Il titolo corretto sarebbe, Tim Burton and the lurid beauty of monsters,  una mostra favolosa per chi come me adora il lavoro di questo incredibile artista. Già perchè definirlo registra è riduttivo, lui realizza i suoi sogni, i suoi incubi le sue fantasie. Non c’è un suo film che non mi sia piaciuto, anche in quello più zoppicante si riesce a trovare qualcosa di unico, per stile di film, per l’uso di tecniche nuove, per la poesia per la demenza con cui è fatto. Insomma per me Tim Burton è un genio. Io adoro alla follia una tecnica che lui apprezza ed usa da sempre, il passo 1, l’animazione frame by frame con i puppet, chiunque di trovi a New York non può non vedere questa mostra, rimarrà al MoMA fino al 26 aprile 2010, non mancatela. Ci sono i suoi schizzi, i suoi dipinti, le sue sculture i suoi mostri, e un sacco di oggetti di scena, i pupazzi di Nightmare before Christmas o della Sposa Cadavere, di Willy Wonka e  di Mars Attacks, i costumi di scena di Batman (la sua versione la più veritiera in assoluto) di Ewdard Scissorhands (ma quant’era piccino Johnny Deep…), i rasoi di Sweeney Todd…

Mi perdonerà il mio signor NO (marchino perdonami se ti ho nominato) personale, per quello che sto per dire, ma io non immaginavo assolutamente che in Mars Attacks (trash fin che volete ma mi è piaciuto un sacco!) i marziani furono creati come pupazzi, passo 1, pensavo che fossero stati creati in computer grafica… vedere il pupazzo originale com’era dettagliato beh è da panico, vi dico solo che i pezzetini di pelli in stile barbetta erano tutti animati… tutti mossi singolarmente. Ok mi fermo perchè sono troppo entusiasta e non voglio rovinare la mostra a chiuque la vada a vedere.

Il MoMa lascia sempre di stucco, come altri in musei a NY è un’esperienza unica, vedi mostre, novità, puoi leggere tranquillamente un libro o i loro libri, ti mangia qualcosa in uno dei due cafè, o meglio al cafè o al ristorante. Proprio come nella patria delle bellezze artistiche… dove i musei sono aperti sempre, dove trovate personale giovane e gentile, dove potete riposarvi e godervi un buon pranzo, dove potete rilassarvi godendovi una mostra… mmm come dite? sogno… avete ragione sogno… sogno che un giorno in italia qualcuno che conti dica:

“sono andato negli USA, li hanno varie cose che non funzionano ma porca miseria ne hanno altre che vanno benissimo, ed io VOGLIO che in italia ci siano queste cose…”

ci vuole poco, e sopratutto non ci vuole un altra guerra da tabula rasa per far diventare realtà questi miei sogni. Ci vuole la gente giusta al posto giusto, e non vecchi da pannolone, persone la cui gioventùè stata negli anni 40…
AH dimenticavo, tutto questo per $16 o se siete studenti $12, se poi volete diventare menbers, beh con $60 chiuque straniero può visitare il MoMa sempre senza pagare più nessun biglietto, e con sconti allo store interno.

Sono antipatico perchè critico sempre l’italia? chi se posso fare se sono nato nella nazione sbagliata? io sono ipercritico con me stesso figuriamoci con l’italia, un paese che non vuole crescere, un paese in cui ci sentiamo dire che dobbiamo rinunciare alla banda larga, che dobbiamo avere la censura cinese ad internet, un paese in cui lo sport nazionale è dire “NON è colpa mia, è colpa del mio predecessore“… Ammesso e non concesso che alle volte sia la verità, porca miseria mettiamoci la merda alle spalle e cambiamo le cose no? anche 1 alla volta ma facciamolo…

Exhibit Entrance

True to form, the entrance to the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA)  Tim Burton exhibition is formed from the gaping maw of a malformed clown.

As you pass through the jaws, thickly banded black-and-white stripes covering the walls of the tunnel ahead lure patrons deeper in. Six short animated episodes of a series entitled “The World of Stainboy” played on screens recessed into the walls. These short animations created with Macromedia Flash, are slightly uncharacteristic of Burton’s artistic style as far as tone and appearance and lack any real coherent plot. Stainboy appears as if it were an experiment in Flash that should have remained strictly on Burton’s desktop.

