         ” Mi hermano Oscar vive en el palacio de Cnossos, en lo profundo del Laberinto.

          Mi hermano ya es un laberinto en sí mismo. Para llegar hasta él hay que entrar por la llamada “logia de los guardianes” y allí todo el que quiera encontrarle debe aguardar durante cierto tiempo en la sala de espera. Se abre luego la puerta del “Corredor de la Procesión“. Óscar deja caer un vestíbulo que da a unos pozos de luz y consigue que ascienda lentamente la Sala del Trono. Normalmente, mi hermano observa bien al recién llegado desde el corredor central, oculto bajo los escalones que conducen al primer piso. El visitante se encuentra de repente en una cripta de columnas que da a la cámara del tesoro, sin saber a ciencia cierta hacia dónde dirigirse: si encaminarse hacia el Santuario o bajar al encuentro de la denominada “terraza subterránea“. Óscar se coloca entonces en un monumental palacete que hay en el ala Este. Cada paso que da quien acaba de llegar es imitado sistemáticamen­te por mi hermano, que lo destruye al primer contacto. Es así como el visitante se va alejando a cada momento de Óscar, a la vez que Óscar se aleja del visitante. El juego de las piernas y el ritmo exacto de las articulaciones se hace esencial. Es un “ballet” de sombras, una separación progresiva y matemática en la que Óscar llega a ser un maestro. Único ser humano que ha logrado el encuentro al revés, Óscar domina a quien quiere verle. El recién llegado no posee conocimiento para saber que conforme se acerca se aleja, y que será en el total alejamiento donde hallará su final. Nadie, por tanto, ha podido encontrarse con Óscar sino en la lejanía. Nadie que no sea alguien que él desee ha visto con claridad a mi hermano y mi hermano nunca ha visto a nadie. No se conoce, pues, su aspecto. Sólo se le intuye. Se dice de este hermano mío que tiene mil cabezas y que él es el Minotauro. Jamás se podrá comprobar, ya que el Minotauro es tan desconocido como mi hermano. Y sin embargo hay gentes que han alcanzado a vislumbrar su penumbra. Comentan de él que extiende un eco negro que cubre toda Creta y que llega hasta el mar.

          ¿Es hijo de mi madre, como yo, o es una isla? Indudablemente es una isla anclada sobre el tiempo. El tiempo griego se identifica con Óscar. De tal modo, que mientras el resto de los hombres viaja por los siglos, él permanece agazapado antes del siglo primero, en una noche de milenios. Por ello se ha hablado tanto de sus pies de arcilla, su cuerpo de negociante y su cabeza de marino. Con los pies alcanza su perfección en la cerámica, con el cuerpo compra y vende palacios, con la cabeza suele beber del mar. Es entonces cuando mi hermano se identifica con Creta y Creta misma es Óscar. Desde que se pisa la isla, los pies se hunden en el ser humano. Astutamente, él va dejando que se acerquen. Puede uno moverse sobre Creta ya que Creta parece dormida. Seguirá dormida mientras mi hermano permanezca inmóvil. Él puede vivir inmóvil, aguardando a quienes le visitan. Ha colocado casas y hombres y ruinas sobre su piel. Está Canea, está Festos, está Heraclión. Y cuando Creta se despereza, cuando este hermano mío sacude su sueño, un gran animal de tierra aparece en el Egeo meridional. Es Óscar que silenciosamente se agita en el océano. Sin el menor ruido, comienza a remover arena. Entonces las ciudades parecen tambalear­se. Vacila el monte Ida y pierde el equilibrio el monte Lassithi. Óscar va levantando su grupa en el aire y toda la isla se eleva sobre el mar. Lo que no ha podido hacer nunca –viajar en los espacios–, intenta mi hermano hacerlo ahora. Por eso dicen que a Creta se la ha visto andar por el mar Egeo y el mar Jónico. La única isla que no solamente puede nadar sino que puede andar, busca afanosamente su destino. Hay rumores de que mi hermano se acerca hasta Corfú o se vuelve hacia Rodas. Sabe que no puede llegar hasta Salónica porque el Egeo está lleno de piedras que son islas auténticas. Él es la isla humana, mitad animal‑mitad tierra, que se abre camino sobre el agua. Se oye un sordo movimiento en la noche cuando Grecia duerme. Creta cree que no le mira Grecia, pero Grecia posee ojos invisibles. Jamás deja escapar a un enemigo. Óscar no es enemigo ni amigo de Grecia: desea huir de su dominio. Creta ama la libertad. Redes de agua procuran apresarla. El agua es resplandor transparente: Óscar sabe que son Jónico y Egeo en el instante en que se entienden. Egeo y Jónico murmuran sobre Creta. Es el susurro que rodea las islas, ese viento marino que oyen los campesinos: los griegos conocen el lenguaje del mar.

