Holiday Cheer

Things have been grooving along here at the DarcyArts arts shack.

I’ve been busy every day putting together chimps or squiddies.

It hasn’t been crazy but rather a pleasantly steady flow.

Visits from the kids will make this season even more warm and interesting.

Jessica was here last week. Here she is on the upstairs porch of The Attic . it was a beautiful day.

We also made it over to one of the downtown antique collectives.

One of the best things about it was the giant martian blow man.

We both got good snaps of the green dude in action. Here are my shots.

Is it strange of me to consider this next shot a sort of 70s , wha chukka wha, sexy up the thigh shot? What would Tom Ford think?

I heard designer, filmaker, Tom Ford on Fresh Air last week and liked him very much. I was amused at how much of a prude Terry Gross seemed about male nudity. Ford was amused, too, and asked her why she automatically read the male nude in question as sexual.

Their conversation was very interesting stuff on advertising and design and cultural aesthetics. Yummy.

I love Terry Gross and find that the pinball-like bells go off in my head every time an interviewee says

“That’s a good question, Terry.” Of course it is.

Busy is a Good Thing

My fingers are nicked and stabbed. My forearms achy from pulling stitches tight but I’ll sleep well tonight.

I’m finishing off my two latest chimps. These are slightly smaller versions. but they require all the handmade detail that make these chimps what they are.

I have to attach their legs and arms, sew hats and monogram them.

I put a little pink heart on the bottom of the left foot with my initials.

Cute.

I will photograph these guys again when they are finished.

These chimp projects take alot of time and I should not charge so little for the work.

I’ll have to get real with my feelings of self-worth.

Dude, I deserve to pay myself more money.

Over here at the Hamilton Street homestead we are grooving on Udon noodle soup with miso and mushrooms and seaweed. Delicious and nutritious.

I’ve been making scones regularly. I want to be a scone maven. I am the future queen of white trash drop scones, made with sweetened evaporated milk.

I put blackberries in the batch I made today. The seeds are cruddy but they are tasty otherwise.

I’ll try a more subtle flavor next time. Orange maybe.

Frank and I watch The Rolling Stones Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus last night. It was a very nice trip down memory lane.

Jethro Tull kicked ass. Taj Mahal and Jesse Edwin Davis kicked ass.

The Who slayed mighty dragons with a killer version of A Quick One While He’s Away. Dear, dear Pete.

Keith Richards looked good enough to eat. He obviously loved playing bass in the Dirty Mac with John Lennon, Eric “Whining Boy” Clapton, Mitch Mitchell.

If I could have any stuffed animal for my bedroom I’d have a life-sized Keith circa 1968.

Hmmm. There’s something to work on in my spare time.

My Keith doll has to be wearing the outfit from the Dirty Mac performance. Yumm.

So many ideas so little time.

Ah, well back to work.

Lightning Round

Two quick round trips to San Francisco in the last five days have cured me of my “oh, it’s such a long trip” fear.

Google Maps gave me a really straightforward way to get directly to my daughter’s door in the southern (I think) Mission (near McLaren Park).

San Francisco’s diagonal set up, or at least the Diagonal placement of main vein Market Street/Misson had fucked with my mind for decades. I am making an effort to fix a picture of the layout in my memory.

Finally made it up to Bernal Heights after dreaming of it for months. This is a photo from the back side, the northeast side of the park (I think) looking over the Mission, Portrero, SOMA, towards the financial district in the far distance.

After five or six visits now I am beginning to understand how I feel about the city. My daughter loves it and I am so happy that she is happy in a place where I used to roam. She is far more successful at living there than I ever was. I was dead poor. Eventually I got a soul-killing job as a file clerk at an insurance agency in the financial district.

Still, I had to get back to the suburban southland before long. Frank was going places I wouldn’t go and the energy and ghosty spirits in the homes in San Francisco were more than I could handle.

I don’t think I ever made peace with the spirits that swirl in the city. Perhaps during an earlier incarnation I died in the big earthquake and fire. Perhaps I can just feel those vibrations still resonating.

I am more deeply suburban and country oriented than I wanted to admit while in the thrall of my occasional, enthusiastic longings to return to city life.

In the past few years I’ve dreamed of the city’s culture and international flavors.

It’s understandable. After dwelling in Redding for 15 years a girl needs to imagine that she might be able to dip into an urban environment once again.

