BATAAN ECOTOUR, Balanga Mangrove Park,

Orion Magrove Tree Planting and St. Samat Shrine Tour

“This is our primary source of livelihood. If we do not take care of it, there might be a time when we will have nothing to eat,” says Mr. Laudico Perez, SUGPO President, the Samahang Ugnayan ng Pangisdaan ng Orion “Who else will take care of it except for us who benefit from the sea?

Two mangrove nurseries were established in Balut and Camachile, where propagules are nurtured prior to reforestation. Harvesting of propagules is conducted only during January to May because of limited propagules. Nonetheless, the organization encourages its members to continually collect propagules. Mangrove species nurtured include bakauan lalake (Rhizophora Apiculata), bakauan babae (Rhizophora mucronata), bungalon (Avicennia marina) and pagatpat (Sonneratia alba). Nipa seeds are also being propagated, and if successful will be planted along the rivers. The organization will be strengthening its mangrove reforestation and fishery surveillance operations in the coming months through capacity building for its members. One major activity is also to develop second-tier of leaders to ensure the continuity of the organization. An information and public awareness campaign will also be undertaken to increase the mass-based support for coastal and marine management in the Municipality.

Better late than never, as they say!

On Saturday June 28th, the Waterfront Center hosted the 2012 Bay Day Regatta. The sailors were greeted by a solid easterly breeze, clouds, and a few sprinkles as the sun tried to break through. All the sailors had great starts and competitive races around the entire course. After a number of fleet races around a triangle course, the teams decided to spice it up with some 2-on-2 team racing. The team racing portion got everyone’s heart rate up with an increase in maneuvers and tight interactions all the way to the finish line.

The sailors and instructors had a great time on the water, and are looking forward to next year’s event. If your company or organization is looking to run a corporate event, check out the various packages that we offer (http://www.thewaterfrontcenter.org/corporate.cfm) or give us a call (516) 922-SAIL

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. Steve Jobs Hey, Woot!

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. Steve Jobs

Hey,

Woot! An awesome day, an awesome lunch. The thing I hated most at my job turned out to be the best ever corporate experience. I am sure more of them are to follow. But this was an epic lunch at a 3 or 4 star hotel. I reached office on usual 10.30ish time. Everyone was late today. Don’t know why. Started watching video tutorials straight away.

Cs was looking stunning today. Straightening the hair worked like a charm to enhance her beauty. Here’s the conversation that followed. She asked me if she looks nice. I looked at her and said yes you do look nice today. She said then why don’t you directly tell me. I know you aren’t actually hitting on me. lol. I was dumbstruck. First a girl asks me to tell how beautiful she looks and then this. Oh, such is life. Then the moment came when we got a call to leave for lunch. oh boy, this was my first corporate outing and I was so excited.

All the new fellas and girls were driven to a nearby hotel. The ceo and director both are so nice and down to earth personalities. The lunch continued alongside a healthy chat. I was trying not to behave foolishly. Ceo was sitting right in front of me, so he was able to look directly to me. I was shocked to know that even he attended my college for a short span of time and then left for a bigger institute outside Mumbai. But he knows the college locality very well. The college spirit worked anyhow. lol. I had my stomach full with delicious food. But when it came to ice-cream and dessert, I lost all my control and was grabbing a piece from everyone’s plate. Lol. There was also a moment that I knew I would face somewhere in my life. Most of the guys ordered beer. Ceo was insisting me to take one. But I said I was underage. He replied with is that so? Is that the real reason? I somehow avoided. Phew! Call me foolish but I have taken a vow not to drink, smoke or do drugs in my entire life.

So, the euro quarters start from tonight. Czech vs. Portugal. No it was more like cech vs c-ronaldo. Both players were awesome. I feel sad for cech. He was the only player from their side who showed some seriousness. Match was more like barca vs Chelsea. But Czech doesn’t have drogba. The Czech forward tried to counter few times. He was fast but couldn’t finish well. C Ronaldo was all over the field. Running through channels, receiving crosses, free kicks, everywhere. But the result was expected. Portugal was supposed to win and they did. Thanks to c. ron. And thanks cech for an awesome display of goal keeping.

–rd

Aside from the extremely hot weather in the Philippines that makes you feel like being fried in a sordidly hot pan, how are you enjoying the summer? I am actually glad that despite the heat, I got a chance to go out with the people at work in one of the leading executive search firms in the Philippines.

(Although it was actually my first time to have an out-of-town trip without the boys.)

Panoramic view of Tagaytay captured in a cable car ride. Breathtaking sight of Taal Lakes and the volcanoes (Taal and the mini ones). Astounding scenery of a golf course patterned by the natural contours of a mountain ridge. Glimpse of luxurious homes and villas. Challenging games under the morning bright sun. Up-close encounter with the Zoo animals. Bountiful lunch at China Palace. Great escape at the Pool. Exciting horse-back ride. Relaxing bath at the Jacuzzi. Bonding time with colleagues who are also real friends. So much fun-filled activities spent in one day! And such a fine weekend feasted by all of us at Tagaytay Highlands.

