Its been a while since i played with my D90…so this is a shot for all you bokeh lovers.. =) Enjoy…

I know, I know, the title is a bit deceiving, and World Nutella Day has not yet arrived. Not until February everyone! Nutella is a relatively new concept to me, introduced to me only two years ago on my first trip to Italy. It is an amazingly versatile spread that can be put just about anywhere – eaten on nice warm crepe, making it oozy; inside a cornetto (croissant); or how I’ve Americanized it, smothered on an English muffin or waffle. But those are not the only ways you can eat Nutella. To describe all the many ways to eat Nutella, it would take an entire book.

Since I am currently not in Italy, it is a bit difficult to have a true Italian breakfast. Or is it? Thankfully I have been able to purchase my little jug of heaven, and have even come up with a way to always have the most perfect cappuccino. This summer while I was at the mercato (picture an open-air market), I bought one of these contraptions:

I would not have bought it there if it was at all possible to buy here in the States. At the supermercato (supermarket) the smallest pots cost more than 9 euros in the Urbino area. You can’t tell by the angle and by this photo, but this one is a rather large one that cost me just 10 euros at the mercato which is a steal. So what is it used for? Well, after experimenting many times with our espresso machine (in the States) and having unsatisfying schiuma (foam) results, it came time to buy one of these. The milk is heated up on the stove. Once heated, remove the pot from the stove, and place the top on it (not pictured here). The top is attached to a medal rod with a piece of mesh. Once placed on top, simply pump the rod up and down, creating that fluffy light foam the cappuccino is most famous for. Voila!

What does this have to do with Nutella? A cappuccino and Nutella go perfectly together. So I whip up a cappuccino, toast my English muffin or waffle, smother it with Nutella, and you have a perfect fix of an Italian breakfast!

Frun och jag var på café och naturligtvis siktade jag in mig på glassen. Frun var – regnet och blåsten till trots – inte förvånad över mitt kalla val då hon känner mig. Mig ovetandes skulle min beställning bli en ofrivillig premiärsmakning! Mjukglass har alltid varit en storfavorit och en god mjukglass klår för det mesta en god kulglass. Dock kan mjukglass ibland vara svårt att få tag på eftersom den kräver att säljaren har en dyr, stor och underhållskrävande maskin installerad. För ett par år sedan kom så ett alternativ från GB (?): Cornetto Soft. Detta är en glass som levereras frusen i portionsförpackningar. Säljaren trycker sedan ut glassen ur förpackningen med en speciell apparat och vips så kan man servera mjukglass enkelt! Jag har alltid varit misstänksam mot den här mjukglassen, den känns inte riktig och allt för enkel! Kan jag inte själv köpa vanlig glass och röra runt i den tills den är mjuk? Nog för att jag skulle kunna ha smakat men den har alltid varit allt för dyr med små portioner. Detta fram tills förra helgen..

Cornetto Soft Choklad

I caféet vi besökte sålde de glass med olika smaker. Ingen närmare specifikation fanns så jag beställde chokladsmak. Till min förvåning plockade de då fram en Cornetto Soft Choc & Chip Vanilla och pressade den i ett glas istället för en strut! Rätt smart faktiskt att caféanpassa glassen så. Processen gick snabbt och jag var glad att inte få ett av de nydiskade, varma glasen.

Jag trodde att Cornetto Soft bara var ett slags mjukglass i olika smaker. Men faktiskt innehåller den både strössel och sås. Så lite lyxigare än jag trodde är den. Tyvärr tycker jag att det var för mycket gojs dock och följden blev att glassen var rätt söt. Det hindrade så klart inte att den försvann snabbt innan den smälte och således får jag nog säga att glassen är helt ok. Vill man ha ett lite häftigare men ofta dyrare glassalternativ är den här helt ok. Men mjukglassälskaren ska inte vänta sig en krämig mjukglass. Betyget blir alltså en trea, sådär mittemellan.

Right then, after all my confusion last week it turns out it’s still Tuesday deadlines for Thursday Photoshops. This week our theme is Chelsea’s new Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. A strange cross looks wise between Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink (couldn’t work out how to make that into an idea), Chelsea will hope that he is the one to lead them back to the top of the pile.

