Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt, erst eins, dann zwei…….

Heute ist der erste Adventsonntag und am Dienstag der 1. Dezember, was bedeutet, dass ich das erste Türchen von meinen Conrad-Adventkalender öffnen darf. Das verspricht laut Angaben von Conrad einiges:

Bin ja schon mal gespannt, ob wirklich keine Vorkenntnisse erforderlich sind…. Immerhin ist dem guten Stück eine 12 Seiten lange Bedienungsanleitung beigepackt. Nach dem Vorwort, in dem sogar erklärt wird wie die Türchen geöffnet werden, findet man für jeden Tag eine Bauanleitung samt Skizze(n).  Näher werde ich mir die Anleitung nun nicht ansehen, ich will mir euch ja nicht die Vorfreude nehmen und jetzt schon verraten, was hinter den Türchen steckt!

Today I am thankful …

that I didn’t go out into the madness!  I am also thankful that we have had two nice days in a row of visiting family.

Yesterday, we had dinner with dh’s father and stepmother.  Smom and I each made complete meals.  She cooked the turkey, made sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes (dairy filled), rolls (glutenous), corn, and pecan pie (glutenous and eggy).  I roasted a pork loin, dh made mashed potatoes (dairy free), the Little Guy helped me make Mexican Bean Salsa Salad (free of gluten, birds and their byproducts, milk, soy, and canola and rapeseed oils), and GFCFEFSF pumpkin pie (for the flour, I used extra virgin olive oil instead of light olive oil – not sure what the difference is, sorghum flour instead of buckwheat flour , and Thai Kitchen’s full fatted coconut milk instead of hemp milk, which I had never heard of until this recipe).

The pork turned out okay, the mashed potatoes not so good, the MBSS turned out nice except that I forgot to buy cilantro , which was sorely missed, and the pumpkin pie was great!

If you followed the link, you probably saw that the pie was made without a crust.  It was easy to get out of the pie plate and tasted very good considering it is full of substitutes to make it pumpkin pie like.  It actually tasted like pumpkin, wasn’t sludgy, and didn’t look like something I probably didn’t want to eat.  I will add more spices to it next time – and there will be a next time – because it seemed like maybe it could’ve used a little something more, flavor wise, but not much.

I’ve recently made a discovery that makes me feel a little sad.  It seems that my husband is losing or has lost the ability to taste simple things.    I’ve been doing a lot of cooking over the past couple of weeks, and have not been able to please him without really dumping in the salt and spices. The boys and I have have really liked a few of the things, but he doesn’t and asks if I have considered adding some salt or pepper or other spices.   WITW???  The Little Guy, Mr. Somewhat Picky, was raving over a bowl of steaming hot vegetable beef soup, while The Mister thought it tasted like veggies, beef and water, which I can assure you it was not, and yet how sad that he doesn’t seem to be able to taste the natural flavors of the vegetables!

My stomach has been really bothering me for the last few days, and I think it’s because I have added so much extra pepper and other spices so that he can taste something.  In the future, I will make a separate concoction for him so the rest of us don’t have to suffer from burnt innards.  In the meantime, I’ve got to search for answers about taste bud health.  8-|

Today, we had dinner with my sister’s family, but this time, we weren’t the only people dealing with food sensitivities.  My Mom has discovered that she is at least gluten intolerant, so we worked out the menu so that it would be as everybody friendly as possible.  Still, certain staples were required which some of us simply had to avoid.  There was turkey, pork, fresh veggies and dip, pickles, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, fruit salad, MBSS, two kinds of pumpkin pie (one GFCFEFSF), one me-friendly blueberry pie, one pecan pie, and one spectacular fruit crisp dessert that I wung which turned out, well, spectacular!  I’ll have to make it again and write down what I did, but the two main flavors are pumpkin and apple, and it was delicious!

We did not lack for food, and I am thankful to God for providing so much variety in nature so that those of us with a lengthy “Stuff to Avoid” list can enjoy tasty food, too! 

I am also thankful to have had the opportunity to spend time with my family.  I haven’t seen my in-laws or my side of the family much at all lately, so it was nice to slow down and have some time with them.  You know, as much as God has shown himself faithful lately, I still worried about a couple of things and cast a shadow over some of the festivities.  I feel bad that I didn’t let the things go and spend more time concentrating on how I could be a blessing to them.  Both sides of our family are having their own difficulties. We had a good time both days, really, we did, but I could cry over one of the things I wish I could’ve done, but God knows about that situation, and thinking it over, I know that He would’ve impressed a thing upon my heart if He had wanted me to do something about it.  I guess I can take comfort in that.  I shall take comfort in that.