VIGAN – is the second greatest architectural legacy of the Spaniards. It is especially impressive in the early morning, when the diffused light transforms the old town with its colonial houses and calesas into a scene reminiscent of the 17th century. Visit Vigan, Ayala Museum, Crisologo Museum in original Vigan ancestral house, Archbishop’s Palace, Pagburnayan, St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Plaza Burgos, Plaza Salcedo

LAOAG – is the capital of Ilocos Norte. Visit Paoay Church – built in coral blocks & stucco-lasted bricks.

TAAL Lake Cruise and Island Volcano Tour

http://mothernatureasia.multiply.com/photos/album/17

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=121909981175324

Taal Volcano is a highly active volcano at the heart of a larger protected area established in 1996. The Taal Volcano Protected Landscape is composed of over 65,000 hectares in 13 towns and 3 cities, including Lipa City, Tanauan City and Tagaytay.

The entire area is a land of mystery and shrouded in myths. Most of the tourism is concentrated on Tagaytay Ridge and the shoreline of Talisay town. There are, however, other entry points to the crater as well as other attractions that a visitor would find interesting.

Pusod offers a glimpse of the ancient past of the region, debunking myths told about this mysterious caldera, exploring the archeological and biological mysteries from the viewpoint of scientists themselves all from the gentler side of the lake where the Tagalog culture is still most evident.

Pusod is primarily an environmental education NGO. No other tour can offer the wealth of information on the lake basin that Pusod can, as we were instrumental in all the 16 consultations undertaken for the management plan of the lake basin. Our tours also ensure as little economic leakage as possible, ensuring that local businesses are patronized and accredited guides regale you with the lake’s legends and the culture in the heartland of the Batangueños. Experts on Taal: a biologist, a geophysicist and an archeologist/journalist will also be guiding you by audio (on an MP3 we will loan you).

ITINERARY

6:30/7: departure for an 8 am arrival in Taal Lake (site of future Taal Lake Conservation Center) short video presentation, don lifevest & get on the boat,

Crater Magic – view Vulcan Point – an island within a lake within an island within a lake within an island. Meditation and quiet time or chatting with island residents on the history of eruptions. Cold lemon grass tea, suman and fruits in season.

10:00 am Start riding down the volcano (optional swim in shallow portion in the middle of the lake)

11:30 Back at TLCC, Enjoy a sumptuous lunch of native and Batangas fusion cuisine, fresh buko on the shell.

It is bordered on the north by the provinces of Isabela and Qurino, on the west by Nueva Ecija and Nueva Viscaya, on the south by Bulacan and Quezon, and on the east by the Pacific Ocean.
Marine Turtles are transboundary creatures, they travel great distances to feed and grow. But because as hatchlings the imprint the magnetic fiel of area they always go back to where they were hatched after 25 to 30 years to copulate and lay their eggs.

How ever communities especially in underdeveloped countries, uninformed of their functions in the environment have hunted them down in the sea or slaughtered them while they lay their eggs in the beach for their shell and skin. While their eggs and meat are collected as food.

NACCI now promotes and support the Pawikan Conservation Center, a community based project of reformed poachers in the protection of the turtles.

Familiarize yourself with jungle survival techniques from US Navy-trained Aeta Training Officers. And a vast stretch of marvelous sea waiting for the beach bummers

The Banaue Rice Terraces are 2000-year old terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the indigenous people. The Rice Terraces are commonly referred to by Filipinos as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand. The terraces are located approximately 1500 meters (5000 ft) above sea level and cover 10,360 square kilometers (about 4000 square miles) of mountainside. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. It is said that if the steps are put end to end it would encircle half the globe.

Originally planted to sugarcane, the crop was converted to coconut by their son Don Arsenio Escudero in the early 1900s. A pioneering agro-industrialist, he built the country’s first working hydroelectric plant to supply his dessicated coconut factory and Villa Escudero, where he and his wife Dona Rosario Adap built in 1929.

My first blog Sagada after 16 years of coming up here regularly twice or 3 times a year and sometimes more

16 year ago Dave suggested that I should visit Sagada. December 26 to 31, 1996, I did with Patrick, Menchie, Melody, Leah, Tito Bambi and Sarreal Brothers, kuya Mon, Millie, Gerald, Tito Danny, Raul, Joey, Mike, etc.

We did Batad of Ifugao Province first, then went to Sagada the following day. We chartered 1 whole jeep, we cannot all fit inside with our backpacks and that is the start of our “top load experience as a traveller”. 16 years ago the road from Ifugao was not cemented and rough, 16 years ago Mother Mary was not at the entrance of the Mt. Province. 16 year ago we were able to see tattooed ladies walking comfortably in Bontoc. 16 years ago the Sagada Tourism Center is already very organized. 16 years ago St. Joseph looks like an orphanage and foreigners can comfortably make out at St. Jo cafe. Those are the days that we, tourist forgot that we should respect the local community and their culture. Now we do.

