Une production de tradition vieille de plus de 180 ans

Même s’il existe des légendes …

L’une d’elle remonte au VIIè siècle et raconte l’histoire de SAINT-ELOI.

Alors qu’il se rendait en pèlerinage à Rocamadour il s’arrêta pour se reposer dans le petit port de Vellinus (Beaulieu sur Dordogne aujourd’hui).

Les habitants s’empressèrent de lui apporter nourriture et boisson, notamment une jarre de Vin Paillé, doux et réconfortant.
Saint Eloi apprécia tant ce nectar qu’il en commanda quelques outres pour en faire présent au bon Roi Dagobert, lequel fit tant honneur au Vin Paillé qu’il en mit sa culotte à l’envers !

Le Vin Paillé est enfant du sud de la Corrèze.

Il constitue un élément de notre patrimoine local. Dés le moyen age, les artisans vignerons travaillent à son élaboration et mettent patiemment au point la vinification de ce vin.

C’est François PLANCHARD de la GREZE, propriétaire vigneron de Brivezac, qui en 1821,nous retrace la fabrication du Vin Paillé.

A la fin du XXème siècle est créé le syndicat du Vin Paillé de la Corrèze.

Il fédère aujourd’hui une vingtaine d’Artisans Producteurs, répartis sur une zone de production composée de 26 communes sur les cantons de Beaulieu sur Dordogne et Meyssac.

Elaboration

Le Vin Paillé de la Corrèze est obtenu à partir de cépages rouges : Cabernet Franc et Cabernet Sauvignon
ou de cépages blancs : Chardonnay, Sauvignon.

La récolte des meilleures grappes se fait à la main.

Celle-ci sont déposées sur des claies avant d’être mises à sécher dans des locaux aérés naturellement.
Lors du passerillage, le raisin perd son eau et se concentre en sucre et arômes.

A l’approche de noël, les raisins sont pressés, le Vin Paillé est ensuite élevé pendant 2 ans minimum, puis mis en bouteille.

Le Syndicat Viticole du Vin Paillé de la Corrèze est aujourd’hui le seul garant du respect de la tradition pour l’élaboration de ce nectar.
Gourmandise

Le Vin Paillé est un vin de couleur ambré soutenue ou vieil or, au nez de noix, d’abricot sec, d’écorce d’orange, d’épices douces, d’amande ou de cerise confite.

Ce sont des produits sucrés, sans lourdeur, équilibrés en bouche.

Vins souples et gras au nez agréable avec, pour certains, ce rancio qui leur donne cette typicité locale.

Ces vins sont servis en apéritif mais aussi destinés à accompagner le foie gras, les fromages forts ou les desserts chocolatés.

Well I do love chocolate and coffee too but I have a soft spot for chestnuts dating back from my childhood. Chestnut translates to chata^igne or marron. I spent all my summers with my grandmother Paulette in Brive la Gaillarde in Correze. Basically in the South center of France where winters can be very cold and nutritious food such as nuts are a staple in local recipes. I like plain roasted chestnuts but it is the sugary version that has become comfort food for me. It can add up in calories so I am making low calories version with Splenda but here are my favorite French desserts with chestnut.

1. Chesnut spread

Chestnut, vanilla and sugar mashed together. Some people use it as jam, I think it works straight from the spoon (like Nutella) or mixed in with plain yogurt.

2. The legendary marron glace

Very expensive because the cooking process is very long and difficult. It is presented in individual gold wrappers as they are very fragile. They have always been a little too sweet for me.

A rare and seasonal offer from Laduree. Chesnuts with almond paste! Waowwww!

4- Mont Blanc

The white part can be yogurt or at Angelina salon de the in Paris a mix of meringue and whipped cream.

A chestnut mousse dessert that can be found in most supermarkets in France. Amazing and cheap

The traditional French Xmas dessert (the Xmas log) can be made with chesnuts . Either in a frozen version with vanilla and pear. Or with chocolate in the more traditional way (with biscuit and butter). Lenotre has announced the release for this Xmas of a Buche designed with Kenzo with chestnut and green tea!!! Hope I will be in Paris to taste it.

In the shape of a boat this almond, chestnut and chocolate dessert can be found in some patisseries.It is very dense and full of flavors.

