(190: Cruising in the convertible.) As you might have been able to tell from yesterday’s post

(190: Cruising in the convertible.)

As you might have been able to tell from yesterday’s post, I’m bored. Or burnt out. Either way, I need to shake things up a little so I went searching for prompts to inspire me. This photo is based on the prompt “speed” and I don’t remember where I found the prompt as I tried several different things before settling on this one.

This photo was taken during our sabbatical adventures in 2007 while cruising around in the convertible with the top down on some back roads in Pennsylvania. It reminds me of warm summer days, earthy smells, and the feel of the wind on my face and in my hair.

I played around with the photo in Photoshop, ultimately “posterizing” it. I did several other things but I Photoshop the way I cook: without a recipe. I realize that’s a bad idea to most people as it means I can’t duplicate it. That’s the beauty of it to me — the uniqueness.

I risked my camera more than a few times when we had the convertible. At some point whenever the top was down (and I wasn’t driving), I’d hold the camera up in the air, above windshield level, and just snap away to see what I’d come up with. Most of the time I’d capture the hood of the car, but occasionally I managed to point it straight out and capture some of the sensation of speed (as much as you can in the stillness of a photo).

Back in September we decided that our time with the convertible was over. We traded it in on a new-to-us used car that is more suitable for grandparents and long drives. The convertible was fun, but it had also acquired quite a bit of mileage and some rust from living in an area prone to snow and ice and salted roads. It was time to trade it in while we could still get a decent return on it.

Every now and then, when the weather is nice, I miss the convertible. But I do kind of like the comfort and quietness of our new car when it comes to long car trips. I hope that doesn’t mean I’m getting old…

I have always been in favor of having something above my head. That’s why I don’t understand convertibles; not only is there nothing above your head but also your air conditioner doesn’t really work because natural air keeps blowing in your face. I like my air to come from gas powered engines or a hookers breath.

Celebrities also love roofs, that’s why many of them sell roofs in their spare time. Roofs do so much for us I can totally understand their love of roofs. Roofs cover us and if you think children in China are roofs then roofs are also responsible for most forms of toy production. Celebrities love to stand and be seen and when they stand on a roof more people get to see them and notice how they too have human skin. Roofs are also in many famous movie scenes such as…um…the titanic? Whatever, roofs make famous people more famous and that’s why celebrities try and own as many roofs as possible. It’s a simple algebraic equation; people are only as valuable as the number of roofs they stand on and the amount of money they put in their bank account.

Another great thing about roofs is that roof rhymes with doof, and not very many things rhyme with doof. Celebrities like words that rhyme with doof, I have never been able to figure out why but it has something to do with makeup and not making sense during television interviews.

I also love roofs because if you have one then I know not to make fun of you for being homeless. I am very good at making fun of homeless people; I am so good at making fun of homeless people that they often are unable to think of a witty reply and that has nothing to do with the fact that they don’t have lips.

So I also like roofs famous celebrities, come find me and we’ll pee off of some of our favorite roofs onto the shoulders of homeless families

“Jesus Christ is a name, not a swear word.”

This fat-stacked headline was red-lettered boldly on the back of the semi that I cannot help but assume was trying to introduce me to the aforementioned Christ Himself in person, by way of steamrolling my puny convertible to smithereens as I was being forced onto the California Freeway last week.

Perhaps the publicly reproachful driver felt, as he muttered words of encouragement to himself, foiled in his efforts to separate my soul from my body, that perhaps I was a pro-choice supporter, and he could feel sure that another in The Crusade might tag me later – and I’d plummet downward, instead.

“Jesus! That was close!” I said to my beautiful assistant, Lacey, my passenger.

Although the driver could not hear – he was, by then, far ahead of me, blowing the doors off California’s law against truckers driving faster than 55 mph – it DID give me some satisfaction to say it.

The trucker DOES make a point, however, that I’ll wager he himself is too ignorant to know he’s making.

Words – particularly names – have enormous power.

Take my own. You might as well. There are an awful lot of Elizabeths out there.

