Dear friends, colleagues, comrades, peace lovers and freedom fighters

Thank you for taking the trouble to follow the link that brought you to this page. Step one of your four-step solidarity mission is complete!

Please take 10 minutes out of your day to do some or all of the following:

1. Donate, donate, donate!

I’m off to Gaza on 5 December and I need your money to buy aid and get it over land to Palestine. Following last year’s horrendous bombardment, many Gazan families are still living in flimsy tents, open to the weather, and are unable to access adequate clean drinking water. The convoy will be focussing primarily on ambulances and medical aid. Please give all you can here.

2. Send messages of solidarity.

You can do this when you donate, or alternatively, add to the comments box here.

3. Subscribe to this blog, and/or my Twitter feed, and forward this link to your friends and colleagues. Alternatively, join my Facebook group and invite your friends to do the same.

The more attention the convoy has while it is travelling, the better chance we have of persuading the Egyptian authorities to let us into Gaza. If they think no-one knows or cares what is happening, they may be tempted to try and keep us out.

Military Convoy Etiquette: Over the past few months of driving along various interstates through Ill

Military Convoy Etiquette:

Over the past few months of driving along various interstates through Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana I’ve come across a few military convoys. Each time the convoys have been led and trailed by a hummer. Inbetween the humvees there have been a numerous trucks: semis carrying tanks, bradley fighting vehicles, and heavy machinery, fuel trucks, personnel carriers, and others. These convoys have also been numerous lengths.

As I’ve been driving I’ve noticed that the front humvee carries a sign stating something to the effect of “convoy following”: in addition the humvee at the end of the convoy carries a sign with something to the effect that it is at the end of the convoy. The real question that came from all of this is that I began to notice a pattern and have not been able to find any answers to my questions anywhere online. I’m hoping someone can answer these questions:

1. Is there some form of standard following-distance rule in the military? It seems that each vehicle in each of the convoys I’ve passed have all been approx. the same distance from one another.

2. Is there a standard speed at which a convoy travels? I assume it’s the max speed that the slowest vehicle can travel…some research has shown that in Ohio the convoy must maintain at least 45mph.

3. Is there some sort of unspoken rule that a civilian vehicle should not (or is not allowed to) enter into a military convoy? No matter the length of the convoys I’ve encountered, from 6 vehicles to 21 vehicles, I have not seen a civilian vehicle (be it a passenger car or semi) enter into the convoy.

If anyone can answer those questions it’d be appreciated, especially my military friends. As I said I can’t find any answers on line and am curious about this, at least perceived, etiquette.

The twenty-sixth of October with kids roamin’ all over.
Main Street was all cluttered with folk.
Comin’ down the street was a royal fleet and the diesel was-a-blowin’ smoke.

Yeah them smokies were holdin’ back the traffic.
They even had a Segway with Paul Blart.
Those Jackson’s were-a-dancin’ for quite a spell.
And they were showin’ an abundance of heart.

“Cause we gotta great big convoy, rockin’ through the night.
Yeah we gotta great big convoy, ain’t she a beautiful sight?
Come on an’ join our convoy, ain’t nothin’ gonna git in our way.
We’re gonna roll this truckin’ convoy, cross the USA.
Convoy.”

Well that’s what it seemed like. Ok. It was just the Annual Dubuque Halloween Parade, but it was a big deal with a lot of big vehicles and Dubuquers made a big whoop-dee-doo over it. And rightfully so. A parade is a show and it takes a lot of work and organization to put on a good show. You can tell that many of the participants put forth a lot of effort and we applaud them.

It was my first time at this annual event and I was impressed. There was fun to be had by all. I would guestimate that there were probably around 3000 people taking part and observing from the sidelines. The weather stayed very cooperative as the temperature hovered around a comfortable mark – even after the sun went down it.

There were marching bands, plenty of big vehicles, some very elaborate floats, plenty of candy for the cherubs, cute costumes worn by even cuter kids (the Little Fry Daycare) had some of the best kid costumes – check out the TH Online for more photos. They didn’t have a bear in the air, but there was a gorilla on a bike. And my personal favorite was the 50 or 60 dancing Michael Jacksons from Studio 5678. They were dancing before the parade started and they continued dancing for the entire route. I’ll bet they were plumb tuckered out by the time it was all over — but they put on a great show and that’s what this parade was all about!!! (You can check out the dancing MJ’s in the video of the parade below.)

Runde Auto Group had a strong showing. They entered the Split Decision Chevy 4500 truck with it’s infamous custom paint job. They also had one of the Runde golf carts and the Runde Community Service truck. The folks from Runde handed out bags full of Tootsie Rolls and about 1500 mini Nerf-like footballs.