But as you reach the end of the tunnel, Burton does not disappoint. An eerie room filled with peculiarities greets viewers accompanied by the musical stylings of Danny Elfman. The room is dark, utilizing black lights to illuminate all the artwork reminiscent of “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” A figurine of Oogie Boogie made up of foam latex, aluminum and steel stands behind a glass case. Lining the walls are acrylic paintings on black velvet with highlighted fluorescent paint by the black light.

"Carousel"

“Carousel,” made up of epoxy, polyester resin, a plasma ball, muslin, fiberglass, foam and fluorescent paint in a large 3-D piece with varied Burtonesque elements, is the focal point of the first chamber. The multi-tiered carousel located on the bottom half incorporates the use of bizarre, unrealistic and nightmarish creatures, that spun slowly around, showcasing their strangeness to the occupants of the room.

The last room ticket holders enter is a spacious, well lit room where Burton’s work is displayed by time period, from the 70s to the present. Viewers can see the progression of his thought process as notes and initial etchings of his ideas evolve into detailed drawings and paintings.

One of his works, “The Giant Zlig,” was an early attempt at a children’s book whose pages were showcased beside each other in sequence. Burton sent this, along with a handwritten letter in cursive, to Disney in 1976 and got a rejection letter from the editor at the time, the late T. Jeanette Steiner. “Zlig” shows the transformation that Burton’s work has gone through from his first attempt as an artist to the present.

One part of the exhibit featured “Vincent,” a poem written by Burton transformed into a short black and white claymation film. “Vincent” is about a seven-year-old boy named Vincent Malloy who wants to be just like Vincent Price; it shares elements similar to that of Poe’s “The Raven.” Surrounding the video installation is a sequence of sketches and inked drawings, handwritten notes to more detailed and completed inkings relating to “Vincent.”

The “Edward Scissorhands” display was one of the most well-done areas of the room. Not only did it feature Burton’s illustrations of Edward’s complex hands and his transformations throughout the film, but the actual evolution of Edward’s appearance from his initial sketches. There was also a yellow steno book with Burton’s signature cursive which reads into the beginnings of the movie where Kim, played by Winona Ryder, begins to explain the origin of snow to her granddaughter.

Burton’s work also includes his more recent works such as “Corpse Bride,“ “Sweeney Todd” and “Alice in Wonderland.” The actual razors and case used in “Sweeney Todd” rested behind a glass case.

Burton’s art exceeds your wildest imaginations as each section details his ideas from conception to completion, visually. Burton uses color to turn what should be the everyday norm, into something strange and occasionally unsettling. He combines this with distorted perspectives, vivid patterns and crooked, uncomfortable lines to create his trademark work. This exhibit allows fans of Burton’s work to gain a rare glimpse into the mind of the artist.

The Tim Burton exhibition runs from Nov. 22-April 26, and gallery occupancy is limited. In order to avoid overcrowding, the MoMA suggests purchasing timed-entry tickets before visiting.

Necrophilia we know – but pseudo-necrophilia? Where’s Sigmund Freud when you need to be laid across a chaise longue and have such complicated matters of the heart and mind explained to you.

He — Sigmund — might be able to get to the bottom of the curious tale regarding Le Van, the 55-year old farmer, who hails from Ha Nam town in Thang Binh district of Quang Nam province.

You see old Van has apparently been sleeping on or with his wife’s remains for nigh on five years now. Yup, the header Corpse Bride suddenly seems rather inspired, non?

This poor widower lives at home with his three younger children and next door to his two eldest children and their families. Word eventually got out about the Corpse Bride and left town spreading from one bia hoi or tea stall to the next across the land until a reporter from VietNamNet tracked him down and now Le Van is a wee sensation (apparently he gets out of town visitors).

He told the reporter that although her body was dead her “soul is still alive.” Fair enough. But disturbingly, the man’s youngest son also shares the bed with the statue, though the 12-year old seems unconcerned.