I don’t mean to end on a downer.  Difficult things happen, but God is still faithful, and I don’t mean to whine away every bit of thanks I’ve expressed. It has been a pleasant week, and I am thankful for it and all that it brought our way.  And I am especially thankful that I did not join in the shopping madness!

i have a friend called Roy (or Conrad Roy)

he is one of the new students who was in our church enGAGE this year and is now part of our leadership team for next year

i really like Roy, for a number of reasons:

he says ‘awesome’ a lot. now i don’t like it when people say ‘awesome’ a lot because i personally have reserved the word ‘awesome’ for God cos it seems a travesty when you say ‘God is awesome’ and then ‘that ice-cream is aswesome’ or ‘that hockey goal you scored last night, brett, was awesome’- it’s like you’re comparing God with an ice-cream – so for me i reserve the word ‘awesome’ for God. Roy uses it ALL the time and so it should really annoy me, but it doesn’t. because he is generally just so excited about life and everything in life that i think ‘awesome’ is his way of getting it out. and so his using the word ‘awesome’ is an expression of his zest for life and i LOVE his zest for life.

not only does Roy operate on a ‘glass half full’ way of thinking about his own life, but he will see his glass as full and overflowing and will look across and see your glass (which is smashed and lying on the floor) as half full and then offer you his. Roy has come and helped out my VOB hockey team a few times and is an amazing athlete (possible pole vault contender for next Olympicals) and i am not as good although have probly been playing the hockey of my life this last year and Roy has just been such a huge encouragement on and off the field and really helped me with my self-belief which in turn has helped me play better. in fact he set up my first of two goals i scored this season and was super stoked for me when i samessed him last nite about my second goal.

he is super animated when telling stories, especially bible stories which he starts acting out even without realising i think and is really fun to watch – again just his passion for the moment.

and he is super deep – still young and still a bit loud and can be distractive at times, BUT when he goes into the zone and starts speaking about deep stuff he has been thinking about in terms of life or God or church or sports for summer camp (which he is running – so amped to hang with him!) then he really is a deep thinker and you can see the quality of his realness.

so that’s why i like Roy (or rooi) – red spirited and highly contagious – and a definite leader in the future. And very privileged right now to get to call him my friend…

Never before has a number been so important to the marketing world.  That number is the number five.  Now, how many of you just started humming the $5.00 footlong jingle from Subway?  The reason why I believe the number five is so important to the marketing and retail world is not the Subway footlong promotion itself, but how it came to be. 

According to an article in the November 10^th BusinessWeek magazine by Matthew Boyle, it came from a Subway franchise owner in Miami, Stuart Frankel.  According to the article Mr. Frankel owned a couple of Subway stores and was unhappy with his weekend business.  He started a $5.00 footlong promotion to help sales, as he put it, he likes round numbers.  His business doubled and soon he was dealing with lines out the door.  His idea caught on in Florida and grabbed the attention of Subway corporate.  A national campaign was rolled out and Subway sales have not looked back since. 

With Subways success you now see about every restaurant trying to copy it, form KFC $5.00 box, to special $5.00 sandwiches at Friday’s or about anywhere else you look.  What makes this story so special is where this idea came from.  It came from a business owner who instead of blaming the economy, or his location, or his franchise, or the community as to why his business was off, he simply did something about it.  He understood that even though there may be fewer people going out to eat, people were still going out to eat and he needed them to come to his location.  He gave them a reason and he marketed to them.  In today’s economy it’s easy to feel like the victim and place blame for slow growth.  The question is what are you doing about it?  Why on earth would you cut back on your marketing and allow your competitor to win over your client.  Instead, focus on your message and how you deliver it. 

As you look at your advertising budget for upcoming year, ask yourself, I’m I Stuart Frankel, or am I all those that blame everyone else and then forced to try and copy Stuart Frankel.  When it comes to putting together an advertising budget to much focus is placed on the amount and where it will be spent and not enough time on what message you will be sending.  Now more than ever it is important to keep you’re marketing and budget flexible.

