easter Bunny gets his eggs delivered on time, Monteleone always seems to be in the mix.

But, nowhere are his efforts as important as making sure a child with cancer and their family are supported and so he teams up with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise funds not just for awareness, but for research and for a cure.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation, according to their website, “…began as a casual conversation between friends and has exploded into the world’s biggest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer! In nine years, events have taken place in 18 countries and 48 US states; raising over $50 million.”

The Longest Line Dance and Conga Against Cancer raised approximately $1,000 with more donations coming in and being accepted through the month of September. T-shirts are still for sale ($10); as are paper doll cut-outs for $1.

Até os 14 anos eu morei na rua Ferreira de Araujo, em Pinheiros, uma região que hoje é super hype, cheia de bares, galpões de artistas e bazares de moda. Mas, naquela época não tinha nada disso, era só um bairro ao lado do Largo da Batata, o maior centro de macumba de São Paulo.
Morávamos num prédio de classe média baixa, apesar de minha mãe ser jornalista e meu pai ganhar uma puta grana como diretor de teatro. E, graças à filosofia “não temos o carro do ano, mas meus filhos fazem intercâmbio na Inglaterra”, estudei no Colégio Palmares junto com a prole da extrema-direita milionária paulistana e nunca fiz uma festa de aniversário porque morria de vergonha de trazer meus amigos em casa.
Apesar do broche de estrela do PT que eu só usava para irritar a idiota da diretora, sempre tive inveja das patricinhas que desfilavam com calças da Fórum, sapatos Sidewalk e camisetas Hard Rock Café Orlando. Tudo isso para dizer que a minha fascinação por roupas não veio com o tempo, mas nasceu comigo. Eu ficava indignada com os tops de lycra que o povão usava com as banhas saltando pra fora. Tudo bem que aqui no Brasil ninguém tem condições de seguir as últimas tendências de Paris, mas por que as pessoas não saem de casa de jeans e camiseta branca? Juro que era nisso que eu pensava quando ia para a escola de Conga porque o Bamba (que era um pouquinho melhor) também era mais caro.

It’s easy to approach a group of playing children and take their happiness for granted. It was in my second week at St. Timothy’s when the schools headmaster opened up about what the school really means to the children and the community. He told me, “these children are the happiest when they are in school and during their break they are just counting down the days until they can return and be well taken care of.”

Last week, the students finished their finals on Tuesday and had the rest of the week to play and celebrate while their teachers corrected their exams. Up until this point we had been occupied with community meetings about launching the new school and had not spent time with the children. Fortunately, the end of their exams happened to coincide with handing off the project to the community, which gave us time to hang out with the students.

To help the teachers out we decided to hold a field day where we did every relay race we could think of. The next day we taught the kids different songs and dances. I went way back into my head to remember every song that I learned at summer camp. We even taught them how to do the Macarena, which was a huge hit. By mistake while I was dancing I started a conga line (for the big kids)/ choo choo train (for the young ones) that took over the whole playground.

The last day before their break, we played every game under the sun until we were so exhausted and the kids settled down for story time where Lucia recounted the plots of Sleeping beauty, Aladdin and finally Lion King. They sat there mesmerized. You could have heard a pin drop.

St. Timothy’s school is a special place. By taking care of the most vulnerable children in the community it gives these children a chance to have a childhood. During their break they might be faced with the realities of their situations, some will have to go to work to help a sick parent care for their family. Some who were so dependent on the meals they got at school will go hungry. But after the break they will get to return to school and be kids again.

Many times I get so wrapped up in the work that I have to do during my field visits that I don’t get enough time to spend with the communities that Mama Hope supports. I am so happy that I had this opportunity to be reminded by the children how important it is to just laugh, dance, sing and play. It allowed me to remember why I started this organization in the first place.

-what’s your 1^st musical memory?

Singing and dancing to Miami Sound Machine’s “Conga.” I thought I was Gloria in my living room!

-what’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened while you are on stage?

I haven’t really done that many shows… I guess the craziest thing was our album release show! The energy was crazy! There was so much love in the room. It was a good crazy! 

-what’s your ultimate dream in music?

My musical intention on my site sums it up beautifully: to inspire adventure, creativity, and the inner artist- to give praise, to heal, to manifest love, to allow you to feel your own truth and power through my voice, to make music that evokes emotion, thought, mood, and passion, to connect with others on levels they didn’t even know existed within themselves, or simply to create something that you can shake your ass to…

-if you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?

I would be the next Oprah! Lol! Seriously I’d do the things I already do but in a grander way- dance, write poetry, inspire others to live their dreams…. 

-songs that changed your life…

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” it’s soulful AND conscious… Donny Hathaway’s version of “A Song for You…” Ella Fitzgerald singing live “Mack the Knife”-I’ve never heard another singer use her voice as an instrument the way she does… Oh there’s too many… 

-most influential artists to you and why?

Prince (his music is beyond sexy), Erykah Badu and Jill Scott-soulful/poetic/conscious writers and singers- I adore them!, Nina Simone/Billie Holiday/Ella- their unique interpretation of the lyric, their tone, their phrasing…. Bjork-she’s innovative, takes risks, she’s her own entity…Chaka Khan is fierce… Stevie Wonder-such an incredible song writer… I love Yerba Buena- how they fuse so many genres with Latin music. James Brown- I saw him live-puts on such incredibly electric performances, so funky. I could go on and on and on….

-what makes an amazing song?

A song that makes you feel deeply…

-what’s your theme song?

I wish it was Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” lol! But at the moment I’m more Gnarls Barkley “Crazy!” lol! I don’t know. It changes. You tell me! 

-do you have musical nickname?

Not a musical one, but my nickname is Bella.

-what song were you most likely conceived to?

My parents were into jazz… hmm… but then again I was conceived in the Caribbean… so…

-first concert you ever went to?

New Kids on the Block… but I’ve redeemed myself by going to incredible shows ever since I promise!!!

-first album u ever bought?

I would just borrow from my parents they had a great collection.. the first single I bought was TLC’s “Ain’t too Proud to Beg!”

-how can we revolutionize music? 

By creating music that is true to who we are. By exposing ourselves to music that is not just mainstream.

-indie or major (what’s the way to go?)

After interning at 2 major labels in college, I really don’t think that most labels do very much. They have the connections that CAN catapult an artist to stardom but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will. An artist can get their album shelved even if they are signed…or if the album is released they might not get the funding/attention/marketing to get it to the masses… I’d love to be free of all that… autonomous like Prince. He’s revolutionary as a music business man as well… But if I was offered an amazing deal I would be open to the possibilities…

-what inspires you musically?

Reading something inspiring, exposing myself to new things, having adventures, my community of amazing musicians, artists with something unique to express, love, passion, dancing, altered states (occasionally), spirit, growth…

-what can an artist do (that you’re backing) to make your job easy and fun?

Well I’ve done backing vocals… and usually back ground singers are the least respected in the band it seems. So just showing respect. As a singer- don’t be afraid to let your back ground singers shine and be who they are – there’s enough room for everyone. I’ve been lucky with the performers I’ve worked with. 

-what’s your favorite song from the album?

“Moments” or “Te Necesito” are probably my favorites. They are poetic and intimate and sensual. I love what “Variety Pack” is about- it’s a sexy female empowerment song! “Discombobulator” is so out and funky…. and I love the vibe of “Overflow.” But for some reason my bond is strongest with “Moments” and “Te Necesito.”

-advice for up and coming players?

Be fearless! Be humble! Give love in all you do!

-what do you hope for the show?

I wanted to elevate the room with LOVE and inspiration! And we succeeded! It was a beautiful first show!!!
