O Converse Chuck Taylor, mais conhecido aqui no Brasil como All Star, faz sucesso há décadas. Não é difícil encontrar gente, por aí, usando. Adultos, crianças e coroas, todos usam.

O tênis se popularizou entre os pretos por causa da prática do basquete, nos EUA. Aqui no Brasil, ficou popular na época dos Bailes Black, nas décadas de 1970 e 1980.

Os Chuck Taylor também são os tênis preferidos dos gangstas da Costa Oeste dos EUA. Não é difícil vê-los nos pés de rappers como Snoop Dogg, The Game, Ice Cube e outros.

Agora uma coisa meio nada a ver, mas que tenho reparado. Os Chuck dos gringos são mais “encorpados”, tem uma silhueta mais bonita e um acabamento melhor.

Peguei duas fotos pra mostrar como os Chucks gringos parecem mais bonitos que os vendidos aqui. Na primeira, Lil Wayne de calça baggy, usando um Chuck cano baixo. Na segunda, Kid Cudi de calça skinny, usando um Chuck cano alto.

(Parece que escolhí de propósito, mas foi coincidência o fato deles estarem com roupas super parecidas. Bem básicas e estaile, por sinal.)

Estos son unos converse alterados por el diseñador Terence Koh, este diseñador lo que quiso hacer fue conservar el mismo estilo de los botines converse pero alterando su textura (quitandosela lo mas posible), tambien utiliza otro tipos de materiales como pieles, para mantener un poco fresca la imagen de estos y el precio a pagar por estas preciosidades es de 150$ dlls. un precio bastante alto pero si eres un muy buen amante de la moda y el estilo, estos son el par de tenis que andas buscando.

I think we all know what Converse are, and thinking about them you probably picture plain black ones with white laces right? But Converse has hugely reinvented themself, and you would be surprised at some styles the come in nowadays!

I went to Schuh’s SS 10 press day today and found way too many shoes to my liking! The press officer was lovely and took my friend and myself through the festival themed showroom, and I can safely say you can find anything you’ll need for next summer in their stores.

The sandals were cute and they had loads of day-to-night styles, as well as some easy styles such as mid-heel sandals, black shoe boots and some fabulous blue brogues which I didn’t get a picture of. It’s safe to say I’ll be renewing my shoe wardrobe next season…

Bride to Be!

Just recently, Converse held an Indie Rock Festival in Seoul’s hip area, Hongdae. It was one of those rainy days when all you wanted to do was stay inside, but no not these fellow youngsters. A line of about 200 people waited in hope of exchanging their old raggedy sneakers for new pairs. For those who gave up earlier on (such as myself), they huddled together in the cozy and artsy fartsy venue inside.

I cautiously stepped (wet stairs!) inside T-Bar, and what did I find? A Mecca for Converse lovers, where one could purchase original and limited shoes all at the low price of 10,000won. Not just for purchase either, there were Converses everywhere…draped on walls, manikins, art installation pieces, hanging from the ceiling, every nook and cranny had some grand eye candy as if a bottle of rainbow spray paint had exploded in someone’s extravagant penthouse.

In one corner of the main floor, aka the ‘튜닝 (Tuning) Space,’ young artists where painting and gluing away as they focused intently on re-designing customer’s shoes with various studs, ribbons, acrylic paint and markers. With shoes as their canvases, no two pairs looked the same. And if desired, you could easily create your own original pair next to their seating area. I had loads of fun doing this, and managed to have time to deck out two pairs, one with skulls, red plaid & studs and another with a simple row of zippers.

The dynamic collection of singers, bands and DJ’s were also next door blasting away drum & bass, electronic, and of course, indie melodies. The atmosphere was mellow and loungy, as if Bob Marley himself was going to show up any minute to relax and toke a few blunts. One other separate room held a uniquely disturbing set of art pieces which can only be described as unveiling of a young child’s twisted madness. Beheaded doll heads hung on picks, furniture and picture frames combined with dark colors that flashed the sign of a Goth’s playhouse gone wrong, perhaps created for the appreciation of the more ‘punk’ target market group. Still, it was definitely not something you saw in everyday Korean art/youth’s culture.

