By this time you’ve already heard that our President, Barack Obama, a man who ran on a platform of hope and change, is getting us deeper into Afghanistan. Isn’t Al-Qaeda in Pakistan? And, if the Soviets couldn’t win there, why can we? A country owned by China with disastrous financials (that’s us, in case you didn’t recognize your homeland).

If you join the armed forces to serve your country, to pay your bills, you’re entering Hotel California. It seems you can never leave. You jumpily wait for people to attack you or detonate IEDs. Coming home to a country that pays you lip service, but doesn’t give a rip because people can’t find a job. If you come home at all. And if you do return, you’re likely traumatized.

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs is paying record bonuses and their Chairman Lloyd Blankfein says the firm is doing God’s work. Huh? What deity does Mr. Blankfein pray to who wants to see the populace suffer? Used to be Wall Street helped build America, now traders just profit off exotic investment instruments.

But there is good news (sarcasm alert!). The enormous financial outlay of the 8+ year war has brought into sharp focus Bagram Airfield, where off-duty soldiers can obtain everything from Kyrgyz massages to purchase a BK burger. Including a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. According to AFP reports, the dealer for those away from the front lines sells about 4 motorcycles a month to U.S. servicemen. With another 30,000 troops being deployed, and most of them set to take off or land on Bagram’s runway in route to fight the Taliban it means H-D should expect a sales increase proportional with the troop surge. In fact, I just read a post on the H-D forum from a soldier who bought a 2009 Night Train yesterday. Congrats Army_Train85 and thank you for your service!!

Obama’s speech wasn’t all that inspirational for me, but he did state (you can read the full text of his speech here) that sending the extra troops will cost the U.S. military $30 billion dollars this year — or $1 million for each newly deployed soldier. That’s high-finance and hard for me to wrap my head around it. In fact, it’s difficult for me to understand the cost ($28 a head) of each and every meal prepared for U.S. soldiers on the base cost more than most Afghans earn in a month. That alone might explain the attraction to the Taliban-linked narco-terrorists. Sigh. I wish there was a better way…

At any rate, as Bagram turns into a military “boom-town”…H-D is poised to take advantage.

Lena is an extraordinary publisher and interested in many different subjects and of course – photography. Today I have received an invitation for a photography auction that I’d like to share with you.

Dear Friends,

As some of you already know, Welcome, and most particularly our art director Gregory Wakabayashi has been involved for some years in the organization of a photography auction that raises money for a children’s hospital in Cambodia. Each year some of our photographers are involved (Amy Arbus, Eric Meola, Douglas Kirkland this year). Each year Greg creates an email announcement under our name. Attached is this year’s which I hope you will all share with everyone you know.

And, please recognize that, although only some of you live in New York, everyone can participate. For more information about the auction and the Angkor Children’s Hospital, please go to www.fwab.org

Many thanks.

Love Freo is pleased about being a winner in Corbis’ Creatives Behind the Lens competition, which originated in Europe three years ago and has been held in Australia for the first time. The winning photograph (‘South Beach’) was taken at a hazy early morning down at South Beach last autumn. While the Melbourne Man went for a swim a rainbow appeared in the haze and I was just so glad I had brought my camera. Together with the very few other early morning dog walkers I marveled at this beautiful performance of nature.

The 47 national winners were invited to Sydney, where our work was unveiled at a private view at the Museum of Contemporary Arts last week, followed by a party at one of the best locations in Australia – MCA’s rooftop balcony right at Circular Quay with stunning views over the harbour, Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Corbis is planning to bring the exhibition to Perth early next year and is looking for interesting locations. I suggested Creatures Loft and Fremantle Arts Centre, but if you have other ideas, please let me know and I’ll forward them.

Something Old, Something New, Something Fast My former colleague from Corbis Marco Oonk is a smart g

Something Old, Something New, Something Fast

My former colleague from Corbis Marco Oonk is a smart guy. He just launched Fast Media Magazine and his new idea is gaining traction very quickly.

Marco is well respected and a long time industry professional and that certainly plays into his success. Let me tell you about his new venture and why I think this is a great thing.

What’s it all about? Fast Media Magazine is about connecting media content owners, movers and users in a debate about the future and through a directory. As media has been facing dramatic shifts from print to online there is significant pressure on all licensing models dealing with content: stock, image, footage and music.

