My work laptop…is awesome! So, everything I said about Dell computers in my last post does not apply to their SMB machines. The manager of my company wanted me to have a lighter machine, so it doesn’t have as big a screen as I would like, but the E6400 does have:

a 14″ screen

4GB RAM

2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo P9600

256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS

backlit keyboard, bluetooth, wireless n

Like I said, this computer is awesome! With Windows 7 now on it, and XP mode for our older software and hardware (aka, scanner), the machine has not had a hiccup. It does everything I need, and just having a machine like that is worth its weight in gold. I don’t game on this machine, so I haven’t stressed it out in that regard. I do have a DWF program though, and it flies compared to our work desktops.

We’ve been providing news on the hottest PC notebook to come out in years as it comes and rather than write a whole bunch of words here, I will just let the specs speak for themselves.

Core 2 Duo 1.4 Ghz ULV processor (kind of on the weak side, compared to the MacBook Air’s 1.8 and 2.0 Ghz C2D)

4 GB DDR3 800 Mhz RAM

128 GB Solid State Disk (SSD)

13.4″ WLED screen with 1366 x 768 resolution

Intel GS45 integrated graphics

2 USB (1 more than the MBA)

Mini Display-port

802.11n & Bluetooth

Webcam

User replaceable battery in two options: 20 watt/hr = two and a half hours after full charge, or a 40 watt/hr = about 5 hours (super thin battery and its swappable makes the MBA look sad)

Dimensions: 0.4″ x 13.39″ x 10.78″ (thinner than the MBA…can notebooks get any thinner than this?)

3.2 pounds (this thing is heavier than my HP Mini netbook! that weighs only 2.38 lbs)

Runs Windows 7

Price: $1799

Release date: TBA, but Dell says in time for the holidays

PC World was able to nudge some prototype information from Dell. Here is what the Dell Adamo XPS could have been.

- 4″ Multi-touch LCD touchpad

- Touch capacity keyboard (no pressing feed-back would be awkward…)

My dad complained about his PC speed that come sooo slow, so I guess I have to change the processor with the better one, mine was Single Core Intel Processor and soon I changed it with Dual Core. But I confused whether Dual core is better or Core 2 duo does.

It’s a bit confusing what’s so special about Intel Core 2 Duo
Just a note that both Dual core and Core 2 Duo have used 2 processors work together, after I searched a little, I found that Dual core has special features

- Bigger cache
- Virtualization
- Faster Access

So Core 2 duo need less power and has faster performance.
And of course more expensive than Dual Core.

As an incidental byproduct of designing the first of my new series of sessions, I had two machine sitting side by side exporting MP3 from Mind Workstation.

The contenders were a Celeron E1500 @2.2GHz (XP/3.5GB RAM) and a Core 2 Duo E4500 @2.2Ghz. (Win2K/2GB RAM).

I neglected to note actual times, but that’s not important, because these have so much random content that they export barely quicker than real time. Starting both at the same instant they finish so closely together that I couldn’t tell which was the first to report success. The Celeron showed slightly higher CPU usage, which was not as well balanced as the Core 2’s utilisation.

So, it would be fair to say, assuming a single task running, MP3 export from MWS is closely tied to the CPU speed and not so dependent on architecture, memory, OS or anything much else.

Back to the studio!

Cheers,
Craig

P.S. Further editing on my laptop, a Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium machine, provided the opportunity to compare clock rates. The laptop came in about 15% slower than the desktops.

AshMan says…

As an owner of a Acer Aspire One netbook, I’ve grown used to the convenience of being able to carry around a laptop which is capable of most daily tasks (also the ability to run Windows 7) but also being able to not notice that I have a laptop in my bag all of the time.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1820PT - $1599

A problem I have found however that for when I’m in a meeting or lectures at University I would prefer to have something which I could just scribble notes on. Acer has just announced a solution to my problems…the Acer Aspire 1820PT Timeline.

This ultra portable features:

A ulra-low-voltage Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Su7300 (1.2Ghz)

Windows 7 Home Premium

11.6″ WXGA Glare Multi-Touch Widescreen

2GB DDR3-1066 Memory

250GB Hard Drive

802.11 a/b/g/Draft-N Wireless

Gigabit Ethernet

Bluetooth

Webcam

8Hour Battery

VGA & HDMI

1 Year Warranty

This is a pretty good package for only $AUD1599 RRP. Connectivity also includes gigabit Ethernet if you ever required to transfer large files to or from the tablet.

An added feature and the first of many similar laptops to come is the multi touch tablet screen. This allows you to use the touch features built into Windows 7 to control and interact. A stylus is also included providing the ability to neatly write memos directly into the provided software from Acer (Touch Portal and Touch Memo) or directly into Microsoft’s One Note.

Acer Aspire Timelin 1820PT - $1599

This is looks to be a promising laptop and the return of a style of laptop which was trying to break into the market in 2002 where Acer was at the leading edge with the C110. I was lucky enough to be the first student in the world to test the C110 and hope to have a review of this laptop soon. So stay posted!