So many, in fact, Elizabeth Stone wrote a Lives column in the New York Times Magazine about an online gathering of Elizabeths in May, 1999 – an article which obviously caught my eye – and I, obviously not being shy, wrote the New York Times to tell them, and they, obviously tickled by my response, even published it.*

[READ THE LETTER AT THE END OF THIS POST.]

(So: on my tombstone, or in my obituary, someone PLEASE mention that I was at least ONE time published in The Grey Lady?** Thank you. Much obliged.)

To carry on:

Unlike the many Liz, Lizzie, Bess, Libby, Bitsy, Bette, Betsy (the Elizabeth who birthed me is one), Belle, Beth, Bettina, Eliza, Lisa, Liza, Tibby, and the list goes on ad infinitum, I myself prefer: “Elizabeth,” the anglicized form of the original Hebrew name “Elisheva,” meaning “my G-d is an oath.”

What “my G-d is an oath” means, though, I’m not sure.

People, when I introduce myself, nearly always try to be kind of smooth, and say: “So… do you go by ‘Elizabeth,’ or…” Then they trail off, sort of expecting me to fill in one of the above nicknames.

(Sometimes, though, they just insert the horrid “Liz.” Which is not horrid, of course, on some people. Just horrid on ME.)

Which means I have to jump in quickly with: “Yes, ‘Elizabeth.’ It’s a few more syllables, but I’m worth it.”

(Actually? My good friends, and even my oldest daughter, call me “Tish,” a nickname I got dubbed with by someone whom I love with all my heart – but that’s another story.)

I’d often heard rumors that medics, in efforts to revive someone, will call their name, but I’d dismissed it until I’d reluctantly found myself headed to the Emergency Room with yet ANOTHER concussion (I’ve been told that if I were a pro athlete, I’d be forced into retirement.)

Promptly, and to the extreme embarrassment of everyone – except, of course, me – I dropped like a stone, right at the nurses’ check-in station, galvanizing everyone into action.

Although I recall little of the actual dive downward, I DO remember two things:

A sharp pain in my chest where a cruel nurse helpfully twisted my skin sharply to revive me – which, although it certainly focused my attention, even THAT didn’t pull me out of the fog I was in – until I heard the nurse ask one of my kids: “What’s her name?”

Naturally, in standard kid-fashion, I heard the kids go: “What?”

As if the nurse has asked instead:

“What is the cosine derivative of x minus the square root of pi?”

“Her NAME,” the nurse asked again. “What is her NAME?”

“Oh,” they said. “Elizabeth.”

In their defense, I think they had to stop for a moment and remember my name isn’t actually MOM.

When the nurse started barking “Elizabeth! Elizabeth!” in that demanding sort of way, it really DID pull me back. Sort of the same way your own grownups do when you’re a kid and you get the call from your bed: “Get up! The bus will be here any minute.”

Calling my name brought me back from Neverland in the oddest sort of way that confirmed the rumor: it turned out to be a sort of Dr. Jekyll experiment on my own self that left me with a “Dang! It’s TRUE!” feeling, wondering what ELSE I’d heard that might ALSO be true.

Jesus Christ! There’s a whole world of weirdness out there to discover!

Hopefully, though, I won’t have to get concussed or run over to find them all out.

* Where Everybody Knew My Name

Published: Sunday, May 30, 1999

Elizabeth Stone’s Lives column (May 9) on the on-line gathering of Elizabeths reflected perfectly the trend for small groups to coalesce on the Internet based on hobbies, interests or random commonalities like names. The Internet, vast as it is, seems to spark a small-town quilting-bee longing in many users.

Of course, there was another reason Stone’s column caught my attention. I’m also an Elizabeth. Maybe I’ll send her an E-mail.

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all l

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all looking for creative and cost effective ways to spruce up our table settings and create a look that will impress our guests. When it comes to setting your Thanksgiving table, options for the adventurous host are limitless. What are the hottest trends for you to bring to your table this year? Here are a few ideas that will take your Thanksgiving table from ordinary to extraordinary:

Color, Texture and Mix – Match:

In table linens and accessories, this year we are seeing rich, saturated colours. We are also seeing a lot of texture and the mixing and matching of patterns with solids. There are a lot of options out there to do something warm and inviting.