Jeff Kueter

Jeff “Lenny” Kueter of Runde Chevrolet drove the Split Decision diesel and had a good time. He got carried away and at one point started throwing the mini football out of the truck’s driver side window. He had to be reminded that the parade organizers now frown on throwing items into the crowd. This was the 2nd time Jeff participated in the parade as he also drove a vehicle for Runde in 2008’s parade down Main Street. Jeff commented just before the parade: “It’s good that a lot of people take part in this. When people put on a big event like this for kids of all ages, it shows that they really care about this community. Have you seen all they people along the street? There must be thousands of ‘em.”

Hannah, Jeff & Logan

While I was walking along the parade route, I ran into Hannah, Jeff, and Logan Heiar of Dubuque. They have purchased 4 vehicles from Runde’s over the past few years and they had some kind words to say about Runde’s (check out the video below to find out what they said). Their son, Logan, who is beyond cute, was born a year ago and he will be getting either a baby brother or a baby sister in a few more months. We wish the Heiar Family well. You can bet that they’ll be back again next year and so will Runde Auto Group as we look forward to participating in this annual tradition.

Below is the video we shot of the event. Check it out and if you weren’t able to attend the parade this year, there’s always 2010. The more, the merrier.

I don’t know what it is with people in America.. But, it seems every one of you fat dumbshits

I don’t know what it is with people in America.. But, it seems every one of you fat dumbshits can’t drive worth a flying fuck. I normally don’t care too much for people driving over the speed limit, but when you go flying passed someone as if they were standing still, don’t you feel that is a bit too fast? How about when you suddenly slam on your brakes and take 5 minutes to make a right turn? Or, you drive down the road at 3a.m. with your parking lights on?

After driving to work today for a meeting, I realized not only is the American full of idiots, but these idiots can’t even drive, especially the ones in SUV’s. On my way to my work, I had to take the freeway. Upon turning onto the on-ramp, I had a guy in a white Ford Explorer come flying up on my ass, mind you, I’m already doing about 65mph by the time I’m 3/4 finished with the on-ramp. As soon as this guy gets up on me, he flashes hi-beams and is honking.

Yo, asshole. You’re already doing 65mph and there is no traffic, we are going 5mph faster than the rest of the people, get the fuck off my ass. Nope, soon as he gets the chance too, he swings all the way over and coasts besides me so I can’t get over. Pointing and laughing at me. I tried to slow down, but he did the same. So, I downshifted to 3rd gear and floored it. Knowing his Explorer was faster than mine, I took my disadvantage to an advantaged. As he crept passed me, I stomped on my break and swung the nose of my car into the tail of his.

I think he must have flipped and rolled 14 times before coming to a rest on the roof. What was even funnier, he tried crawling out the SUV and got ran over by a 18-wheeler. Best thing ever.

As I continued on my way to work, I thought about of a way to deal with this numb skull dipshits. I came up with a very great solution for both the American public and the U.S. Government/Allied Forces over in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Instead of sending our soldiers on convoys and almost for certain making them targets for I.E.D.’s, why don’t we take some beat to shit cars, disguise them as military vehicles and send them ahead of the troops to take out any I.E.D.’s. I think it’d be a fantastic thing.

Think about it, the roads will be so much better, more soldiers will keep their body parts and their lives. We won’t lose any military vehicles, only some clonkers. What also great is, the terrorist will be helping us out with this problem. They’ll also be wasting their explosives. I think it’s a perfect idea.

So perfect, I’m gonna write Obama about this. I know he’ll accept. If not, then is one of the dumbest mother fuckers ever. While we’re sending those idiots, why don’t we send those cock suckers from Best Buy as well?

Yemen and Saudi officials stopped a UN aid shipment destined for refugees from fighting between Yemen troops and Shiite rebels on Saturday, unable to agree on border procedures.

Three trucks laden with tents, mattresses, soap and other necessities were halted by a dispute over how to transfer the goods from Saudi trucks to Yemeni trucks at the border.

This delayed for at least another day the delivery of much-needed humanitarian supplies for 3,000 hard-struck Yemenis sandwiched between the Saudi border and the centre of fighting further in to Saada province.

The aborted delivery, witnessed by journalists traveling with the convoy, underscored how local distrust and bureaucratic inertia can prolong the suffering of people who have lost homes and face food shortages in war-torn northwest Yemen.

Overall an estimated 55,000 or more Yemenis have been displaced since the fighting erupted on August 11 between the Shiite Muslim Zaidis, also known as the Huthis, and the government of the Sunni-dominated state.

Zaidi leader Malek al-Huthi, said on Saturday he is ready to work with government opposition leaders to halt the fighting, which has left an unknown number of people dead on both sides.

“We are ready for dialogue, to respond positively to all national initiatives and to stand alongside all honourable people wanting to save the country from corruption and injustice,” Huthi said in a statement.

But an official of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees spent 12 hours at Alb’s border outpost negotiating in vain with officials on both sides to get the goods into the hands of a Yemeni NGOs which would distribute them.