“My father and I hold my mother while we sleep every night,” he told the reporter. “My mother didn’t die. She was reincarnated!”

Reincarnated as her own bones in a statue?

It could, perhaps, have been worse. Le Van had slept on top of his wife’s tomb every night for nearly 20 months. Then — perhaps on a really cold rainy night, but, hey, I’m speculating here — he decided to dig a tunnel in the ground to sleep next to her. His children drew the line so instead he dug up the coffin and brought his wife’s remains home.

End of story? Never. His older children were old enough to be highly concerned and decided to alert the local authorities. Officials and police officers came to his house and insisted that Van re-bury the coffin. But four months later, Van disinterred her tomb, removed the bones and placed them inside a statue he made in the image of his  — [cue creepy music] – wife. He even dressed the statue in her clothes and apparently placed it on his bed, proudly telling the reporter how he hugged his wife every night before sleeping.

What would the neighbours think? Well, yes, needless to say his odd behaviour — or stories of his odd behaviour — have ostracized him somewhat from the community. His neighbours certainly aren’t popping over for tea and asking, “How’s Mrs. L doing? She’s looking a bit stiff there.”

In fact, apparently some of them are plain terrified of him. Though I think the community needs to play some cunning reverse psychology, much like in one of my favourite films of the last 18 months or so, Lars and The Real Girl, in which Ryan Gosling plays a lonely, plastic-girl-philia in the arse end of Canada, who really believes his plastic girlfriend is real. The community at first is aghast and agog and it all looks bleak for Lars — read: destined for a padded cell in a funny farm. But eventually everyone rallies together and embraces Lars’ delusional feelings for this doll-woman, who’s called Bianca. People invite her out to lunch and offer her part-time work and yadda-yadda-yadda [plot spoiler ahoy] eventually Lars gets pissed off with her and dumps her and gets with a real woman. Moral of the story: He’s probably still mad, but at least he got conventional.  Okay, maybe that’s not the point of the story. Perhaps, it’s about community spirit and perhaps that’s what Le Van needs [eat that Sigmund].

The reporter who visited Van claimed he got the sense that the perpetually grieving widower was simply trying to be faithful. Really, really faithful. Til death do us part just wasn’t good enough, like our old pal Heathcliff of Yorkshire.

The local police have apparently decided to pay Van another visit and he admitted to a “breach of environmental regulations” — eh? — and agreed it was wrong to bring his wife’s remains home – okay… — but he put it all down to “the depth of his love for his wife” and it seems the police can’t really do anything about it anyway.

At the time of writing the authorities haven’t reached an official judgment on whether the statue contains the remains of Van’s wife or not, and if so, what to do, and if not… um… well, what to do. Van has also made veiled threats, claiming he would “live or die” with the statue so obviously nobody wants to see the poor old pseudo-necrophiliac pop his clogs…

Tim Burton este personajul real, care pentru mine inseamna mai mult decat i aspiratie. Pentru a ajunge la nivelul lui de nebunie, chiar paranoia, iti trebuie ani de risc si de creatie continuua. Si sunt dispusa la multe incercari. Un stil nevrotic de a fi acceptat. Filme de un real succes international. Pictura de imensa imaginatie. Jocuri de cuvinte, nebunie si o doza mica de psihoza au facut dintr-un baiat care in anii de liceu aducea a tocilat, intr-unul dintre cei mai mari si neintelesi genii in viata. Caractere ale unor personaje care par atat de naturale, dar in spatele carora stau ani de creatie si de sudoare. Filme atat de fascinante, diferite si unice, dar totusi cu un numitor comun, un stil demonic si rece in spatele unor comedii de inceput de secol 20 in spatii comune dar totusi imune in fata trecerii timpului.

‘Beroepsdracula’
Het boek bevat tekstbijdragen van ‘mevrouw Burton’ Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Danny DeVito, huiscomponist Danny Elfman, ‘beroepsdracula’ Christopher Lee en Winona Ryder. Wanneer het boek gaat verschijnen en wat het gaat kosten, is nog niet bekend. Wel zeker is dat de Burtonbijbel deze herfst het levenslicht gaat zien. Wie meer wil weten en wie nu al een exemplaar wil reserveren, moet de supergeweldige website van Tim Burton maar checken!