You might remember this Cornetto ad from the 80s/90s which completed murdered an opera piece named O Sole Mio. I was going to change the words to “Just one scudetto, give it to me.” but then Carlo’s all about the Champions League. It’s Man Utd’s infinite injury time credit next week which should be good. In the mean time have some Fat Frank and ice cream – always a winning combination.

Today was a semi-studying/relaxed day. Shop craze much? Haha, maybe not. Okay, so my day started out with going out to Dawson for breakfast at 11am. Super late breakfast, I ate BBQ Chicken Chop. Weird thing to eat for breakfast, and the person serve me SLOW. (Hungry porky, is a charging porky okay? Hahaha!) Then played with Uncle Johnson’s Mac. SUPER FUN! After that went to first level to study at the Cafe. Mum went for massage and have a super hilarious yet quite insulting joke in the massage shop. Study, ate salmon pizza, study, drink Strawberry soda, study. (Getting fatter while studying. Gahahaha)There was a mini car accident at the roadside, a little small argument between the drivers. (Prettaye scary!) After that mum suggested to do manicure. LONG LONG LONG time never did it already. Like since stone age or something – Hahaha, just joking! Aquamarine manicure NICE NICE! But a little chip off, because of the small little mishap with the blow dryer in the shop. Hahaha.

After that went to Anchorpoint to watch mum do foot reflexology. Starred at the bookshop (the one that allow people to rent books) Really really wanna try borrowing books from there. After that ate at Koufu, Japanese steamboat! Mum keep on pursuing me to cut bangs, NEVER GONNA DO THAT! Hahaha. After that checked out some stuff and rushed to Tiong Bahru hoping to see the movie 9. Sis wanted to catch the movie 9 at 9 September 2009 9pm. What a weird thing to want for. (Also not getting lottery or something >.<) In the end, 9 is showing tomorrow. So went to McDonalds to watch her eat Fillet-O-Fish. (I’ve got my Cornetto McFlurry, seriously getting fatter by the minute)

Soon, went home after laughing crazily at random jokes and things. (I think Cornetto McFlurry got crack or something. – Hahaha, just joking alrights!) *yawns yawns* TIRED MUCH! Gonna slum at my bed soon. Watching 9 at 11:30pm tomorrow. (Thinking of that just makes me tired…)

Kris Kwapis, EMG's marketing and development coordinator

Roger Downey, contributing writer for Early Edition, recently spoke with Kris Kwapis about some of her performing experiences and her interest in early music.  Kris moved to Seattle in the summer of 2008 from New York and is becoming a familiar face at EMG events.

1. How does a nice girl like you get into a business like this?

I grew up in the tiny town of Ortonville, Michigan.  I loved music and couldn’t wait to join the band.  I originally wanted to play drums, but ended up playing the trumpet because my cousin had one that I could borrow at no cost.  I hoped to have a career as an orchestral trumpeter and chamber musician, but a wonderful course in period performance practice at the University of Michigan inspired an increased interest in period instruments.  That same year I heard live performances of Les Arts Florissants and Concerto Palatino and knew that playing baroque trumpet and cornetto was what I was compelled to do. Pretty soon I began performing exclusively on period instruments. 

2. I hear the cornett is the instrument from hell.  True?  

The cornett is beastly!  It’s a hybrid instrument, using a lip-buzzed mouthpiece like a brass instrument and finger holes like a recorder thus bringing certain specific challenges to the player – basically the most difficult aspects of both instrument families.  The combination of a tiny mouthpiece and the awkward hand position required to even hold the darn thing is daunting enough to send most wannabe cornetto players running toward another instrument that is less stress-inducing.  The sound can be so glorious though, so I’d like to think that the effort is worth it. Baroque trumpet (the valveless predecessor to the modern trumpet) is still my main instrument professionally, but I look forward to mastering the cornett.

3. In the 17^th century, the cornetto was the virtuoso solo instrument bar none. Why do you think it disappeared so completely for so long?

