The last few months have been very busy with development at Cooliris, and we’re starting to see our new stuff roll out the virtual door. In the last week we’ve released Cooliris 1.11.5 (yes, this is the craziest numbering scheme ever) which is focused on improved performance, particularly on Windows machines, and on IE. On some older Windows machines our performance hasn’t been where we’d like it, so with a lot of focused effort from our engineers we were able to improve Wall scrolling performance by 30%. If you haven’t tried Cooliris in a while, give it a shot.
We’re also proud to announce support for Bing image search. We’ve had a lot of requests for Bing support from our user base, so with the use of Bing’s api’s we were able to add it into our image search offerings. You can launch Bing search either directly from Bing through the Cooliris mouseover icon, from the Cooliris launch button in your toolbar or directly from the search box in Cooliris. Because Bing search offers almost endless results, the looking for images from Bing in Cooliris is a great experience.

We have a lot more things coming soon. In the meantime, check out some spooky fun that we put together for Halloween, including some great old episodes of “Twilight Zone”.

With the recent success of Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 I thought it was only fitting to connect one of the tracks to my personal situation.

How does it apply? Well, this week marks the start of a new journey for me professionally – I have joined the Cooliris team, after spending a very enjoyable 4 months with Mozilla. I definitely learned a lot and am grateful to everyone there who helped me succeed.

Back to the music – “On to the Next One ft. Swizz Beatz” is fire. Definitely one of the best tracks on the album. As for me, well the title says it all. On to the Next One I go…where I’ll stop, man I don’t know, so let’s go…

· My Computer.

The New York-based company today announced that it is tapping Shashi Seth, formerly head of monetization for YouTube, as its senior vice president of Global Advertising Products, just weeks after it hired former Yahoo (s yhoo) executive Brad Garlinghouse to head its West Coast operations. After leaving YouTube, Seth joined Cooliris as its chief revenue officer. He is going back to work for Tim Armstrong, the former Google (s goog) sales honcho who has been tasked with turning around AOL. When I spoke to Seth this morning, he said that he’s going to be based in Mountain View, Calif., and will report to Jeff Levick, president of Global Advertising and Strategy at AOL.

Seth is going to work on AOL’s advertising platform business and will be responsible for the company’s monetization as it tries to become a major force in display advertising. Seth is a well-regarded and well-connected ad-industry insider, and from that perspective, this is a solid, smart move by AOL. His departure is bad news for Cooliris, one of my favorite startups (thanks to its awesome plug-in). While it’s unlikely that Seth’s exit is going to mortally wound Cooliris, which has been adding many senior executives to its roster and building up its bench, I am quite certain the fledgling company is going to experience some hiccups and miss his advertising industry connections.

As the web develops more and more social sites, it is necessary to cross-link these sites so that they can work together. Many such sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Digg use their icons on other sites so that users can tweet a direct link to a news story or share a video on Facebook, for example.

Through a built-in search bar, Cooliris lets users search databases such as Amazon, YouTube, Hulu, and Google Images. It then projects the search results from these other sites onto its “Wall.” Users can then scroll side to side and zoom in and out to see all results matching their search. Cooliris doesn’t serve as a container just for these purposes, though. You can also get news, watch music videos, or even play games.

For advertisers, Cooliris is a way to integrate their ad within the Wall. Two ways to do this are:

Cooliris can project a “sponsor ad” which serves as the Wall’s background, or projection screen that the Wall of media thumbnails rests on.

Axe advertisement as the Wall's background.

Cooliris can embed a column of ads into the media thumbnails projected on the Wall.

Column of three advertisements embedded into the Wall.

The second way allows for user interactivity. Most video ads on the Web are required to play before something else does. Although these are usually short, the user is forced to watch an ad they probably don’t want to watch. Things like this only justify an annoyance with advertising. However, if the user was able to choose which ads he or she wants to view, then floodgates of interactivity are wide open, thus enhancing user experience as well.

No longer are users forced to watch things, but rather they are given a choice. When a user takes advantage of this choice and picks an ad to view, they are more susceptible to actually viewing it.

I know what you’re thinking. Why would a user want to watch an ad if they’re annoying?

Because ads are only annoying when people don’t want to see them. Nobody truly hates advertising. They just hate ads that interrupt.

Because of the opportunity for choice. People love choices, even if there are too many.

Because on Cooliris, ads don’t have the “annoyance” stigma built into them. It’s not like ads on Cooliris are hard to detect, either. They are clearly labeled “Advertisement.”

Because curiosity will strike when the user sees a thumbnail snapshot of an ad. They will wonder what bigger thing that snapshot is a part of. Think about how many videos or photos you’ve viewed on the Web because you were curious about the snapshot of it you saw.

Quite often the reason for an unsuccessful ad is that it doesn’t respect its audience. How much more respect can Cooliris give to its users than allowing them to choose when they want to view an ad? Two words: mutual trust. These guys may be on to something big…

The Cooliris plugin for Firefox is a fun media browser for sites such as flickr and google images.

