Now the real game begins:

Lenders and representatives of government-controlled Dubai World are currently meeting to discuss modifying some US$26 billion of the company’s total US$60 billion of debt in a process that could take months.

A failure to do so could further delay the flow of capital to hotel owners and developers, said Rich Conti, president of The Plasencia Group, an asset management and consulting company in Tampa, Florida.

“It is important they do a restructuring and that it works out for them and their lenders,” Conti said. “If they can figure out how to get through this and survive from 2010 until 2015, what you’ll end up doing is giving the repaid money back to lenders. Hospitality and real-estate lenders can recirculate that money.”

This all goes back to the $10Bn lifeline of sorts given to Dubai by Abu Dhabi. I say of sorts because if you read the press release from December 14, there’son portion that sticks out (emphasis – mine):

Sukuk obligation due today

As a first action for the new fund, the Government of Dubai has authorized $4.1bn to be used to pay the sukuk obligations that are due today.

$10bn support fund

The remaining funds would also provide for interest expenses and company working capital through April 30, 2010 – conditioned on the company being successful in negotiating a standstill as previously announced.

To me, that is a covenant test. They don’t say what the ramifications are if no standstill is negotiated, but the $5.9bn that is supposed to be available to Dubai may very well not be there for them to draw on.

Abu Dhabi didn’t give Dubai a bailout, they just gave them some time. Time to: 1) negotiate a standstill and then 2) restructure the debt.

But that’s $26bn that they’re looking to restructure. Not a small amount by any stretch. And in a market that is still liquidity constrained – no matter how much liquidity pump priming is done by governments around the world -

As for internal management and bookkeeping, this doesn’t help:

Even Chris Turner, former director of risk and assessment management at Istithmar World, a division of Dubai World, said the company did not know what its investments were, according to BusinessWeek. He said his team, in spending a year trying to put together a list of Dubai World’s holdings, found some loan documents and sales agreements in an office that had long been empty.

The Dubai World spokesman declined to identify Dubai World’s hotel holdings. “… as a private business, we simply don’t discuss this sort of information publicly,” he wrote in an e-mail.

Somehow, “oops” fails to capture the enormity of the problem. A multi-billion hotel and resort empire, with holdings across the world, can’t account for everything it holds, and what is owed.

Brilliant.

But the real problem comes down to the fundamentals: Dubai World overpaid for the properties it bought and has too much debt. What’s the market’s appetite for restructuring the deals vs. trying to take some properties off Dubai World’s hands at distressed prices?

And the last line in the article is particularly telling. Mike Cahill of HREC Investment Advisors couldn’t say it any better:

“Capital markets are not just domestic, they’re international,” he said. “An impact in one country carries to another, then another and another.”

Contagion, much?

Two astronauts (Dennis Quaid & Ben Foster) awaken from a cryogenic sleep. They have no recollection of who they are or why they are on a spaceship. They learn they are locked in a room and a third astronaut mysteriously died before they awoke. If they could get out of the room they could find out who they are and where their ship is going.

Only one problem, they also find out the ship will blow up in less than two days.

Pandorum has a lot in common with Event Horizon as haunted spaceship movies go. But it has taken that concept and expanded it some with the whole paranoia/amnesia idea. Amnesia is very scary and just imagine if you are also locked in a train, plane or spaceship headed towards oblivion.

Pandorum is a “mind fuck of a movie”. There are scenes where you don’t know where is up is down and down is up. But as Foster’s character explores the ship and tries to stop it’s destruction he runs into blood-thirsty cannibals, temperamental surviving crew members and a mystery that is so warped you wont see it coming. The film’s twist ending had me going, what the fuck?

I have always liked Ben Foster ever since he terrorized Bruce Willis in 2005’s Hostage. Foster was brilliant in that film and has been brilliant in everything he’s done from Six Feet Under to X-Men 3 to 3:10 to Yuma.

In Pandorum, he’s hero yet thanks to Foster he’s complicated, tormented and has a bravado not deserved in this character. Dennis Quaid, who hasn’t been in a sci-fi flick since 2000’s Frequency and maybe five in his whole career, does a great job with amnesia part but seems lost or out of practice when it comes to acting against blue screen. He seems very out of place in scenes where he is alone.