One theory is that the plague of 1631 wiped out so much of the population of Venice, where Europe’s best cornetto players were, that it became increasingly difficult to find cornetto players and teachers to keep it alive as a viable instrument capable of extreme virtuosity. Plus the violin was the hot new instrument (kind of like electric guitar in our age) so it could be that changing tastes helped violinists to overtake the virtuoso role that cornettists once held. Also, maybe people were just interested in hearing something new and different.  

3. Tell us about the early brass group you’ve founded in Seattle.

This summer, I began coaching the newest of EMG’s community collegium ensembles – a cornett and sackbut ensemble.  There are a few early brass players in the community who have been interested in playing together but there hasn’t been someone with early brass experience to make it happen.  So far we have two sackbut players and three cornetto players involved. Unlike the Loud Band, the EMG community ensemble devoted to Renaissance wind music, we’re focusing more on vocal music than instrumental music. One of the wonderful things about the old brass instruments is their ability to sound like a voice.  Cornetts and sackbuts were designed to compliment voices, so the listener can almost hear the words of the text when they play. One of the goals I have for this ensemble is collaborating with other EMG community ensembles – Sine Nomine, a vocal ensemble, and the New Baroque Orchestra.  Along with Giovanni Gabrieli, Heinrich Schütz was one of the most interesting composers to write for brass instruments.  It would be lovely to have a joint project of his Psalms of David or History of the Birth and Resurrection of Jesus Christ once the brass group gets more established.

Two descriptions of a rather non-descript looking instrument. If you are an early music aficionado you are familiar with the sound and would probably agree with Mersenne’s poetic take on things. The great John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins album “Tenor Madness” inspired the post’s title, but what about the music?

First thing to remember is that if you pondering which cornetto album to buy, get anything with Bruce Dickey and his ensemble Concerto Palatino. Dickey is the Eric Clapton of the cornetto and he appears on dozens of recordings of baroque music. His ensemble Concerto Palatino has made some stunning albums for a number of record labels and some of the best appear on the Accent label.

To get a feel for the sound of massed cornetti and trombones, start with:

There are other cornetto virtuosi and William Dongois is a name you’ll need to know. There’s a marvelous 3 CD set called L’Âge D’Or Du Cornet A Bouquin on the K617 label. It’s tough to find – I recommend Amazon’s French affiliate—but a real treasure. Dongois and an ensmble of cornetti, organ, harpsichord and soprano Julie Hassler explore music by Italian and German composers of the early baroque:

Jean Tubéry a French cornettist, is a student of Dickey, who leads Ensemble La Fenice and has a pretty extensive discography. I really like the many recordings he’s made with soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr for the Ricercar label. Slowly slowly more of my friends are moving away from Malta. The last to move away have been Steph and Lara, two now doctors, who were in my same class in sixth form and we also went to Egypt together. They bought arrived permanently in the UK last week…I have met them separately in the UK but not together as yet…but yesterday? SLEEP OVER DAY!

While I was with Lara  last Sunday she told me she has to come to London on Friday (yesterday). I suggested that she sleeps over so that she can get to see a bit of London. BUt why should it be just us two? Why doesn’t Steph come as well? Sure! I have a quite teeny room…but who cares?

So yesterday after a day at uni I went to meet up with Lara (who had already made plans to meet up with another friend, Matthew [MGS]). Us three met at Warren Street Station and off we went to first find something to eat. The choice fell on pizza at a place called Icco (which MGS recommended as it is quite cheap ). Off we went, and after a lot of deliberation, the choice fell on us sharing a Hawaiin and other pizza between us. MMM…pizza! From there we then went off to McDonalds for some ice-cream/coffee/whatever. I am always quite scared of taking a McFlurry as I tend to end up with brain freeze, but they had this chocolate cornetto McFlurry which the others encouraged me to take…Sure I said. Luckily I was with Lara (a slow eater), so I took my time to eat my McFlurry VEEEEEERY slowly…and luckily no brain freeze set in…woohooo!

After our time with MGS we then went off to pick up Steph at Russell Square Station and on home, where (as a punishment for them staying at my place ) we played Carcassone, before settling down to sleep (after a lot of giggling/talking/chatting/whatever).