          Entonces Óscar escucha a las aguas, pero las aguas se le escapan. Se dice que él anda mientras las aguas fluyen. Se esconden por debajo de su cuerpo, le bañan, le emborrachan. Ebrio de mar, mi hermano es atrapado. Cae de bruces, le empapa el océano. A veces se le encuentra perdido, la senda de los siglos le rodea. Quiere hablar con la leyenda y con la historia. Sabe, sin embargo, que no podrá escapar. Griega es la sal de la que ha bebido y griega es su tierra que se extiende. Es más animal que nunca, menos humano. Con torpeza, sin ningún cuidado, Óscar intenta recordar. Sueña con vasos, con marfil. Aparta ese líquido de sueños y se esfuerza por soñar con Asia y con Egipto. Viene a él implacablemente la cerámica, la arcilla: la arcilla le conduce al Laberinto. Cuando se despierta se revuelve en sí mismo. No puede desatarse de su propia condición. Está rodeado de frescos. Las pinturas murales aparecen y desaparecen, le hacen guiños. Óscar sigue siendo isla, pero Creta es solamente Cnossos. El palacio de Cnossos se extiende hasta tocar el mar. Dibujos y jarros irán mansamente a flotar en el agua. La cultura de Creta expande el océano. Es lo que segrega mi hermano, aquello que se le escapa. Hundido en lo más hondo de sus ruinas, el palacio medita. Piensa cómo expulsar aún más al visitante para acercarle alejándole. El Laberinto recorre ahora la isla igual que una serpiente. Siembra enroscada la equivocación. Ha dejado caer ese hilo invisible, el que anuda el cuerpo de mi hermano. La gran astucia es no ser hilo de Ariadna que le salve, sino el que nunca le dejará huir. Óscar se ha reducido a Cnossos y Cnossos al Laberinto. El Laberinto, a su vez, se ha extendido. Ya nadie sabrá dónde está cómo y quién está dónde. El lenguaje jeroglífico va por dentro del hilo. Ese hilo se extiende formando el Laberinto. El Laberinto deja que el palacio busque en Óscar a Cnossos y se encuentre en Creta. Retorna Creta a Cnossos, le abre Óscar y entra en el palacio. Mi hermano está perplejo.

          El palacio comienza a moverse mientras mi hermano permanece quieto. Avanza un toro de oro cortado por un hacha que mete la cabeza en un anillo. Cae el anillo en un vaso, estalla en un friso y los caballos del friso galopan hasta un casco de bronce que atraviesa una espada de pintura mural. Un león de alabastro devora la pintura mural, y comienzan a desperazarse las ruinas.

          Así, de pronto, piso yo lentamente la piel de mi hermano”.

Η κάθε βίλλα συνολικής επιφάνειας 80 τ.μ., αποτελείται από 3 επίπεδα. Η είσοδος οδηγεί στον πρώτο όροφο που βρίσκεται το καθιστικό με το τζάκι και η κουζίνα με την τραπεζαρία. Filomena Almarínez (1913-1938)

Although foreign-sounding first names such as Anne, Sam, and Angel have been the vogue these past few years, the practice of naming Filipinos after Spanish-named saints still pervades up to modern times. For instance, my real name José Mario was taken from two saints: St. Joseph, the foster-father of Our Lord and Savior, and his bride, the Blessed Mother of Christ Jesus.

