Moviehole’s been tipped off that South African stunner Tanit Phoenix (“Lord of War”, “Gallowalker”) has joined the cast of direct-to-disc sequel “Lost Boys : The Thirst”, now lensing in Cape Town, SA.

Phoenix, whose foxy face and frame can be seen often in men’s mags, will play the part of Gwen, a wealthy romance novelist who enlists the help of vampire-hunter/surfboard shaper Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman) to track down a family member whose gone missing.

Needless to say – considering Ms Phoenix has been recruited to play her – Gwen’s a dead-set hottie that’s bound to raise Frog’s, er, stake.

Phoenix joins the abovementioned Feldman, Jamison Newlander, Sean Cameron Michael, and Seb Catang for the Dario Piana-directed sequel, out next year via Warner Premiere.

Warner Premiere’s upcoming Lost Boys 3: The Thirst has found its leading lady in actress/model Tanit Phoenix according to STYD.

The South African model revealed the news via her MySpace page. She’ll play Gwen Liebling, a vampire-romance novelist who calls upon Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman) to rescue her son Peter from the vampire known as DJ Dusk. He gathers up a bloodsucker-killing team and heads into battle.

Shooting has begun in South Africa with Dario Piana based on a script by Evan Charno.

News recently popped that Lost Boys 3: The Thirst was in the works with Corey Feldman coming back as Edgar Frog.

Directed by Dario Piana, the story follows veteran vampire hunter Edgar Frog, who finds himself destitute and almost friendless. Just when he thinks his life has hit rock bottom, wealthy vampire-romance novelist Gwen Liebling offers him a small fortune to go on the vampire hunt of a lifetime and rescue her son Peter from the Alpha Vampire D.J. Dusk. With the help of his friends Zoe, Lars and Blake, Edgar heads into a bloody battle to exterminate evil.

The plan is to reunite Edgar with his brother Alan, which will find actor Jamison Newlander returning to the series.

MovieWeb recently caught up with Feldman to discuss the upcoming direct-to-DVD film. He told us that he’d reconciled with his on-again, off-again partner in crime Corey Haim, but he wasn’t sure if Haim would return in Lost Boys 3: The Thirst.

Haim is in fact looking to come back for Part 4, in which Sam Emerson will play a huge part in the storyline. Haim said that there are certain stipulations in bringing his beloved character back to the small screen as he was personally unhappy with the direction the second film took. He will have some say over the character’s personal arc this fourth time around.

He also revealed that Warner Premier is planning on making one Lost Boys direct-to-video sequel a year. Though, he thinks this may spoil the original film and its magic. He didn’t mention how big a part in the overall series Sam Emerson would have.

He went on to say that he is very proud of Corey Feldman’s recent accomplishments in both film, music, and the Netflix original series Splatter. Though he is looking forward to Lost Boys 3: The Thirst, he doesn’t think anything will ever be as good as the original. Look for our exclusive video interview coming soon.

Joe Salerno, a well driller excavating geological samples for a university project in the small Florida town of Montverde, is contaminated by a strange liquid that transposes his senses of pain and pleasure. Unaware he has been infected with a dangerous virus, he tries to impress Maria, a pretty waitress at the local diner, who is romantically involved with Allen Greenfield.

Allen’s out-of-town job is affecting his relationship with Maria, so he decides to quit and propose to her. Whe he arrives in Montverde, he finds significant changes there. Maria, who earlier at hinted at marriage, now seems indifferent to it. The town is practically uninhabited and has a much darker air about it, and tattoo parlors and seedy shops have replaced the nice stores that once lined the main street. When Allen begins to investigate, he discovers the dreadful virus has forced the town people into self-mutilation

On a personal level, 1986 was a pretty big year in my life. Arguably the most significant. I was conceived and born within the confines of 1986. Pretty damn important. Despite the importance of this year, I do not remember a damn thing. Based on pictures, though, I was especially adorable.

1986 was also a ridiculously excellent year in popular culture, and making the call on what to present has been one of the hardest decisions of Twenty-Three. But, I have made the call, and so begins this adventure in self punishment.

Stand By Me is a 1986 coming of age film adapted from Stephen King’s novella, The Body. I haven’t read the novella (I do intend to) but the film is so excellent that I’m going to go out on a limb and say something that I will probably never say again in my life: it is impossible that the book could be better.