La Unión Ciclista Cantimpalos recibió el jueves 26 de octubre la noticia de que Segovia acogerá una de las tres pruebas de la primera edición de la Copa del Mundo de Ciclismo Adaptado.

Durante 2010 se celebrará la primera edición de la Copa del Mundo de Ciclismo Adaptado. Una competición que en su primer año, constará de tres pruebas, una de las cuales se celebrará en España, más concretamente en Segovia. Así al menos, se lo ha confirmado la Unión Ciclista Internacional a la Unión Ciclista Cantimpalos de esta localidad castellano leonesa.

Algo, por lo que este club ciclista llevaba luchando desde hace mucho tiempo. Por eso, desde este momento y hasta el fin de semana del 11 al 13 de junio de 2010, fecha de celebración de la prueba, ya se han puesto manos a la obra para “demostrar a los organismos de la UCI su capacidad organizativa con el objetivo de volver a obtener, como en las pruebas de la Copa de Europa que ya organizó los dos últimos años, la máxima puntuación“.

Junto a Segovia, la primera edición de la Copa del Mundo de ciclismo para deportistas con discapacidad también pasará por la localidad francesa de Corréze del 21 al 23 de mayo y por la canadiense de Baie-Comeau del 2 al 4 de julio.

Setting aside the wheelbarrows and cement mixers.  Emptying the pantry in the Corréze kitchen corner. Stripping the beds of linen. Storing books and magazines away from humidity. Packing my art stuff. Taking my art stuff off the walls. A last sweep.

A last grand créme at the brasserie Les voyageurs at Beaulie where the charming Cecile always brightens my day with a smile.

We enjoyed  two birthdays, many sunsets and starry skies. We had good friends visiting us, staying with us in the barn. We had a surprise visit from good friends in South Africa.  We got to know our neighbors, Jean Pierre and Michéle and Yvonne, 86 years old and along with her chickens, as fit as a fiddle! We became regulars at the bar in Beaulieu, enjoyed  icy cold péche melba on hot afternoons, sipped aperitif at 17:00 along with all the other regulars.

We did lots of hard work:  Turned the barn into a living home. Turned the old homestead into a construction site with ladders and cement and beams and trucks.  There were tears and frustration. Arguments. Difference of opinions. Anger, irritation, misunderstandings. We had blisters and bruises and still have. We rushed off to emergency with a slashed open head, got stitched up and continued working. But we also went for long strolls in the forest, nibbled on peaches and oranges.

We became part of the heart beat of Corréze and we are going home, replenished and with vivid memories, patiently awaiting spring to restart it all over again. Of course! Can’t wait!

August gave way to the celebration of a second birthdya here at Coin Perdu. This time round, we only took a break in between work for early morning croissants and coffee, a gift, a song and continued later the evening with a meal around the fire…where else!

The day started off like any other ay the last few months…old clothes, gloves, work and sweat. But no, nowhere on the chantier(construction site)  was I to be seen. After all, I was birthday girl! So for this dayI roamed about in pretty clothes(to be simply translated as clean clothes !)

And for early morning coffee break, we sat in the shade of the walnut tree. Took of the gloves and feasted on croissants and tarte peches.

Gifts were unwrapped…no boughs and pretty paper this year though! In the spirit of the working year, they came clothed in newspaper and wrappings from the brocantes where they were bought. I giggled at the gifts, clearly seeing the attention that was paid to my comments on our stroll at the brocantes.

And last, but not least. An end to another birthday here at Coin Perdu. A special day with all my loved ones close to me.

I started cleaning our barn this morning and stopped with a brush in my hand, thinking it could make for quite a nice photo…the brush I mean, not me…

I use a lot of different brushes when cleaning and I love natural bristles. They don’t scratch and at the end of their days, they make me feel good – seeing how derelict they look in old age, I feel comforted that I at least still look a bit better and last a bit longer…after the same amount of work!

An entry for macromonday

After knocking down all the interior walls, we were so anxious to see the double volume which we were planning into our  house that we thought we would just rip out one floorplank and one ceiling plank to have  a clean view from top to bottom. Did it stay by only one plank?  No. Of course not! The opening was too small to really see and we are far too greedy. Our excitement got the better of us. One plank became two, and then three and before we knew it, several planks were ripped out in the floor and the ceiling and there we stood like stargazers on a dark cloudless night; staring upwards.