German actress Antje Traue

Oh I must also comment on Cam Gigandet, who once more plays the attractive yet psychotic guy he played in The OC, Never Back Down and Twilight. The guy needs to mix it up some. Will he ever get a chance to play a romantic or heroic lead?

Another surprise of the movie was German born actress Antje Traue. She is one of survivors who has keys to the mysteries of the ship. She’s part Alice in Resident Evil and part Lara Croft. She is extraordinary. I love how her character is so subdued but she’s able to bring the viciousness, agility and charisma in the most unlikely of situations.

I liked Pandorum but found it lost me in parts. I think maybe one too many lost crew members were introduced (like why was The Cook important) or maybe the middle needed some reworking.

This was an interesting movie that blurred the genre. But basically the film is Resident Evil in space.

So Says the Soothsayer

It seems contradictory.  How can the lonely (who are largely outside of social networks) get their loneliness through social networks?

It makes sense when you think of people’s movements in social networks over some period of time.  The lonely may not always have been lonely, but gradually, they tend to cluster together on the periphery of social networks, suggesting that the social connections with other lonely people exacerbates any de facto loneliness they experience.  That the lonely would be somewhere on the periphery of social networks is somewhat tautological, but that the lonely would cluster together at the periphery is not, and is surprising.

The study is by well-respected researchers (psychologist John Cacioppo from U. Chicago, Nick Christakis from Harvard’s School of Public Health, and James Fowler, a political scientist at UCSD) and will appear  in the December issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The Washington Post notes:

Although the study did not examine how loneliness spreads, Cacioppo said other research has provided clues. People who feel lonely tend to act in negative ways toward those they do have contact with, perpetuating the behavior and the emotion, he said.// <![CDATA[

“Let’s say for whatever reason — the loss of a spouse, a divorce — you get lonely. You then interact with other people in a more negative fashion. That puts them in a negative mood and makes them more likely to interact with other people in a negative fashion and they minimize their social ties and become lonely,” Cacioppo said.

[The research comprising almost 5,000 people  interviewed every two years between 1991 and 2001] showed that having a social connection to a lonely person increased the chances of developing feelings of loneliness. A friend of a lonely person was 52 percent more likely to develop feelings of loneliness by the time of the next interview, the analysis showed. A friend of that person was 25 percent more likely, and a friend of a friend of a friend was 15 percent more likely.The effect was most powerful for a friend, followed by a neighbor, and was much weaker on spouses and siblings, the researchers found. Loneliness spread more easily among women than men, perhaps because women were more likely to articulate emotions, Cacioppo said.

The researchers said the effect could not be the result of lonely people being more likely to associate with other lonely people because they showed the effect over time. “It’s not a birds-of-a-feather-flock-together effect,” Christakis said.

Where SELF RESPONSIBILITY really gets testy with people is around illness.  In our culture, we do not accept responsibility for illness – we loooooovvvve the victim stance.  We say, “I’m sick because I was exposed to a bunch of sick kids this weekend” or “My whole family has been sick with this, it was only a matter of time” or “It’s going around the office”  and yet we will march our red-eyed, mucous dripping, coughing, wheezing asses in to work, to the store, around town, claiming we are not contagious. How does THAT work?  Look, if you believe in the contagion theory, at least be consistent!

THAT SAID, I can track most respiratory illness with my clients to direct incidences of inflammation resulting from poor food choices, and the standard 7-14 days it takes for that inflammation to resolve itself into illness.  I have years of experiential data on this.  For myself, I have been able to note the same responses.  Mine come down to whether or not the external loads I’ve placed on my body are ‘reasonable’ for my body – i.e. being ‘too busy’ kicks my ass.   HOWEVER, my drive to pay attention to the workings of illness is due to the following research, which I’d like you to read closely.  I’d encourage you to do the research, it’s there (obscure, but available).  Be prepared for another level of responsibility:

TERRAIN THEORY VS THE MEDICAL MODEL (GERM THEORY)

The germ – or microbian – theory of disease was popularized by Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), the inventor of pasteurization. This theory says that there are fixed, external germs (or microbes) which invade the body and cause a variety of separate, definable diseases. In order to get well, you need to identify and then kill whatever germ made you sick. The tools generally employed are drugs, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Prevention includes the use of vaccines as well as drugs, which – theoretically at least – work by keeping germs at bay.