Reynolds: Career more important to Lincoln than Arkansans

Lincoln’s Next ‘Pay-Back’ Vote

CONWAY – Republican United States Senate candidate Col. Conrad Reynolds (U.S. Army, Ret.) today called on Sen. Blanche Lincoln to hear the voice of Arkansans and vote against the motion to proceed on Sen. Harry Reid’s health care bill on Saturday:

“Saturday’s vote is another opportunity for Sen. Lincoln to pay back her liberal leaders in Washington for her committee chairmanship and the attack ads of the DSCC. According to NBC this morning, she has already told Sen. Reid how she will vote, and he is proceeding toward Saturday. Why has she not told us? With kids answering to names like Riley and Madison, it might be hard to see why Cohen courts controversy.

Except.

As Nameberry’s Pamela Redmond Satran wrote in her Daily Beast article last May, Cohen isn’t just any surname.  It’s from the Hebrew kohen – priest.  That’s more than an etymology.  The Kohanim are considered direct descendants of Aaron, big brother to Moses and first High Priest of the Israelites.  For generations, the Kohanim performed specific duties and formed  a priestly class within Judaism.  Even today, you’ll find communities where the Kohanim observe specific rules and receive certain privileges in return.  Lest you think that’s just an old tradition, it turns out that genetic testing bears out the idea that the Kohanim share a common ancestry.

Not every Kohanim is a Cohen and not every Cohen is a priest.  Names like Kaplan, Conklin, Kahn, Coen, Kogan, Cahen and Caen have all been used as equivalents.  George M. Cohan was Irish Catholic.  Koen is a diminutive for the Dutch and German equivalents of Conrad.  It’s perfectly possible to argue that your boy Cohen has nuthin’ to do with the Torah.

Plenty of parents do.  In 2004, Cohen entered the US Top 1000 at #650.  By 2008, he stood at #356 – a quick climb.  (Though even at #356, fewer than 1,000 newborns received the name.)  Koen ranked #877 is 2008.

If you’re flipping through the phone book to find a baby name, Cohen seems like a logical companion to Carter, Carson and Cooper, as well as names like Colton and Cody.  And, of course, all of those names and more are sometimes subject to respelling with a K.  (I’m guessing that very few of the 238 Koens born last year are wearing the name as a nod to their German or Dutch heritage.)

Factor in our continued preference for two-syllable, ends-in-n names for boys, and Cohen was almost sure to surface.  The Cohen family – including Adam Brody’s appealing character Seth Cohen – on TV’s The O.C. fueled his rise.

To complicate matters, plenty of popular choices are heavy with religious symbolism.  Keeping company with Cohen in the US Top 1000 are:

• Nevaeh (#34) and Heaven (#275), both for girls;
• Trinity (#70 for girls), Genesis (#95 for girls) and Messiah (#704) for boys;
• Zion (#699 for girls and #233 for boys).

That’s without considering virtue names, saints’ names and names culled from obscure Biblical figures.  You could argue that calling your kid Messiah is a heavier burden than the possibly-priestly Cohen.

But why bother?  If Cohen appeals, surely you could choose Colton or Nico or Colby or Kohl.  (I’m a big fan of Crosby myself.)

Odds are that parents picking Cohen mean no disrespect by choosing the name.  Some probably like the idea that their son’s name carries a religious connotation.

Assuming you’re reading this before signing Cohen on your child’s birth certificate in permanent marker, think twice.  It seems unfair to your child to saddle him with a name that – rightly or not – will be viewed by some as an insult.

A visszacsatolt audion egyik nagy hátránya, hogy ha nincs előtte egy nagyfrekvenciás előfokozat, akkor a gerjedésig fokozott visszacsatolás a vett állomás frekvenciájával adni is fog az antennán keresztül! Ezt azért is fontos megemlíteni, mert a CW (távíró) és SSB (egyoldalsávos) vételhez bizony gerjedésbe kell vinni az audiont, hogy az információt a hangszóróban visszanyerjük. Miért?! A CW módban dolgozó adó a morzejelek ütemében csak modulálatlan vivőt sugároz, ezért a vett állomás vivőjéhez hozzá kell keveredjen a gerjedő audion saját oszcillációjának terméke is, hogy a keverési termékből hallható morzejelek szóljanak a hangszóróban. Az SSB-nél pedig a küldött hanginformáció van az elnyomott vivőre ültetve, ráadásul csak az egyik, vagy az alsó (LSB) vagy a felső (USB) oldalsávra (10MHz alatt az LSB van inkább használva), ezért ott a hiányzó vivőt kell helyi rezgéssel pótolni, hogy a keverési termékből a hanginformáció megjelenjen.