The 2^nd floor officially known as the ‘인디 (Indie) People’s Room’, was where individuals cheerfully laid out their shoes (with that lightly worn appearance for authenticity) for sale. It was a good thing I did get there early, as the sizes available slowly dwindled. I think foreigners would have really had a shopping frenzy though…as the remained large sizes are often tricky to find even in their main stores.

Finally, the opposite room held the manikins that played fashion victim to Converse fabrics and branding. You could also create your own pin as a keepsake for the event. Although I didn’t see a single foreigner, I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time immersing myself with what I would consider avant-garde youngsters in their superlative environment. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but at times, it’s easy to forget that I live halfway across the world from my parents. Or that most of my relatives and good friends live across the span of the Pacific or Atlantic ocean. Plus I’ve always disliked using phones, so using Skype instead kills two birds with one stone.

I still wish my parents would finally give in and get a better webcam, or better yet, get a new computer with a built-in webcam with HD. But otherwise, conversing internationally with anyone, anywhere, anytime (well, as long as they’re online) is one of the most amazing concepts, especially for international students.

It’s actually quite interesting to hear my American classmates express a complete ignorance of Skype, because I guess they’ve never really needed it at all. I don’t know whether to envy them or feel sorry for them. I’ll settle for an in-between.

Earlier this year I travelled to China. I arrived with my own thoughts on what I was going to experience as an American with all the answers. I left two weeks later with questions and excitement about the enormous opportunity in front of Converse.

Converse at our best, is an advocate and catalyst for creativity. Our job is to support and celebrate creativity. It drives how we allocate all of our marketing resources. In China we saw an exciting opportunity to do this. We are part of the music world and we’ve been fortunate to have our shoes worn by incredible artists. We appreciate this more than most people will ever know. We’re compelled to give back to the industry, especially the artist.

In China, we were drawn to the uncorrupted underground indie music scene. It’s thriving inside and outside the major cities and is filled with great bands, energy and an edge that other cities lost long ago. The bands have endless energy but what they lack is support. There is no touring infrastructure or city-to-city caravan of buses and rigs carrying amps and stages. Venues are lacking as are other basics of the industry that we take for granted.

Converse saw an opportunity to assist these bands. We didn’t ask them to star in commercials wearing our shoes or write jingles. We didn’t ask them to sell out. We got to know them and asked what they needed. They told us they had always dreamed on going out on tour to share their music with like-minded kids. Taking it all in, we bought a tour bus and hired a driver. In China, indie music is referred to by so many people as “noise,” that musicians embraced that and proudly say they “make noise.” We loved that idea — and named our venture the “Converse Love Noise” tour. We connected with two bands and created a five-city tour.

Our headliners were PK14, a respected pioneer of the underground scene, and Queen Sea Big Shark, a new generation upstart. Both fans and the curious filled small clubs and street corners and as we rolled into each city we added a local band.  Each night they played to audiences of 200-300 people.

So, what happened along the way? Beyond buying the bus and coordinating the tour, we sent a camera crew on the road to capture the personal stories of each band. The bus went from a blank white vehicle to a colorful mess as the bands and kids along the journey painted every inch. It was covered with art and graffiti and it told a beautiful story.

Our results: We’ve had over three million visits to our website in China; more than 1.8 billion impressions via digital partners, and a print and outdoor campaign.  We edited an hour long documentary that has found audiences worldwide. We increased traffic to our where we distributed more than 100,000 DVDs of the documentary for free. Beyond the business wins, we have learnings that we use daily.

Our team on the ground made friends with the bands. They built a trust and did all they could to provide them with support. They were excited by the magic of what they were involved in. Our Marketing Director in China deserves full credit. She saw the opportunity and persuaded the team to spend some money.

Indie music and originality is the soul of Converse and music is at the forefront of the growing creative youth culture in China where music, art and fashion are all colliding. We saw our consumers everywhere in the product — onstage, in mosh pits, and on the curb. The music scene in China is incubating incredible talent, but it needs support. In a society that views rock music as “noise”, we uncovered the passion of these kids – in their music, with performances that broadened their audience. This platform was the premise of Love Noise. Ultimately, by supporting creativity in China, we have the opportunity to grow together, to add value and influence to this generation of music culture.