Marco doesn’t like to call what he does a blog, he calls it a magazine. The content is a collection in the form of a multitude of opinions from the three sides of content: Creators, providers and users.

Why would this be important to you? Much like the Microstock concept wasn’t developed by a stock photography industry professional the next big concept changing the licensing world might come from somewhere outside the industry. Fast Media Magazine wants to be ahead of this discussion and engage movers and shakers so that a trend can be spotted as it develops.

Why I think there is a place for this. There is very little out there that deals with the multiple challenges and sides of content creation, distribution and use. Each of these entities have their own individual industry associations that deal with their unique aspects. The coming together can at times be a little difficult as it’s well documented in the past. For example the interests of content creating photographers and big name stock distributors like Getty or Corbis don’t always seem to line up although it would be in their best interest to collaborate effectively.

One of the things that I learned when working at a corporation is that you fight two battles. You have the internal aspect where you need to convince the very people that hired you that you are doing the right things but in reality the bigger battle is the market place. It’s out there that our focus needs to be. So if Fast Media Magazine can take the internal battles and collectively find a voice, an opinion and/or an outlet than that would be terrific and for the greatest good of all.

I’ll be following him for sure and you will be hearing about him on this blog. Here is a link to an article about them and here is the link to the website .

So how do you immortalize YOU?

Barely a month ago in our advertising class, we were asked by our professor to design the book covers of our autobiographies. Being the adobe-phobic (just a term I playfully coined) that I always am, I responded with a slightly heavy heart.

But thank God for Microsoft Publisher 2007!!! Armed with stock photos from getty image, corbis, deviantart, and google images, I was able to strut my stuff. Because of that experience I learned the importance of resourcefulness. My book cover may not be the best but I am so proud of it because it’s a product of a gargantuan amount of time and effort. And now, I am thankful that we were given the chance of designing our very own book cover ’cause by doing so, I was able to reflect on my personality. I was able to ask myself who I really was, what I really wanted to be… Oh no. Now, I’m getting emo.

Now moving on to the concept. I am fun-loving gal who loves kikay stuff and all (just look at the title ), so I picture my book cover to in pink (the kikay color). Also, I want to reach a wide range of audience so I decided to tell my story in Filipino. The book is an easy read with lots of pictures to make it a little more interesting.

I really hope to learn Photoshop STAT.

So for some guys out there who is adobe-phobic like me, fret no more. There are other programs out there that are just waiting to be used and discovered. Quoting Professor Ardivilla, “It’s not about the weapon, it’s about the warrior.”

Etisalat has blocked access to the Corbis website in the UAE, one of the world’s largest picture libraries.

The resource of stock film and photography footage comprising more than a 100 million images, is privately owned by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and is a vital art-buying tool for the region’s ad agencies and publishing industry.

It is not known why Corbis has suddenly fallen foul of Etisalat’s censorship guidelines, having been freely available without restriction for several years, though sources say the company is currently in talks with the telco giant to get its site unblocked.

The latest incident adds to an upsurge in criticism of Etisalat’s policies.

In July the company rendered the UAE’s Blackberry devices inoperable for several days after sending them a battery sapping ‘performance enhancement patch’.

The patch was revealed to be spyware potentially allowing Etisalat access to texts and emails sent by customers.

“…‘Africa’ is the biggest, longest, most powerful brainwashing operation that photojournalists have gladly contributed to with open arms.”

I recently said this on Twitter, and the responses I received to it were – for lack of a much better description a little shocking to me.

To set the stage, the quote is a para-phrase from the blog of Paul Melcher, one which continuously provides cutting insights into the workings of the photo industry. Mainly it deals with the deep pools of shit that are Getty and Corbis, but occasionally he drifts into the real world dynamics of how photography effects both perception and business.

His opening paragraph was yet another real world point that I completely agreed upon with vigour…

“I do not want to see another photo essay, multimedia or any visual on dying Africans. Never, ever again. Enough. I understand that it makes for compelling images, that it seems that the photographers care, but it presents such a distorted vision of this beautiful continent. Not every country is at war, not every African is an orphan dying of aids or malnutrition. Not everyone lives in a broken down shaft wearing nothing more than rip jeans.”

Let me preemptively defend the context of his point. It’s not that photojournalists are reporting on the crisis’, that isn’t the problem. It is that it is all they focus on – as if Africa (an entire continent no less) has no positivity to report on.

