THE COLLECTION THUS FAR

You will surmise from this series that I am not a technician, a builder, a designer, an architect or any of the other professionals who might qualify me to speak with authority on these subjects. I am merely telling you what is in my head. I assume I am either pretty right or simply off the mark. All I know is that I have believed in car-free human settlements for five decades. And I can see what I am talking about though I cannot draw it.

In an early issue of Mother Earth News — in the 60s I think — I read a wonderful notion of how space could be both heated and ventilated. It consisted of nothing more than a crawlspace that would exist underneath the floor, with vents placed around the sides of the room and a heating element in the center of the room. Somehow this led t a cooling off when cool was needed and a sensible way of warming things up when warmth was required.

I offer this merely to suggest that a component of my proposed settlements would be crawlspace platforms. I have imagined spaces within the skeleton frame. These are areas large enough to create residences and other things within. The contents of spaces would include MODULES — the actual containers of rooms and other interior areas and SMALL COURTS or COVERED AREAS or OUTBUILDINGS. Beneath the contents of spaces I would propose that there be standardized CRAWLSPACES which would be the means of much of the heating and ventilation. They would be strong enough to support modules and with modules in place they would be calibrated in such a way that the floors of modules would have vents that could suck up cold or warm air depending on the need.

A caveat: Even if it could be shown that some version of a crawlspace would be less valuable than something else, I would argue that the heating and cooling elements of a space be part of a platform unit. Thus a space would have

a platform and

modules

and be held together and supported by a skeleton

which would include within it the channels needed to provide energy

and enable the recycling of waste.

I had the pleasure of conducting an email interview with Dr. David Sailor, the director of the Green Building Research Laboratory (GBRL) at Portland State University (link to resume). He is a leading researcher in the effects of green roofs and energy use in buildings and the impact green infrastructure can have on cooling our cities. He and his colleagues have developed tools to help quantify these impacts.

Green Infrastructure Digest (GrID): I understand that this year you became the first Director of the Green Building Research Laboratory (GBRL) at Portland State University. What is the focus of the research you are conducting at GBRL? Why and how was GBRL started?

Dr. David Sailor: The Green Building Research Laboratory was essentially an outgrowth of the funded research agendas of myself and my GBRL colleagues. This group of Portland State University faculty included Graig Spolek in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Loren Lutzenhiser r in Urban Studies, and Sergio Palleroni in Architecture. Over the years we had developed a number of collaborative projects and decided it was time to build upon this collaboration by creating a physical laboratory where we, our students, and our industry partners could work together on fundamental and applied research to benefit the green building industry.

We pitched the idea of a collaborative shared-user facility to Oregon BEST and to the PSU Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices, both of whom agreed to provide the initial funding for the lab. As a result, while the lab was initiated by four faculty members at Portland State, it really serves as an Oregon University System shared resource.

There really is a wide range of research activities going on in the lab. This includes several monitoring projects with local builders, property owners, and school districts with a focus on understanding the thermal and moisture performance of building envelopes as well as the indoor environmental quality of these buildings. We also continue to make advances in the monitoring and modeling of green roof performance. Personally I have been involved in a number of monitoring projects and in creating an energy modeling tool for evaluating the energy performance of green roof design decisions. My colleague Graig Spolek has been using some of the GBRL water quality testing equipment to better understand the chemical composition of green roof runoff. We are also using GBRL facilities to understand the interactions between buildings and the urban atmospheric environment. This involves both modeling and field measurements.

GrID: A lot of your research has been focused on green roofs and heat island mitigation through the use of green infrastructure. How significant of a role does green infrastructure have in addressing thermal heat gain within our built environment? It appears through the tools you have developed for the MIST program that you have been able to quantify these impacts? Can you explain to our readers, what the MIST program entails?

Dr. Sailor: Yes, my research career actually started with a focus on urban heat island mitigation through use of urban vegetation and highly reflective (high albedo) urban surfaces. The US EPA funded some of my early modeling efforts in an attempt to provide a quantitative assessment of how much potential there is for cities to cool their summertime air temperatures through city-wide modification of urban surface characteristics (vegetation and albedo). We used regional scale atmospheric models of about 20 cities across the US to create information on the potential impacts of such mitigation on summertime urban air temperatures, peak ozone concentrations, and energy consumption. The result of that was a fairly user-friendly urban heat island screening tool – the Mitigation Impact Screening Tool – or MIST. The tool uses fairly simple interpolation and extrapolation of our modeled results so that policy makers in any US city can easily estimate the order of magnitude of the impact that any particular mitigation strategy might have in their city. I like to emphasize the “S” in MIST – this is a Screening tool. Ultimately, any policy decisions that involve significant investment of public funds to mitigate the urban heat island ought to be based on a more thorough, city-specific analysis – which of course can start by running MIST.