Mulţi ar spune că Halloween-ul e o sărbătoare a horrorului. Este total adevărat, doar că, deşi cam orice horror merge văzut de această sărbătoare nu tocmai pitorească, sunt câteva filme pe care ash dori să le recomand cu toată căldura.

Primul dintre ele, e cred că cel mai bun film pentru această ocazie. Deşi nu este horror de loc, ci din potrivă e o comedie-musical, e cel mai potrivit pentru tema Halloween-ului. Este un film pe care l-am mai menţionat în unul din posturile cu şi despre filme. Dar să nu o mai lungesc, vorbesc, bineînţeles despre cunoscutul film al regizorului Tim Burton, “A Nightmare Before Christmas” . Spun că e cel mai potrivit, pentru că personajul principal, Jack Skellington, numit şi “The Pumpkin King” e celebritatea oraşului Halloween. Ce putea fi mai nimerit?. Nu merită să vă descriu filmul mai… amplu ( spre a fi mai elevat), este un film care trebuie neapărat experimentat.

Al doilea film e tot din palmaresul aceluiaşi regizor. La fel ca anteriorul, l-am mai menţionat într-unul din posturile anterioare despre filme. E vorba despre “The Corpse Bride“. Până şi titlul trădează tematica filmului. Citez: “Filmul este despre un tânăr care se căsătoreşte din greşeală cu o domnishoară decedată. Pe lângă povestea foarte interesantă avem şi muzica de calitate, având în vedere că filmul e un muzical. După cum spuneam, la Tim Burton, atmosfera e de toată lauda, iar animaţia asta nu face excepţie.” Acestea fiind spuse cred că pot trece la următorul film.

“Edward ScissorHands” e titlul celui de-al treilea film. Cu Johnny Depp ca actor principal, cu Tim Burton ca regizor şi cu o idee genială, filmul e extrem de potrivit pentru Halloween. Pe scurt, filmul este despre un robot, făcut după om de un savant, care incearcă să se integreze în societate, dar fără rezultat. După cum spune şi titlul, robotul are mâini de foarfece, pentru că savantul a murit înainte să îl termine. Un film excelent. Recomand oricui!

Al patrulea film şi probabil ultimul de care am să vorbesc este, normal, tot un film de Tim Burton, şi anume “ Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” tot un film pe care l-am mai menţionat. Pentru o descriere mai amănunţită puteţi intra aici.

După cum probabil aţi observat, toate filmele menţionate sunt regizate de Tim Burton. Cred… ba chiar consider că acest regizor ar fi putea numit cu uşurinţă regizorul Halloween-ului. De ce? Pentru că toate filmele lui care au o tentă spooky, chiar dacă nu sunt tocmai horror, sunt parcă special creeate pentru Halloween. Tim Burton are un mod specific de a combina morbidul cu amuzamentul, şi asta e tocmai scopul Halloween-ului. Alte filme pe care aş mai putea să le recomand doar în trecere sunt “Sleepy Hollow” sau mai pe limba noastră, “Legenda Călăreţului Fără Cap” din nou, specifică de Halloween, sau orice alt horror cu zombie, fantome, şi multe alte “mascote” ale Halloween-ului.

Sper că v-am sporit curiozitatea cu aceste filme şi până la ceva posturi viitoare, numai bine!!! Trick or Treat!!!!

This is Halloween- Nightmare before Christmas

   Bom, eu queria poder fazer uma listinha para vocês de animes de terror bons para se ver no Halloween, mas…

  Bom, eu serei sincera, não sou muito fã de horror…

  Então fugindo  um pouco das animações japonesas (O.o choquei!!) (caaalma, é só um pouquinho), e fugindo também do lado dark da força, eu lhes darei apenas umas lembrançinhas singelas em comemoração ao dia de hoje.

  Pra começar, a abertura de Nightmare Before Christmas, conhecido no Brasil como O Estranho Mundo de Jack. Eu amo esse filme, que foi um dos grandes sucessos da carreira de Tim Burton (aaamo o Tim *o*). A música em questão é “This is Halloween”, que eu considero a melhor do filme.