The Cooliris plugin for Firefox is a fun media browser for sites such as flickr and google images. I have been curious if there might be a more effective use of this tool for architects specifically. My first thought was this might be an attractive powerpoint substitute to browse around the content live in a presentation, but this might end up being more confusing than useful. Then, it recently occured to me to try using this tool as a clean and simple viewer for zooming around a lengthy set of working drawings. It appears to work quite well. Here are more instructions. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments.

Step 1: Download and Install Firefox.

Step 2: Download and Install the Cooliris plugin for Firefox.

Step 3: Create JPEG files of your drawing set.

We’re using Autodesk Revit 2010 for drawing production, which makes exporting each sheet to JPEG pretty easy. Exporting at 2000 horizontal pixels seems to work well for medium detail viewing. If you’re using another process, check for built in image exporting utilities. If that’s not available, print a PDF set of drawings and then save the PDF as JPG from within Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Step 4: Create a photo gallery of your drawing set.

Either create a local folder with all your JPG files, or create an online photo gallery at one of the Cooliris supported photo sites: Picasa, Flickr, etc. Unless you’re legally okay with posting your drawings to an image hosting site, it’s probably best to stick with the local drive viewer available in the upper left of Cooliris. Name the files numerically as they should appear in your drawing set. Add enough zero’s to keep the whole set in order. For example, name files A-001, not A-1. Remember the cooliris button (shown below) activates a page in the 3D viewer. Here is a sample drawing uploaded to view using Cooliris.

Step 5: Present or Review your drawing set

Activate fullscreen viewing in Cooliris and now you’ve got a clear drawing viewing tool that may have it’s place amongst certain presentations or internal document reviews. I’m interested in trying this out with our office’s Smartboard touch screen. We should be able to then use the smartboard built in mark up tools in combination with Snagit to seamlessly grab markup screenshots of notes made while reviewing drawings.

If you are a photo buff and you don’t have the Cooliris add-on for your firefox web browser you are really missing out on something great. What is cooliris? It’s an easy to use free add-on for Firefox that lets you display image search results from google, yahoo, and many other sources as a super cool easy to navigate wall of photos. Below is a screen grab showing what the wall of photos looks like. This screen shot is actually a pretty poor representation. Cooliris is way awesomer to use than I can display on my blog.

I have a couple favorite uses for Cooliris. If ever I come across a photographer that interests me I put his/her name into a google image search. Using Cooliris to view the results I’m greeted with a free wall of photos from a famous photographer. The above example is showing the results of an image search for the photographer Sabastiao Salgado (Thank you to regular reader razzbuffnik for the tip)

I also use Cooliris to entertain my 22 month old daughter. We look up all sorts of animals together. Now, whenever she sees me with my computer she say’s, “Up Dadda. See Animal. Look Goat.” The flickr image search seems to yield the best animal pictures.

Give it a try. It’s easy to install.

Boost for Facebook, simile al precedente.

Io odio i target! (cit. puffo Brontolone)

Consiglio Epiphany a:

A few months ago i realized that I had too many bookmarks and that I had bookmarks on several computers, which led me to FoxMarks addon for Firefox (now Xmarks).

It worked actually quite well with synchronizing my bookmarks on my stationary and laptop and later i even added my bookmarks on my computer in the US. The only problem I had was that it suddenly ceized to exist on my stationary and wouldn’t reinstall, but that was soon fixed after a lot of googling.

Although i am quite agitated over the recurring crashes. However as the tabs are almost always saved it hasn’t been much of a hassle, except when running webradio in the background.

As far as Themes go, AeroFox have been my companion, sadly it does not work yet with 3.5 that I am trying out right now. So far 3.5 has been much like the older versions, i’m going to start exploring the new features, such as secret browsing. Although I don’t see how it helps me except keep that vicious Google from accumulating more and more data on my internet habits.

Other addons for tabbing; foxtabs and colortabs. Foxtabs essentially gives you the ability to scroll through tabs like you would in vista (start button plus tab). Foxtabs however goodlooking is mostly good when you have a large number of diffrent tabs that you want to swiftly access. Colorfultabs is good addon, but doesn’t do much more than give you a more colorful browser and a free trial to Luminosity braingames.

Shareaholic on the otherhand is great and used constantly, especially for posting anything and everything onto facebook to your friends distraught. However i’ve also added hotmail so I can easily share links via mail, and also find other websites for social sharing and bookmarking. I tried digg it today and there is alot more sites that also are interesting.

Cooliris is also highly recommended. This great looking addon, makes finding pictures on the web very easily and viewing the pictures you have yourself a joy and will impress friends and your senses guaranteed. I use it to view pictures in my folder and when I am searching for media on the web, from videos to art. Sadly the shooping part is only useful for residents of the US.

Hope you like these little addons as well and happy continuing browsing!