In Biñán, La Laguna, we came across a curious case of an incorruptible “saint” who is not yet recognized by the Catholic authorities. Her name is Filomena Almarínez, obviously named after a canonized Greek princess who was martyred sometime in the 4th century: Saint Philomena.

To Catholics, Saint Philomena (English translation of the Spanish Stª Filomena) is also a curious case. Christians started venerating her in the early 19th century when her remains were discovered in the Catacombs of Priscilla (in Via Salaria, Rome, Italy). There is not much information known about her aside from a Latin inscription found at her tomb: Filumena which means “daughter of light”. She is also known to be the patron saint of children.

I first became acquainted with this saint more than a decade ago. One of my cousins, Amador II L. Alas, or Josh, was stricken with the deadly cancer Burkitt’s lymphoma. After several months of battling the fatal disease, Josh’s doctors here in the Philippines have given up hope on him. But not us, of course.

I can’t remember anymore if it was my grandmother or one of my aunties’ who distributed St. Philomena novena prayercards among family members. I got one and kept it inside my wallet, praying the novena from time to time for the quick recovery of my cousin. Eventually, he was brought to a famous medical facility in the US and there he was miraculously healed.

Doubting Thomases would be quick to retort: it’s science who healed your cousin, Pepe. Not totally true. The wise logic and argumentation of the Doctors of the Church have proven time and again that science is dead without faith (but that’s for another blogpost).

Today, as you look at my cousin’s photo below, who would’ve known that he was a victim of Burkitt’s lymphoma many years ago? (and who would’ve even known that he’d grow up to be as handsome as me?)

But after that cancer incident, I’ve completely forgotten about St. Philomena (I can’t even remember where my prayercard is anymore). Until last week when I read in Facebook that my comrades Arnaldo Arnáiz and Levi Soledad are talking about a possible Biñán “field work”. They’re talking about visiting some beata there. I sent them a message saying that I’ll join them although I don’t know exactly what they’re up to.

Initially, I thought that we’re going to visit only a relic or some preserved body part of a saint. I was surprised to hear from Arnaldo that we’re going to visit St. Philomena. Upon hearing of the familiar name, it started to register into my mind the events of long ago, about my cousin, his cancer, and the prayercard (I just couldn’t forget the picture of the young saint with the arrows). So I thought that one of her relics was in Biñán. I misunderstood Arnaldo: he was referring to a totally different person, another Philomena, an incorruptible who is yet to be recognized by the Catholic Church.

We went to Biñán on a rainy Wednesday afternoon (4 November 2009). We were on a rendezvous with Levi, a Biñán native, inside Pavilion Mall. On the way, Arnaldo explained to me what little information he had about this “unrecognized saint”.

Upon meeting with Levi (whose slick red car we used), we drove towards the place where Stª Filomena was interred: Biñán’s public cemetery, popularly known as the St. Filomena Cemetery (nicknamed after her).

Stª Filomena’s incorruptible remains are housed inside a well-maintained chapel named after her. We got to talk to a lady called Nanay Deneng who has been taking care of the chapel for years (later on, she told us that we were so lucky to have arrived at a very opportune time — the chapel is rarely open nowadays). From her we got to know a lot about this mysterious Filipina whose lifeless body refuses to rot…

Filomena was born on 6 July 1913 in Barrio San Antonio Biñán (then spelled as Viñáng) to poor farmers. Unlike many female saints, she wasn’t a nun nor was she a member of any religious organization. She was just an ordinary citizen. But stories today say that she was a very prayerful lady during her lifetime.

One day, on 13 August 1938, she suddenly died of unknown causes. She was only 25, very young. Stories say that she died of emotional stress and heartache because her parents were against her lover.

Nine years later, in 1947, her father followed her to the grave. And when the people dug her coffin so that her father’s remains could rejoin hers (a common practice a long time ago), they were shocked to discover that her mortal remains didn’t rot!

She was discovered to be incorruptible!