“I am still hopeful we can deliver these goods today,” UNHCR protection officer Sultan Khilji said hours into the ordeal Saturday.

The UNHCR had held the goods at Abha in southern Saudi Arabia for weeks awaiting a break in the fighting and security and transit guarantees before sending it across the border.

The dire situation was getting progressively worse in the region of steep, rugged mountains dotted with great boulders.

Border traffic had nearly dried up. When on a normal day hundreds of vehicle passed through here, only a couple dozen were seen Saturday.

Yemeni traders said goods of all types, especially food, were in short supply and that they were taking risks to ferry staples like sugar and bottled water from the Saudi side.

As many as 3,000 refugees were camped along the road to Mandaba, five kilometres (three miles) inside the border, according to Khilji, with the fighting reportedly getting closer.

After several postponements, clearance for the convoy finally came for Saturday. Amid an apparent lull in the fighting, three tractor trailers headed off laden with 60,000 dollars (40,800 euros) worth of necessities, including 200 tents to be used in a new refugee camp about two kilometres inside the border.

But an agreement about whose drivers and whose trucks could cross to deliver the goods fell apart, and the trucks sat an entire day on the Saudi side until the post closed at 5:00 pm (1400 GMT).

Khilji, a Pakistani veteran of the UN body, struggled hard to convince officials to just let the drivers of the Saudi trucks drop the goods at the Yemen customs depot.

“We are the UNHCR. We aren?t going to try to stay over there,” he said.

As officials stalled on both sides of the border, efforts were made to contact higher-ups — a prince on the Saudi side and a deputy minister in Yemen. But all was to no avail — leaving the refugees to cling to their hope for assistance yet another day.

“It is 100 percent sure the trucks will go tomorrow, insh?allah” — “God willing,” said a border official.

Hard to believe, but we got another mission to return to our former camp. We rolled through the capital city with very little traffic this morning, other than the typical herd of sheep, horse and donkey carts mixed in with cars and trucks swerving potholes on their way to work. It’s truly a dichotomy to see technology mixed in with primitive modes of transportation. Can you imagine in the United States if farmers herded their livestock through major cities and dozens of horse and donkey carts would slow down traffic as they gallop on their merry way. But the real kicker is when people park their cars on the main highway (not on the side or berm) causing traffic to bottleneck and go around them. I suppose at one time when Henry Ford introduced the Model T to America, such was the case. Even now you can still observe this in Pennsylvania where the horse and buggy is still the primary means of travel for the Amish and blends in with the automobiles on the highway.

Unaware to us, twenty minutes after we passed through the heart of the city, a suicide bomber in a SUV struck near the Indian Embassy. Seventeen civilians were killed and over 80 people were injured. I recall reading India just pledged $1.2 billion in assistance to Afghanistan. Afghanistan and India suspect Pakistan intelligence played a role, even though the Taliban has publicly claimed responsibility for the bombing.

New overhang at ANA Land

While at the former camp, I had a chance to inspect some of my special projects initiated before coming to this camp. The overhang for the vehicles was finished. I envisioned it a little big bigger, but somewhere in the translation or my metric calculations, it was downsized. It looked pretty sturdy and hope it will withstand the falling

I also used this opportunity to visit MSG Abdullah’s Miracle Gro garden. Unfortunately MSG Abdullah was out of the office, so I toured the garden on my own. I was surprised how much the rose bushes have grown and how large the flowers were. A few months ago, these plants were floundering until the Miracle Gro was mixed with

My trip wouldn’t be complete unless I stopped to say hello to Justice and Liberty. As usual, they were taking their mid-afternoon nap. They looked healthy and it’s obvious the soldiers are still accidentally dropping food from their plates into their awaiting mouths. It must be those slippery plates.

Due to traffic, my team took an alternate route back to the camp. It wasn’t as desolate as the “Old Testament” road we had taken on a previous occasion. Instead this road cut through a middle class neighborhood of shops and small industry. In the middle of the road, women dressed in burqas begged for money. Their child would lie down on a blanket and an occasional car would stop and toss them some coins. I have seen this before, but today there were 5 different women on the same road begging for donations.

We arrived back at camp before sundown. The DFAC was having meatloaf for dinner. It paled in comparison to the home-made meatloaf that my mother makes. Usually at this time, I would be in Erie, Pennsylvania fishing for steelhead trout with my family. It’s been 5 months, but I finally made contact with my parents on the phone (tried many times but always missed them and got voicemail); we mostly communicate via e-mail and through the blog. My mother informed me she is the only one catching fish. My father will say she is only catching the dumb ones. I hope to resume this family fishing trip tradition next year when I return.