Just prior to the time that Pasteur began promoting the “monomorphic” germ theory, a contemporary by the name of Claude Bernard (1813-1878) was developing the theory that the body’s ability to heal was dependent on its general condition or internal environment. Thus disease occurred only when the terrain or internal environment of the body became favorable to disease.

An extremely brilliant contemporary of Claude Bernard’s was Antoine Bechamp (1816-1908).  Bechamp had degrees in physics, chemistry and biology. In addition he was a medical doctor and a university professor. Bechamp built upon and extended Bernard’s idea, developing his own theory of health and disease which revolved around the concept of “pleomorphism.”

Through meticulous research and in contrast to Pasteur’s subsequent, misinformed promotion of “monomorphic” or single-formed, fixed state microbes (or germs), Bechamp had discovered tiny organisms (or microorganisms) he called “microzyma” which were “pleomorphic” or “many-formed.” (Pleo = many and morph = form.) Interestingly, these microzyma were found to be present in all things whether living or dead, and they persist even when the host has died. Many were impervious to heat as well.

Bechamp’s microzyma, including specific bacteria, could take on a number of  forms during the host’s life cycle and these forms depended (as Bernard contended)  primarily on the chemistry of their environment, or the biological terrain, or to put it a third way, the condition of the host. In other words there is no single cause of disease. Instead disease results when microzyma change form, function and toxicity according to the terrain of the host.   Bad bacteria, viruses and fungi are merely the forms assumed by the microzymas when there is a condition or terrain that favors disease and these “bad” microzyma themselves give off toxic byproducts, further contributing to a weakened terrain.

This is how Bechamp himself put it in his last book The Third Element of the Blood: “. . . the microzyma, whatever its origin, is a ferment; it is organized, it is living, capable of multiplying, of becoming diseased and of communicating disease. . . All mycrozyma are ferments of the same order – that is to say, they are organisms, able to produce alcohol, acetic acid, lactic acid and butyric acid.  . . In a state of health the microzymas of the organism act harmoniously, and our life is, in every meaning of the word, a regular fermentation. In a state of disease, the microzymas do not act harmoniously, and the fermentation is disturbed; the mycrozymas have either changed their function or are placed in an abnormal situation by some modification of the medium. . .”

Through his research, Bechamp showed that the essence of life is a “fermentation” process of digestion, assimilation, disassimilation and excretion. Interruptions in any of these functions would result in a lack of energy, full blown disease or even death. Rather than causing disease, Bechamp showed that harmful mycrozyma – which Pasteur took to be external germs attacking a host - actually arises when the body’s normal metabolic processes are disturbed.

Thus, according to Bernard, Bechamp and their successors, disease occurs to a large extent as a function of biology and as a result of the changes that take place when metabolic processes are thrown off. Germs become symptoms that stimulate the occurrence of more symptoms – which ultimately culminate in disease. A body thus weakend also naturally becomes vulnerable to external harmful microzyma – or if you prefer pleomorphic germs. So, our bodies are in effect mini-ecosystems, or biological terrains in which nutritional status, toxicity levels, inflammation, and pH balance play key roles.

For these and other reasons Bechamp argued strenuously against vaccines, asserting that “The most serious disorders may be provoked by the injection of living organisms into the blood.” Untold numbers of researchers have agreed with him. Nonetheless Pasteur and his like-minded contemporary Robert Koch – both being shameless self-promoters - easily won the propaganda war favoring the widespread use of vaccines – which then made boatloads of money for everyone associated.  In fact, according to researcher E. Douglas Hume, if it had not been for mass acceptance of vaccines, the germ theory might very well have died a quiet death.

Decades after Pasteur’s death researchers tried to expose the fact that Pasteur liberally “borrowed”, plagiarized and misinterpreted the work of others, especially that of Bechamp – which is how Pasteur came up with the “germ” theory. The efforts of these researchers unfortunately have had little effect on the practice of medicine or the way we think about disease.