There are so many things to see there. One of the more interesting is the shop Paxton Gate on Valencia at 19th. It’s full of natural and odd, beautifully unnatural things.

There is an Alligoose taxidermy mashup. Lots of but and fossil and nature related art.

I love skeletons and insects.

There is a child’s version of Paxton gate a few doors down from the main shop at Valencia and 19th Street.

Paxton gate has bugs in resin, big roaches handmade in lovely, satin cloth, horse heads transformed into unicorns.

There are lovely handmade silver rings. I was moved to choose one for Frank and one for myself.

I would go there often if I lived in SF.

Rents are still outrageous in the Mission District and every other desirable area.

I would need to win the lottery to put myself on Cortland Street in Bernal Heights. A really really big lottery.

There are wonderful places to eat. ChaYa Sushi is all vegetarian and delicious. Very reasonably priced and wholesome.

I loved hanging out with Je ss and drinking in these wonders after I rode her home Sunday but I was happy to be back.

I made it home in three hours! 80 MPH all the way, safely, cautiously.

Redding and the far north may not be as exciting as San Francisco. When you are young you look for excitement outside yourself. For me now I make my own world where ever I am. I am working from the inside out and I don’t have a crushing need to be recognized.

Anonymity is a pleasure, a luxury I would never forfeit.

I love plenty of space, uncrowded streets, a slow pace, quiet and the ease of fetching goods.

I avoid shopping on the weekends to avoid crowds.

I am not a joiner of groups but a loner at ease with my own thoughts.

I love the mountains that surround Redding, the winter skies, the river, the trees.

just got home from Kingstown..the apartment/commercial space were building is nearly finish.. puyat kagabi pagod naman ngayon...hayy..buhay!

… scheduled for tomorrow for the continuation of constructions in Kingstown..Constructions were delayed for 1 and a half to 2 months because of some financial problems but after all the delays it is finally decided to be continued tomorrow..the house was converted into an apartment/commercial space type of a building. ….almost finished actually, only partition walls are needed to be worked on

Towards a Theory of Synergistic Social Relations.

I read Brandon William’s blog entry today which asked “How is your synergy?” This is a really good question. It got me thinking, heavily. Of particular interest was the part about focussing on what you want even when you don’t know what you want. I quite like that notion. It implies hyper-creativity and a manifestation of ideas and constructs from the places inside of us that get repressed during our everyday struggles. Synergy can also be about taking struggle and all of the components attributed to problem solving, adaptability, and a relentless need for ambition. In other words, clarity can at times come from the working from clear questions of the personal and of the subjective.

I have been experiencing a lot of synergy recently. Quite recently. For example, I have been organizing an event to be held in a few months. Something that will involve guest speakers, intrigued audiences, media coverage, publicity (the sexiest word I know right now), and the development of ideas and discourses. One of my goals in this project, which I am not going to name or say what it is going to be just yet, is to produce some kind of productive convergence between academic prowess and commercial development. Look forward to hearing more about this in the coming weeks ahead.

But back to the concept of synergy. Yeah, lots of things seem to be beginning to happen as I am focussing on my reinvention from idle academic to media pusher-junkie-harnesser. As Brandon states, synergy emerges as one produces synergistic relationships. As in everything, ideas and events become real when they are produced through interaction. I suppose this is a different way of looking at methods of networking and building professional and personal relationships, but importantly as it relates to allowing relationships to come into your life that will direct you positively and democratically, not otherwise.

Part of this is from practicing the art of patience and privilege. What I mean is, I provide patience and privilege to others around me who may at some point begin dialogues that can inspire, invent, and construct opportunities for creativity and agency, which I often define as the capacity for power-to-do or power-to-be. I hope what comes from this practice is newly learned experiential knowledge on how to recognize moments to harness, as well as becoming part of so many great socially defined events with others. How dull life is when everything is about you alone. How mediocre days become when you spend all of your time inside of your own head, with your own thoughts and emotions. That is one of the reasons why I had to leave graduate school and put a stay on academia. It was aiding in the creation of a very boring ego, bent on self pity and doubt, depression, and very little synergy.