  Continuando nos filmes do Burton, fiquem com o vídeo de uma das partes mais fofas de Corpse Bride ( A Noiva Cadáver). Nessa parte, Emily canta “Tears to Shed”, quando ela está triste por Victor preferir casar-se com Victoria.

  Outra parte adorável do filme é o dueto no piano entre Victor e Emily

  Sim, eu sei que nem The noghtmare Before Christmas, nem Corpse Bride são filmes de terror (obvio), mas, a mallu detesta horror, ao mesmo tempo em que ama as fofuras bizarrinhas do tio Tim Burton.

  Eu recomendo ambas as animações, mas confesso que, ao contrário da maioria, eu prefiro a Noiva Cadáver, por ter uma profundidade maior na questão sentimental. Mas eu amo os dois ^^

Timothy William “Tim” Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an American film director, producer, writer and artist. He is famed for his dark and quirky films, such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he co-wrote and produced. He is also famous for being the director of several blockbusters including Batman, Batman Returns, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Since directing his first feature (Pee-wee’s Big Adventure) in 1985, he has gone on to direct and produce numerous films, many of which have won Academy Awards. He frequently works with close friend Johnny Depp, musician Danny Elfman and partner Helena Bonham Carter.

• Arame, pode ser 2 cabides de arame tambem, desde que voce consiga dobra-los
• Meias calças 5/8 brancas
• Tinta acrilica da cor que voce quiser
• Gliter
• Fosforo e incenso
• Fita isolante
• Cola quente e para tecido
• Fita de cetim grossa

Pegue um arame e modele em formato de uma asa, pode sero formato que voce quiser, junte as duas pontas e enrole com fita isolante. Faça o mesmo com mais 1 ou 3 arames. Envolva cada asa com uma meia calça e prenda na ponta com fita isolante.

Queime um incenso e encoste em partes da asa com cuidado para naofazer buracos muito grandes, nao precisa ser feito com incenso, mas deve ser feito com algo que nao deixe fazer buracos muito grandes.

Pinte com a tinta para tecido e passe o gliter, voce pode tambem colar strass com cola para tecido, essa parte de decoraçao fica a seu criterio, voce pode colar borboletas, fazer desenhos ou o que quiser.

Junte as asas com a fita isolante, perto do centro onde todas as asas estao juntas, cole na asas, de cada lado, 2 pedaços de fita de cetim, um emcima um em baixo, vai servir para voce amarrar como se fosse alças de mochila em voce. Envolva a parte que tem fita isolante com a fita tambem. Para colar use a cola quente.

Noiva Cadaver:

Voce precisa de:

• Vestido de noiva velho, que possa ser rasgado, voce pode encontrar em brechos;
• Véu de noiva
  
• Papel de jornal
• Cola fria e quente

Um pouco abaixo do peito no vestido, do lado direito, corte um pedaço. Agora para o papel mache, pegue o jornal, pique-o e deixe de molho na agua com um pouco de agua sanitania por 10 horas, esprema a massa para tirar o excesso de agua e bata no liquidificador, despeje a massa formada no recipiente e adicione a cola fria para formar a massa, modele com as maos em formato de costelas, que fiquem um pouco maiores do que o buraco no vestido, e deixe secar. Quando seca, cole no vestido na parte de dentro com a cola quente, nao se esqueça de usar uma blusa preta por baixo. Use o véu de noiva e para a maquiagem veja no post anterior.

Boneca:

Essa é bem simples, voce só precisa de uma blusa branca com mangas bufantes, uma saia pregueada, meias 3/4 ou 5/8 listradas, sapatinho tipo boneca, sangue falso e botoes coloridos e grandes.

Costure os botoes na blusa em pontos estrategicos, como um pouco acima do peito de um lado só por exemplo. Jogue o sangue falso na blusa, saia e meia. E é só isso!

…and who can resist a little Gilbert action?

I’ve always loved Halloween, because it’s one of the most symbolical events of the year: it marks the passage from autumn to winter and it represents a moment where the suspension of disbelief is a must, and everybody can pretend to be someone else. Many of my favourite movies are set at Halloween (John Carpenter’s movie with the same title and Donnie Darko, for example), and this is another reason why I think it’s a magical night.