Instead, as Dr. Bernard Jensen and Mark Anderson assert in their book Empty Harvest, “The germ theory is still believed to be the central cause of disease because around it exists a colossal supportive infrastructure of commercial interests that built multi-billion-dollar industries based upon this theory. To the scientific satisfaction of many in the health field, it has long been disproven as the primary cause of disease. Germs are, rather, an effect of disease.”

Interestingly and to this day, the whole theory of microzymas and how they operate has never been disproved – or proven false – by opposing research. To the contrary, decades of research – beginning with Pasteur himself – has only served to bolster the mycrozyma theory. Not only does the germ theory remain unsubstantiated today, but Pasteur himself recanted it in his private journal, writing the famous words which were revealed many decades after his death:

“It is not the germ that causes disease but the terrain in which the germ is found.”

… en dépit du « nouveau contrat social » annoncé par son président, France Télécom ne parvient pas à endiguer la vague de suicides qui frappe ses salariés. Si les médias s’attardent sur les motifs des passages à l’acte – le « management par la peur » – peu abordent les véritables raisons du phénomène de contagion. Et pour cause : ils en sont les principaux responsables !

Les recherches en psychologie sociale nous révèlent « qu’immédiatement après une histoire de suicide sensationnelle, le taux de suicide augmente très nettement dans les zones où la nouvelle a été largement diffusée » (Phillips). On parle alors d’effet Werther, en référence au célèbre roman de Goethe (Les souffrances du jeune Werther), où le héros met fin à ses jours et dont le retentissement fut à l’origine d’une vague de suicides à travers l’Europe, au XIXème siècle. Pourquoi ? En raison du pouvoir de la preuve sociale : face à une situation où nous ne savons pas quoi faire, « nous décidons du comportement à adopter en nous fondant sur les actes des autres, surtout lorsque ces autres nous paraissent semblables à nous-mêmes » (Cialdini). Pour des personnes désemparées, l’annonce du suicide d’un de leurs pairs résonne comme un acte approprié qu’ils finissent par mettre à exécution. Les lettres des dernières victimes semblent d’ailleurs corroborer cette thèse en inscrivant explicitement le passage à l’acte dans la vague de suicides (lexpress.fr).

A ce titre, l’effet Werther est pris très au sérieux par l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé. Son département de santé mentale et toxicomanies publiait ainsi en 2002 des recommandations très précises à destination des médias : ne pas consacrer leur première page à un suicide, de ne pas publier la lettre laissée par une personne suicidée, ne pas le réduire à une seule cause, ne pas parler d’épidémie de suicides, ne pas présenter le suicide comme une méthode employée pour trouver une solution à ses problèmes personnels, ne pas rapporter un comportement suicidaire comme une réponse compréhensible aux changements sociaux, culturels ou à une récession et ne pas présenter les suicidés comme des martyres (http://www.who.int/mental_health/media/en/626.pdf).

Some of the nonsense conservatives say makes sense if you subscribe to their magical beliefs about evil, according to which evil seems to spread like a contagion. On this view, you can be infected with evil just by being near evil things or evil people. On this view, evil spreads like the flu—the equivalent of anti-bacterial hand gel is the armor of prayer.

Merely having a Buddhist temple next door could ruin your faith in Jesus. Having an establishment in your neighborhood that serves alcohol could destroy the neighborhood. On this view, mere exposure to evil (or sin or sinful behavior) can “rub off” on others and make them sick as well.

If you don’t believe in the evil-is-contagious theory, you’ll be flabbergasted when conservatives insist that gay marriage can destroy society. But if you hold this view, it makes absolutely perfect sense.

The problem is that these magical beliefs about evil contagion are flat-out wrong.

We should not be tolerant of this view; we should debunk it every time we get the chance.

Last week the White House announced that President Obama would be having a talk with our nation’s children. In the 1960s Democratic President John Kennedy addressed all Americans many time over television and most parents, Whites and Blacks, made certain that their children sat before the television to hear him. This is repeated for every president since. Of course Clinton and the Bush presidents were broadcast into the schools themselves.

The only substantive difference between those presidents school addresses and the propose one by President Obama is that the formers have pink skin and the latter brown.

The parents who are so outraged about the president’s speech or talk are those who did not vote for him, and these did not do so specifically because they have fears of a so-called “Black Man” being president. These are the very same folks who are fighting against, and consciously lying about, the President’s healthcare proposals.