Color Trends

Warm tones have always been popular for Fall and that continues with some of the biggest trends in colour combinations this year. Some of those include:
- Deep Spice and Aubergine with muted Gold accents – Dark Chocolate with Blues and Gray accents – Olive Green, Aubergine and softer greens as accents – Dark Chocolate, Taupe and Natural

Tabletop Decor

- Use things that you already have in your home – pull out your 3 or 4 of your favourite vases of different heights. Use complementary colors of fresh flowers for a simple and stunning arrangement. Fill three or four vases and/or glass bowls with different colors and sizes of ornaments, fruits, leaves – anything with color and texture that will create visual excitement.

- Your guests are all unique – why not celebrate their individuality? Use different patterns and/or colors of napkin rings that match their unique personalities. Are they simple or sophisticated? Fun or formal? Unpredictable or conservative? Show them you care with a little customization to complement your table linens.

- Candles are always a dramatic and cost effective way to make a statement – use votives at each place setting with a name card and emphasize beautiful table linens for a classy and simple look. Or go more dramatic and cluster your favourite candle sticks of varying heights and looks as a centerpiece. Use colors that complement or match your dishes, glasses and table linens.

- Nothing brings subtle sophistication to your table like a well-selected runner. Use one the length of the table plus 12 inches to hang over the edge (usually a 90″ or longer) as the perfect centerpiece. If you are using a solid tablecloth or placemats, make sure to jazz it up with a festive pattern. If you have a patterned look already, use a vibrant solid runner that picks up on one of the colors in your runner.

- Use 2 napkins instead of one with a napkin ring. With a solid napkin inside, and a more decorative napkin on the outside.

When setting your table, just remember: do what feels right for the mood. A casual gathering calls for a relaxed setting. A formal meal should feel that way at the table. Either way, it doesn’t take much to elevate your in-home dining experience. Replacing an old tablecloth with something fresh an exciting, and adding a few simple table accessories can go a long way to impressing your guests. It’s that time of year when family gatherings abound and everyone spends countless hours congregating around the dinner table. With the hours spent preparing the perfect meal, make sure you don’t forget to finish it off with the perfect setting.

My boss dropped the bomb on me on a Monday (two weeks ago) after a week long business trip in Guam,

My boss dropped the bomb on me on a Monday (two weeks ago) after a week long business trip in Guam, ‘go to Honolulu, Hawaii, now.’ The first reaction in my mind was, ‘Hell yes’. But then I was reminded that I’ll be leaving my wife and young son, home alone, while I’ll be catching rays on the sunny island of Oahu.

As soon as I landed at Honolulu Int’l, my goal was to find the most ‘exciting’ car to rent within budget, a real low budget. Even though my trip entailed tons of long work days, I thought I could at least reward myself with a car worth driving for those extended ‘breaks’ from the office or ‘long’ rides home.

After negotiating with my car rental agent for a Jeep Wrangler, I tripped over the ‘08 Eclipse Spyder GS. The agent asked, ‘Do you like?’ I asked myself, hm…Canyon/Mtn/Coast runs in Hawaii with Jeep or Eclipse? Within seconds, I grabbed the keys to the Eclipse for what would be three days of inglorious driving…

I knew I could count on Gyro to help me find a course worth driving. He pointed me to this site, which maps out the best roads for scenic viewing and twisties.

My first mission:

On the eve of my first night, I found myself in Heaven.

I had no fear of falling rock/debris top down at midnight…

Day 2, I went back for more.

Day 3, even with rain on the horizon, a voice in the back of my head said, ‘drive.’

And the voice kept getting louder…

The course:

…my conclusion – with one hand gripping the top left corner of the windshield and my right hand on 1 o’clock for the most part of the trip, I was in heaven. Tantalus Road and Round Top Drive exceeded my expectations with hairpin turns, breathtaking views, glasstop asphalt, and narrow passages.

Was ist daran so toll?

Ford Mustang Cars

What is your favorite Mustang?