I’m Italian, so I live Halloween as an imported festivity. Nevertheless, I’ve been carving pumpkins for Halloween for ten years, one of the moments of the year I love most. My husband usually plants pumpkins in our vegetable garden, so there’s no need for us to buy them, but I’d love to visit a pumpkin patch. A celebrity who seems to share this love for Halloween and for carved pumpkins is Christina Aguilera, who always celebrates this festivity and goes to pick some pumpkins to carve. This year she went to Mr. Bones pumpkin patch with her husband Jordan, her mother Shelly and her adorable son Max. In this occasion, she showed once more her love for plaid shirts.

She wore a cotton brown and pale blue plaid shirt with grey jeans (with busted knees) and lace-up combat boots. Max is wearing a yellow and light blue plaid shirt too!

In this shot we can have a better view of the accessories she chose to complete the outfit: her trusty Alexander Wang Fanny Pack in denim leather and a pair of Prada sunglasses in Honey Brown.

I don’t own any bag by Alexander Wang, but I must admit his bag collections are very interesting. I like the materials he uses (leather that looks like denim, for example) and the simple shapes of the bags.

Isn’t this pic super-cute? I’m sure Max was going to fall asleep, because my daughter does this when she’s tired and wants to sleep. I love Christina’s bare face, blonder-than-blonde hair and red hot nails.

We all know her love for plaid shirts, but scouring archives of past images, I’ve found out that she really loves to wear them to go to the pumpkin patch. Last year she went to a pumpkin patch with a cute little Max (who was wearing a skull t-shirt), wearing another plaid shirt and light grey jeans.

She paired them to black flats, a knitted black cap, a grey bag and an Alexander McQueen black and white skull scarf (thus quoting Max’s t-shirt).

In that occasion, she wore a little make-up – just a pink lipstick and her trademark ruby nail polish.

Christina also loves Halloween, so here are the costumes she has recently worn. In 2009 Max and Christina sported matching skeleton costumes.

Christina also wore Lanvin patent flats, a bowler hat and a pirate patch on her eye. I really love the costumes, because they have a gothic – yet funny – vibe, but I prefer Christina without the eye patch. She was carrying an orange shopping bag with a ghost on it and an Elmo-shaped bucket for trick or treating.

Her trademark is not missing, but in this case it beautifully completes her outfit. Their costumes remind me of the skeleton costumes seen on the Kaiser Chiefs in their Everyday I Love You Less and Less video.

Last year she went treat-or-tricking with her cute family. They all dressed up as characters of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – she was Dorothy, Max was the Cowardly Lion and Jordan was the Scarecrow.

She also carried the ghost orange bag. I have a thing for red glittering shoes, so I really like the Mary-Janes she wore with white socks.

The year before, in 2007, she was still pregnant with Max, but this didn’t stop her from celebrating Halloween. She wore a Spider-Woman costume, with a long black dress (I think the rhinestone web on her belly is really creepy), a purple cape, fingerless gloves and a spider-shaped headpiece; she also carried a Yves Saint Laurent Mini Muse bag in black patent leather. I think this costume is so wrong for her and for the occasion: she looks trashy with all that make-up on and with that puffy hairstyle, and the dress is trashy as well.

On the other hand, in 2006 she sported one of the best Halloween costumes I’ve ever seen. She attended a party in New York, dressed up as the Corpse Bride (Jordan was the Corpse Bridegroom, of course). She took inspiration from the lovely movie by Tim Burton, and re-created the tattered, dusty and bloody wedding gown of the movie’s protagonist in real life. She wore a curly pink wig and a lace-trimmed veil, and carried a bunch of white flowers with red stains on them.

In 2005 she went to a pumpkin patch sporting a very casual – yet cute – outfit. She wore Juicy Couture velour pants, a plain white tee and a comfy Missoni striped cardigan. She also wore pink Havaianas flip-flops and a pink felt hat. She wore no make-up, but her nails and toe-nails were painted red.