These American Racists do not believe that they are doing anything wrong. In fact, they believe they are acting with good motive and action. They are not directly responsible for their ailments because it is a real mental sickness which their own parents and other adults in their respective worlds contaminated them with. They in turn are psychogenetically passing those traits down to their children and others in their worlds.

Yes we need to pray for these sick brothers and sisters. And yes, they are our sisters and brothers. Just as importantly, we must be proactive in combating this contagion that is epidemic and rearing its head as it has not been since the days of Martin Luther King and before.

We need for White Americans who are not infected with this disease of racism to get more in the face of others who are and, with assertive love that can be cunning and smart, to inoculate or temper these people out there.

Not matter what these racist parents and others say, President Obama asking children how they can help the president is a clear effort to get children personally interested and involved in civics and our world. It is the duty of every president to present themselves to school children to encourage them.

Just to go a little deeper on this issue: the crux of this racism is that racist Whites do not see themselves as part of the human family. The do not see others as part of them. It is the seeing yourself as White and others as Black, Brown etc that psychologically keeps you separate from others. This is a very deep seeded problem that will take all of us, with the help of God, to fix.

Ironically, these parents either do not realized that the rest of us see them as being disingenuious or they simply do not care. Normally, only KKK mentality would not care.

Let’s stop being Cavemen and grow up. Stop poisoning our children with that crap.

Comment avez-vous attrapé la grippe ?

Je n’en ai aucune idée. Je pense que j’ai été contaminée par des amis qui étaient malades sans le savoir.

Quels ont été les symptômes ?

Les symptômes sont arrivés très vite. Je me suis réveillée avec la gorge prise, je suis allée travailler mais je me sentais mal. La fièvre est apparue rapidement, ainsi que les courbatures et la toux sèche.

Comment votre entourage a-t-il réagi ? Etes-vous allée chez le médecin ?

Vu que j’étais à mon travail quand je me suis trouvée mal, ce sont mes collègues, inquiets, qui m’ont poussée à me rendre chez le médecin.

La maladie est-elle difficile à supporter ? Autant que la grippe saisonnière ? Combien de temps cela a-t-il duré ?

Il me semble que les symptômes de la grippe A sont beaucoup plus forts qu’une grippe normale. J’ai eu la grippe saisonnière l’hiver dernier mais je ne me sentais pas aussi mal. J’ai passé une première nuit horrible, avec des pics de fièvre allant jusqu’à 39,5 °C et des difficultés à respirer.  J’ai passé trois jours à me sentir vraiment mal en point et la toux a duré quinze jours.

Pouviez-vous sortir ou deviez-vous rester enfermée ? Portiez-vous un masque ?

Le médecin m’a prescrit des masques gratuits mais la pharmacie n’en avait plus. Le médecin m’a toutefois indiqué que je pouvais sortir, sans masque, mais en faisant attention à limiter les contacts humains.

Aviez-vous peur de transmettre le virus à votre entourage ?

J’ai eu peur de transmettre le virus à mon amoureux ou mes amis, mais par chance, ils n’ont rien attrapé.

Dans combien de temps serez-vous complètement guérie ?

Le médecin ne m’a pas donné d’indications précises quant à mon rétablissement mais m’a arrêtée cinq jours.

Comment avez-vous été soignée ?  Allez-vous vous faire vacciner à la rentrée ?

J’ai été soignée par antibiotiques, ainsi qu’avec du doliprane et du sirop contre la toux. Je ne pense pas me faire vacciner, surtout si le virus évolue. J’espère que le fait d’avoir contracté le virus de la grippe A cet été m’aura immunisée pour la rentrée. (Voir le plan du gouvernement pour la rentrée)

Etes-vous inquiète pour la rentrée ?

Je ne suis pas si inquiète que ça, car je ne fais pas partie des personnes « à risque » comme les femmes enceintes ou les personnes ayant déjà des problèmes de santé.

Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux prochaines victimes ?

Ecoutez votre médecin et prenez toutes les précautions nécessaires. Reposez-vous au maximum et surtout buvez de l’eau. Je me suis retrouvée complètement déshydratée le matin après ma première nuit. Et bien sûr, ne paniquez pas.