GrID: Many of our readers would like to know if green roofs can reduce energy use in buildings and if so, by how much? What factors most influence the outcome? What light has your research been able to shed on this pressing question?

Dr. Sailor: The thermal performance of green roofs depends on a number of factors. Specifically, roof construction, depth and properties of the growing media – including soil moisture, plant characteristics and coverage, and local climate characteristics all affect heat transfer into the building. The role of the roof on building energy consumption also depends on internal building loads and schedules. An often overlooked point is that the performance of any alternative technology depends on the baseline that is used for the comparison. As a result, I hesitate to assign a specific level of savings that could be expected from green roof implementation. That said, the various simulations that we have conducted for cities across the US have shown that a green roof can have comparable summertime air conditioning benefits to those achieved by white or “cool” roofs. In contrast to a cool roof, however, the added thermal insulation of a green roof can result in a wintertime heating energy savings whereas the cool roof generally has a wintertime heating penalty. In general, our model shows that the annual air conditioning energy savings associated with replacing a typical roof with a green roof are on the order of 100 to 500 kWh for each 1,000 sq. ft of green roof. What is important to note, however, is that the energy savings are just one component to be considered in determining the economic and environmental value of green roofs. It is likely that the stormwater, urban heat island, and extended roof life aspects of green roofs are equally important.

GrID: The energy savings for green roofs are more modest than I would have expected. I remember some of your findings displayed at the 2007 Green Roof for Healthy Cities conference in Minneapolis had energy saving ranges between 4-12% depending on the location.

Dr. Sailor: Yes, the air conditioning energy savings by themselves are modest. The numbers I gave above are just for the Air Conditioning savings. Heating savings can be comparable or more important depending upon the location and roof design.

The data that you recall from the Minneapolis meeting were specified in terms of HVAC savings. The numbers from that poster were 3-6% annual cooling electricity savings in Minneapolis, 2-5% for Phoenix, and 3% in Orlando. For heating energy savings we had found up to 10-14% for Orlando and Phoenix, and about 4% for Minneapolis. While the model has changed some, these values are generally consistent with what we are still finding.

The nominal ranges that I described from our current model simulations are for a green roof in comparison to a roof that has an albedo of 30%. Both roofs are assumed to be insulated to modern energy code standards. The actual savings depend very much on the baseline used for comparison with the current tool providing a conservative estimate that might significantly underestimate savings for some applications. Also, it should be noted, that depending upon soil depth, vegetative lushness, local climate, and building type, a green roof can actually INCREASE the energy cost for heating or cooling in a building. The tool can provide the necessary feedback to avoid such a situation, and then help you move toward an optimum design with respect to total energy performance.

GrID: Oftentimes, engineers modeling the energy use of a building find it difficult to accurately simulate the effects of green roofs on energy use. Can you tell our readers about the plug-in your have created for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) EnergyPlus modeling software? How has this enabled mechanical engineers to more accurately model the effects of green roofs? How widely used is it?

Dr. Sailor: We developed a physically-based model of the energy balance of a vegetated roof and integrated this model into EnergyPlus. This module is now a part of the standard release of EnergyPlus and allows the energy modeler to explore how variations in green roof design can impact whole building energy performance. It is hard for me to assess how widely used it is among practitioners in the field, but I have been contacted by multiple groups around the US who are now gearing up to use the model in their research and design work.

GrID: If the impact green roofs have on energy use in a building is as modest as you describe, why would you need to model the green roof? Are there cases where it can/has make/made a significant difference?

Dr. Sailor: As I mentioned previously, if one does not pay attention to the green roof design from an energy standpoint, the roof may perform WORSE than a conventional roof. The tool can help the user avoid such potentially undesirable outcomes and then be used to optimize the design for improving energy performance beyond a conventional design. In the case of a retrofit the existing roof insulation may be significantly lower than current code or the current membrane may be much darker than the 30% reflective baseline that I use in the modeling. In such cases, the actual energy savings of the retrofit may be much larger than that reported directly in the current version of the calculator. Nevertheless, the calculator can be used to optimize the energy performance of the new roof.

GrID: What do you see as the future of green infrastructure?

Dr. Sailor: I think that historically there has been a bit of inertia within the building industry that tends to limit the pace of innovation and application of new concepts. From the perspective of an academic researcher I see great opportunities for applied research to develop new technologies and the data and modeling tools necessary to understand the building performance implications of these technologies. Green roofs and walls are technologies that are both promising, and receiving increased interest in recent years. In order for green infrastructure to reach its full potential, however, it is important to develop the tools and data needed to fully evaluate their many co-benefits.

