Hi Everyone,

This is another photo of the Monte Bello Islands. If you’re into taking seascapes then its the place for you. For those of you who don’t know about the history of the Monte Bello Islands, its quite fascinating. It was the site of Britain’s first atomic bomb tests in Australia and you can still see lots of debris and buildings that were left over from the tests. At Trimoulle Island we were able to look back and see the viewing platform that they used to watch the bombs going off, it was only approximately 5kms away from where the bombs went off. We couldn’t believe that they setup the viewing platform so close. Imagine suggesting to someone in this day and age that they stand behind a steel viewing platform and look at an atomic bomb going off!!! They would just laugh.

Those poor guys certainly weren’t safe from the fallout, fallout was even registered in Brisbane days later.

Photo Settings:

Aperture – F11

ISO – 50

Shutter Speed – 1/100sec

Cruising around the area in a boat its hard to understand how anyone could blow up such a beautiful area. These days its pristine and if you ever get the chance to head out there you should. If nothing else you might come back with a nice healthy glow.

Thank You For Stopping By,

A brief pictorial impression; click on the images in the gallery to enlarge. (Photographic nerdiness

A brief pictorial impression; click on the images in the gallery to enlarge.

(Photographic nerdiness; well in the semi-dark of an aquarium I would be nowhere without the gaping wide aperture of my 50mm f/1.7 lens – helped by in-body image stabilisation [is that a stab at Canikon? it might be])

To add a written impression as well; better than expected, the building is classic, makes you feel like your time-travelling back to the Victorian days. Most fish species are not terribly exotic or rare, but they are diverse, ranging from sturgeon via (the obligatory) rays and clownfish to spotted eels. I was positively surprised by the large number of conservation projects supported by Sea Life – very nice indeed.

Realising they support the “good causes” helps to understand the steep, IMO, entry price of nearly £15; they are not just feeding the fishes from that! Still, we were glad to have a 50% discount :p (hey, I’m Dutch, you know!).

We spent a good 2 hours inside, taking our time but also not looking at every little thing in great detail. So you could stretch it to 3 hours if you tried, which is a lot more than we were “fearing” beforehand. In summary, if you can get the discount (we got one from Pinocchio’s restaurant; 50% for up to 4 people, offer ends, I think, end of 2009) and go there, you will not regret it!

And now without further ado, the photos.

Thousands of strange ceatures which exist in perpetual darkness miles below the surface of the ocean

Thousands of strange ceatures which exist in perpetual darkness miles below the surface of the oceans have been catalogued for the first time by scientists.

The Census of Marine Life, a major international project surveying the oceans, recorded 5,722 species living at depths greater than 0.62 miles where the sun never shines.

Many inhabited icy cold black realms as deep as three miles where the pressure would crush a human.

In total, 17,650 species were identified living deeper than 200 metres, the ”twilight zone” where light barely penetrates and photosynthesis ceases to be possible.

Scientists were surprised by the diversity of life in the deepest reaches of the oceans.

Even the mud at the bottom of the ocean abyss was teeming with living things.

Among the bizarre creatures encountered by the researchers were a six foot long cirrate octopod – nicknamed ”Dumbo” because of the large ear-like fins it uses to swim – discovered more than a mile deep on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Another was a ”wildcat” tubeworm caught in the act of dining on crude oil in the Gulf of Mexico. When the worm was extracted by a robot arm from the sea bed, oil gushed both from the animal’s body and the hole in which it was found.

Also recovered from the Atlantic was an ”indescribable” catch of multi-coloured invertebrates, including corals, sea cucumbers and sea urchins living a kilometre below the surface.

At more than 1.7 miles down, in the northern Gulf of Mexico, scientists videoed an odd-looking transparent sea cucumber creeping forward on its many tentacles.

Dr Robert Carney, from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, US, one of the Census scientists, said: ”Distribution is pretty straightforward for animals in the deep sea. The composition of faunal populations changes with depth, likely a consequence of physiology, ecology and the suitability of sea-floor habitat condition for certain animals.