Les mesures prises vous ont-elles semblé adéquates ?

Oui. L’usage du Tamiflu est préconisé uniquement pour les personnes ayant plus de 39 °C de fièvre (pic que j’ai atteint la première nuit). Il m’a suffi d’utiliser des médicaments classiques pour guérir.

« La grippe A est plus dangereuse que la grippe saisonnière… », « Je ne mangerai plus de porc ! », « De toute façon, je suis jeune et en bonne santé, je ne risque rien ! ». Voici dix vrai/faux qui tordront peut-être le cou à certaines idées reçues…

1. On meurt plus de la grippe A que de la grippe saisonnière.

FAUX. Pour le moment, sur les 210 000 cas confirmés, la grippe A (H1N1) a provoqué la mort de plus de 2 000 personnes (2 185 au 30 août dernier). Mais chaque année, la grippe saisonnière entraîne le décès d’entre 250 000 et 500 000 personnes dans le monde. Le nouveau virus semble donc plus virulent. S’il est impossible de prévoir les dégâts exacts qu’il provoquera, on peut néanmoins estimer que la grippe A fera moins de victimes que la grippe saisonnière mais qu’elle touchera plus de personnes à l’échelle mondiale.

2. On peut attraper la grippe A en mangeant du porc.

FAUX. Le virus grippal ne se transmet pas par l’ingestion de viande, qu’elle soit d’origine porcine ou non. De même, les produits dérivés du porc ne sont pas dangereux pour l’homme. Le virus H1N1 est détruit lorsque la température de cuisson dépasse les 70 °C, ce qui correspond le plus souvent aux instructions données pour la préparation du porc et des autres viandes.

3. Comme pour la grippe saisonnière, les personnes âgées sont les plus « sensibles » face au nouveau virus.

FAUX. Contrairement à la grippe saisonnière, la grippe A touche en priorité les enfants et les jeunes adultes. La grippe espagnole, très proche du nouveau virus, aurait persisté jusque dans les années 1950. Ainsi, toutes les personnes nées aux alentours de ces années présenteraient des défenses immunitaires plus résistantes. Les personnes âgées semblent donc plus immunisées face au virus de la grippe A. 4. Le virus de la grippe A est la combinaison de trois autres virus.

VRAI. La combinaison génétique du nouveau virus est différente de celui de la grippe saisonnière. Le virus de la « grippe porcine » appartient au groupe A, de sous-type H1N1. Celui-ci est un virus réassorti, c’est-à-dire que c’est une combinaison de virus de souches aviaire, porcine et humaine, qui trouve ses origines tant chez les oiseaux que chez le porc et l’homme.

5. C’est un porc qui a transmis la maladie au premier homme contaminé.

FAUX. Comme le précise le professeur Antoine Flahault sur linternaute.com, « il existe à l’heure actuelle beaucoup d’incertitudes quant à l’origine de ce nouveau virus. […] Le virus H1N1 serait apparu chez un porc mexicain mais il n’a pas été identifié donc on en n’est pas certain. Historiquement, il est vrai que le porc a souvent un rôle dans l’émergence d’épidémies de grippe ». L’origine de ce virus reste donc encore à préciser, même si une autre hypothèse est plausible.

6. Ce n’est pas la grippe A qui cause les décès mais les complications qui l’accompagnent.

VRAI. Les complications de la grippe A, provoquées par le virus, peuvent s’avérer très graves pour l’homme. Elles peuvent être d’ordre respiratoire (asthme) ou mener à des infections plus importantes telle que la pneumonie. Ainsi, les personnes déjà victimes de ce genre de maux sont les plus fragiles face à la grippe A. Mais on ne meurt pas réellement de la grippe, on meurt des suites de ces maladies qu’elle a provoquées.

7. Le vaccin de la grippe saisonnière est efficace contre la grippe A.

FAUX. Le virus de la grippe A est de la même famille que celui de la grippe saisonnière, cependant il ne se soigne pas exactement de la même façon. Il est donc nécessaire de créer un nouveau vaccin spécifique contre la grippe A. C’est pourquoi l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) a confié le développement de ce vaccin à plusieurs laboratoires dans le monde. (Pour en savoir plus, lire Les labos étaient-ils au courant ?)