Adaptation or not, Stand By Me is a perfect balance of drama and comedy, brilliantly scripted and acted, and incredibly genuine. On the ridiculously slim chance that you dislike the film, the scenery is gorgeous so at the very least it’s pretty to look at.

The story follows four boys; Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern on an adventure to find the body of another kid their age who had gone missing a few days earlier. They rag on each other, try to beat the shit out of each other on at least one occasion, narrowly escape death, and bond with one another along the way. Each boy has a fucked up back-story with which they are trying to come to terms (with the exception of Vern, but I get the sense that he’s just pathetic and probably the kind of kid that would be in special ed if he were 12 today), and we watch them come into their own over a two-day mission through the woods.

The film switches beautifully between comedic scenes:

and dramatic scenes (River Phoenix as Chris Chambers seems to be considered the best performance of this film, but tell me that Corey Feldman’s Teddy Duchamp is anything other than excellent here):

And what a line with, “I’m gonna rip your head off and shit down your neck!” I wish I could have thought of shit like that when I was 12. I wish I could think of shit like that now.

I cannot possibly do the film justice. Stand By Me is not my favorite movie, but probably makes almost any top-5 list I could create. It is an amazing piece of cinema, and something I believe everybody needs to watch at least once in his/her life, if for no other reason than to be reminded of a time when you had a gang of friends who would have gotten themselves killed for you without a second thought.

And given an opportunity probably still would, because they know you for who you could be rather than who you are or aren’t.

The film’s final verbal communication with the audience is through an adult Gordie (played by Richard Dreyfus, credited as simply “The Writer”) typing the close of the memoir that Stand By Me exists as. The line reads, “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”

And it’s perfection.

We cruised along Mulholland Drive last night from Encino to the 90068, the Hollywood Hills to our destination over looking the town.

If you haven’t seen the titular David Lynch movie, there may be something wrong with you.

Funny thing is, my friend Bryce, NYC photographer extraordinaire, went to the party destination the night before, thinking it was the right evening. Instead of the party house, he walked into a dinner party at Kyle McLaughlin’s home- star of many a David Lynch projects like Twin Peaks.  Talk about a LA experience.

If you know Lynch’s work- then we have no body switching to report to you than this bit of serendipity way above the sparkling lights of the city.

There is a little known sequel to The Goonies. Seriously. Well, maybe I’m not entirely serious. I guess it isn’t a sequel in the literal sense. More like a spiritual brother. In this case, the older brother was more successful, had more money, had cooler people to hang out with, and everyone agreed that it was awesome. Well, if this blog is teaching you anything, besides obscure Degrassi references, it’s that sometimes the lesser of two movies is actually equally as awesome. This equally awesome movie is The Monster Squad.

The Monster Squad was released in 1987, two years after The Goonies, and follows a similar narrative. The movie surrounds a group of young kids ready to embark on a crazy adventure (sound familiar). The difference between The Goonies and The Monster Squad is that rather than searching for some dead pirate’s buried treasure our gang of young misfits must battle the Universal movie monsters! That’s right. Dracula, the Werewolf, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon all inhabit a sleepy suburban town and seek to cause havok.

Our group of heroes are a band of neighbourhood kids who share a fanaticism for classic monster movies that borders on my Degrassi obsession. They have their own club, aptly dubbed the Monster Squad, and reside in a super-cool tree house that can only be made possible in movies. Note: I will pretty much watch and enjoy any movie that has a badass tree house. Our story develops when the Monster Squad come across the diary of legendary vampire hunter, Van Helsing. Instead of finding out Van’s secret crushes, they find out that there is some magical amulet that is crazy powerful. Unfortunately for our protagonists, Dracula is in hot pursuit of the exact same amulet. Dracula is so hot for this amulet that he’s amassed a monster army that includes all the famous movie monsters of the 1930s. Let the battle begin.

Despite a story revolving around kids and a wacky plot this is a fairly dark and subtly mature movie. In fact, there is a scene involving an old German man who ominously claims to have dealt with some monsters before… and he proceeds to show his Holocaust tattoo! Pretty deep. There is no way I had any idea what this meant as a kid. However, there’s swearing and sexual innuendo, and I totally got that (or pretended to), and that made it a pretty cool movie to watch as a kid.