A new day dawned…Saturday the 1st of August

What to do? Yesterday we planned that we do a day of shopping…what better way for 3 girls to spend a Saturday morning? (and YES I know…I’m not a typical girl, but every once in a while it doesn’t hurt). So off to Oxford Street we went where we roamed through the shops looking at what was on offer. I saw a skirt which I liked but didn’t get round to buying as have no appropriate shoes for wearing a skirt in winter (which this is ). Steph bought a dress and Lara a pair of shoes…and I bought nothing…but who cares?

From there it was then on to the supermarket and on home to cook…to cook what? LASAGNA! The plan had originally been to cook pizza, but then decided to change the plan as cooking lasagna is easier than pizza and faster . I didn’t have grated cheese (unfortunately what I had left over from last time was mouldy when I opened it today so into the rubbish it went), and only 9 pieces of lasagna…but it turned out very well if I say so myself! Lara had purchased the desert for today…carrot cake…mmmm!

After eating however it was time for them to leave . Lara had t be home by tomorrow morning, and Steph’s sister might be going over tomorrow for lunch, so she said it is better to be home. So goodbye it was.

As I was saying goodbye however Irina (one of the research assistants at uni) phoned…she had arrived! I had collected a shelving unit from a freecycler but had never got round to putting it together. Now that I am moving I don’t want to carry it around with me (definitely not!) so I asked her and Linda if they want it, and Irina said yes…WOHOOOO. Today her husband was visiting with the car, so they came to pick it up. After the (semi-)clean for the girls and the taking away of the shelving unit, all of a sudden my room looks much cleaner and spacious.

Well…all in all? I’m a very happy (if quite exhausted) girl .

Basta Basta! LA smetto che troppoo romanticismo fa male

Chose an easy one today when I decided since it was hot, hot, hot I’d buy a couple of boxes of ice creams for folk whose work was keeping them indoors when some of us were lucky enough to be out to play. (Yes this blog is play – I count any kind of  ‘work’  you love as play.)

Even so, there was a lesson in it about the limits of my kindness.

I decided the handing-out-ice-creams gesture would have more meaning if I gave the cartons of raspberry and choc nut cornettos to a group of people most of us don’t usually feel kindly towards: estate agents, tax officers, bouncers, taxi drivers, MPs and Prime Ministers.

I settled on traffic wardens because I find it hard to believe anyone would do a job whose sole purpose is to make others miserable, unless they have literally no alternative – having been rejected even by those who recruit staff  to serve fried chicken to drunks at 2am.

Sadly, it turns out traffic wardens are so fearful of getting customer feedback  they don’t let anyone know where they hide out.

Which left just one more group on my list: the staff at the local job centre, rebranded so many times I have absolutely NO idea what it’s called these days.

I couldn’t do it. Two weeks in, yet the milk of human kindness turned sour at the thought of delivering ice cream cornettos to a bunch whose members have been known to heap humiliation on those who are already down.

So, with my cornettos in danger of melting all over my good intentions,  I took the easy option and scooted down to Accident and Emergency at the local hospital.

“It’s such a hot day,  I thought you might  all enjoy these.” 

Behind the desk the two reception staff had long since learned how to keep a straight face in the middle of  everyday carnage and misery. Yet their expressions cracked into a sunny smile as they accepted my gift  – without batting an eyelid,or asking for anything by way of an explanation.

  Of course! Doctors and nurses are given gifts all the time. My sister, who works in a GP surgery, received five cards, chocolates and flowers from patients on Valentine’s day, for heaven’s sake.

 I-scream, you-scream

It was only as I turned to leave that I saw the heaving crowd in the waiting room, hot, bothered, bored, eyes following the red electronic letters moving across the information board ‘waiting time five hours’   in  horror. I swear that in 15 years that dammed board has never dipped below four hours. Is it niave to think they could just bring in a few extra staff for a couple of days and clear the backlog so we could all start again?

Or do they worry that if, when we arrive dragging our broken leg behind, we were to get seen straight away, more of us would stay for free NHS treatment rather than heading back home to carve our own splint and crutches from a few broken fence posts?

I wished I’d chosen differently who to give my ice creams to…  Guess where I’m heading tomorrow?

 Never mind my ice creams,  here’s an act of kindness with a cherry and whipped cream on top. Great fun!

