The $1 Billion Toyotathon

In what may very well be called one of the most daring moves made by a car manufacturer when it comes to its marketing strategy this year, the Japanese from Toyota seem to have decided on launching a dazzling $1 billion campaign for the fourth quarter of 2009.

Toyota is resorting to this daring move (given the current economy and the fact that the US market is now flooded with the 700,000 vehicles sold under CARS) in the hope that the fourth quarter will be just as in any other year: strong.

“We see the economy is starting to strengthen a bit,” Irv Miller, Toyota spokesman was quoted as saying by msnbc.com. “We’ve stopped playing defense. It’s time to go on the offense.“

The strengthening of the economy was witnessed by Toyota is August, when the company was able to post an amazing 32.4 percent increase in US sales, compared to the same month of 2008. The company sold a total of 225,088 vehicles, up 10.5 percent over year-ago levels on a daily selling rate basis.

Of course, the increase may be irrelevant, as August was CARS-month and Toyota was CARS’ best selling brand, with 19 percent of the total sales going to the Japanese manufacturer.

Even so, the new marketing campaign will be rolled out in November and will follow the company’s established Toyotathon marketing and sales run.

If you’re going to have a small Toyota meet, you might as well do it in the middle of a hurricane. The weather was intense, huge winds and damn cold but with Paul down from Calgary, we had to roll out.

Warren was out in his 86, White, stripped and now rolling on some new 14 x 7 diamonds. Jeff was doing his best impression of a hovercraft, floating just barely off the pavement.

His cressy is soon to be rocking a 5-spd, watch out for him on the track.

Chris looked daper in his Tercel…ahem…Starlet, considering the ridiculous care and attention to detail that went into his Rolla build, I expect big things from this car. Lastly, Brett showed up in an e70 that makes mine look like a Veyron pulled from the bottom of a marsh. Well, more so than usual.

Paul was playing practicality with the pickup truck he drove from Alberta, not exciting at all with the exception of a)Paul was in it b) Free clutch is free. Thanks Paul.

We finally ran for shelter in the nearest beer house, then the second nearest, then we made new plans and tried to head on our way. Of course no old school Toyota meet would be complete without car troubles.

Finally we all settled in to a nice warm beer? Enjoyed a nice cold restaurant? There was beer and food.

Jeff and Warren aren’t pictured since they were closest to me and I’m a lazy photgrapher.

Chris is intrigued by Paul’s theories and would like to subscribe to his newsletter.

Yesterday I wrote a eulogy for my beloved 1987 Toyota Corolla FX16. It’s still on my mind, but my sorrow and loss are giving way to other things.

• I don’t normally take the Lord’s name in vain, but WEAR YOUR GODDAMN SEAT BELTS. My car didn’t have airbags or crumple zones or anything, but I didn’t break my nose or any ribs because I had on my seat belt. Seriously, people. Why do we need “Click it or ticket” ad campaigns? Quit your bitching and buckle up.
• Going without a car requires sacrifice, but so far it’s easier than I thought it would be. I drive my wife to work, and pick her up after. On some days, she takes the car and I just stay home and work on the computer and the Internet. Our in-laws live close by, and my father-in-law is about to retire, so we can borrow vehicles when we need to. There’s public transportation, flex cars, and many other options.
• Driving a different car can really remind you of the flaws in the vehicle you normally drive. When I drove my wife’s car to Tacoma, it reminded me how loud my car had gotten.
• Our insurance rates will probably go up, but on the other hand we’ll only have one car on our insurance for awhile. I’m curious how that will work out.
• We never intended to take the Corolla if we relocated for work. We always intended to replace it or do without.
• In the words of Warren Zevon, written when he knew he was dying of cancer, “Life’ll kill ya.” Be grateful everyday for what you have, because things can change in a heartbeat.

So: Did I lose a car, or gain some insight, or both? I don’t know yet. Time will tell. Eventually.

In the first season of the TV show, Life, Charlie Crews drove a beautiful, expensive car. He had taken up Buddhism while in prison, which decries attachments to things. Charlie would occasionally catch himself enjoying his ride, and would repeat, “I’m not attached to this car.” Well, I was attached to mine.