”Diversity is harder to understand. Although the mud on the deep sea floor appears monotonous and poor in food, that monotonous mud has a maximum of species diversity on the lower continental margin. To survive in the deep, animals must find and exploit meagre or novel resources, and their great diversity in the deep reflects how many ways there are to adapt.”

The vast majority of creatures collected in mud from the abyssal plain were new to science, said the researchers.

Of some 680 specimens of copepods collected from the south-eastern Atlantic, for example, just seven could be identified.

Among the hundreds of species of earthworm-sized macrofauna found at different sites, 50% to 85% were unrecognised.

British expert Dr David Billett, another member of the team from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, said: ”The abyssal fauna is so rich in species diversity and so poorly described that collecting a known species is an anomaly. Describing for the first time all the different species in any coffee cup-sized sample of deep sea sediment is a daunting challenge.”

The scientist used a range of high and low-tech hardware including robot submersibles and sea-floor rovers, coring drills, dredges and trawling nets.

The Census, which is also surveying life at shallower depths, is due to complete its work in October 2010.

Dr Chris German, one of the project leaders from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, US, said: ”The deep sea is the Earth’s largest continuous ecosystem and largest habitat for life. It is also the least studied.”

The state will be adding 1,500 concrete modules to Keawakapu Beach on Monday in an effort to expand an artificial reef located about a half mile offshore.

The public is asked to stay clear of the area as crews from the Department of Land and Natural Resources work to deploy the “Z” modules beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, November 30, 2009. The public will not be able to dive or fish on the artificial reef until the deployment is complete. DLNR Aquatics crews advise the public to say at least 300 yards away from the deployment site.

Keawakapu Artificial Reef was created in 1962. It is approximately 52 acres in size, and consists of 150 cars, 2,250 tire modules, 35 concrete slabs, and one vessel (the “St. Anthony”) was added in 1997. This is the first addition of concrete modules since 1990 to expand the reef.

The modules, constructed from concrete by Pioneer Machinery, Inc. will be loaded onto an American Marine barge and will be deployed in 60-120 feet of water. Each “Z”-shaped form measures eight feet long by four feet wide with 12-inch legs at each end facing in opposite directions, and weighs about 2,200 pounds (1.1 tons).

Prior to and during the deployment of the “Z” forms, the target area will be marked with surface floats to warn fishermen, boaters, and divers to stay clear of the barge and the reef site, for safety reasons.

“New coral and seaweed will grow on the forms, which will provide additional habitat to new communities of reef fish,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “Artificial reefs increase potential fishing grounds for fishermen, and the cost to the State is minimal,” she said.

DLNR has four shallow water (50-100′) artificial reefs and one deepwater (300-420′) artificial reef. Three of the shallow water reefs are located off O‘ahu at Wai‘anae, in Maunalua Bay, and Kualoa. The fourth is located off Keawakapu on Maui. The deep water artificial reef is located off ‘Ewa Beach, O‘ahu.

Numerous studies have shown that artificial reefs are effective at enhancing reef habitat, thus increasing fish biomass and species diversity within the reef site. Artificial reefs are key components in fisheries enhancement, as well as a substrate for the settlement of coral polyps (coral growth). Artificial reefs are also attractive SCUBA and snorkel dive sites.

The remote and largely inaccessible Kimberley coast is one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the world.

Characterised by a broad continental shelf, the area is dotted with reefs, shoals, banks and near shore islands, often fringed with coral reefs.

At least 2,815 surveyed and mostly uninhabited islands extend through the Bonaparte and Buccaneer Archipelagos.

The Kimberley coast is rich in species habitats, ranging from mangroves, to seagrass beds, fringing reefs, mudflats and sandy bottoms. In addition, the Kimberley boasts an extraordinarily large tidal range of more than ten metres. This results in two major effects; an extensive tidal zone, and strong currents, exceeding five knots at times. The currents also stir up silts deposited by the large rivers of the Kimberley, causing high water turbidity, particularly inshore during Spring Tides.