We arrived there with out accommodation reservation at the peak of Christmas Holiday. Most of the Inns in Sagada is already fully booked and home stays cannot accommodate our big group. Sagada Tourism Center told us to try St. Theodore Hospital. The kind people of the hospital accommodated us at their kitchen as our sanctuary for the night for P 50 with mattresses only. Adventurous as we are, we set up our tents, before we head of to do the caving. I secured the guides for the caves, walk to the site from the hospital, and the cave was a blast of experience. It is a super must do. We walked back to the hospital, that made us bit warm. Showered in ice cold water before dinner. 16 years ago I met Manang Joan of St., Joseph where she serve us with very delicious chicken curry at the 2nd floor of the restaurant. 16 years ago, I did my first Kaniaw Dance. There is a 9pm curfew, so our group was escorted to go back to the hospital by a marshal on a horse.

At the kitchen hospital and we did a SLE on environment education and artificial bonfire (with real fire) at the middle of out mattress all put together beside each other. We offered prayers and hopes and dream to the bonfire.

Bed time, thou we have our own mattress each, some chose to stay in the tent. The temperature started to drop as the night went, it was really so super cold, I started shaking, it is the coldest I ever experience in my life, wasn’t able to sleep. Learned the following morning that it is the new record lowest temperature ever experience in the community.

We packed our bags, got up Lizardo bus, passed by rough road going to Baguio. 16 years ago, I remember Patrick had a rash somewhere, 16 years ago I remember Melody and Menchie are stalking one of the boys, and quietly told me that he is cute. That is the only time I noticed, he is cute. 16 years ago I can carry the Sarreal brothers with one hand. (now they are taller than me, active also in Light of Jesus Family PICC, I am sooooo proud of you guys).

For 16 years of regularly visiting the community and bringing guest, I learn to respect and love the people and place. I super love love love the community of Sagada, Mt. Province. Manang Julia, Tam-ay, Archie, Belen, Marciano of St. Joseph Inn. Manang Arlene and Abbie of Alapos Inn. Manang Joan, Jocie, Raffy, Mildred and angels of St. Jo Cafe. Manong Seril and Anwin my ever reliable jeep provider. Manong June, Conrad, and Lawrence my Aircon Van handler. Manong Dave and Janice and my Master Chef Marvin of Log Cabin. Tita Mary of Residential Inn, Manang Fely, Bang and Wanda of Rock Inn. SEGA Guides. Listening to them about the arrogance and ignorance of tour agencies and travellers, made me a better tour organizer. How I wish travel agencies and travellers, learn how to respect and give values to the culture of communities that operates tour destination all over the Philippines

For 16 years of regularly visiting and bringing guest to Sagada, service have improved, from jeep from Banawe to Sagada, now Aircon Van and Bus can be mobilize according to the preference of the guests. Before the guest don’t have any option regarding the itinerary, now they can choose what to do and where to go according to their budget and physical capacity. Most of the time, the itinerary is Bumod-ok Falls and Caving, but I learn only physically fit people can do that. Before is a fullboard meals, now they can choose what to eat and where to eat according to their budget and dietary constraints.

For 16 years of regularly visiting and bringing guest to Sagada, with happy shepherds, friendship with Patrick, Rose, Nolan, John, Janice, Eric and Heidi grow to brothers and sisters to bestfriends forever. Now most of them are Board of Directors of Nature Awareness and Conservation Club, Inc.

For 16 years of regularly visiting and bringing guest to Sagada, everybody keeps asking me why I keep on coming back. Aside from the wonderful community, I always learn from my exciting and dynamic guests. From happily married guest to happy singles. Happy Family to solo travellers. All always have special blessing to be discovered during the journey. And everybody make everyone a better person.

16 years after regularly coming to Sagada, I did my first blog. December 26 to 30, 2010. I am again excited as usual to meet all the new guest. The Happy Trajano Family, Hernandez Family and Resurreccion Family, and all the happy blessed singles. The parents showed a great example of raising kids well. The kids assured their parents that they can be trusted to do adventures. The singles showed example of congeniality to everybody. And again I am also very excited to see my second family, Sagada community. My beloved Manangs, Manongs and Adings. There so many great blessing, love, healing and miracles, unconsciously and naturally shared during the flow of the trip that I can make a noble if I write is all.

I want to greatly thank the Sagada Community for being part of my life, blessed and inspired me so much to be very successful person I am now. Same with all the friends who blessed, loved, trusted, and journeyed with me in my first Sagada, thank you very much for all the recommendation, I owe you big time, for my very inspiring lifestyle, this is not work or job. This is a gift from God, that should be cared, enriched and shared to the fullest.

Reflected and wrote this blog at Baler, where the whole family are happiness, 28 hours trip from Mt. Province to Aurora Province. December 31, 2011 Friday.

The people are different – a brave and skillful race of hardy, inscrutable survivors. The houses is different – stone walls, whitened with lime, and roofed in thatch of grass.

Mines View Park, Botanical Garden, Mansion House, Wright Park, Good Shepherd Convent Philippine Military Academy, Camp John Hay, Bell Church, St. Luis Univ. Silver Shop, Baguio Cathedral Lourdes Grotto, Burnham Park, Baguio City Market, Balatok Mines, Tam-awan Village, Mary Knoll Eco Park, and Balatok Mines. It is so easy to commute around Baguio’s main destination, except in Camp John Hay.
