Bei One-Hit-Wondern frage ich mich ja immer “was machen die eigentlich heute?”. Und es ist oft sehr interessant was diese Künstler Menschen nach ihrem kurzen Erfolg so treiben. Bestes Beispiel von dem ich heute erfahren habe, ist Coolio – der Rapper mit der komischen Frisur und seinem Rap-Hit “Gangsters Paradies” zum Film “Dangerous Minds” , remember?!

Hier also die Frage:  “Was machst Coolio eigentlich heute?” und die Antwort: “Er kocht!!!“

Damit hab ich auch am wenigsten gerechnet, aber es ist so. In seinem eigenen YouTube-Channel mit dem Namen “MyDamnChannel” veröffentlicht der Rapper Videos mit Kochanleitungen. Natürlich bleibt er seinem Image treu und bringt in die Koch-Sessions eine Menge Funk und Soul rein, mit Miezen im Hintergrund und Besuchen von seinen Bros – Wie ein Pimp das in der Küche nun mal so macht!

Den Channel gibt es anscheinend schon ne ganze Zeit, ca. ein Jahr, und passend zur Weihnachtszeit erscheint das Kochbuch als Paperback dazu. Mit dem wunderschönen Titel “Cookin’ with Coolio: 5 Star Meals At A 1 Star Price” erhältlich bei Amazon für schlappe 10 $. Damit ist die Wunschliste doch wieder um einen Posten länger geworden! Diese Buch gehört in jedes Küchenfuchs-Bücherregal, zwischen Jamie Oliver und Tim Mälzer!

Today I got up, went downstairs, grabbed my clean dress-clothes out of the dryer, and proceeded to get ready for a funeral. It was a funeral for a lady whom I met twice, Florence Strom. She was 97(!) when she passed on. Apparently (as I learned during the service) she was an amazing woman. Hearing about her life gave some meaning to me before reading some selections at her service.

I was asked to read Psalms 23 (at the funeral home), and the Baha’i obligatory prayer for the deceased (at the graveyard). If you don’t know (as I didn’t), psalms 23 is the “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” one. All I could think of last night was:

Which was hilarious, but also made me feel like I was being extremely inappropriate. On the bright side, I’ve decided to include a clause in my will that states that my siblings have to perform a rendition of gansta’s paradise after reading this psalm….and that Nadia has to be the main rapper (as she knows the lyrics by heart, and kills it live).

Also, I discovered that even though the Baha’i obligatory prayer for the departed is the only congregational prayer, there is still no repetition by the crowd! I was under the impression that congregational meant one person reads something, and the congregation responds, but apparently not. So I read this prayer, out in the bitter cold, and it’s LONG, but it was nice. I actually felt like it was really fitting for the occasion. (Funerals kinda force you to consider mortality, especially in relation to yourself. What do you think happens after you die? And if you believe in an afterlife, what do you think it’s like?)

Then we had a traditional Norwegian smorgasboard (mostly fish and potatoes), I socialized with some peoples (and received suggestions that I explore a career in radio), and then went and played chess.

The afternoon was focused on the visit of Ted’s nephew, Darren, who came with his wife and two kids from Kelowna. I got home, changed from ultra-dressy to jeans and a T, and cleaned-up and organized till them peoples arrived. They have a daughter named Emily as well, so there are 2(!) Emily Glabushes running around the Okanagan.

The night was joyous, and once again, family is jes wicked.

I am totally in awe of this new cookbook, Cookin’ with Coolio, which, according to the Village Voice, REALLY DOES EXIST.  From the Voice:

Chapters are titled “It’s Hard Out Here for a Shrimp,” “Appetizers for that Ass,” and “Salad-Eatin’ Bitches.” Salt is not measured in teaspoons, but doled out in “dime bags.” Chicken isn’t carved into breasts, but “breastesses.” The pantry is the “pimptry.”

WOW.  I had no idea that Coolio (of “Gangster’s Paradise” fame) had been cooking in online webisodes on My Damn Channel.  Leveraging social media to get a book deal!  Sound familiar?  So entrepreneurial.  God, I love this country.

Believe it or not, you haven’t fallen into some alternate universe! Coolio has his own online cooking show. You know Coolio–Gangsta’s Paradise– yes, that Coolio!

I think that I would be correct in assuming that times were tough and Coolio ran out of lyrics to rap to and decided that it would be better to abuse helpless people on the street and cook some food while he’s at it.

I really have no words for this.

The Ghetto Gourmet now has an on-line cooking show and a new book called Cookin’ With Coolio. Mixing African-American and urban foods with such world cuisines as Asian and Italian, Coolio has crafted what he calls “ghetto fusion,” offering dishes like chicken lettuce blunts, Coolio caprese salad and cold shrimpin’.