It is a fact that heating and cooling systems are major factors for those looking to purchase homes,

It is a fact that heating and cooling systems are major factors for those looking to purchase homes, and are a critical part of living comfortably in a home. You may frequently hear the term “HVAC,” which is used to describe home heating and cooling systems. The acronym stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning–which are the 3 primary functions of a home system.

Heating and cooling systems are classified as either central or local. Central heating and cooling is the most standard method, and is defined by a system that produces warm or cool air in one central area and then distributes it throughout the home. Some of the products typically used in central heating and cooling systems are gas and oil furnaces, controls and thermostats, air conditioners, heat pumps, and evaporator coils. Local heating and cooling, on the other hand, produces warm or cool air at the location where it is needed and serves small spaces.

Heating systems keep your home warm and comfortable. If you live in a particularly cold climate, the function of your heating system is a high priority. Most central heating and cooling systems are classified as forced air systems, because they send air through ductwork for distribution.

Indoor Environmental Quality :: 13 points achieved out of 21 points available ::

We followed the prescriptive path for Indoor Air Quality and I have to say of all the section I actually thought this was the toughest. IEQ measures the moisture control, outdoor air ventilation, distribution heating and cooling, use of low emitting materials, air filtering and contaminant control during construction.

We achieved 2 points for installation and the performance of our dual environmental recovery systems (ERVs). Our enhanced local exhaust which was based on occupancy sensors that exhaust air to the outdoors as well as the continuous operation of one of the ERVs, achieved an additional two for the points.

We also achieved additional points by installing a Vacuflo central vacuum system (which is awesome and so easy to use!), designing and installing a gorgeous and uber efficient mudroom to store shoes, reducing household contaminants and installing filters with a MRV 10 rating. We did really well in minimizing pollutants from the garage through our spray foam insulation, CO2 detectors, and painting of the garage walls, as well as the installation of an exhaust fan which turns on based on an occupancy sensor installed in the garage.

With the goal of really improving our home’s indoor air quality to keep our house free of allergens, contaminants and VOCs, I’m pleased with performance of the systems we’ve installed.

Every year, thousands of Canadians go into sudden cardiac arrest – their hearts simply stop beating. The vast majority die. But for more than a decade, hypothermia has been a proven method of treating patients whose hearts have stopped functioning.

If a heartbeat is reestablished, doctors can bring down the surviving patient’s body temperature by 5 degrees Celsius, and leave them in a chilled state for 24 hours. Then, they slowly warm the patients to normal temperature, and bring them out of their induced coma. What they are discovering is that patients who are chilled have far better outcomes than those patients who are revived from their cardiac arrest but not given access to hypothermic treatment; fewer patients are dying or suffering long-term irreversible damage such as brain damage.

In this documentary that I produced for CBC Radio’s The Current we meet Bill MacDonald, a cardiac arrest survivor, and his devoted friend Ferdy Rochas. And we also meet the talented team of doctors and researchers at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and at Life Recovery Systems in New Jersey who are doing much to improve the outcomes of patients like Bill.

“Despite no global warming in 10 years and recording setting cold in 2007-2008, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climatic Change (IPCC) and computer modelers who believe that CO2 is the cause of global warming still predict the Earth is in store for catastrophic warming in this century. IPCC computer models have predicted global warming of 1° F per decade and 5-6° C (10-11° F) by 2100 (Fig. 1), which would cause global catastrophe with ramifications for human life, natural habitat, energy and water resources, and food production. All of this is predicated on the assumption that global warming is caused by increasing atmospheric CO2 and that CO2 will continue to rise rapidly.”

I thought this was worth posting. So global warming really IS a hoax.

Original Article here.

The Climate Has Changed

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

The case for man-made global warming took a major hit last week when 62 megabytes of data, including e-mail messages and model codes (searchable here), were stolen from the UK’s University of East Anglia and then made public. The new information tells us much that we already suspected — warming scaremongers are cooking the books and suppressing dissent in order to push their agenda.

These aren’t just any scientists, either. They have been influential in driving the hype, including with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which issued a report in 2007 declaring that the end is near if massive shackles aren’t put on the economies of nations such as the U.S. Phil Jones, director of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, Keith Briffa also of CRU and Michael Mann of Penn State University — the creator of the debunked “hockey stick” graph — are some of the key players.