8. On peut être porteur du virus et ne pas développer la maladie.

VRAI. Certaines personnes peuvent être porteuses du virus sans avoir les symptômes de la grippe et donc ne pas développer la maladie. C’est le cas lorsque la charge virale est très faible. Cela ne signifie pas pour autant qu’elles ne puissent pas contaminer leur entourage.

9. Il faut éviter de voyager dans les pays à risques (Mexique, USA, Canada…).

FAUX. Le virus circulant dans le monde entier, il n’est pas nécessaire d’arrêter de voyager. On peut contracter le virus aussi bien sur son lieu de travail qu’en vacances à l’étranger. Il convient cependant d’observer une hygiène stricte et de contacter un médecin local en cas de suspicion de maladie.

10. On peut transmettre le virus à son animal de compagnie, qui pourrait ainsi transmettre le virus à d’autres personnes.

FAUX. Le virus de la grippe A se transmet d’humain à humain uniquement. Cette grippe étant de la même famille que la grippe saisonnière, les animaux ne peuvent la contracter et donc la transmettre à d’autres humains.

Antibiotique : substance ayant pour action de bloquer ou de détruire les bactéries.

Anticorps : protéine présente dans le sang et utilisée par le système immunitaire pour défendre l’organisme contre des antigènes.

Antigène : macromolécule naturelle ou synthétique, reconnue par des anticorps ou des cellules du système immunitaire et capable d’engendrer une réponse immunitaire.

Antimicrobien : substance qui tue ou ralentit la croissance des microbes tels que les bactéries, les virus ou les parasites.

Antiseptique : substance qui tue ou prévient la croissance des bactéries et des virus sur les surfaces externes du corps.

Antiviral : molécule permettant de diminuer l’activité d’un virus et donc de freiner une infection.

Bactéricide : substance qui tue les bactéries. C’est un type d’antimicrobien.

Bactérie : micro-organisme unicellulaire sans noyau. La plupart des bactéries sont bénéfiques pour l’organisme, mais il existe des espèces pathogènes à l’origine de maladies infectieuses comme le choléra ou la tuberculose.

Contagion : transmission d’une maladie de façon directe ou indirecte.

Désinfectant : produit chimique qui tue ou inactive des micro-organismes comme les bactéries ou les virus, sur des surfaces inertes.

Epidémie : propagation rapide d’une maladie infectieuse contagieuse en un lieu et un moment donnés.

Grippe : maladie infectieuse contagieuse causée par trois virus dits influenza. Cette maladie se traduit chez l’être humain par un ensemble de signes comme la fièvre, la toux, un affaiblissement ou encore des douleurs musculaires.

Grippe aviaire/peste aviaire : maladie virale proche de la grippe qui infecte les oiseaux. Cette affection est difficilement transmissible à l’homme.

Grippe porcine : maladie infectieuse contagieuse provoquée par un des multiples types de virus grippal porcin.  Cette maladie d’origine virale s’attaque aux voix respiratoires (nez, larynx, poumons…). Les symptômes sont les mêmes que ceux de la grippe saisonnière.

Grippe saisonnière : grippe humaine circulant entre l’hémisphère Nord et l’hémisphère Sud, avec un pic épidémique en hiver. Une grande partie de la population est immunisée ou s’immunise contre ce type de grippe.

Incubation : période de développement embryonnaire ou de multiplication d’entités biologiques vivantes.

Maladie : altération de la santé d’un organisme vivant, animal ou végétal.

Maladie infectieuse : maladie provoquée par la transmission d’un micro-organisme tel qu’un virus, un parasite ou une bactérie.

Mutation : altération du matériel génétique (ADN ou ARN) d’une cellule.

Pandémie : épidémie touchant une proportion exceptionnellement importante de la population et présente sur une large zone géographique.

Pathogène : agent biologique pouvant être des virus, des bactéries ou des parasites, responsables d’une maladie infectieuse.

Système immunitaire : système de défense contre les maladies qui agit en chassant les virus, bactéries et autres parasites.

Tamiflu : inhibiteur de la protéine neuraminidase utilisé dans le traitement des symptômes de la grippe.