Too bad Stª Filomena’s incorruptible body is no longer available for public viewing. It used to be in the past. But a couple of years ago, it was buried in a tomb inside the chapel, and that tomb was what we saw when we went there. Sayang talagá. And Nanay Demeng doesn’t know the exact reason as to why it was decided to bury the “uncanonized saint” altogether. So the only thing we saw, aside from the chapel and the glass coffin which used to house her incorruptible body, were photos of her when she was still alive and during the time that her incorruptible body was still available for everyone to see. It was –to borrow from today’s youth– creepy! In books and on Cable TV, particularly a National Geographic documentary on incorruptible saints, I’ve encountered cases about the incorruptible beatos y beatas of the Catholic Church. But this is the first time that I saw a photograph of an incorruptible whose eyes didn’t decompose! And, surprisingly, the eyes of Stª Filomena in the said photograph are partly open! Everything seems to be intact: the cornea, the sclera, the iris, the pupil!

When a person dies, the eyes are supposed to be one of the first parts of a human body to decompose since it is composed mainly of aqueous components and proteins (collagen). But this is not the case with those of Stª Filomena!

I am not an authority to speak out as to why such a phenomena happens. Even that National Geographic episode on incorruptible saints wasn’t able to give a firm conclusion. But what struck me more is that why the Catholic Church still doesn’t recognize this “saint”. According to Nanay Demeng, –and Nanay Rosa who later joined us that afternoon– it could be the fact the Stª Filomena is now under the auspices of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, the schismatic group dating back to the revolution of 1896.

The members of this group are more popularly known as Aglipayans or Aglipayanos because its first bishop was Gregorio Aglípay. When the ilustrados (composed mostly of Freemasons) staged a revolt against Spain, they chose Fr. Aglípay to head the schismatic church. The leaders of the revolution still considered the Iglesia Filipina Independiente as Catholic. The only thing is that they refused to recognize the authority of the Vatican for the simple reason that the Holy See is connected with Spain and the much hated friars. The founding of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente is actually a part of the Filipinos’ rebellion against Madre España.

But just like what Levi whispered to me in the chapel, the Aglipayans are still Catholics. But darn, Spain is no longer here. So is there still any other valid reason why they refuse to reunite with the Vatican?

The curious case of Stª Filomena, the saint who is not yet a saint, should not be taken lightly. People have been talking about miracles attributed to her intercession. Not to mention her apparitions. To avoid a possible cult-like behavior from the ignorant, both the local Catholic authorities and leaders of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente should work hand in hand to once and for all come up with a conclusion as to whether or not Filomena Almarínez’s sainthood is valid or not.

The original Stª Filomena of Greece, by the way, is also known as the “Daughter of Light”. That’s why it freaked me out a little bit to see those eye-like lights from two small windows right above us, very open like the eyes of Stª Filomena de Biñán!

Other peculiarities: Both Filomenas (the one from Corfu, Greece and the one from Biñán, La Laguna) died at a very early age. And what’s more shocking is that both died almost at the same date: St. Philomena of Greece died on August 10; ours died on the 13th of that month!

Are these coincidences?

One place I have travelled to many times is Greece. The Greek Islands to be precise. The first time I went, was in 1987, the hottest summer in years, a massive heatwave with temperatures not dropping lower than 30 degrees even at night. Hundreds of people died across Greece and I was really ill with sunstroke and had blistered shoulders. But I remember that visit to Corfu, with the half sunk ships in Corfu Town harbour, and renting a boat and almost making it to Albania before being warned off back to Corfu. First encounter with snorkelling and fish <—-THIS—-> big. A few trips to Kefalos Harbour in Kos, a trip to Kefalonia and many trips to Skiathos Island, Skopelos, Alonisos, Tsougria and Arcos Island, and I have collected many images both on my camera and in my memory of the most beautiful back streets and old buildings I have ever seen.

Cea care a fost poreclită de presă “blonda lui Iri” are 29 de ani şi o viaţă de telenovelă, de care nu se simte deloc stanjenită. Se mişcă languros, ca o adevărată profesionistă, imblanzind, parcă, bara de striptease. “Cu ce vrei să încep?”, întreabă Mariana, în timp ce-şi scoate, uşor, sutienul, demonstrând că, la zece ani de când făcea senzaţie prin cluburile de noapte din Bucureşti, nu şi-a pierdut deloc îndemânarea.