Ogni mattina, faccio colazione in un ristorante wok thailandese. I cornetti a volte sanno di noodles e il cappuccino di bambu’, pero’ nel complesso li preferisco ad un bar italiano.

 Perche’?

 La cortesia prima di tutto; i baristi italiani ti fanno sentire sempre in colpa se gli chiedi un caffè’, manco gli avessi chiesto in affitto l’utero della moglie.

 E poi, l’efficienza: i thailandesi, appena hai pagato, gia’ hanno ascoltato la comanda e si mettono in opera; gl’italiani, invece, restano fermi guardandoti  con aria di sfida alla western (a volte, sento proprio Morricone in sottofondo e le balle di fieno che mi rotolano dietro) e mentre ti avvicini al bancone pensano: vediamo ’sto coglione che mi paga lo stipendio che vuole stamattina.

 Senza menzionare, la cura dei dettagli: il thailandese ti da il bicchiere d’acqua per accompagnare il caffè, mentre l’italiano non ci sputa dentro, solo perche’ se ne dimentica (a volte).

 Ed infine, il sorriso: elemento costante nell’orientale (a limite della paresi facciale), quasi dicotomico nel barista italiota. In fondo, perche’ sorriderti? Sei un coglione caffeinomane che gli scassa le palle ogni mattina…ma muori, no?!

 Miei cari baristi, il vostro e’ il lavoro più importante del capitalismo: pompate nel sistema l’energia necessaria a riscattarlo dalla morsa di Morfeo.

 E che cazzo, ogni tanto sorrideteci!

Vorrei spezzare una lancia a favore di un pasto bistrattato dagli italiani, altrimenti così premurosi in campo gastronomico:

la colazione

È scorretto generalizzare parlando di 60 milioni di persone, ma la colazione dell’italiano medio si presenta così:

Presa di fretta al bar, leggendo la bibbia rosa.

Per quanto riguarda l’italiana media abbiamo due situazioni: al nord si sparano un müsli:

Al centro-sud il caffellatte con i biscotti:

E lo chiamate pasto???

Ma insomma! In un paese dove  abbiamo il Biroldo della Garfagnana e la Robiola di Roccaverano, dobbiamo ridurci a bere un caffè in piedi, e lavorare tutto il giorno???

Mi dispiace dirlo, ma dobbiamo prendere esempio dai nostri coinquilini sul pianeta, e cominciare la giornata come si deve…

Io personalmente non ho una colazione fissa, essa varia da stagione a stagione, dall’ispirazione, e naturalmente dal tempo a disposizione.

Di questi tempi per esempio, oltre al caffè, mangio un piccolo pezzo di torta, un uovo alla coque, pane con burro al fleur de sel, piccole uova di lompo, insalata di aringhe con bietola rossa, una spremuta di arance moro, un croissant con formaggio e prosciutto e un po’ di frutta. Non essendo proprio stagione di frutta, la scelta è limitata a mele pere e banane, ma stanno per arrivare tempi migliori.

Se sono di vena dolce mi faccio anche fette di pane con burro (senza sale) e marmellata. Lamponi o arance.

Ma questo è solo un piccolo repertorio delle cose buone che si possono mangiare per entrare in sintonia con il mondo, appena usciti dal sonno…evito la lista per non tediarvi.

Ci sono anche alcune cose che evito…non sono un amante del Bacon per esempio, e non mi piacciono neanche i salsicciotti inglesi a colazione, ma da oltremanica ho imparato ad apprezzare i funghi, i pomodori al forno e i Hash Browns.

È inutile dire che adoro anche colazioni orientali, con zuppa,  nasi campur, una catervata di Rambutan, e un Durian per finire.