Apple Inc. beat Wall Street expectations earlier this week when they announced their Q4′09 earnings. Considered to be the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, Apple Inc. simply asks “What recession?” Today, Apple Inc. continued their spectacular October when they announced several new products across their computer line.

The Mac Mini was one of the computer models that got an upgrade. The $799 has the 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM (up from 2GB) but the same 320GB hard drive. Both price points still have the GeForce 9400M GPU and 8x SuperDrive. In addition to the upgrades to the Mac Mini line, there is now a “Server Edition” of the Mac Mini that forgoes the 8x SuperDrive and instead packs in TWO 500GB hard drives. This $999 model packs a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and GeForce 9400M GPU. Snow Leopard Server is included of course.

Next, Apple updated the iMac line with two screen size choices (21.5 inches or 27 inches) that are 16:9 displays and are all-aluminum bodies. Both have IPS panels that are LED-backlit and have a 178-degree viewing angle. Also both models come with wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse at no additional cost. Starting at $1199, the 21.5 inch has a 1920×1080 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM standard (upgradable to 8GB), 500GB hard drive (1 & 2TB options available at $1499 price point), andGeForce 9400M GPU (ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU option available at $1499 price point). At $1699, the 27 inch has a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU (upgradable to ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU). Finally, at $1999 the 27 inch comes with the 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 (upgradable to 2.8GHz Core i7), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU. All models have 4 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, one FireWire 800 port, and SD card slot (finally), and 8x SuperDrive. The 27 inch has a video-in.

The low-end Macbook gets a makeover with a new white unibody polycarbonate design (similar to Macbook Pros), built-in 7 hour battery, LED-backlit display, Glass Multi-Touch trackpad, 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM (upgradable to 4GB), 250GB hard drive (upgradable to 500GB), and GeForce 9400M GPU starting at $999.

Perhaps the most intriguing announcement today is the new Magic Mouse (no longer “Mighty”) for $69. It is the first multitouch wireless mouse on the market meaning you use your fingers to scroll, swipe, and click. The Magic Mouse is supposed to last 4 months on AA batteries.

Apple also revamped their remote with a new aluminum finish that is kinda like the bastard child of the iPod Nano and the old iPod Shuffle. It can control your iPod, iPhone, and/or Mac for $19.

Lastly, Apple updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for better performance.

I had a friend ask me last night if Windows 7 runs better than XP, and I did not know. I knew that

I had a friend ask me last night if Windows 7 runs better than XP, and I did not know. I knew that it ran better than Vista, so I went to work.

First my laptop has never known Windows XP and it never will, I do not like XP and prefer Vista over it and love 7 over both of them. Some would say I am nuts but as a computer technician the newer versions of Windows make my life easier. This laptop is a Compaq Presario C700 (C712NR) with 2Gb of Ram and an Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 running at 2.16 GHz this also runs an Intel Mobile 965 Express Graphics Chipset. The laptop came with Vista Home Premium 32bit and I installed Windows 7 Enterprize 32bit. Below is the Windows Experience Index from Vista. Please note that the Index range is from 1.0 to 5.9 in Vista.

Windows Experience Index form Vista

As you can see the laptop does ok but below is the Windows Experience Index from 7 it seems like there is not much of a difference. Please note that in 7 the Index range is from 1.0 to 7.9 and that might be why the numbers are different.

Windows Experience Index from 7

The difference in the numbers is interesting however I also ran Pass Mark Performance Test in both operating systems. I figured this would give me a good answer if Windows 7 was in fact faster than Vista. In Vista the Performance Test got a total score of 537.8 while in 7 it got a total of 590.4 I think these numbers speak for themselves. Vista is slower than 7 the benchmark proves this. So then what about Windows XP?

Well my father has a computer that I figured would be a great it is a home built machine with an Asus KV8 SE Deluxe motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ running at 2.2GHz and with 2Gb or Ram and an ATI X800 XT All-in-Wonder. It already has Windows XP installed and it has never known Vista, so I partitioned the hard drive and installed Windows 7 Enterprize 32bit. Pictured below is the Windows Experience Index from Windows 7

Windows Experience Index in Windows 7

As before I ran the Pass Mark Performance Test on both operating systems and here are the results you have been waiting for. Windows 7 got a total score of 390.1 where Windows XP got a total score of 440.6 XP did better in 2D and 3D graphics than 7 and that could be do to the lack of proper driver support, as time goes on im sure that gap will close. Really XP does not do that much better than 7 but it is a little faster. Still my mother was using Windows 7 for the first time today on my fathers computer and really liked it and wants to use it more, and she has never used Vista.

So Windows 7 is faster than Vista but just a little slower than XP, not bad Microsoft, not bad at all. If you are thinking of making the jump to Windows 7 the numbers speak for themselves, go for it. The new Features and the fact that it is more energy efficient make Windows 7 worth the upgrade, even if it is a little slower than XP.