When you free yourself from your restrictive ideas and mindset, you become open to lots of other types of creative work that can be part of your everyday reality. When that happens, so do relationships that offer the capacity to produce things that are greater than the sum of their parts (Williams, 2009) That is when knowledge really becomes interesting. When there is no mastery, only exploration. When there is no need to force intent and purpose on reason, but the fluid rigour of exploration and creative work. In other words, real ideas and achievements become foreseeable and recognizable, as possibilities and impressions of identity formational relations.

Psycholinguistic and corpus-linguistic evidence for L2 constructions

In Construction Grammar, highly frequent syntactic configurations are assumed to be stored as symbolic units in the mental lexicon alongside words. Considering the example of gerund and infinitival complement constructions in English (She tried rocking the baby vs. She tried to rock the baby), this study combines corpus-linguistic and experimental evidence to investigate the question whether these patterns are also stored as constructions by German foreign language learners of English. In a corpus analysis based on 3,343 instances of the two constructions from the British component of the International Corpus of English, a distinctive collexeme analysis was computed to identify the verbs that distinguish best between the two constructions; these verbs were used as experimental stimuli in a sentence completion experiment and a sentence acceptability rating experiment. Two kinds of short-distance priming effects were investigated in the completion data: we checked how often subjects produced an ing-/to-/’other’-construction after having rated an ing- or to-construction (rating-to-production priming), and how often they produced an ing-/to-/’other’-construction when they had produced and ing- or to-construction in the directly preceding completion (production-to-production priming). Furthermore, we considered the proportion of to-completions before a completion in the questionnaire as a measure of a within-subject accumulative priming effect. We found no rating-to-production priming effects in the expected direction, but a weak effect in the opposite direction; short-distance production-to-production priming effects from ing to ing and from ‘other’ and to to to, and, on the whole at least, a suggestive accumulative production-to-production priming effect for both constructions. In the rating task, we found that subjects rate sentences better when the sentential structure is compatible with the main verb’s collexemic distinctiveness.

Whales and Peaceful Meals

Frank and I had fun yesterday. The Thanksgiving meal was smooth and very low key. We ate our meal while watching Peggy Sue Got Married. We clicked it in from our Netflix instant watch list.

Grandma buddied up to the Andy Griffith Show. Her very best and most comforting alternate reality.

I finished and mailed off a lovely custom order Wednesday.

Someone from Calgary, Alberta asked me to make gray whales with the words “Save the Whales” and “End Whaling” on them. I decided to put them on banners.

I think they look pretty cool.

I have a great stash of vintage buttons that I use for eyes on the long sleepy-eyed whales.

They are from a craft sale at the Discovery shop last year.

I decided to add them to the DarcyArts shop as custom banner plush critters. I’ll embroider anything on the banner for you.

Well, almost anything. No hate phrases, f*&%ers.

Naughty is fine. I’m toying with the idea of making banners that others can attach to whatever they want.

I’ll get on that next week. I’ve got big starts to sew and possibly a very large octopus.

I really enjoyed the embroidering. Pulling the thread through the vintage muslin material seemed comfortingly turn of the last, last century. Maybe it was echoes of Bright Star.

I am hoping to see that film recognized in some fashion at the Academy Awards. Jane Campion is very good.

Ah! I just discovered Campion is a Taurus!♥

Debt Fears hits Share Market and constructions industry

It came as a stunner today. Share markets worldwide tumbled with the news about Dubai’s debt status. Banks and construction companies were the ones to bear the maximum burnt. Some of them lost as much as 10% in a single trading session. Investors panicked and wanted to dump off companies involved in lavish constructions projects in Dubai and other UAE cities.

As of now Emirates has $80 billion of liabilities and out of that state owned Dubai World alone accounts for $59 billion. As the news came out that there is going to be a delay in the repayment of loans, the market freaked. This is how the global economic crisis sprouted in the first place. It was the over ambitious real estate projects in USA. Dubai’s projects have been the much needed support for manpower recruitment firms that recruit for constructions industry. Now if Dubai backfires it could spell doom for many.

Today top loosers among banks and developers include HSBC Holdings, Standard Chartered, Leighton Holdings, Japan’s Obayashi Corp, India’s DLF and many more.

TKI Sektor Informal (PLRT) ke Malaysia akan Dibuka Lagi Desember

Jakarta, BNP2TKI (23/11) – Warga negara Malaysia kemungkinan akan bisa kembali mempekerjakan Penata Laksana Rumah Tangga (PLRT) asal Indonesia bulan Desember mentang. Isyarat ini disampaikan Menteri Sumber Daya Manusia Malaysia Datuk Dr S Subramaniam sebagaimana dilannsir harian Malaysia, The Star, Senin (23/11).