One of the most enlightening e-mails discusses whether the work of academic skeptics should be included in that IPCC report (which won the Committee and Al Gore a Nobel Peace Prize, by the way). Jones wrote to Mann, “I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin [Trenberth] and I will keep them out somehow — even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!” Trenberth is head of the Climate Analysis Section at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research.

The pair also discussed how they could pressure scientific journals to maintain the party line. Mann suggested that, for one, the journal “Climate Research” should be targeted. “Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal.” (Sounds a bit like White House adviser David Axelrod’s assessment of Fox News: “[Fox is] really not news — it’s pushing a point of view. And the bigger thing is that other news organizations … ought not to treat them that way, and we’re not going to treat them that way.”)

Of course, the definition of science is challenging hypotheses, not stifling dissent; following the evidence, not contriving it to fit.

But stifling and contriving are exactly what warmists are doing. In another e-mail, Jones wrote, “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.” So the goal is to “hide the decline”?

Scientist Mick Kelly wrote to Jones about manipulating data to hide the fact that the planet is actually cooling: “I’ll maybe cut the last few points off the filtered curve before I give the talk again, as that’s trending down as a result of the end effects and the recent coldish years.”

Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research wrote to Mann complaining of cold weather and admitting, “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment, and it is a travesty that we can’t.”

Perhaps they can’t account for cooling because their code for creating the models is geared toward making the earth appear warmer. In fact, the code may be more damning than the e-mails. One line of code features, for example, a variable called “fudge factor,” which allows these scientists to put in whatever they want to create the desired outcome in the computer models.

Australian geologist Ian Plimer, a global warming skeptic, summed it up: The e-mails “show that data was massaged, numbers were fudged, diagrams were biased, there was destruction of data after freedom of information requests, and there was refusal to submit taxpayer-funded data for independent examination.” Other than that, the science was accurate!

Considering that everything from the Kyoto Protocol to Waxman-Markey and Kerry-Boxer in Congress, to EPA regulations to the Copenhagen conference are based on this faulty, fudged and fictitious data, policy makers should, at minimum, re-evaluate their plans. Certainly, the world’s economy should not take a hit for nothing but lies.

UPDATE: The Washington Post, no doubt in an effort to be “fair and balanced,” published three letters to the editor in response to an editorial about this climate scandal. Two of the letters were in opposition to the Post’s defense of the warmists. Trouble is, the second letter was from none other than Michael Mann, and he linked to RealClimate.org so readers could be bombarded with more warming propaganda. The Post didn’t bother to note that Mann is being investigated for his role in the scandal.

UPDATE 2 (Tuesday afternoon): The Associated Press reports, “Britain’s University of East Anglia says [Phil Jones] the director of its prestigious Climatic Research Unit is stepping down pending an investigation into allegations that he overstated the case for man-made climate change.”

Medical Advances and Breakthroughs

Courtesy: Good HouseKeeping MagazineBy Beth Howard

Excerpt From the article “Medical Advances and Breakthroughs”; January 2010

Code Cool

When a person’s heart stops beating, no blood — and no oxygen — is going to the brain. Cooling the body a few degrees reduces the chance of damage, increasing the odds that the patient will return to a normal life. That’s why accident victims who live through a plunge into a freezing river can survive without neurological problems. But in a hospital, the processes that are used to cool bodies — blowing cold air on patients, or packing them in ice — can take hours, often too long to stop cell death and brain damage. It’s no wonder only a small fraction of cardiac arrest patients whose hearts are restarted regain all their abilities.

“If the stars hadn’t fallen in line on November 11, 2008,” as Cynthia Crawford, 57, puts it, she might not have been in that lucky group. A former psychiatric nurse in Baton Rouge, LA, and a mother of four, Crawford was at New Orleans’s Ochsner Medical Center for tests to see if she was a candidate for a heart transplant. A former smoker who suffered from congestive heart failure, Crawford was using a pacemaker and an implanted defibrillator to keep her heart pumping. But it was growing weak. When a medical resident found her slumped in the hospital garage, he quickly rushed her to the ER. You could call it being in the right place at the right time. Ochsner is one of only about 50 medical facilities that use a novel cooling therapy called the ThermoSuit. This inflatable cocoon-like device sprays the body with hundreds of icy-cold jets of water, reducing a patient’s temperature in about 20 to 40 minutes. “It’s faster than anything previously available,” says Paul McMullan Jr., M.D., an interventional cardiologist at Ochsner; that has translated into far lower rates of brain damage in patients at centers using the device. Crawford doesn’t remember much about the day her heart stopped. But when she woke up in the intensive care unit, she says, “I knew I’d been to hell and back. I learned that they’d had to shock me five times to get my heart going again.” After cooling her body, doctors implanted a heart pump to take over the work of her weakened heart, buying time while she waits for a new one from a donor. But she wouldn’t even be on the transplant list if she hadn’t been lucky enough to be placed in a ThermoSuit. “A nurse on the cardiac unit told me that somebody who comes in like I did usually ends up in a long-term-care facility,” says Crawford. Instead, she has “more energy than ever.” And while the battery for the pump, carried in a vest, is a “little cumbersome,” says Crawford, it hasn’t slowed her down. “I go everywhere — especially if it involves shopping.