Dr Gerald Allen and Roger Steene, in their excellent Indo-Pacific Coral Reef Field Guide state that “Increased sea temperatures have only had adverse effects since 1980, when El-Nino boosted temperatures exceeded the thermal tolerance of corals and their symbiotic algae.” When the upper limit of heat tolerance is reached by the algae that give corals their colour, deaths will occur with the corresponding bleaching of the coral host. Besides colour, the algae also provide sugars and other nutrients leaked into the tissue of the coral host. Global warming is believed to be a major factor in coral bleaching, and may herald the beginning of the end of coral reefs as we know them.

Kimberley marine fauna consists of a largely Indo-West Pacific element, typical of Northern Australia marine faunas. Many species are either widespread throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, or more confined to the Indo-Malaysian, New Guinea and Australian sub-province1. This coast boasts a high diversity of corals and marine molluscs, which are at severe risk if sea temperatures are raised due to global warming. Click here for marine images.

To date, exploration in the marine science of the Kimberley coast has been limited by time and funding, thus there no doubt remains much to be discovered. Our own explorations have revealed many species known to exist elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific, but also found on the Kimberley coast.

There is exciting work to be done on identification of all manner of marine and terrestrial flora and fauna, including sponges, anemones, nudibranches, flatworms, corals, marine flora, crustaceans, acquatic insects and fish.

SCUBA diving community united in search for threatened coral

Not waiting for the National Marine Fisheries Service to make their determination on the Reef Rescue petition to designate most of Palm Beach County as critical habitat for ESA listed coral, the local dive community embarks on a search for more staghorn coral colonies.

The struggle to gain federal habitat protection for the reefs offshore of the Town of Palm Beach is chronicled below in previous Reef Rescue blogs. The Florida Reef Tract along the east coast, south of the Boynton Beach Inlet is now designated critical habitat essential for the survival of ESA listed elkhorn and staghorn corals. Reef Rescue has petitioned the federal government to afford the same protections to the coral reefs offshore of the Town of Palm Beach.

In Palm Beach, they say the rules should be different

Federal habitat protection along the east coast of Florida extends from a depth of 6 out to 98 feet deep. All reef stuctures capable of supporting elkhorn and staghorn coral within the designated area are protected. Unable to deny the existence of the largest stand of staghorn coral in Palm Beach County, recently discovered offshore of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, the Town of Palm Beach backed down on their opposition to habitat protection for some – not all of the neighboring reefs.

The catch – off the Town of Palm Beach they say nothing in less than 45 feet of water should be protected. Why? Not much has changed – the reefs interfere with the town’s beach renourishment projects – or so they claim.

The dive community’s search for new staghorn locations is designed to negate Palm Beach’s opposition. Since, once staghorn is found in less than 45 feet of water or anywhere north of Breakers (deep) Reef another of the town’s contrived excuses unravels.

Check with your dive operator for details, some are offering rewards. All staghorn sightings must be reported to Reef Rescue and verified.

This trip to the aquarium was so incredible! Watching the fish swim around is very peaceful and relaxing. The patterns and textures on all of the fish were so vibrant and different from one another. The octopus was really strange. It looks like an alien out of a movie, maybe because of the way the body is shaped. At one point the octopus held onto a rock and blew out making the webs between its tentacles blow up like a balloon! Entertainment central!

It was really difficult to get a good shot, but that was sort of the fun of it. If you do go there, expect to be shooting in low lighting conditions, at least in some of the tanks, and work on your panning skills! I really want to go back again at some point. It was well worth the trip!

People with home aquariums are a unique breed. I know first hand. My wife’s cousin has 5 tanks up and running and a room in the basement in the works that will rival any home aquarium that I’ve ever seen. His love for all things aquatic is past the point of obsession. Like most proud parents, the need to share and show off said aquariums often leads to wallet-folios and sessions huddled around the small 2″ screen of a point and shoot digital. It also leads to such expressions as “You should see it up close” or “the colors really look better in person”. This is where Menagerie Studio can help out. Below are some home aquarium photographs we’ve taken. If you would like to show off your love in all it’s glory please feel free to contact us. We’d love to help.