In 2005 she dressed up as a sexy Eighteenth-century lady: she wore a strapless champagne lace corset, a tiered tulle skirt, thigh highs, a nice lace umbrella and a lace-trimmed handkerchief. She completed the quirky look with a curly white wig and Christian Louboutin Wallis patent Mary-Janes. This is not her best look, but it perfectly suits her.

I’ll update the post when I get pictures of Christina taking part in this year’s Halloween. In the meantime, are you planning anything special for the event? At the moment, both Bianca and me are sick (gastric flu), but I really hope we will recover in time to go out on Halloween’s afternoon. For the occasion, I have bought the skull mask of Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, my favourite Italian group, whose members never show their face in front of the cameras. They say what Oscar Wilde said – “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth” – a motto I totally agree with.

So I settled on my Hallowe’en costume after much agonising because that’s what I do when I want to dress up. I agonise. For a long time.

And so I will enter the revelry dressed as a Filthy Victorian. For those of you unfamilliar with the term as a name of sorts, it sounds like what you think it might be: a Victorian who is filthy. Except not in an urchin-type manner, oh no – think filthy nobility. Marquis de Sade on something stronger. Anachronism alert. I think too much about costumes. I’m madly tired and awake at the same time.

And, for those of you unfamiliar with the term as a name of sorts, it comes from the lovely Emilie Autumn, a singer to whom a close friend introduced me a couple of years back. I’ve posted some of her work up here before. A family friend commented that she sounds like what Kate Bush might have been today. She plays harpsichord, electric violin, plenty of other delightful-sounding instruments, sings alternately like an angel and a banshee, and describes her brand of songitude as Victoriandustrial. Amused, I have always been. She’s totally nuts as well, which is always a perk.

I think the inspiration came partly from watching Corpse Bride too; I love that film entirely too much.

So I bought a long black skirt and four metres of emerald and black organza and will attempt to make a Victorian-bustle-thing-of-sorts this week. And lace gloves. I won’t make these, I have already bought them. And a fascinator. When I become rich I will buy ridiculous things like this all the time and spend my days rolling in velvet wearing Elizabethan ruffs and monocles. I may invite you to join me for sweet tea.

I saw Up yesterday with two of my delightful friends and though I am not about to review the whole thing I need to say that a) dogs that sound like Foamy the Squirrel make me cry with laughter and b) finding out that animated characters are infertile is intensely heartbreaking. When I first saw the trailer I wasn’t particularly thrilled, mainly because I’m neutral towards Pixar in general, but if you’re having doubts like I had doubts, forget them and go to the cinema. Go and see Up, obviously, not just any random film.

My Southampton accent has gone away! This is because I have spent lots of time in the company of people who speak rather beautifully. The life of the wife is ended by the knife!

Jelly Towers – so my brother introduced me to the parent website and now I’m hooked. Jelly Towers involves feeding jelly cubes to “Jydras” (basically sugar-junkie hydras) using simple balancing methods. It’s meant for younger children than I. But can I do it? Can I fuck. It’s one of THE most frustrating games I have ever stumbled across. Those fucking jelly cubes only have to take a slight knocking to make them fly everywhere. Irritation in game form can now be yours.

How to make ruffles is a skill everybody should learn. Ruffles are sexy.

Gisteren zag ik weer eens een super geweldige film mét schitterende muziek. Het was de schitterende Corpse Bride van Tim Burton, gemaakt met de stop-motiontechniek. Van de eerste tot de laatste seconde was ik verwonderd. Achteraf zag ik nog de beelden hoe alles was gemaakt. Echt geweldig leuk. Blijkt dat ze die poppetjes effectief handmatig geknutseld werden en er een heel mechanisme achterzit. De film is duister, maar met een romantisch kantje.

Here my finally complete version:

I want to spend this month doing a lot of autumn and spooky themed art pieces. October and November are my favorite time of year, I love everything about them. I have so much going on that I want to do, but not enough time to play around with a pencil and get it out!

Here’s a Corpse Bride piece I have in the works. I just started on Emily’s veil, trying to get the piece to feel haunting.

Hoping to have some downtime after PAX and AWA to get to work on a few pieces I’ve had in mind. Here are a few I’ve been  working on. One in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Dreamcast.