It was great seeing the double volume! Still hight on excitement, we ran right down to the cellar(where we carried out so much dirt!) and once again bent our necks backwards to be impressed by the height of the double volume. We were impressed. Wonderfully high! Open and spacious. Streams of light filtering in through the roof windows.

I could envision life when it will all be done. Until I bent my neck back into normal position and my brain switched on again, pushing reality to the fore, focusing my eyes on the chaos still waiting. Not one for extravagant optimism, I removed myself from the reality staring me in the face and drove off in our Peugeot bleu for a coffee in town, cruelly leaving the rest of the team-my husband and our two daughters- to deal with reality… It helped.

And to end this episode, like every day here At Coin Perdu: never does a day end without a moment of beauty or inspiration somewhere, making us realize again that all the sweat and hard work is worth it.

While taking a break from loading gravel yesterday, this  little baby lizard came into our circle of relaxation. It amused us for quite a while with its typical child like behavior and I could’ve sworn it loved the attention!

One of the wonderful things about living in the country, is that you can have undisturbed views on the moon and stars and skies …and clouds. To photograph and paint them, is a major challenge and of course a major delight.

Clouds have each their own atmosphere; a threatening storm, soft and rain filled, stark white agains a cold winter blue sky, grey mists rolling in…then there are the tales they tell; a dragon flying through the air, a ballet dancer in pirouette, a crocodile yawning, an old man smoking his pipe…Who hasn’t stared at the clouds sweeping by while stretched out on a green lawn -lazy after indulging in too  much watermelon – and wondered what goes on up there and beyond.

The first four cloud images were taken at Coin Perdu in Correze. And the last one was taken at the Loire right opposite our home in Montlouis sur Loire, Touraine.

Brive-la-Gaillarde – La 1er dauphine de Miss Brive perd son titre

C’est une photo comme on en trouve beaucoup sur Facebook, un réseau social très apprécié sur internet. En gros plan, on y voit trois jeunes filles qui se touchent le bout de la langue.

Le comité de Miss Brive y a reconnu Émilie Malmartel, élue en début d’année 1er dauphine de Miss Brive (*). Hier dans un communiqué, il a tout simplement annoncé que la jeune fille était destituée de son titre. Elle ne pourra donc pas participer à l’élection de Miss Corrèze 2010.

La sanction semble bien sévère. Sur la photo, la posture des trois jeunes filles n’a rien de particulièrement érotique, pas plus en tout cas qu’un défilé de jeunes filles en maillot de bain sur une scène ; l’image immortalise plutôt un souvenir de fête (**).

Mais pour Julien Bru, l’organisateur de l’élection de Miss Brive, c’est la réputation du comité qui est en jeu : « Nous lui avions demandé depuis plusieurs semaines de retirer ces photos d’internet. Rien n’a été fait. Il y a quelques jours, de nouvelles photos du même genre ont été diffusées ».

Des images jugées « indignes, inqualifiables » par le comité qui estime, comme au niveau national, qu’« en toute circonstance une miss doit être irréprochable, tant dans ses sorties que dans sa vie personnelle. C’est là toute la différence entre une élection Miss France et une élection de miss étudiante ou miss camping ».

Le comité de Miss France 2010 prend désormais toutes les précautions pour ne plus subir de scandales. Même la vie privée des petites miss locales est épiée, jusque sur les sites communautaires…

Public nous apprend ainsi que la jeune Émilie Malmartel (la première dauphine de Miss Brive) en a fait les frais : la jeune fille de 17 ans a été destituée car elle aurait des photos compromettantes sur son profil Facebook !

La miss a en effet été sanctionné officiellement pour avoir des photos sur son profil perso où on la voit en train d’embrasser deux de ses copines. Julien Bru, le président du comité de Brive, a jugé ces photos “d’indignes, d’inqualifiables et d’impardonnables“.

Pourtant la jeune fille, lycéenne en sciences et technologie du sanitaire social, a déclaré au quotidien La Montagne que ce n’était pas de la provocation, car en fait ce ne serait pas elle qui aurait publié les photos.

De plus, le comité ne l’aurait pas averti de sa destitution, du coup Emilie Malmartel n’a jamais eu le temps de se défendre en expliquant la situation.