A renunţat la liceu şi a plecat la Bucureşti

Mariana Roşca a plecat din Iaşi la 18 ani, înainte să apuce să termine liceul. Conştientă de farmecele ei, a preferat să ia viaţa în piept şi a aterizat într-un club de noapte din Bucureşti, unde a fost angajată ca stripteuză. “Mă descurcam foarte bine ca dansatoare şi eram şi frumoasă. Mă cam invidiau colegele şi, de fiecare dată când aveau ocazia, încercau să-mi facă rău. Dar am învăţat să le ignor, pentru că am observat că asta le durea cel mai tare”, ne-a spus Mariana, care mărturiseşte că experienţa acelor ani a însemnat o lecţie dură de viaţă, care, însă, i-a prins foarte bine mai târziu.

După câteva luni, a fost remarcată de un impresar, care i-a propus un contract bun la Viena, tot ca dansatoare. A stat un an în Austria, după care s-a întors în România şi l-a întâlnit pe cel care avea să o ajute să iasă din acea lume. “L-am cunoscut pe Sabbah şi ne-am îndrăgostit nebuneşte unul de celălalt. Ne-am logodit, după care mi-a propus să merg cu el în Liban, ţara lui de origine. Am acceptat pe loc”, povesteşte Mariana.

Ajunsă la Beirut, românca nu a stat degeaba. S-a înscris la un liceu de acolo şi şi-a finalizat studiile. Apoi a pus pe picioare, împreună cu Sabbah, o mică afacere cu apartamente, care avea să se transforme în cea mai tare agenţie imobiliară din Liban. În cei opt ani pe care i-a petrecut în ţara arabă, Mariana nu a uitat de România. Ea a revenit în nenumărate rânduri în ţara noastră, dar nu singură, ci împreună cu oameni de afaceri sau cu prieteni pasionaţi de vânătoare. “Am început ca translatoare pentru câţiva oameni de afaceri, însă, în scurtă vreme, m-am îndrăgostit de vânătoare. Am fost la vânătoare de mistreţi, la goană, cum se spune în limbajul vânătorilor, şi, de câteva ori, la vânătoare de cerbi. Acum însă, vânez doar din plăcere, cu amicii mei, nu mai fac pe translatoarea”, ne-a spus frumoasa blondă.

Sabbah cu Mariana

Azi, Mariana e o adevărată regină. Ea se poate lăuda că are la picioare un imperiu imobiliar în Liban, pe care l-a ridicat de la zero, împreună cu iubitul ei. Mai mult, ea are şanse foarte mari să înceapă şi în România o carieră în televiziune, pentru că, în ultima vreme, a primit multe oferte tentante.

A venit din Liban să se ia în piept cu Simona-Sensual, la Bucureşti
Mariana Roşca a dorit, acum un an, să arate cât este de frumoasă. Ea a participat la concursul “Ia-te în piept cu Simona-Sensual” şi a reuşit să ocupe un onorabil loc III, impresionând juriul cu bustul său care măsoară 100 de centimetri. A fost premiată cu o excursie în Corfu.
Agenţia imobiliară i-a adus zeci de milioane

Piaţa imobiliară e în plin avânt în Liban, iar agenţia Marianei şi a lui Sabbah a fost desemnată, mai mulţi ani la rând, cea mai bună din statul arab, aducându-le celor doi o adevărată avere. Românca locuieşte, în prezent, într-un luxos apartament de 1,5 milioane de euro şi mai are imobile şi terenuri a căror valoare ajunge la câteva zeci de milioane. O avere cel puţin comparabilă cu cea a lui Irinel Columbeanu.
Mai interesată de Moni decât de Iri

Mariana a ajuns celebră după ce Libertatea a publicat în exclusivitate povestea flirtului dintre ea şi Irinel Columbeanu. Interesant e că Mariana a mărturisit, recent, că mai degrabă se simte atrasă de Monica Columbeanu, decât de soţul acesteia.