If you have not been to China, get there right away. Something special is happening. Take time to get to know the people. Respect the cultural differences and celebrate our similarities. Don’t take anything from China – but do find a way to contribute to advancing the artist community and their cause. Have some fun along the way and make it about them. If you do this, you will build your brand.

Dear Ellen,

It’s day #44.  Forty-four.  For a number of years, going back to middle school, I have considered this to be my unlucky number.  I can’t recall exactly how it started or how I came to feel cursed by these digits, as opposed to seeing them as a sign of good things to come.  But I began seeing this number all the time- most notably, every time I glanced at the face of the clock.  Seriously, every time.  I’d lie in bed, unable to fall asleep, yet afraid to peak at those glowing red numbers on my bedside table, knowing that 4-4 would be staring back at me.  Forty-four was on license plates, televisions, book pages.  I was being haunted by a number.  My mom took notice, too, and jumped on the superstitious bandwagon right alongside me.

More recently, 44 seems to be taking a hiatus from stalking me.  Or, perhaps, I’m simply not paying that much attention…more than likely, the numbers 15 and 38, and all the ones in between, taunted me just as equally as did 44 but those weren’t my “unlucky” numbers so they went unacknowledged by yours truly.

Today, on day #44 of 365, I am doing a “180″.  I have decided that the number 44 is now my good luck charm.  The adoption of this new, “glass is half full” attitude was triggered by two things:

1.) According to Wikipedia- yes, I had to Google it- 44 is a “happy” number.  The mathematical process by which a number is determined to be “happy”- or, conversely, “sad”- is also described but I will spare you here.

2.) I went shopping today and bought my first pair of Converse sneakers since I was ten years old and owned black high-tops splattered with multi-colored neon droplets.  I’ve been eying the row of Converse at DSW for a long time; however, until now, I haven’t been inspired.  It’s a big decision…like choosing a Halloween pumpkin or a Christmas tree…a reflection of one’s personality.  Sitting atop the shelf, between a steel gray pair and a red pair, was a true, sparkling gem.  A 5-carat emerald cut, colorless diamond surrounded by pale topaz and lab-created amethyst.  Silver glittery low-tops with the iconic white rubber toe.

I brought them home, removed the left and then the right from the box, sat back and admired.  Before even slipping my dainty size 10 feet into my sparkly new shoes, my imagination transported me to the Emerald City and I became Dorothy.  Now, if only clicking my rubber soles three times will take me to the Ellen show.  Stranger things have happened…like houses falling on witches…

Quando se segue o “conversando” da Converse Brasil, pensa-se que o perfil seria muito mais dinâmico, muito mais a cara da marca. Mas não é bem isso que acontece.

 A maior parte dos tweets dos últimos dias são relacionados a promoções. E muitas vezes, repetidos, possivelmente para chamar a atenção dos que seguem a marca. Estas não fogem muito do lugar comum; o participante responde a uma enquete e pode ganhar um tênis.

 Esse é o tipo de interação mais comum, não só se tratando do “Conversando”, mas na maioria das marcas. O Manual do Twitter coloca que distribuir brindes é uma das possibilidades de se usar a ferramenta. Mas ao mesmo tempo, ele ressalta que é importante “não usar o twitter como veículo de propaganda tradicional, disseminando apenas links próprios e mensagens comerciais, sem interagir.” Sim, enquetes são uma forma de interação, mas não a única.

 Ao que parece, “conversando” usa a plataforma apenas como uma maneira mais rápida de fazer os seguidores acessarem o blog oficial da Converse, o “Conversation”. Há muitas divulgações de links que levam para as matérias do blog. Essa atitude corresponde exatamente a crítica feita acima pelo Manual.

 “Conversando” tenta ser um twitter ligado a pessoas jovens e modernas, o maior consumidor da marca, mas ainda vai demorar um tempo até atingir esse objetivo. Algumas melhorias são necessárias em relação às atualizações – passar a ser diariamente, coisa que hoje não é. Também deveriam repensar o conteúdo dos tweets. Seria interessante ter mais notícias do universo que a marca está inserida, e não somente links para o blog, ou então retweets de perfis seguidos por ela.

To celebrate the 3rd birthday of Converse Music, I was asked to create a 48-page book for Converse. Presented in a 12 inch sleeve, to replicate the look of an old vinyl, the book highlighted the pick of the promotional activity undertaken by Converse, including sponsorship of the Underage Festival, Field Day, Somerset House Summer Series and their own series of gigs, featuring The Rakes, Good Shoes and The Foals.