SSB (LSB) adás vétele 80m-en

Távíró (CW) adás vétele 80m-en

Ezt a műszaki részletet azért fontos tudni, mert ha ilyen adást veszünk, akkor a közelünkben lakó rádióamatőrök esetleg kevésbé fogják örömmel konstatálni hullámvadászatunkat és kísérletezéseinket, mivel magunk is adóvá válunk vétel közben! Ezért mindenképpen járjunk el körültekintően, ha QSO-kra vadászunk az éterben vele!

A fentiek azért ne szegjék a kedvünket és építsük meg a ránézésre 0-V-2 kapcsolástechnikájú rádióvevőnket. A készletben minden szükséges alkatrész megtalálható, gyakorlatilag egy forrasztópáka, forrasztóón és a beüzemeléshez szükséges 9V-os elem kell még. A készlet csomagolása egyben a kisrádió doboza is lesz, dekoratív famintás karton, amely mágnesesen záródik.

Az alkatrészeket vessük össze a mellékelt, német nyelvű kiskönyvben lévő darabjegyzékkel, majd a mellékelt vezetékből vágjuk le az ajánlott hosszúságú darabokat és ónozzuk le a végüket. Nem muszáj halálpontosan a megadott méretre levágni, de rövidebbet semmiképpen ne vágjunk az ajánlottnál. Jómagam azért az ellenállásokat is lemérem beültetés előtt, a multiméter nem kell a megépítéshez, de hibakeresésnél jól jöhet. Ezek után elkezdhetjük a furatgalvanizált NYÁK-lapba beültetni az alkatrészeket: először az ellenálásokat, kerámia kondenzátorokat, a 2db BC557 tranyót, majd az elkókat és az LM386 hangerősítő IC-t, végül a tekercset, ügyelve a lábkiosztásra és pozíciókra. A leírás ugyan német nyelvű, de alapfokú elektronikai ismeretekkel nyelvismeret nélkül is érthető.

A beültetett panel

A panel beültetése után a forgókondenzátort kell a képeken látható módon ráforrasztani a nyákra, ügyelve itt is arra, hogy a megfelelő (C1,C2) oldal és a beállító trimmerek lábai is be legyenek kötve. A nyákot a forgókondi és a LED fogják tartani a dobozban.

Ezek után beépíthetjük a szerelvényeket a dobozba, itt is ügyelve a megfelelő pozicionálásra.

A huzalozáshoz a leírásban szintén találunk útmutatást, a megfelelő vezetékhosszakra való tekintettel is. Azonban van egy kis “nyomdahiba”: a telep negatív vezetékét (BAT-) és a hangszóró negatív vezetékét (LS-) felcserélték. A rajz többi része rendben van.

Behuzalozva, most már meg is szólalhat!

Ha mindezekkel végeztünk, elvileg megépült a kis rövidhullámú vevőnk. Helyezzük be a 9V-os elemet, majd mindenképpen csatlakoztassunk antennát és földelést a készülékre, mivel beépített (ferrit) antennával nem rendelkezik, ellentétben a középhullámú modellel. A kertes házban élők mindenképpen előnyben vannak, de társasházban, panelben sem kell kétségbe esni: földelésnek kiváló az elektromos hálózat védőföldelése, esetleg a fűtés vagy gázcső, antennának pedig feszítsünk ki minimum 4-5 méter vezetéket (minél hosszabb annál jobb) lehetőleg az ablak fölé, ez panelházban különösen fontos, mivel a vasbeton erősen árnyékol, az ablaküvegen pedig “beömlenek” az Éter Hullámai!

Az első vételi kísérletek

Ha minden jól ment és nem kötöttünk el semmit, akkor kisrádiónkat bekapcsolva máris kezdhetjük a hullámvadászatot. Három antenna aljzat van: ezek abban különböznek, hogy mennyire “szoros” az antenna csatolása a bemenő rezgőkörhöz. Szorosabb csatolás esetén jobb az érzékenység de a rezgőkör jósága (Q-ja) leromlik, ami a szelektivitás rovására megy, lazább csatolásnál kevesebb antennajel jut az audionra, de a szelektivitása megnő. Kísérletezzük ki a nekünk legmegfelelőbb aljzat használatát!

A második potméterrel állíthatjuk az audion visszacsatolását, itt vihetjük gerjedésbe is, ha távíró (CW) vagy egyoldalsávos (SSB) adást szeretnénk venni, de mint az elején írtam, ezzel óvatosan!

