Wine coolers have, up until now, been freestanding, partly integrated into cabinetry or part of a fridge freezer. U-Line, however, are quite keen to change that, with its fully integrated wine coolers.

Pop-up sockets are nothing new but I thought this dinky bank deserved a mention. New from S-Box, it works on the same counter-balance principle as its other boxes for knives, speakers and so on, plus it’s super compact!

Finally, back to Caple, who deserve a second mention for its lift-up TV, that can be built-in right next to your ovens. Never miss a TV show again, or follow your favourite chef as you cook. Genius!

Over the weekend my dad cut them to fit, the hob is in it just needs connecting. Unfortunately at about 7pm Sunday night we found out that the tap thread connector is too short for the 40mm worktop… gutted!

Plumber no. 2 and my lodger better be careful! They are the two most expensive things in the house.

Dad fitted the cooker hood too, which again caused a bit of a headache as the ducting wasn’t long enough and it took a while to source another bit of ducting that wasn’t several meters in length (we only need 350mm). Plus where I bought the original 125mm ducting from only did a 100mm vent. Screwfix saved the day.

I bought a mitre saw for the coving and architrave, but didn’t have a 14mm spanner so couldn’t assemble it. I bought the spanner today, so I can set it up tonight and have a play. Once I’ve gotten to grips with it, it will make cutting the coving and architrave a lot quicker.

I bought a tile cutter too. I’m ready to start tiling the kitchen floor. I just need to set aside a LOT of time. The setting out will need to done carefully, due to the room stepping in part way up. As the room is long and narrow I’ll be doing a brick pattern to trick the eye.

The floorboards are giving me grief. Victorian houses had a carpet/rug in the middle of the floor, with a black/brown edging painted in bitumen/tar. This gunge clogs up the sanding belts in no time, and melts with the heat so then smears over other floorboards.

Time to try some chemicals, rags and a scraper… I’ll experiment with white spirit tonight, if that doesn’t work I’ll try turpentine and then some sort of stripper. Petrol is another suggestion but I don’t really like the thought of that.

The particular PCB in question which was for model number APP2420 also fitted 11 other models as well. Also, a little bit of DIY know-how was required to fit this unit as soldering of wires was also required. Also, if you are doing this yourself please don’t forget to isolate the power supply!

After fitting the new PCB the cooker hood was back up and fully functional at a far reduced cost to what a new appliance would have been. A simple and relatively low cost fix for anyone who is a DIY person and would rather repair than replace.

Cooker hood carbon filters come in various shapes and sizes for many different brand cooker hoods such as Ignis, AEG, Beko and Electrolux just to mention a few. They vary from being round like the Whirlpool Cooker Hood Carbon Filter D034 to square ones supplied as a pack of 2 for Cooker hoods like the Ariston model AGS. These are very high quality products and should always be used here possible but can sometimes be a bit on the pricey side.

Another excellent solution for those of us who have older cooker hoods is the Universal Cooker Hood Carbon Filter, these can be used in any cooker hood that recirculates air and that the dimensions are suitable for, you just need to get your tape measure and check before ordering. They can be simply cut of folded to fit and if it is not quite big enough for your cooker hood, just insert 2 of them. Also, these can be purchased as a set containing a Carbon Filter and Grease Filter for those of us who also require both of these items. Likewise, if you just require a Cooker Hood Grease Filter then this can also be purchased separately, just remember to check your dimensions to make sure this will be suitable for you. These are a low cost and effective replacement and suit most cooker hoods.

To keep your cooker hood in perfect working order make sure to replace these items regularly as dirty filters will lead to cooker hood that is simply not working correctly and is invariably useless at doing what it was designed for.

No, it wasn’t too bad, especially with the trusty CSI gloves… and I got a bit of momentum going and cleaned all the kitchen cupboard doors at the same time.

No, nobody but me will notice.  But even though nobody can see it, at least my invisible halo will be shining brightly today.

“Since I moved house last year I’ve been planning an overhaul of the kitchen… Sadly, it was all in my head as my husband had made me promise not to spend any more money! Then the great washing machine disaster of 2010 happened and I turned a negative into a positive.

Telling him sweetly not to blame himself, plumbing skills aren’t the be all and end all, I quietly remarked ‘well, now that the floor’s ruined we might as well rip it up and while we’re at it, the rest of the room looks a bit jaded…’ and I finally got to make my dreams for a new kitchen a reality.

I see lots of fabulous kitchens but the main inspiration for my new scheme was this painted design from Roundhouse. We’re featuring it in Beautiful Kitchens later this year and when I saw it I simply said ‘That’s my kitchen!’ I just love everything about it. The chic, dark and pale grey units in stunning Farrow & Ball shades, the stark white worktops and the cool mirrored splashbacks.

Here’s how to get this look in an open-plan kitchen-diner.

1) Choose a statement kitchen wallpaper to define the kitchen area – if you get tired of it after a few years, you can always change the design to create a dramatic new look.

2) Pick out a colour from the wallpaper and add matching accessories like linens and kitchenware.

3) Go for minimalist dining furniture so the wallpaper takes centre stage. I love these Kartell Louis Ghost chairs by Philippe Stark, they’re perfect for this contemporary cool kitchen.