It’s a little confusing to understand why The Monster Squad bombed so dismally at the box office compared to The Goonies. The Monster Squad was made for $12 million and The Goonies was made for $19 million, yet The Goonies made 15 times the total gross. The Monster Squad grossed less than $4 million! I guess it had to do with the fact that The Goonies was backed by Steven Spielberg and had a cast that included a young Sean Astin (Rudy), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), and the 80s superstar himself, Corey Feldman (Stand By Me). In fact, I would argue that you star pre-drugs Feldman in any 80s movie vehicle and you have yourself a hit.

The Monster Squad even employs the same recipe for 80s gang of kids (slightly cool/slightly geeky main character, the best friend, cool older guy, fat kid, the girl), but I guess they needed Feldman to pull it all together. By 1987 there wasn’t enough in the budget to supply Feldman with enough cocaine and meth to complete the shoot, so they settled for the B squad of 80s kids.

Despite The Monster Squad’s initial failure, it has developed a nice cult following. The jokes are funny, the monsters look really good, and it has the greatest one-liner is the history of all movies. When you see the movie you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Now I’m not saying this girl is a “10″ or anything, what I am saying is that Corey Feldman doesn’t deserve to consentually bang Roseanne Barr let alone this girl with a nice body.
So I am happy upon hearing the news that she is divorcing the little midget.

I think we all saw how much of a pussy Feldman was on ”The Surreal Life,” remember when he cried wike a wittle baby in the phone booth? Oh…you don’t?  That was just me??  Crap, I’m such a loser.

All this hype about Twilight/New Moon made me want to watch old vampire flicks. You know, where vampires kill people for blood. I’ve seen Twilight, by the way and IT. IS. HORRIBLE. That’s two hours of my life I will never get back. God, that movie is so awful, I want to take a bath whenever someone mentions it. UGH. So anyway, since I’ve been watching/re-watching a lot of vampire movies, might as well make a list of the ones I like. Note that some of these aren’t particularly exceptional (like, say, Bordello of Blood) but they’re fun and entertaining, nevertheless. In no particular order, just because.

Martin (1977)
directed by George A. Romero

Yes, Romero makes movies that are not about zombies. Whodathunk? Martin (John Amplas) came to Pittsburgh to live with his uncle who is convinced that he’s a vampire. Something about a family curse and Nosferatu. He tells Martin that he will save his soul and destroy him afterwards. There is nothing romantic about Romero’s vampire. He claims to be 84 years old but he is not affected by sunlight, or garlic, or crucifixes. Maybe he’s just human with a thirst for blood.

Trivia: A young Tom Savini plays boyfriend to Christina, Martin’s cousin. (Sex Machine is cheating on her!) Romero has a cameo role as a priest.

Cronos (1993)
directed by Guillermo del Toro

A 16th century alchemist invented a mechanical device that holds the key to eternal life. 400 years later, in 1937, a building collapsed and among the victims was the alchemist. His heart was mortally pierced. After a police investigation, all of his belongings were auctioned off. In the present day, an old antique store owner (Frederico Luppi) came across the strange device hidden in one of the statues. Meanwhile, a dying man is looking for the device and would kill for it if he has to. Ron Perlman stars as the sick man’s nephew and henchman.

Trivia: Luppi was in The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth while Perlman was in Blade II and Hellboy, all of which were helmed by del Toro.

Bordello of Blood (1996)
directed by Gilbert Adler

Katherine (Erika Eleniak) hires Rafe (Dennis Miller) to find his missing brother, Caleb (Corey Feldman). Rafe discovers a brothel filled with vampires (and tits). What happens next is one big bloody mess that you definitely want to see. After all, how can you not want to see something with a title like that? A whorehouse! With vampires! Naked, bloody chicks! ZOMG!

Trivia: This follows Demon Knight, another Tale from the Crypt. It’s not a direct sequel but the key from Demon Knight appears in the beginning of the movie.