Estava conversando com Maurício hoje sobre isso – na verdade, a conversa era sobre a gota de Conrad, mas de uma coisa a outra terminamos nisso de histórias zen e lembrei de uma coisa que li na biografia de Stape, The several lives of Joseph Conrad.

Conrad estava no Congo e, como sabemos, quase nada dava certo. O barco, arruinado, era remendado no que chamavam caridosamente de porto; entediado e febril, ele não sabe o que fazer, espera uma resolução, que resolvam por ele, até que de fato o acaso resolve, pelo menos em parte, sua indecisão, confinando-o, doente, à cama.

É fim de tarde, ou parece isso pela luz. Em seu torpor debaixo do mosquiteiro, ouviu dois homens murmurando no alpendre, e esforçou a vista para enxergar melhor. Um deles tentava acender um cachimbo e, depois de ouvir uma frase, deixou o cachimbo cair – tremeu? Terá tremido? O outro insistia – falava em voz baixa, mas com veemência – e tocou no ombro do que queria fumar, ergueu um dedo. Não, não!, dizia o primeiro, enquanto se abaixava para recolher o cachimbo e um pouco do fumo. Não, não!, insistia, respondendo ao murmúrio do insistente.

Conrad viu e ouviu isso, ou acha que viu e ouviu – depois, não vai conseguir lembrar quem falou o que, ou mesmo se alguém falou alguma coisa. O que tinha sido testemunhado juntou-se ao meio mal lembrado e resultou que foi com isso que Conrad sonhou logo depois:

Um homem caminha, muscular mas ofegante, andrajoso; quer sair da selva, se rasga nos cipós, o mato é hostil. Vê um esmaecimento e isso lhe parece bom: se dirige pra lá e, quando se aproxima, sente um puxão na perna. Olha – é uma jibóia, imensa, que começa a se enroscar. Decide ignorá-la e insiste avante, se embaraça nos passos agora mais pesados: está negociando a caminhada com um membro sinuoso adicional e com vontade própria, mas adia este problema, e prossegue. Já é fato: ouve o resfolegar da máquina do trem, a vibração da máquina, está perto de um trilho de trem. Mais uns passos, mais dificuldade, menos fôlego, cai, tropeça em si mesmo, a jibóia avança entre suas pernas mas, enfim, alcança os trilhos e, nesse exato momento, seu olhar divisa um lampejo do outro lado das folhas: é uma manta, parece um planta que se move e recua um pouco e, antes que possa sequer discriminar o que vê, muito menos refletir ou ponderar sobre um curso de ação possível, tendo já arrastado a jibóia por um bom quinhão, sente o vapor da proximidade do tigre. Cai nos trilhos: uma parafernália indecifrável. O trem se aproxima, vira a curva. Ei-lo agora:

Conrad acorda nesse momento, está suado. Que alívio!, pensa, Que sorte! Anos depois, quando lembra dessa história – incomodado com a gota, entediado e adoentado, mas agora bem fornido e aconchegado em seu inverno britânico – pensa também que não sabe quem teve sorte. Ele ou o homem do sonho? Quem teve sorte?

Mais um capítulo do meu diário de leitura altamente eclético. Na verdade ele está um pouco defasado (li esses livros há mais de dois meses, e já li outros depois), mas isso é até bom, pois garante conteúdo para mais alguns posts desta série - já que não ando lendo nada ultimamente.

Guardas! Guardas!, de Terry Pratchett (São Paulo: Conrad Editora do Brasil, 2005) foi meu primeiro contato com o Discworld, o mundo fantástico criado pelo (também fantástico) autor inglês. Interessei-me pela obra de Pratchett quando li em algum lugar que ele era uma espécie de “Douglas Adams medieval”. “Não tem como ser ruim”, pensei. E não tinha, mesmo.

Bom, decidido a conhecer o autor, não foi difícil escolher por qual livro começar:  o primeiro, claro. O problema é que não consegui achá-lo para comprar; optei, então, pelo volume que traz um dragão desenhado na capa. Adoro dragões.