That is one cook book that I would love to read. I don’t think that I would ever put any money to purchase it, but it would definitely be worth a trip to Chapters and a few minutes of my time to browse through.

I wonder what his next dish will be….possibly Gangsta Chicken Cacciatore???

Rapper DMX is the subject of a new $1 million dollar lawsuit for backing out of a celebrity boxing match scheduled to take place in December in Birmingham, Alabama.

DMX was originally scheduled to fight boxer/actor Eric Martinez during an event titled “Alabama Pride,” promoted by Thunder Promotions.

The rapper was scheduled to box Martinez for three rounds but backed out of the fight when Thunder Promotions allegedly refused to fix the fight or guarantee DMX’s safety.

DMX’s abrupt cancellation left promoters scurrying to find a replacement.

Shortly after it was announced that DMX would be pulling out of the fight, Thunder Promotions signed up rapper Coolio to face off against Martinez in the ring on December 12th.

According to Coolio, he has no plans to fix the fight or to even lose the contest.

“I’ve been doing martial arts for 18 years…somebody [is] gonna get knocked the f**k out,” Coolio exclaimed to radio host Angela Yee during an interview last week. “Coolio don’t take a** whoopin’s well. I’ll tell you what, if I get into trouble, you gonna know because it’s gonna go from boxing to f**king wrestling and choking because I hate to lose.”

Thunder Promotions filed the $1 million dollar lawsuit against DMX in Birmingham County Court on Friday (November 20th).

Thunder Promotions claims DMX’s cancellation has caused them hundreds and thousands of dollars and damages.

The lawsuit is the latest financial set back for DMX, who also owes $1.5 million in back taxes to the IRS.

DMX’s brilliant idea to participate in a mixed martial arts fight is set to cost him millions. As previously reported, X agreed to participate in a battle with MMA fighter Eric Martinez.

He pulled out of the agreement however after learning that the fight would not be fixed and he’d more than likely get the beating of his life.
Now as Coolio steps in to replace him, he’s seeing court papers sent his way for reneging on his promise.

Thunder Promotions filed court papers Friday November 20 against the rapper in Birmingham County Court. According to the court documents, the promotion company claims DMX’s cancellation has caused them hundreds and thousands of dollars and damages and they’re suing him for $1 million dollars.

X also owes the government $1.5 million in back taxes.

Damn X, damn.

Earlier this week, Coolio stopped by Angela Yee’s morning show on Shade 45 and discussed replacing DMX in the boxing exhibition December 12th. Afterward, he talked about laying the smack down on crappy rappers. Go figure.

Fat Cat thinks it’s not a good idea to write about a place you’re not familiar with.  My take on it is you go where the story takes you.

Of course, it’s ideal to experience firsthand a particular locale, but it’s not always possible.  Think about folks who write about 20,000 leagues under the sea, or galaxies far, far away.

That’s what research is for.

Half of my NaNoWriMo novel takes place in Venice, Italy, during Carnival time.  Although I’ve been to Venice before, I was 12 at the time, so — well, you know.  It’s been a while.

Yeah, I have my Italian phrase book and Venice guidebook, along with a couple of maps I purchased from B&N, but obviously, those resources represent a small fraction of the universe of Venice, and only specific tiny facets.

This is where the Internet never ceases to amaze me.

I discovered a wonderful website called SlowTravel that has a huge archive of slow travel trip reports to dozens of different countries.  And they’re a wonderful resource, these firsthand travelogues.  One particular trip report was over a 100 pages long, beautifully written, and filled with fantastic details regarding food, customs, and language.  That’s where I came across a comment that Italian toilets don’t have seats.

Great.  Because in one scene, my protagonist suffers a very unfortunate bout of diarrhea and has to scramble to find a public toilet.  I remembered the little tidbit about toilets in Italy having no seats, so I did a search to verify that fact.

Guess what?  Not only does PoopReport.com have an article regarding Italian toilets, but it covers details like water pressure and what to expect in different regions, accompanied by 17 pictures.  Like a toilet trip report.  And they have poop reports in various destinations including Ethiopia and Iran, cleverly entitled “Travel Logs.” Who knew?

In my research, I’ve also discovered that Modern day Carnival in Venice begins with the Vollo del’Angelo, or the Flight of the Angel, during which a famous woman “flies” suspended on a cable from the Companile tower in Piazza San Marco to the loggia of Palazzo Ducale (except in 2008, when the rapper Coolio did the honors).