Menurut Subramaniam, pembicaraan antara Malaysia dan Indonesia sedang berlangsung untuk menyelesaikan beberapa hal. “Masih ada beberapa hal lagi yang perlu diselesaikan. Begitu ini selesai, para pembantu rumah tangga bisa datang lagi ” ujarnya.

Sebagaimana diketahui, Pemerintah Indonesia telah menghentikan sementara pengiriman TKI ke Malaysia pada Juni 2009 lalu menyusul maraknya kasus kekerasan terhadap PLRT Indonesia di negeri jiran itu.

Ditandaskan Dr Subramaniam, diharapkan semua masalah akan selesai pada bulan Desember 2009. Menurut petinggi Malaysia itu, pemerintah Indonesia telah menyampaikan kesiapannya untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan tersebut secepat mungkin.

Saat ini ada diperkirakan terdapat sekitar 280 ribu PRT Indonesia yang bekerja sebagai Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (TKI) di Malaysia. (hp)

Renovating a house - project management lessons

We planned to move closer to the city when our daughter starts schooling, which is January 2010. We evaluated several plans and finally decided to move into our own home in Colombo 5. That house was given on rent, but we decided the benefits of living in the city will out weigh the rent income benefit.

We decided to do a few renovations and to give the house a bit of a face-lift before we moved there. We decided it would be easier to do the modifications before we moved so we don’t have to go through the hassle of living in a construction site.

We gave our tenant notice to leave but he overstayed by a month until he found a suitable home for himself. Then we started the renovations, with the initial plan of moving there by the beginning of December. And I was determined to put the project management best practices that I apply daily in my work to the construction and keep it within the plan and the budget.

The first thing that went off the window was the budget. When you start building, you cant always keep to the original budget. While some of the estimates given to us were way inaccurate, we also overspent on some things. It just happens that when you shop for stuff, you always end up seeing things that are far more expensive and you end up buying them.

For example, we are adding a new room to the house. First we weren’t sure if we were going to go ahead with this plan. Then our architect convinced us that it was a good plan. Building the walls of the room was the easiest thing. But getting finishes for it, was another story all together. Our bathroom is going to end up costing three times the initial estimate. Then again, we are going to build only once and we want to build it up to the standard we want.

Then came the time lines. As it turned out, the contractors estimates were etched in rubber. They kept stretching. First he would tell us that he’s finish something in three days. Then on the end of the second day he’s tell us that he needs another three days. Then at the middle of those second three days, he says he lost two days of work due to rain. Man, software is far more easy to manage.

To be fair by him, the weather didn’t exactly go our way either. We had some of the highest rainfalls to hit Colombo during this time. So he and his crew actually did lost a few days of work (about 20 man-days all in all so far).

The third issue was coordinating the different contractors. We were working with separate contractors for the masonry, carpentry, electrical wiring and aluminum excursions. As all of them were independent contractors, coordinating their schedules were a bit of a nightmare. Made me realize how better I am in committing and keeping my commitments to my clients as a freelancer.

So on the brink of the month of December, I am there at the site trying to supervise the work. But our chances of moving during the first week of December are pretty bleak. Now I would be happy if we can move within the month of December.

So the lessons learned:

When building a house, either go with an open but realistic budget or be ready to not to have the dream home. The dream home, costs money, lots of it. I am somewhere in between. My theory was things that are hard to change/remodel, go with the stuff that your heart tells you to get. For things that can be changed without a fuss later, go with the stuff that suits your budget.
Get professional advice on estimates. Our contractors are trades people, not engineers. So their estimates change, and they don’t feel bad about it. They are used to that. They don’t feel bad when they cant meet a deadline. On the other hand for me, as an IT contractor, that is one of the hardest things to do.
Have some buffer. We lost our buffer time when we allowed our tenant to over-stay.

Finally, wish for loads of luck. So that you’d find the things fast. We scouted for days sometimes to get the things we wanted. Some examples were bathroom fittings,tiles and light fixtures. After weeks of scouting we still didn’t get the things we had in our minds. We settled for the next best things, at a higher cost than anticipated.
