Even as users of China-made mobile phones get time till March 31 to upgrade their phones with the special IMEI number-generating software or face action, new handsets made in our neighbouring country have almost disappeared from major electronic markets like the Alfa stores and Heera Panna.

A growing misuse of mobile phones by anti-national elements has led the Department of Telecommunications to direct all operators to disconnect handsets without the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, a unique 14-digit number assigned to each handset that helps in tracking its user.

Penalty

After disconnecting handsets without IMEI numbers, operators will have to submit a compliance report by April 15, failing which a penalty could be imposed.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) hopes that the issue will be sorted out as soon as the software developed by COAI members generates IMEI numbers for these handsets.

“Users of China-made handsets will have to get the software loaded. This will generate an IMEI code and identify users,” said COAI director general T V Ramachandran.

Nadeem Akhtar, a mobile phone dealer at Heera Panna, said, “Eighty per cent of sellers at genuine electronic markets have pulled out stocks.” Sellers believe that the new software  is not yet foolproof. “The police will grill us if we sell these handsets,” said Nawaz Mallik, another mobile phone seller. COAI, however, insists that the software when uploaded onto the handsets will provide the device with a unique IMEI number.

This app is absolutely wonderful! I have used this app so many times and each time, I am so glad I have it. Some of the features on this app include a currency converting calculator, unit convertors, a clinometer (like spirit levels), a tip calculator, loan calculator, “days until” and more!

The unit convertor is one of my favorite functions. As an Indian going to college in the US, I still think of units in terms of celsius, kilograms and kilometers. While I know most phones have unit convertors, this one is fast and very easy to use. It is classified into the different types of measurements like area, length, pressure etc. and you can choose from these to find the most accurate unit. Going over all the possible units, I am pretty sure that it surpasses the capability of phones that have the unit convertors pre-programmed.

The currency convertor is also great because it updates it the moment you open up the function and makes it faster and easier to find how much Rs.10,000 is equal to in US dollars, which is $215 approximately, by the way. However, a warning in advance, the currency convertor can only be applied to India, US, Europe, Canada, England, Japan, Mexico, China, Australia, Switzerland and South Korea. AppBox also has a pro version but I am not sure if that has more countries under the currency convertor.

Although it is easy to use the pre-existing calculator for tips, this function is easier because all you have to do is input your final bill amount and it will calculate the tip, in accordance with you pre-programmed preferences. You can also quickly input the number of people splitting the bill to calculate how much each person owes and how much tip they need to add. All just by putting in the bill amount- pretty cool! I find it especially useful after a great late night meal when everyone is way too tired to even think.

There are more functions in AppBox and you can definitely spend time checking it out. I have the free version but I have put in a picture of the pro version so that you know exactly what you can get from the app. AppBox Pro costs 99 cents and you can get a detailed review of it here before you go out and buy it.

Heute habe ich mich damit beschäftigt VMWare Maschinen zu CitrixXen Maschinen zu konvertieren. Klingt kompliziert, ist im Grunde ganz einfach:

1. CitrixXen Convertor Downloaden
2. VMWare Festplatte auswählen
3. Zielverzeichniswählen
4. und fertig!

Der Convertor bietet auch noch die Funktionen  einen ganzen Rechner direkt auf den Server zu konvertieren. Diese Methode ist meiner Meinung nach die einfachste einen echten PC bzw. eine VMWare, VHD (Virtual PC von Microsoft) oder OVF  Datei zu einer XVA-Datie bzw. zu einem virtuellen Rechner zu konvertieren. Das einzige Problem was ich bissher habe ist, dass ich nur 64-Bit fähige Linux Rechner konvertieren kann, aber keine welche mit 32-Bit laufen, da man Linux Rechner anscheinend nur mit dem Convertor auf der InstallationsCD konvertieren kann, welche aber einen 64-Bit Prozessor braucht.

Ob es vllt. mölgich ist dieses Problem mit speziellen Start-Parametern zu umgehen muss ich mir noch genauer anschauen.

A recurring problem among those of us keen to include video footage in our websites/blogs is that of video file format/program incompatibility. Namely, Microsoft not talking to Apple and vice-versa.

Most, if not all, compact digital cameras have a basic video feature that records in Apple’s .mov format – and if you’ve ever tried to view or edit the video in Microsoft’s Windows Media Player or Movie Maker you’ll hit the Microsoft/Apple brick wall in the shape of "the selected file has an extension that is not recognised …"

Of course, anyone willing to fork out for the QuickTime Pro upgrade is offered the opportunity to save in alternative file formats, including those that are WMP/WMM compatible,  however, who wants to go that extra (expensive) mile when you are only an occasional Spielberg wannabe?

Help is at hand – QuickMediaConvertor is a free program (User Review and Download Link here) that converts .mov files to .avi (and many other formats). The interface is intuitive (thankfully, the geek settings are off by default) and it is also capable of batch conversions. Reassuringly, the user reviews are good and Tucows have awarded it the maximum 5 cows rating (http://www.tucows.com/preview/521321).

The only minor issue I came across whilst installing the program was that during the setup process it asks for the preferred language (English of course). However, when you run the program for the first time everything is in French. Having thought I’d made the wrong choice I uninstalled and repeated the process making sure English was selected. Same thing happened.

This appears to be the default user interface language and you will have to visit the Language option in the top menu bar to select English. Thankfully it appears to remember this for subsequent visits.

Other than that, using the program is relatively painless – just make sure you specify (again via the top menu bar) the location you wish to place the converted file(s) before starting.

An example of QuickmediaConvertor in action – I used a sample 35MB digital camera .MOV file and converted it to a 5MB .AVI without any discernable loss in quality. It also played without mishap in Windows Media Player, and Windows Movie Maker accepted it without question.

In the past I’d uploaded some fairly big (100+MB) .MOV files to YouTube, letting them do the conversion work. A couple of things; you cannot make edits to the .MOV file unless you have other (usually costly) software to hand and it’s a lengthy process waiting for YouTube to deal with such large files.

Having tried one or two other popular free conversion programs without much (and in some cases, any) success finding QuickMediaConvertor was a godsend.

Convertbot is a high-tech unit conversion ‘robot’ for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Convertbot has an amazing UI, it is designed beautifully and it really gives you that
high-tech gadget feeling. You rotate the wheel to choose the category you want to convert,
then tap on it; now you can select the unit etc. Lovely robotic sounds are produced with each tap.

Convertbot is unlike other conversion apps not just because of the innovative interface but also because it
can convert combined values for example lets say I’m 164 cm I want to know how tall I am in feet and inches, now