Blue Rose Records / New West Records An Kris Kristofferson scheiden sich die Geister: Für die einen

Blue Rose Records / New West Records

Fantastisch. Ein wenig wie Naked Willie von Willie Nelson.

After a tiring open house, I decided to follow my uncles and cousin for a trip into Johor. The open house was a success as everybody came except for my late uncle who passed away on Friday afternoon. We could not cancel our event as we were half-prepared for it.

I invited my secondary school classmates

Yingbao and Gek Cheng were the first ones to arrive

My Medical Response Force (MRF) buddies never fail to attend. Just that we are missing Luigi, who went back to the Philippines.

Faizal came not long after

My relatives then started streaming in after they had prayers for my late uncle in Woodlands. My INSEAD Multimedia colleagues all came too.

We all drove to Pontian the next day to visit my grandaunts and granduncles. Four vehicles make up the convoy. My uncle’s FIAT, younger uncle’s SUBARU and both my cousin’s and our Hondas. Driving in Johor is ok as there were not as many users as expected. The tough part is avoiding potholes while driving on the side roads.

Uncle Ramdan resting upon arrival of the second house in Pontian

Went to Giant and for once, I was able to visualise the path to overtake the heavy traffic when our car was losing sight of the convoy. If you have watched ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’, you will know what I mean.

Got lost after pumping petrol at SHELL and soon, we were on our way back home.

I had heard that a crepe place had opened up on Convoy St and was instantly intrigued. There’s

I had heard that a crepe place had opened up on Convoy St and was instantly intrigued. There’s one in Poway, but it’s pretty expensive by my standards (which means I don’t want to pay more than $5 for something I can make at home).

Crepe World is in the O’briens shopping center with Crab Hut and Yogurt World, next to a donut shop and where that sticker booth place used to be. It’s the same owners as Yogurt World, so don’t feel like you’re betraying one dessert stop for another. No guilt!

The crepes are huge and tasty, not expensive, and come with practically infinite options. You can get it plain, buttered, with Nutella or custard or ice cream, with fruit, with red beans, etc. The edges are crispy but the crepe itself has a slight chew. Granted, these are not French crepes; they are more like Japanese crepes. I can’t explain the difference except to compare it to Asian frozen yogurt vs. regular frozen yogurt.

We got a nutella and banana crepe ($4) and a custard and strawberry crepe ($4). T’s crepe had more nutella than mine had custard but they were both good. We had issues eating them from the cone they were wrapped in, so we had to unwrap them and then eat them. No big deal.

Yelp has given them pretty poor reviews and I’m not sure why. Maybe I’m not so picky when it comes to a cheap crepe that I don’t have to make?Maybe other people are okay with paying twice as much for a smaller Fench crepe? Whatever the reason, we liked our crepes and I’m glad we have a dessert option for when it’s too cold for frozen yogurt. You can even add mochi balls!

This following video resulted from a Mom in Alabama asking her high school son to help with a commercial for the Tea Party she was involved in organizing. Boy, does it slam the message home. Very impressive.
Here is her note:

“I asked Justin if he could help me make a commercial for my group’s Tea Party. He sat down at the laptop for about an hour, and then brought this to me and asked, ‘is this okay, Mom?’ After I finished watching it, my stomach was in my throat.

Everyone that I have sent it to has really enjoyed it, so I wanted my friends to see it. I am so proud!”
A very powerful video…turn up the sound & sit back…!!!

More Delaware Humor from my site HumorVolcano.com

excerpt:

SMYRNA, DE – As the “Mother-of-all-recessions” dragged toward the fall of 2009, the State of Delaware, faced with a severe budget shortfall despite already having chainsawed services to the bone, on Friday did the previously unthinkable: passed a law instituting a sales tax on all goods and services in the state. First State residents, well known to be an ornery, rebellious bunch, responded by piling into their jacked-up, shotgun-toting pickup trucks and tricked-out tractors and storming out of the state.

In a thundering, honking, cursing caravan 15 vehicles long, on Sunday afternoon all 27 Delaware residents showed their vehement displeasure at the new tax by fleeing the state. Of course, the renegade convoy was held up for two hours in line at the I-95 toll plaza, then required to fork over a “scandalous amount” one last time on their way out. Plus extra for the outhouse trailers.

Last night, I walked into my room, and I startled a man lying on the empty bed on the other side of the room. Startled isn’t quite the right word. He nearly hit the ceiling from the lying-down position.

So, yes, I now have a roommate. He’s a lawyer, which means I need to stop breaking the law immediately.

I’ve been pretty lucky so far this deployment. I was without a roommate for two full months, and I only have four left to go. Although I miss having the room to myself, it’s good to have someone to talk to in the evenings. Still, there’s something to be said about not worrying about whether you are disturbing someone when you stay up much later than usual.

Change of subject…

I forgot to share this the other day… a couple of pictures from my convoy when I visited my friend in the hospital.