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)
directed by Roman Polanski

The kooky Professor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran) and his assistant Alfred (Polanski) travel to Transylvania to hunt for vampires. At a local inn, they meet Sarah (Sharon Tate), daughter of the inn-keeper. Albert has fallen in love with her so when Count von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne) kidnapped her, they had to go after them. They track down the Count to his creepy castle just outside the village.

Trivia: This was Polanski’s first feature in color.

Fright Night (1985)
directed by Tom Holland

First of all, let me just say that Fright Night is THE BEST VAMPIRE MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. Well, maybe the best I’ve seen so far and I still have a lot to see. Like, a SHITLOAD. Second of all, there is no second of all. I just wanted to say “first of all”.

Horror fan Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) believes that his new neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. He enlists the help of Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), the local late-night host of Fright Night. Together, they fight Jerry and try to save Charley’s girlfriend Amy, before she becomes a creature of the night.

Check out those fangs!

Trivia: Chris Sarandon was the priest in Bordello of Blood. He was also the prince in Princess Bride. And Jack’s voice in The Nightmare Before Christmas. HE’S THE SHIZNIT.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Once again Paramount wants to cash in on the hit series with a third sequel to the sleeper hit Friday the 13th. Jason is back again after dying three times. The film cost $2.6 million to make and grossed over $33 million, so Jason really is unstoppable. Joseph Zito takes the directing chair from Steve Miner. Zito is responsible for such quality films as Invasion U.S.A. and Red Scorpion.

The film begins with authorities cleaning up the aftermath of Jason’s latest killing binge in part 3. They even find Jason himself. He of course wakes up at the morgue and kills some people there before returning home to Crystal Lake. A whole new crop of young people rent a house at the lake and swim naked immediately. The group also has a bunch of neighbors, including a young Cory Feldman. Jason kills a bunch of people and eventually Cory Feldman messes him up pretty good. We see Jason’s ugly face after he loses his mask, just like every other film. There is some indication at the end that Cory Feldman will be the killer but that never really happens.

Part 4 is actually not that bad and is a slight step up from part 3. There is a scene with one of the characters, Rob (a guy who wants revenge against Jason for someone he killed in part 2), who is being killed by Jason and actually shouts “Help. He’s killing me! He’s killing me!” I doubt it’s intentional but there was something relatively scary about that line and the desperation in his voice as he states the obvious. It’s one of the rare chilling moments in what amounts to be an incredibly gratuitous exploitation movie.

The beginning of the end for Jason, at least in this final chapter anyway.

The gore is always good in these movies but it was particularly good here and that is probably because Tom Savini returned. The nudity is also always good in these movies and within the context of this kind of film it is a welcome addition. This was of course not the final chapter. The series is a gradual decline in quality and the final chapter is the last of these films that is worth any praise as a horror film whatsoever.

My rating is 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I apologize for the fact this involves Corey Feldman!! But it looks cool in spite of him.

Netflix, Inc., announced it is collaborating with renowned horror filmmaker Roger Corman (“Little Shop of Horrors,” “Pit and the Pendulum”) on a series of Internet Webisodes scheduled to debut two days before Halloween. Anyone in America can instantly watch the Webisodes at www.netflix.com/splatter. In a plot twist, Mr. Corman, making his Internet video debut at age 83, is opening up the creative direction of the series by asking the public to vote on the fate of its characters.

Entitled “Splatter,” the Webisodes were conceived and produced by Mr. Corman, co-produced by Julie Corman (“Box Car Bertha,” “The Westing Game”), directed by horror auteur Joe Dante (“Gremlins,” “The Howling”) and star Corey Feldman (“Lost Boys,” “Stand By Me”) in the title role of rocker Johnny Splatter. The first episode of “Splatter” will launch on October 29, with the second installment scheduled for November 6 and the concluding episode slated for November 13 – yes, Friday the 13th.

While anyone in America can instantly watch “Splatter” online on a computer starting on October 29, Netflix members on an unlimited plan will be able to instantly watch “Splatter” on their TVs via a range of Netflix ready devices at the conclusion of the series. A perfect town with beautiful people is transformed into a masochistic wonderland when a virus is unearthed. Allen (Corey Feldman) comes into town to propose to his long time love to only discover she too is infected. His love for her does not stop him as he discovers a cure before the world is infected. Terror Inside is an infectious thriller like no other.