Vaccin : introduction d’un agent extérieur dans un organisme vivant afin de créer une réaction immunitaire positive contre une maladie infectieuse. Il s’agit de stimuler les défenses naturelles de l’organisme.

Virulence : désigne le caractère pathogène, nocif et violent d’un micro-organisme tel qu’un virus, une bactérie ou un parasite.

Virus : parasite intracellulaire se servant d’une cellule hôte pour se multiplier.

Des personnes « à risque »

La grippe A, comme la grippe saisonnière, est très contagieuse. Mais contrairement à cette dernière qui est particulièrement nuisible chez les jeunes enfants et les personnes âgées (de plus de 65 ans), la grippe A touche davantage les jeunes (hommes et femmes), entre 10 et 45 ans environ. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), les personnes les plus susceptibles de contracter le virus sont celles souffrant de pneumonie, diabète, maladies cardiaques ou tuberculose. De même, les femmes enceintes font partie des personnes dites « à risque ». Le journal brésilien Estado de Sao Paulo révélait au mois de juillet dernier (au milieu de l’hiver à cette période de l’année en Amérique du Sud) que les jeunes de 20 à 29 ans étaient de loin les plus touchés (336 cas sur 694 cas), avec un pic se situant vers l’âge de 27 ans. Puis viennent les jeunes de 10 à 19 ans (avec 140 cas).

Une diffusion rapide

Le virus de la grippe A se transmet d’homme à homme de manière relativement « facile » et surtout très rapide. C’est pourquoi il est important de respecter la période d’incubation, qui est de sept jours, période durant laquelle il faut entrer le moins possible en contact avec d’autres personnes pour éviter de les contaminer. Le niveau de pandémie ayant été déclaré, cela signifie que la grippe A représente une réelle menace, et ce à l’échelle mondiale. De plus, il a été prouvé qu’un temps froid et sec augmentait la survie du virus de 90 % et sa transmission de 50 %. Toutefois, il est inutile de céder à la panique. Si une personne pense être touchée par le virus, elle doit consulter son médecin traitant qui l’examinera et lui prescrira, si nécessaire, le traitement le plus approprié.

Des mesures adaptées

Le 3 juillet dernier, le ministère du Travail publiait un rapport permettant aux entreprises françaises de faire face au risque de pandémie à travers la distribution de médicaments antiviraux, l’achat de masques et de solution hydro-alcoolique, la réduction des déplacements à l’étranger… Cela a pour but principal de maintenir l’économie du pays, d’éviter qu’elle ralentisse ou même qu’elle stoppe. Parallèlement, les chercheurs travaillent toujours sur le vaccin qui permettrait de stopper et de guérir la maladie. Ceux-ci devraient être prêts à l’automne.

It’s been a busy day in the discovery department!

Reading blog postings by three amazing young women – Naomi and Lisa and Amy – and marveling at who they have discovered themselves to be!  Wow… in such a short period of time, their lives have exploded with their own genius.  Does it get any better than that?

Watching a great tv show as a world-renowned chef in NYC sniffs his way through a supply of white truffles. For me, it was less about the truffles and more about the expression on his face… the euphoria and sheer delight of his sensory array lighting up with the magic of it all!  As I watched him, I realized that my own sensory array is lit up by the thought of manifesting something… anything! – a rock, an apple, a leaf… in the palm of my hand.  Like he knows white truffles are possible for his dinner menu, I know manifesting something from nothing, in the palm of my hand, is possible for my life menu.  It’s just a matter of… of…. not quite sure what!  And I know it will be.

I read the postings on the WGGG – from Sarah and Lisa and others – and  feel such hope for us all.  I watch an unfurling of awareness and awakened presence that vibrates with life!  And I know that it will only grow and spread, given the power of contagion of an awakened collective.  And this group IS an awakened collective!

My conversations and thoughts have been filled with the awareness that December 21, 2012 is approaching.  I’ve been writing about it, sorting through my own thoughts about it, discovering just how potent – and sacred – it can be for the creation of that which sustains and expands life.  As soon as it is done, I will post on my website.

For now… for this moment… I am filled with delight, joy and awe at what becomes possible when women WAKE UP and claim their own lives.  From that, all things will fall into place.