Since my protagonist is there to witness the event in my story, I needed to find a way to describe it realistically.  Besides the numerous pictures and videos that can be found, I also found this totally rad 360-degree interactive panaramic picture that can be manipulated to look at the scene from every angle.  Amazing.  It’s like standing in this frozen moment of time.  I can see that the sky is clear, the crowd is literally packed asses to elbows, and everyone’s got a camera held up above their heads.  Fantastic detail.

Not only that, but a search of YouTube will uncover videos of almost anything you can imagine.  Searching the Flight of the Angel revealed the little detail that they played “Hallelujah” over loudspeakers during the 2009 event.

So although it would be ideal for me to be able to experience all 10 days of Carnival in Venice, including all the wonderful masquerade parties and the wonderful restaurants, it’s not in the cards for me at this time.

However, that doesn’t mean I still can’t write about it, because it’s not so important that I get to go to Venice as it is that my readers get to go to Venice.

Which reminds me, my next novel takes place in mythological Hawaii.  Menehune country.  I can’t wait to visit.

Who do you think is tougher!?

Well apparently Coolio!!!  If you remember DMX was supposed to fight Eric Martinez (pro fighter) for a charity event in Alabama…

BUT for reasons unknown DMX pulled out of the event.  Now there have been a lot of speculation as to why the rapper backed out of the fight (call it being scared OR the simple fact that it wasn’t going to be rigged), BUT now it looks like another rapper is stepping up & ready to fight!

COOLIO!!!  That’s right… word is, the rapper has confirmed that he will be in Birmingham for the fight & he DOESN’T PLAN ON LOSING!

“I’m not a good loser, so I don’t plan on losing, it will be a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing my fans out in Birmingham… I’m scheduled to perform on December 11th, the night of the weigh-in and I’ll rock the mic the same night after I beat up Martinez.”

Je sais, ça fait beaucoup d’infos pour un seul titre. Surtout si vous n’étiez pas au courant que DMX devait monter sur le ring le 12 décembre prochain pour un match de boxe qui l’aurait opposé à Eric Martinez, pseudo artiste qui a un temps managé DMX. Sauf que X, en galère totale depuis qu’il est sorti de prison, a insisté pour que le match soit truqué, lui permettant ainsi d’empocher son argent à coup sûr tout en conservant son honneur et son image de mec hardcore. Et comme le fabuleux monde de la boxe est absolument sain et se refuse à toute manigance avant un combat, le promoteur Thunder Promotions a gentiment décliné la proposition, préférant remplacer DMX par… Coolio.

Sans tenir compte du fait que se faire virer pour laisser sa place à Coolio, c’est très dur pour l’égo, cette histoire agrave un peu plus la situation de DMX, qui doit environ 1,5 million de dollars au Fisc américain et qui comptait sur d’éventuels paris pour se refaire. Entre Method Man, Soulja Boy, Nas et maintenant X, je suis certain qu’il y a un stagiaire qui travaille pour l’IRS (impôts US) et qui déteste le hip hop, au point de traquer les rappeurs mauvais payeurs. Je vois pas d’autre explication logique.

Rapper DMX, who was supposed to debut in MMA in a few weeks in Birmingham, and then had the match changed from MMA to boxing, signed for the match, and then his manager sent the promoters an addendum to the contract stating that all parties involved agree that DMX is going to win the fight. The promoters refused to sign it and are looking for a replacement. The promoters are talking about a lawsuit against him for breach of contract.

And a few days later…

This is a great story. So DMX was supposed to have an MMA fight next month in Atlanta. Well, his people sent a contract to the promoters basically saying that DMX wins or he’s not fighting. So the promoters axed him from the show and announced they were probably going to be filing suit. So today it came out that they have found a replacement for him in the fight — COOLIO. Not making this up.

According to VIBE, DMX has backed out from his boxing match scheduled for December 12th. X allegedly wanted fight fixed in his favor. As a result, Coolio gets to test his knuckle game.

ContactMusic: Rapper-turned-reality TV star COOLIO has stepped up to the challenge for a celebrity martial arts fight after DMX pulled out of the event last week.
DMX, real name Earl Simmons, was due to battle it out with actor Eric Martinez in an Alabama Pride MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) bout next month (Dec09), but recently announced he was no longer interested amid fears for his safety.

Reports subsequently alleged the rapper quit because promoters at Thunder Productions refused to fix the match to guarantee him victory.

Gangsta’s Paradise hitmaker Coolio has now been brought in as a replacement. A Thunder Productions spokesperson tells TMZ.com, “(Coolio) is going to take this seriously.”

It was a fantastic voyage…riding the slide with my daddy!
