In King Lear, Shakespeare explores a considerable range of issues. He explores many aspects of human

In King Lear, Shakespeare explores a considerable range of issues. He explores many aspects of human nature and asks to what extent identity and fate are governed by nature. He also questions what people owe to each other. For instance, in the first act, when Lear challenges each of his three daughters to demonstrate how much they love him, Shakespeare encourages his audience to think about how much a child owes to their parent. Goneril and Reagan speak of their love for their father, suggesting that their relationship to him and their position as his daughters overrides every other aspect of their lives. In other words, their speeches suggest that no other relationship or role is more important. Of course, their speeches are elaborate and obviously exaggerated. They are obviously not sincere. Cordelia, on the other hand, provides an answer to her father’s challenge that is not only entirely sensible but entirely consistent with 16th century philosophical ideas pertaining to kingship. Aside from challenging his daughter to declare love for her father, Lear is also challenging his child, third in line to the throne, to persuade him to divide his kingdom. In fact, Cordelia should be able to say ‘nothing’ that would convince her father to divide his kingdom because, according to Christian philosophy of the day, it goes against God’s law to divide a kingdom that way; Lear should not, in fact, abdicate the responsibilities of his role as king (that is also against God’s law), and upon his death, he should pass the throne to his eldest surviving child, without dividing any part of it. Lear’s daughters also, again according to the philosophy of Shakespeare’s day, also owe allegiance to their husbands, which Cordelia, in fact, points out.

It is interesting to consider, also, the behavior of the older characters in the play, specifically Lear and the Earl of Gloucester. Shakespeare develops two plots within the play, one that focuses upon King Lear and his daughters, and the other that focuses upon the Earl of Gloucester and his two sons, his legitimate son, Edgar, and his legitimate son and the instigator of much of the treachery within the play, Gloucester’s illegitimate son, Edmund.

Both Lear and Gloucester treat their children badly. In Lear’s case, there’s suggestion that he was a domineering, even perhaps an abusive parent. Modern audiences might, for instance, sympathize with Goneril and Regan, at least initially, as Lear does, indeed, seem to be rather unreasonable. The banishment of Cordelia, of course, emphasizes how little he knows himself and how rash and ill-tempered he can be.

Lear’s madness, however, can be seen as the result, not so much of his nature, but his defiance of natural order. By trying to impose his will on to others in such a dramatic way, while at the same time, abdicating all responsibility and accountability (by abdicating his throne) he defies the natural order of things and sets himself apart from his own nature.

We can look to Edmund as an interesting parallel to Lear in the sense that he (Edmund) openly embraces what for him is the natural order; as the bastard son, he is considered to be tainted, at least in comparison to Edgar, and even his own father is crude in speaking about the extra-marital relationship that lead to his birth. Edmund frequently invokes nature and identifies his behavior as ‘natural’ given his bastard status.

To some extent, King Lear seems designed to shock its audience into recognizing the complexity of the human experience and the delicacy of the order we impose upon it. When Lear kneels before his daughters, for instance, the sensibility of Shakespeare’s contemporaries must certainly have been shaken. The same effect is achieved, it seems, when Lear abdicates his crown and divides his kingdom. The drama of the play is enhanced by the repeated challenges to the natural order and the resounding implications this has for a Christian audience.

Buffy Anne Summers "The Slayer"

So I have a confession to make. In my oh so hallowed opinion (cough cough) Buffy the Vampire Slayer was, and still is, one of the best television series ever made.

I began watching it when I was 12, waaay back in 1997. From that very first pilot, I was hooked. A gorgeous, sassy blonde that tackled head on both the evils of high school and the insidious vampires (And other creatures) that roamed the night. Along with her tight knit group of friends, Buffy Anne Summers spent Seven Seasons growing up the hard way. On the hell mouth.

Now, this show has a massive and extremely loyal cult following. Despite the show wrapping up several years ago, people are still chatting daily about the show. Interviews of the stars on Youtube still get thousands of hits, comic books and novels are still being created along with so many fan-made websites a person couldn’t possibly have time to look at them all. Why? Many people turn their nose up when they hear anyone mention this show. I think thats sad. They really are missing out on a true gem.

Over the years, in an intricately woven, poignant plot written beautifully by creator Joss Whedon, we watch Buffy and her crew (Giles her Watcher, Xander and Willow her two best friends) grow up in Sunnydale. We watch them fight evil in the form of supernatural forces – vampires, werewolves, witches, demons and curses to name but a few. The show started with a very tongue in cheek feel to it, quite light, with lots of humour. Well as the years went by the quick, flippant jokes never stopped flowing, but the show grew up and so did it’s characters. Everything became darker, the themes went from mildly childish to unabashedly adult.

Here’s a few things that happened to shape this show:

Willow, Buffy’s best friend goes from a geeky little schoolgirl crushing on her friend Xander to the girlfriend of a werewolf named Oz who plays guitar in a rock band. She later becomes a hardcore Witch, and a lesbian after Oz leaves her. She falls in love with a fellow Witch called Tara who is later shot and killed, causing Willow to lose her sanity and almost end the world through her powers.

Xander, Buffy’s other best friend throughout the series, goes from a dorky teen always trying to pick up chicks, to dating the most popular (If not bitchy) girl in school, Cordelia. He later goes on to become a builder after many failed career attempts, and falls in love with an ex vengeance demon named Anya. During the final season he loses one eye when it was gouged from his face by a minion of The First Evil. But throughout, Xander continues to be absolutely hilarious, his sense of humour really making the show what it is.

Then there’s Giles. Buffy’s stuffy British Watcher sent to guide her through the perils of slaying, who ends up becoming more a friend and father figure. Giles starts off very rigid, but throughout the seasons his dry sense of humour becomes his main trait. He falls in love with Jenny, a gypsy, who is murdered by Angel. Her body is left in his bed for him to find, an event that haunts him forevermore.