Non mettete freni alla vostra fantasia, e ricordate che una giornata iniziata bene è già a metà dell’opera…

Mettiamoci anche due coccole prima di alzarci, e siamo già a tre quarti…

Mina favorit-restauranger i Västerås:

Cornetto: Om jag ska träffa tjejerna eller Malin är detta ett säkert kort att hitta oss på. Underbara sallader som man själv komponerar. De väger helt klart upp för de bittra och tråkiga människorna som jobbar där.
Spicy Hot: Min förra restaurangchef Noi som är thailändare säger att det inte är thailändsk mat, men något liknande är det. Härlig atmosfär, supertrevlig personal och fri påfyllning av dricka. Här kan man sitta läääänge!
Kajens (hm, tror den heter så, är i alla fall en restaurang i hamnen): Bara varit här ett fåtal gånger men deras sallader är jättegoda! Och utsikten ska vi inte tala om, den är underbar!
Mongolian barbeque: Speciell inredning och mysig lokal. Det jag gillar är att de steker maten man själv plockar ihop på ett stekbord till en aldeles egen rätt. Ta vad du gillar och ät så mycket du vill (min familj är galen i bufféer)!

Tänk vilket “bloggigt” inlägg. Det är sådant här som Blondinbella och de andra “stora” gör. Men jag sa ju igår att jag inte bara skulle skriva om vad jag ska göra om dagarna längre.
Nu ska jag göra mig iordning och gå ner på stan för att träffa Anne Marthe. Det återstår att se vilken restaurang vi väljer idag (;

I felt out of place on holiday. I’d consider myself educated, of a good upbringing and an open-mind; yet I felt horribly outnumbered by those middle-class types striving to become upper-class elites whilst recently catching some rays in La Gomera. The sorts of people who will only shop at Marks’, have lunch together at some ridiculously priced restaurant (that spends more time worrying about its feng shui than its food), and spend every iota of every day with their noses turned upwards at normal people like me and… everyone but them (I’ve come to the conclusion that their noses must have been photosynthesising).

Snobbering snob snob.

It just so happens that on the 2nd day of the holiday, a group of young Rahs arrived at the resort lookin all smarmy and pompus, traits they must have inherited from the two adults that accompanied them. Watching them turned out to be spiffing good fun (whenever they were in view, I’d sing Rah to the popular doorbell tune, think it’s also used on clocks, maybe even Big Ben); they spent time revising (G.C.S.Es, probably in fox-hunting and being a ****), wading around in the pool, and ordering “just tap water” from the bar (pronouncing water like the name, the sign of ‘class’). It was in the pool when the ‘proper pronouncer of water’ (now known as Walter) came out with a pearl of wisdom: “Well, you tan more in the pool”.

I’m not going to argue with a private education, and I’m sure there’s some science behind his observation (sun-rays hitting you once and then again off the water’s surface?), but it was the delivery that grated me. Everyone else in the water at the time may have tanned more whilst being in the pool. I, a prime example of pasty-ness, would probably tan more whilst in the pool. But you, Walter, have ended up looking like a strawberry Cornetto with your streaky sunburn, so be more careful when using the second-person narrative in future.

Vêm os gelados… Já provaram o novo Cornetto? De todas as últimas invenções (chamemos-lhe assim) é a única que presta, melhor que qualquer um dos outros Cornettos ou gelados.. pena já custar 1.30€..
O sabor? bem o gelado tem três tipos de chocolate (branco, normal, preto) e uma bolacha também de chocolate e super crocante.. hummm delicioso

De deixar agua na boca

Não encontrei nenhuma imagem para vos deixar tambem agua na boca mas dirigam-se ao café mais próximo que o devem encontrar..

Por contraste os gelados para os putos estão cada vez piores,  mais pequenos, e mais caros…

E podem contar com calor mais uns dias…  Podem começar a tirar a t-shirts, as mini-saias (ou talvez não dependendo da pessoa em questão) os calções… Só espero que o tempo se aguente até as tão esperadas férias

Uma combinação cosmopolita, tipografias renascentista (séc. XV) e sem-serifa humanista (séc. XX) com símbolo sabor Art Déco (séc. XX), para uma cidade, também, cosmopolita – Roma.

Tipografia renascentista para um hotel próximo a Basílica de São Pedro – Vaticano.

Un anuncio para Cornetto presentando la campaña “No boring bits” en la que, como reclamo, se sortean reproductores MP3de Samsung  S2 Pebble. La verdad es que el anuncio en si mismo no hace que te apetezca un helado, y menos a las temperaturas que estamos ultimamente, pero tiene su gracia. Sobre todo si te toca uno de esos aparatitos.