And on the technical side of things…, the book is perfect bound, with a matt laminated front cover with a Spot UV logo print.

Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson, have launched their own socially conscious fashion label

Not long ago, ethical fashion had an image problem. No one wanted to wear baggy-bottomed Thai fisherman’s trousers or an ecru smock top. Unflattering and unappealing, eco-fashion was best left to eco-warriors.

But there has been a definite swing over the past year. Ethical consumerism – from buying products made from recycled or renewable sources to supporting companies that adhere to fair trade principles – is on the rise. It is now cool to care.

So cool in fact, that the latest edition of Vogue has devoted 10 pages to ethical clothing. And London Fashion Week, which starts next week, will include an exhibition space dedicated to 13 ethical labels.

But it’s the celebrities behind the movement who are really making a difference. They’ve made ethical consumerism sexy. One is Bono. Last year, along with his wife, Ali Hewson, and designer Rogan Gregory, he launched Edun, a socially conscious fashion label.

Its clothes are made in locally run factories in Africa, South America and India and the company promotes trade rather than aid. The range is brilliantly designed: this autumn there are beautiful Art Nouveau printed silk dresses, elegant tie-neck chiffon blouses, urban skinny jeans and denim trench coats.

This year Bono also launched Project Red, a collaboration between Armani, Amex, Converse, Motorola and Gap. Each brand markets covetable and ecologically sound products under the Red banner; profits are donated to a fund fighting Aids, malaria and TB in Africa.

Project RED’s unofficial face is Scarlett Johansson, who appears in October’s issue of Vogue wearing Armani’s designs for the charity. The actress told the magazine: “We don’t have to live in a teepee and wear a hemp skirt to be conscious about what’s going on. Maybe somebody thinks, ‘It’s cool that she’s wearing the Red T-shirt, I’ll hop over to Gap and pick one up’.”

Gap, which launched the T-shirts in the spring ( parkas, hoodies and jeans will follow) isn’t the only store turning out fashionable and ethically produced clothes. Last week saw the launch of Adili, a website devoted to the top 25 ethical fashion labels, including Ciel, Patagonia, HUG and People Tree, which has a concession in Topshop, Oxford Circus.

People Tree has given the movement a boost with Trudie Styler as its new face. It has designed T-shirts in conjunction with Action Aid; 10 per cent of profits will go to help raise Fair Trade awareness in Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Small, independent fashion labels have also furrowed the green path. Brighton-based Enamore sells everything from pretty hand-made kimono tops to delicate hemp knickers ( far more appealing than they sound).

Chic shoes can be found at ethical boutiques such as Terra Plana, which designs shoes with recycled materials. And rather than squeezing into jeans made from cotton cultivated with pesticides, consumers can now choose brands such as Loomstate, whose eco-friendly designer jeans are sold at Harvey Nichols and Urban Outfitters.

Larger companies are catching on. Timberland, which sells eco-friendly footwear made with vegetable tanned leather and recycled rubber soles, is launching a reforestation project – it will plant one tree for each pair of boots sold.

And Marks & Spencer, which recently commissioned a survey that found that 78 per cent of shoppers wanted to know more about the way products were made, has just launched its own Fair Trade line.

Tesco, meanwhile, is to sell a range of organic clothing designed by Katherine Hamnett, a long-time crusader for ethical fashion.

Of course, it can be argued that eco-fashion is an oxymoron. How can eco-friendliness fit with so ephemeral an industry? The most significant progress should perhaps come from consumers: buying less, and more ethically, could be the most ecologically sound way to shop.

Julian Casablancas is probably best known for his work with the Strokes. In addition to singing and songwriting with the Strokes he has collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age, Eddie Vedder, Lonely Island, Santogold, N.E.R.D., Albert Hammond, Jr., Pharrell, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and more. He has recently finished work on his first solo album “Phrazes for the Young“. Casablancas seems to ooze talent out of his pores. His solo album is a solid listen from start to finish creating memorizing guitar riffs and tap your toes beats. He has been quoted as saying that he wants to present a “series of over-the-top Disney style shows“. If that isn’t enough reason to see him check out some of his work below.