And then there is Buffy herself. Buffy fall’s completely in love with Angel. He is a vampire, but the only one in the world with a soul. He loses his soul through one moment of happiness with Buffy (Take a guess at how ) and turns evil, forcing Buffy to kill him after he goes on a mass killing spree. Angel is brought back from hell by The Powers That Be, but can no longer be with Buffy due to the risk of him losing his soul again. He leaves Sunnydale, but neither of them ever get over loving each other. Along with that, Buffy dies twice and is brought back, she gets kicked out of school and runs away from home, priests insert a Sister into her family one day using magic and most tragic of all, her Mother dies from complications associated with cancer. From that you see a very human superhero. She grieves, she has to pay the mortgage, she has to make sure her sister does her homework, all the while dropping out of College and working at a fast food joint.

The show is a masterpiece of darkness and humour, of the unexpected and the every day stresses of life. It is sex and sin and wit, but most of all, heart.

Buffy crew - Season 2

I will forevermore adore this show, because it truly is brilliant. I have every episode on DVD, and continue to watch the show on and off whenever I need a pick me up.

To start off, yes, technically I am blogging about my diseased cat. The underlying theme, however, is the power of social media. And cats.

I have two cats. Fiyero and Cordelia. I’m sure geeks everywhere just identified with one or both of their names and either giggled or scoffed. They are siblings from my parent’s farm. Fiyero is bigger, used to chase lambs in the flats plains of southern Iowa, speaks constantly, eats everything and sometimes massages my back. Cordelia, on the other hand, is tiny, speaks very rarely, walks on her hind legs like a ferret and is a bit of a princess. This post will focus on her.

Cordi was a peculiar kitten. To say she was anti-social would be an understatement. I’m pretty sure she hid under a radiator for 8 months straight. When she finally attempted to be social, she was a bit…silly. My friends cruelly called her Cordi Keller because she sometimes ran face-first into walls. The real reason for this was not that she was deaf and/or blind (I became certain as she grew older) but that she was easily excitable and afraid of pretty much anything that was a noun. All of this back story is relevant because it helps you to understand what a perfect tiny precious little creature she is.

Cordelia had some goobers in her eyes this week. She has struggled with ucky eyes on and off her whole life (she has a flat face) but it has never been a serious issue, I just have to help her clean them sometimes. Friday when I came home for lunch, she was coyly winking at me. In fact, she couldn’t stop winking. She couldn’t open her eye at all. It was pink and goopy and gross. I could not get her into our regular vet and she needed immediate attention. What was I to do?!

That’s when I turned to the popular micro-blogging platform know as Twitter. My Tweet was simple:

Notice Cordi in the upper left-hand corner of my background.

The responses were amazing! I was blown away by how many people responded with recommendations. The most responses came for Heartland Animal Hospital. I gave them a call only to find that they stopped taking appointments at 5:00, but they would see if they could fit us in at 5:15. I was impressed!

The vet was wonderful and even won the attentions of Cordi (she only hissed once!), which is no easy task. I was secretly hoping she would get to wear a kitty eye patch for a few days, but instead we just have to rub medical goop in her eyes. The rates were reasonable and overall it was a grand experience. Cordelia is doing much better.

The vet asked me how I chose his clinic, and I told him I asked for recommendations on Twitter. He responded with “I didn’t know we were on tweeter.” I’m 98% sure he mispronounced it on purpose, which is beside the point. We had a great conversation about how it works and how it is affecting business. He said that most of their business comes from word-of-mouth, and we talked briefly about how word-of-mouth is changing because of social media, Twitter in particular.

Cordi at Heartland Animal Hospital

According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Cordeilla was the youngest of the three daughters of King Lear and the only one to remain loyal to her father.

She has a similar feel to the romantic Cordelia, in fact, it is even argued that Cordelia came from Cordula, but I will go further into that in a different entry in the future. For now, the focus is on the lovely Cordula. According to legend, St. Cordula of Cologne was one of the 11,000 companions of St. Ursula, when her friends were being massacred, Cordula cowardly hid in fear and survived, feeling guilty that she survived while her friends were dead, she presented herself to the Huns the next day and was promptly executed. Supposedly Albert the Great found her remains hundreds of years later. Her body was in perfect condition and on her head was written “Cordula, Queen and Virgin.” Her feast day is October 22.

The name is believed to be derived from the Late Latin cor, cordis meaning “heart” with the diminutive feminine suffix -ula attached to the end, hence “little heart.” It has been a common enough name in Germany, due to the popularity of the Saint’s cult.

Cordula was an epic German poem written by Max Waldau in 1854. It is also the name of an orchid from the slipper orchid genus.

Other forms of the name include Kordula which is another form used in Germany but is also used in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The Slavic diminutive forms are Kordulka, Dula, Dulka and Dalinka.

In “King Lear,” Regan remarked about her father:

He hath ever but slenderly known himself. (Act I, Scene 1)

Regan said this after Lear disowned Cordelia, the daughter who loved him the most, in a fit of rage.

Cordelia had refused to pay Lear lavish compliments like her sisters. “I love your majesty according to my bond; nor more nor less.”

“He hath ever but slenderly known himself.”

Our eyes cannot see themselves.

In commenting on Luke 6:41, Saint Basil pointed this out.

In truth, self-knowledge seems the most important of all.

For the eye, looking at outward things, fails to exercise the sight upon itself.

Our understanding also, though very quick in apprehending the the sin of another, is slow to perceive its own defects.

Accusing oneself of sin is painful and difficult. It is also the most liberating thing we can do.

Once we have accused ourselves of sin, we can cry out to God for mercy. He will forgive.