Guardas! Guardas! é, em síntese, uma história de aventura envolvendo guardas e dragões. Os guardas são os membros da Vigilância Noturna, uma espécie de guarda municipal da cidade de Ankh-Morpork; o dragão é um bicho gigante da espécie Draco Nobilis, que foi invocado ao mundo por um homem misterioso com pretensões perversas e resolve ficar, fazendo da cidade seu domínio. Por ser um dragão de raça nobre, o bicho decide se tornar o rei do pedaço, mas terá de encarar a (nem tão) valente oposição da Vigilância. A história nonsense é recheada de situações inusitadas e personagens cativantes, com destaque para o ingênuo brutamontes Cenoura e o capitão Vimes, um beberrão cheio de dilemas morais.

Não direi aqui que o livro é perfeito: Pratchett não é muito bom em fazer descrições, e algumas vezes é meio difícil imaginar a aparência dos personagens ou mesmo entender o que está acontecendo. Além disso, como sua obra tem a pretensão de ser engraçada, é natural que algumas passagens soem meio bobas e forçadas. Mas nada disso chega a comprometer o resultado final: um livro divertidíssimo, agradável, viciante, daqueles que fazem você deixar de trabalhar/dormir/estudar para ler “só mais um capítulo”, que você pega e não larga até terminar, e fica desconsolado quando percebe que acabou. INDISCUTIVELMENTE relevante.

Que em nada se parece com Carrie, a estranha, o primeiro livro de Stephen King (Rio de Janeiro: Objetiva, 2007). Este livro até já saiu em filme, embora eu nunca tenha visto. Conta a história de Carrie, uma menina impopular com poderes telecinéticos.

Maltratada incessantemente pelos colegas de colégio e sempre reprimida pela mãe, uma mulher insuportável e extremamente religiosa, a vida de Carrie não é das mais fáceis ou agradáveis. A garota carrega muita raiva consigo, e o ódio se desenvolve na mesma proporção que seus estranhos superpoderes – para o azar de seus desafetos.

A narrativa tem um ritmo meio estranho, misturando romance com documentário, intercalando passado e futuro. O andamento da história é quebrado por depoimentos e trechos de reportagens (fictícios, obviamente) que se passam depois dos acontecimentos do livro. Esses trechos pseudojornalísticos são meio chatos mas acabam sendo úteis, já que aumentam o suspense e servem para dividir os capítulos em partes menores.

Apesar do jeitão meio teen/colegial do livro, algumas das principais características da obra de King estão nele: há suspense, terror, violência, coisas sobrenaturais, personagens moralmente questionáveis e psicologicamente perturbados. Se você já leu outro(s) livro(s) do autor e gostou, provavelmente vai gostar deste também.

Um ótimo livro, embora não dos melhores. Bastante relevante.

James Marlow: He desarrollado la historia desde un enfoque actual, pero las raíces vienen de historias tradicionales que me contaba mi abuelo. Parecer ser que su abuelo fue marino y disfrutó de algunas aventuras en los mares del sur. O eso, o era un gran mentiroso. (se rie sonoramente y toma un sorbo de bourbon)

CW: En el mundo actual, ¿cómo piensas que tiene cabida un personaje romantico como el tuyo?

J.M: Tuan Jim es una historia de superación. Un tío que la cagó de joven, pero que sabe que por dentro vale mucho. Sabe que tiene que rehacerse y seguir adelante, que la vida le depara algo más grande, que puede marcar una diferencia, cuando hasta ahora no ha conseguido marcar ni una mierda.

CW: No parece un personaje que la gente quiera tomar como ejemplo.

J.M: Es que no es un ejemplo. Es más bien un reflejo. El triunfo de Spiderman fue ser un chaval corriente, del instituto, alguien normal intentando aprovechar su poder. Tuan Jim también es normal, es uno de nosotros… (hace una pausa, como remarcando sus últimas palabras)… que sabe que tiene un poder especial y lucha contra todo y contra todos, no gracias a su poder, sino intentando encontrarlo.

CW: ¿Y tiene que ir a buscarlo hasta Borneo?

J.M: Supongo. La localización de Tuan Jim es uno de sus puntos fuertes. Batman tiene a Gotham, la ciudad más avanzada del mundo, Spiderman a Nueva York, el centro del mundo… los superhéroes convencionales se enfrentan a amenazas mundiales, son famosos, con su poder cambian el mundo… Tuan Jim está sólo en un punto muy pequeño del universo, todas sus victorias son pequeñas victorias, casi inapreciables. Salvar una aldea, rescatar a unos niños perdidos, no sé, son cosas buenas, pero el mundo va a seguir igual aunque no las hiciera. A veces ni siquiera puede hacerlas. Tuan Jim no actúa por hacer un mundo mejor… sólo busca sacar lo mejor que tiene dentro.