The Mustang is undoubtedly one of the all-time classic motor cars and has earned a special place in automobile history standing alone for the influence and impact it has had on the marketplace. Made available with a wide array of “options”, it could be an economical six-cylinder runabout, or a highly competitive performer on the track, it could be a luxury compact or a high specification mile-eater in the true GT tradition. Today the most famous of all ponycars, the Mustang has become highly prized by collectors and its long-term survival looks assured. This guide celebrates nine Mustangs from 1964 – 1968.

1964½ Mustang Convertible

From the moment of its April 17 1964 introduction at the New York Worlds fair, the Mustang became a standard by which American cars would be judged forever. In the years that followed, sales records were broken and awards for design were given, the Mustang changing the face of the entire automobile industry. By tradition 1964 models normally appeared in September 1963 but as the Mustang was launched mid-year in April, the early cars are referred to as ‘64 1/2s. Total 1964 Mustang production was 121,538 vehicles.

1965 Mustang Coupe

Whichever way you look at it, the ‘65 Coupe looks more expensive than its original stocker price would have us believe and perhaps this is why it was the hottest selling model of the entire range. When the sixteen moth 1965 model year ended, the Mustang had sold just shy of 681,000 units and the pony-car phenomenon was well and truly underway.

1965 Mustang Fastback

Badged the 2+2, the ‘65 Fastback hit the market with a base sticker price of $2,589, although there were enough options to push the price up to nearly $4,000. The 200cid six engine was made standard at the time and cranking out 120 horsepower it gave the 2589lb Mustang a respectable level of performance. Most buyers however chose the optional 289cid V8. In standard form, with two-barrel carburettor, 200bhp was offered, but 225bhp (four barrel) and 271bhp (Hi-Performance) were also available.

1966 Mustang GT Convertible

Reluctant to tamper with success, Ford altered the ‘66 Mustangs only slightly. Exterior changes were limited to a new horizontal-bar grille and a restyled gas cap, while all but the GT, 2+2 and luxury models got a new side scallop with three wind splits. The GT equipment group required a V8 and included fog lamps, front disc brakes, dual exhausts, handling package and GT racing stripes on the sides.

1966 Shelby Mustang GT-350

Having created a car with mass appeal, Ford wanted a performance option for the Mustang and for that they turned to the creator of the AC Cobra, Carroll Shelby, who turned the fastback V8 variant of the first Mustang into the fast and rugged Shelby GT-350.

1966 Mustang Coupe

Sales for 1966 could not match 1965 because of the longer 1965 model year, but taking a comparable 12-month period, 1966 sales were actually 50,000 higher. For 1966 Ford picked up close to half a million hardtop sales along with 70,000 convertibles and 35,000 fastbacks.

1967 Mustang GT Fastback

Ford knew Chevrolet were developing its own ponycar for ‘67, so the Mustang received more extensive changes than it might otherwise have. Styling alterations were obvious yet the flavour of the original was retained. Most noticeable was the larger and more prominent grille and taller separate-element taillights. Setting the headlines though, was the new 390cid four-barrel Thunderbird Special V8 engine option. Rated at 320bhp it offered outstanding acceleration with 0-60mph figures around 7.5 seconds and the standing quarter in 15.5 seconds.

1968 Shelby Mustang GT-500KR

The ‘68 Shelby GT-500KR replaced the GT-500 at mid-year, KR of course stood for “King of the Road”. The difference was that a more powerful 428cid Cobra Jet V8 replaced the standard 428. Conservatively rated at 335 horsepower, it actually pumped out about 400 horses. The GT-500KR was considerably quicker than the GT-500 despite the fact that transmissions and rear end ratios were the same. Tested at the time by a leading car magazine the “King of the Road” turned in the quarter-mile in 14 seconds at 102.7mph (Fastback with manual shift).

1968 ½ Mustang GT/CS

One of the more interesting Mustang offerings in 1968 was the GT/CS. The CS stood for Californian Special and this limited edition model borrowed much of its looks from the mean Shelby GT-350/500s. Features included unique side-striping and side air vents, rear spolier and Shelby-style taillights. A’68 GT/CS could have any engine available in ‘68 Mustangs, including the six-cylinder. An estimated 5,000 Californian Specials were produced, and these are avidly sought by collectors today.

Thank you for reading my guide and I hope you found it interesting!