Anthony Gucciardi Infowars December 8, 2009 Besides scaring children into buying their pseudo-scient

Anthony Gucciardi
Infowars
December 8, 2009

Besides scaring children into buying their pseudo-scientific propaganda, the con artists attending the Copenhagen meeting are using sensationalism to instill fear amongst the entire world. Even while man-made global warming has been disproven, and the earth begins to show obvious signs of cooling, the meeting continues. Meanwhile, Obama remains even too impatient to see the outcome of the treasonous event, declaring carbon dioxide a dangerous pollutant. Despite the fact that carbon dioxide is a life-giving gas, people still cling to the false theory of man-made global warming.

The transparency of the Copenhagen scam has been apparent for an extremely long time, with the Climategate emails revealing that the CRU was trying to get money from oil companies such as British Petroleum and Exxon-Mobil. This erases any doubt that the oil companies are indeed behind the man-made global warming scam. With faulty carbon credits creating opportunities for big business to nefariously generate massive income, along with promoting the cash-cow “green movement”, it is no surprise that they are signing on. These incentives are only minor, compared to the payroll that a business may receive by becoming an accomplice in the steady flow of man-made global warming propaganda that is so prevalent today.

Even the “Copenhagen Communiqué”, a document released by more than 500 global corporations before the Copenhagen meeting commenced, calls for developed nations to “de-carbonise their economies”. This is only a document that is a precursor to the Copenhagen meeting, which is going on right now. With carbon taxes being pushed on a global-scale, it would not be surprising if they are claimed to be a requirement by world leaders during the meeting.

Of course, it will be extremely hard to push all of these ridiculous regulations on the people, as support for the false concept of man-made global warming dwindles. Thanks to the Climategate and other events that battered the gates of the deceptive man-made global warming infrastructure, there is a growing resistance to the phony claims. Even the resignation of Phil Jones cannot put a muzzle on the Climatechange truth. The Copenhagen meeting can spew all the propaganda it wants, but the people do not want to hear it. Inform a friend about the Copenhagen deception, and join the peaceful revolution of truth.

First up on the list today is a story about the University of Illinois building a new supercomputer data center with no power backup. Apparently they consider their power grid to be super reliable so they don’t need power backup. Good luck with that one.

Next up is the story that the EPA has announced the finding that green house gases endanger the public health. If you’re not actively moving to get your data center greened, you better get your keister in gear. Oh, and if you’re still running a massive water sucking cooling system, better look for a replacement, the EPA points to serious upcoming water availability problems too.

“The greenhouse theorists contend the world is threatened with a rise in average temperature,

“The greenhouse theorists contend the world is threatened with a rise in average temperature, which if it reached 4 or 5 degrees, could melt the polar ice caps, raise sea level by as much as 300 feet and cause a worldwide flood,” explained Newsweek in its special January 26, 1970, report on “The Ravaged Environment.” In the service of balance, however, the magazine also noted that many other scientists saw temperatures dropping: “This theory assumes that the earth’s cloud cover will continue to thicken as more dust, fumes, and water vapor are belched into the atmosphere by industrial smokestacks and jet planes. Screened from the sun’s heat, the planet will cool, the water vapor will fall and freeze, and a new Ice Age will be born.”

Kenneth Watt was less equivocal in his Swarthmore speech about Earth’s temperature. “The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years,” he declared. “If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

Many of you are too young to remember, but in 1975 our government pushed “the coming ice age.”

Random House dutifully printed “THE WEATHER CONSPIRACY … coming of the New Ice Age.” This may be the only book ever written by 18 authors. All 18 lived just a short sled ride from Washington, D.C. Newsweek fell in line and did a cover issue warning us of global cooling on April 28, 1975. And The New York Times, Aug. 14, 1976, reported “many signs that Earth may be headed for another ice age.”……………………<CLICK LINK FOR THE REST OF THE FORBES.COM ARTICLE> http://www.forbes.com/2009/12/03/climate-science-gore-intelligent-technology-sutton.html