CW: James, la pregunta es obligada, ¿la coincidencia con el nombre de tu héroe no será casual?

J.M: Pues no. Pero no te vayas a creer que le puse mi nombre al personaje.

CW: ¿Entonces?

J.M: Los Jim en la familia Marlow parecen ser una costumbre desde principios de siglo. A cada primer hijo desde mi bisabuelo por lo menos, nos han llamado James. El nombre del personaje viene de que todas las historias increíbles que me contaba mi abuelo acerca de los viajes de su abuelo estaban protagonizadas por un tío llamado Jim. Me pareció buena idea mantener el nombre del personaje.

CW: Gracias, James Marlow y mucha suerte con la salida de los últimos números de la serie. ¿Algo que nos puedas adelantar?

J.M: La historia ya tiene un final, pero no creas que te lo voy a contar. ¡Tendrás que ir al quiosco! (se levanta, se pone su chupa de cuero y sale de la sala… ¡llevándose su vaso de bourbon!)

Richard Dawkins:

Questo è il secondo dei dialoghi sponsorizzati da RDF. Qualche anno fa ero ad una conferenza, nella parte delle domande finali, e di solito non mi vengono rivolte domande ostili se non quelle poste da gente religiosa, che si possono affrontare molto facilmente, ma poi mi è stata rivolta una domanda ostile che non era così facile da affrontare, era una domanda molto ingegnosa e difficile e ho pensato: Chi è questo qui? Si è rivelata come una di quelle domande del tipo “Sono ateo, ma”, che sono sempre le più difficili da trattare, ed era ovviamente Lawrence Krauss. Non l’ho trattato molto bene all’epoca, ma da allora siamo diventati amici stretti e ho un rispetto enorme per quello che sta facendo nel campo della divulgazione scientifica, il campo che da poco non esercito più. È un fisico illustre, autore di molti libri, si interessa anche di scienza in generale e della promozione della comprensione della scienza in generale. Si è recentemente trasferito in Arizona per avviare quella che ritengo essere un’iniziativa molto interessante. È direttore associato del centro Beyond e codirettore dell’iniziativa Cosmology e direttore dell’iniziativa Origins all’università dell’Arizona. Quindi lo studio delle origini, le origini di tutti i tipi, dalle origini dell’universo alle origini della vita e di qualsiasi cosa possibile, che iniziativa incredibilmente entusiasmante da avviare all’università. Veramente, lasciatemi dire che la mia amicizia con Richard è stata speciale in molti sensi, ogni volta che stiamo assieme mi fa pensare in modo leggermente diverso, spero che valga vicendevolmente, ed è un vero piacere, un onore essere qui. Richard mi ha chiesto di parlare di cosmologia e quando ho spiegato alla signora dell’organizzazione quello di cui avrei parlato e ho proposto diversi titoli, lei ha pensato che fossero deprimenti e allora ha detto: perché non “Siamo tutti fottuti”?, ma ho deciso di non usare quel titolo.

Ho messo questa citazione qui, mi piacciono le citazioni quando introduco qualcosa da leggere, mi è in qualche modo utile:

Voglio parlare della nostra moderna visione della cosmologia e del modo in cui ha cambiato la nostra visione dell’universo, del passato e del futuro e in qualche modo del modo in cui questa visione è chiaramente straordinaria e molto più straordinaria che nelle fiabe inventate nelle situazioni più religiose. Ma il punto chiave è il mistero. Il Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica riconosce i contributi fondamentali della scienza, salvo però omettere di trarne le conseguenze per ritornare ancora e sempre al Creatore, al quale – con la finezza di ragionamento non privo di ironia di cui solo chi resiste temporalmente da millenni è capace – gli studiosi dovrebbero essere grati:

Ora abito a Phoenix e la gente sa cosa sono queste, ma quando vivevo a Cleveland dovevo dire alla gente che queste erano stelle. Questa è una fotografia di un ammasso globulare ed è una cosa bellissima in una bella notte di cielo terso, ma quello che voglio dirvi è che la nostra visione ha cambiato il nostro universo così tanto che la materia veramente importante non sono le stelle e le galassie, ma la materia che non potete vedere, la materia misteriosa che domina la natura. È un racconto del mistero, quindi cominciamo.

