Hearing “Ma’am” and “Sir” is most common in the Southern United States

Hearing “Ma’am” and “Sir” is most common in the Southern United States, but are still terms of respect no matter where you live.

These titles are particularly used when children are addressing adults, or for younger adults addressing more senior ones. And often men are referred to as “sir.”

We do not particularly enjoy hearing children addressing adults by their first names, but it is matter of personal choice, and you should instruct your children how to address adults in their presence.