In the winter of 1993, I’d been out of the Army for a year. I knew next to nothing about looking for work, managing my personal brand, or selling myself. All my advice came from family, who hadn’t looked for work in over 30 years. Times were tough. I couldn’t afford my Toyota pick-up, so with my family’s help, I traded it in for a used car. That car was a red 1987 Toyota Corolla FX-16 hatchback.

It was a very basic car. It had no air-conditioning. It had a manual transmission. The radio was AM/FM, without a tape player (CD players were just becoming common in cars when I bought it, and no one had heard of MP3s yet). One tail light kept filling with water when it rained and shorting out. There was a problem with the electrical system that made it think a door was ajar when none was, but the dome light would come on. Sometimes the dome light would come on randomly in the middle of the night and drain the battery. When the muffler died, it turned out the dealership had used whatever they had on hand and welded it to the frame. Eventually I discovered that more than half the electrical problems was caused by the battery being too small for the demand.

The next spring I started working at Wizards of the Coast, and my life got better. I met the woman I would marry. We got a dog, and he fell asleep in the backseat of that car on the way home from PAWS. I paid off that car. Friends and family bought cars, and I kept my Corolla. It ran just fine. Only in the last year or two did it start really falling apart. For about 20 years, it was cheap to own and operate, and it ran well. Every Toyota person I met got a gleam in their eyes when I told them about it. Apparently the FX-16 was very popular, once upon a time.

On Tuesday, I was coming home from picking up some part-time work. I was approaching an intersection. The cross street had stop signs, but we had no control. A block ahead was a controlled intersection. The road was wet from recent rain. There was a big pick-up truck several car-lengths ahead of me. Apparently, a few cars in front of the truck, there was a vehicle making a right turn. Everyone had to slow down or stop. The traffic light, a block ahead, was green. I didn’t notice the change in conditions. I tried to stop, but I couldn’t. I slid into the back of the truck.

I haven’t heard anything official yet, but a 22-year-old compact car with over 198,000 miles on it that I couldn’t drive away from the scene will probably be totaled out. The claims person on the telephone told me to take all my things out of the car, because I would probably never see it again. Then the tow truck took it away.

I was attached to that car. It carried a lot of memories. I miss it. Good-bye, car. Good-bye, old friend.

LINCOLNTON – Contractions woke up Gricel Mateo a little after 4 a.m. Thursday. Less than two hours later, the Lincolnton woman gave birth in the front seat of a 1996 Toyota Corolla. “I think I waited a little too long (to go to the hospital),” she said. Pregnant with her third child, Mateo was in no hurry to rush to the hospital when her contractions started just after midnight. The pain woke her a few hours later, but she still took her time. A little before 6 a.m., a sense of urgency arose. Mateo and her boyfriend, Antonio Paulino, climbed into the car and headed to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln. “My boyfriend was driving and right there in the parking lot by the stop sign, and I gave birth,” said Mateo. “I was pushing in the car, but I didn’t think she was going to come out. Then I heard crying,” While Mateo was giving birth, her boyfriend was trying to get help. “We stopped at the stop sign and he was calling 911 and I was already giving birth,” said Mateo. Lincolnton Police Officer Willie Vaughn showed up on the scene and gave the couple a police escort. Vaughn was shocked to find that the baby was born before getting to the hospital, Mateo said. “He didn’t know I gave birth until he put me in that wheelchair. He was surprised too,” she said. “I just gave birth to her in the car, put her under my coat and we went to the hospital” Mateo and her daughter, Jaydie Sonia Mateo Paulino, are doing fine and should go home Saturday, Mateo said. Jaydie Paulina weighed 5 pounds 12 ounces and was 201/2 inches long. Her due date was predicted for Monday, Nov. 16. This isn’t the first time Mateo has been surprised by her baby’s arrival. During a baby shower before the birth of her first child, Mateo’s water broke. Mateo’s son, 15, and daughter, 5, are anxiously waiting to meet their new sister. Children who are not patients are not allowed to come to the hospital because of restrictions to prevent spread of swine flu. “My daughter’s waiting for her sister so I’m dying to get home,” said Mateo.

I know this is old but it’s always going to be a classic. This is what made Hibino stand out. Unseen in D1, Jumping Drift! His aggressive driving style has translated into his attitude, by pretending to be bad-ass in front of camera. A true legend!

It’s amazing how the level of drifting has increased so much over the years, now-a-days you can pretty much