It means that the media blankets the public perception of the entire continent, spiraling it towards mockery because there is so much of it that it loses both impact and meaning. It also borders on an incomprehensible form of racism because all that we are being fed – and I mean, fed – as a public are these images.

Our everyday perceptions of Africa are being warped.

I can certainly be honest, hold my hand up and say that the television adverts of fly ridden children have zero impact on me – the reason why being that I’ve seen them too many fucking times. They used to have an impact, much like the DOE adverts they have over here in Northern Ireland for drink driving. The first time shocks you but as you see it, the emotions dull from their initial polish.

I wouldn’t pretend to be an expert on the subject, but it’s clear to see that the majority of photojournalism these days is suffering from being as bland as its competition – using the above situation as a prime example. There’s an overabundance of ‘one sided’ reportage in Africa whereby all we see is famine, grief, poverty and depression.

Surely the greatest goal as a photographer in this situation would be to document the brightest lights amongst the blackest night – to coin a phrase. The power in a photograph is that you believe it – you can’t see past the edges of the frame and so the photojournalist has responsibilities to tell the truth.

Are they being met?

Agenzia storica. Una fine repentina dentro una crisi prevedibile. In digitale una foto vale meno: ni

Agenzia storica.

Scannerul, nu paşaportul, of course.

Announcing my next Free Call.

For those who have been following the blog, I am facilitating a monthly FREE call that is open for anyone to join.

When: September 15, 2009 at 5PM PST and 8PM EST

As we are getting close to the end of the summer I thought we all could use a little dusting off. It’s back to business. So why not start with your favorite activity (just kidding) – which is cold calls, getting people on the phone, negotiating, schmoozing, asking for the job and much, much more.

Are you struggling and can’t quite motivate yourself to pick up that phone? Do you make the calls and do you set yourself a quota of daily or weekly cold calls to potential or follow up calls to existing clients? Do you feel awkward when you finally get someone on the phone and don’t quite know what to say? Do you think you sound like an alien and not as genuine as you really are? Is it challenging for you to negotiate and ask for the job (the close)?

Whom better can I find than Peter Adams to give us a lending hand with these challenges. He was one of my favorite sales people at Corbis and he has answers for all of the above. I’ve been fortunate enough and worked with Peter. He and I did a killer presentation over at his account Microsoft. When I saw the kind of relationship he had built with his clients and how much they trusted his judgment I realized just how good this man is at what he does. There is someone even I want to learn from.

Here’s some background on Peter:

Peter Adams was reigning top sales person at Corbis for 3 years in a row where he worked for nine years. Out of 21 worldwide offices and being located in Seattle that is a very respectable achievement. He was the exclusive sales liasion to the entire Microsoft account as per personal request of Bill Gates.

Today he is the sales director of Zooppa, which he’ll tell us a little bit about. Zooppa’s tagline is “Advertising gone Social.” Interesting trivia: The former Sr. VP of Sales from Corbis Wil Merritt is the CEO from Zooppa and Peter’s boss (again).

So please join us for the most fun sales training call that you probably will ever listen to. I will interview Peter for 30 minutes and afterward we open the call for your specific questions.

What is covered: Peter will reveal some of his secrets that make him so successful at sales. For the sales call chicken amongst you I am letting you in on one of my secrets. Sales is much easier than you think and you can acquire the skills it takes relatively easy. To be a good sales person you have to have a few attributes that we will be covering in the call.

So, dust yourself off, make a commitment to making those cold calls and start by signing up right here: http://Photosecrets.biz

As a reminder: All calls are recorded and all registered participants will receive a link to the call the following day. That way our International subscribers can take advantage of this Free Call and you can listen to it over and over again until you will be a furious sales pro yourself.

Here’s the sign-up: Http://Photosecrets.biz

DAVID JOLLY, de Paris, para o The New York Times.

A reportagem do correspodente (Lament for a Dying Field: Photojournalism) relata o atual panorama crítico da profissão.

Para John G. Morris – aposentado editor de foto cujo currículo inclui anos no The New York Times, revista Life e no The Washington Post – “Esta não é uma nova tendência; é a continuação de uma velha”. “Tenho 92 anos e sobrevivi a muitas crises no fotojornalismo.

(Dados e depoimentos – tradução livre: Lament for a Dying Field: Photojournalism)