Gli ammassi globulari sono ammassi relativamente densi di centinaia di migliaia di stelle sottoposte a gravità, in continuo movimento, un po’ come api attorno ad un alveare. Data la relativa densità, qualche volta, ogni qualche milione di anni, le stelle che li compongono si scontrano, qualche volta qualcuna sfugge all’ammasso, più spesso si possono sfiorare. Alcune sono vecchissime, solo qualche centinaia di milioni di anni meno vecchie dell’universo. Sono oggetti privilegiati di studio per capire come si sono formate le galassie. Recentemente si è scoperto che possono contenere diverse generazioni di stelle, composte da materiali diversi, con proprietà chimiche diverse: è il caso ad esempio di NGC 2808.

Einstein ha sviluppato la teoria della relatività nel 1916, un periodo interessante perché lui aveva sviluppato questa teoria, che era la prima teoria che spiegava non solo come gli oggetti si muovono attraverso lo spazio, ma anche come lo spazio stesso potesse espandersi e ed essere dinamico, una teoria importante sulla presenza della materia, ed era bellissima, e lui in qualche modo sapeva di avere ragione, ma all’epoca era in contrasto con le osservazioni, il che dava fastidio ai fisici in passato, e l’osservazione era che l’universo era stabile ed eterno, quella era la saggezza convenzionale, nella scienza all’epoca, che l’universo c’era da sempre e che per sempre ci sarebbe stato. E la sua teoria discordava da questo perché la teoria della relatività generale soffre dello stesso problema di cui soffre la gravitazione di Newton: la gravità attrae, attira e non spinge mai e se si mettono le stelle e le galassie là fuori, non restano semplicemente là, la gravità crea un’attrazione dell’universo che le tira assieme. Allora ha cercato di immaginare cosa fare ed è stato capace di modificare leggermente la sua teoria, in modo coerente con la simmetria matematica che gli ha consentito di svilupparla. Voglio mostrarvi come l’ha fatto con delle equazioni, che è una cosa che va bene di mattina alle 9 e 45, ma ne ho molte forme pratiche qui:

Questo è per i biologi. No, sto scherzando. Ma non è del tutto finzione perché la parte sinistra dell’equazione vi parla della geometria dell’universo, del modo in cui le cose sono curve in presenza della fonte della curvatura, che in questo caso è l’energia-momento dell’universo:

curvatura = energia-momento

Bene. Sono in realtà un fisico teorico, per cui devo scrivere le robe giuste, con le lettere, è molto più illuminante per voi, ne sono sicuro:

ma questa era la teoria che non funzionava, che rappresentava l’universo in cui non vivevamo, o così pensavamo, e così è stato in grado di modificarla un po’ aggiungendo un termine supplementare nella parte sinistra, che chiamò il termine cosmologico:

Questo termine nella parte sinistra produce una piccola forza repulsiva nello spazio vuoto, così piccola da non alterare le leggi di Newton, che descrivono benissimo il moto dei pianeti attorno al sole – e lui non voleva distruggere questo – così piccola da non essere mai misurabile nel sistema solare, ma da poter diventare rilevante su scala galattica e mantenere le galassie distinte e questo è il modo in cui pensiamo che ha salvato la sua teoria. Poco dopo aver introdotto questo termine, è stato chiaro che c’era un problema.

Questa è una cartolina che ho avuto quando sono stato in vacanza in Svizzera, a Zurigo, ed è una cartolina di Einstein a Hermann Weyl, che era un fisico matematico molto famoso, ed è in tedesco, e sicuramente il vostro tedesco è migliore del mio, ma – è già il 1923 – dice già: “Se ci sbarazziamo di un universo quasistatico, che ce ne facciamo della costante cosmologica?” (“Wenn schon keine quasistatische Welt, dann fort mit dem kosmologischen Glied“), perché capì che se l’universo si sta veramente espandendo, che è quello che ora sappiamo e vi parlerò del modo in cui siamo venuti a saperlo, allora non si ha più bisogno di una costante cosmologica. Se l’universo si espande, la gravità può al converso attrarlo, rallentarne l’espansione, e la grande domanda della cosmologia del XX secolo diventò: c’è abbastanza gravità da fermare l’espansione? Quando finirà l’universo? Finirà con uno schianto o con un lamento? Con un big crunch, l’opposto di un big bang, o si espanderà per sempre? E questo è il motivo per cui io, in quanto fisico delle particelle, sono finito nella cosmologia, perché volevo essere la prima persona a sapere come il mondo finirà.