Le comité de Miss France 2010 n’exagère t-il pas ? Leur pratique s’apparente dangereusement à une atteinte à la vie privée et à une chasse aux sorcières.

En voulant éviter le scandale, le comité suscite du coup la polémique !

Dans son canapé, Emilie Malmartel affiche son désarroi. A ses côtés, son petit ami la soutient. Cette jeune fille a été destituée de son titre de première dauphine de miss Brive suite à l’apparition, sur le réseau social internet Facebook, de photos jugées “indignes, inqualifiables et impardonnables” par le comité miss Brive. Conséquence : elle ne pourra pas participer à l’élection de miss Corrèze pour laquelle elle était qualifiée d’office. A moins, bien sûr, de s’y présenter à titre personnel et d’être retenue.Julien Bru, responsable du comité “miss Brive”, joint par téléphone il y a quelques dizaines de minutes, persiste et signe : “Il y a eu une photo publiée sur le Facebook de la première dauphine il y a un mois et je l’avais prévenue que ce genre de photos n’était pas digne d’une première dauphine”. Cette photo là montrait Emilie Malmartel et deux copines se toucher le bout de leurs langues. Rien de follement érotique. Plutôt une photo de soirée rigolote comme il en existe des milliers sur le net. Mais le comité ne l’a pas vu ainsi : “Il y a un règlement et les candidates signent une charte dans laquelle elles s’engagent à être irréprochables lors de leurs prestations en tant que miss mais aussi dans leur vie personnelle. Samedi, une nouvelle photo dans le même genre est apparue sur Facebook (Emilie Malmartel y fait un petit bisou sur la bouche à une amie – NDLR) et là, j’ai pris la décision de destituer la première dauphine de son titre”. Derrière la miss Brive Anne-Sophie Fraysse se trouvent désormais Sandrine Pontès, 1ère dauphine et Céline Soulié, 2e dauphine”.

Sentant la polémique monter sur sa décision “définitive”, Julien Bru tient à préciser que “ce n’est pas une question de discrimination et le fait qu’elle embrasse une femme n’est pas déterminant. Elle aurait embrassé un garçon, ça aurait été pareil. Sauf que, bien entendu, le fait que ce soit une femme fait plus scandale…”

La parole est à la défense. Pour Emilie Malmartel, le choc a été rude : “J’ai appris ma destitution vendredi soir en me connectant sur Facebook. J’aurai préféré que Julien Bru m’appelle d’abord pour me prévenir au lieu de faire un communiqué à toute la presse avant”. Réfugiée derrière un sourire un peu triste, la jeune fille, timide, apparaît affectée. “Je n’ai vraiment rien fait de méchant, je n’ai pas fait de photos nues ou érotiques, c’est juste un amusement lors d’une soirée.” Aurélien, le petit ami d’Emilie, fustige surtout la méthode employée : “Ça aurait quand même été normal qu’elle soit prévenue avant plutôt que de l’apprendre sur internet. Elle a été touchée et énervée et je la comprends”. Lui, les photos ne le choquent pas du tout : “On fait tous des soirées et on s’amuse, c’est vraiment rien”. Et Emilie de surenchérir : “Ce n’est pas le cas mais si j’étais homosexuelle ou bi, je n’aurai donc pas le droit de mettre des photos en train d’embrasser ma copine ?”

L’un des problèmes de cette déclinaison locale du scandale Valérie Bègue – Geneviève de Fontenay (la miss France avait été destituée suite à la publication de photos jugées déplacées par le comité miss France), c’est le support sur lequel ont été publiées ces photos. Car les images incriminées figurent ou ont figuré sur le Facebook d’Emilie Malmartel, par principe accessible seulement aux visiteurs qu’elle-même a autorisés.lambda n’a donc pas accès à ces photos là. “En plus”, ajoute Emilie, “c’est même pas moi qui ait mis ces photos en ligne, c’est des “amis” Facebook, et ces amis là ont signalé sur le site que j’étais sur leurs photos à eux, ce qui a fait apparaître automatiquement les photos sur mon Facebook !” L’internaute

Echarpe ou pas, Emilie Malmartel fera son possible pour assouvir sa passion en montant sur des podiums. On pourra la voir très bientôt défiler au festival du mariage de Brive. En attendant, l’ex-première dauphine a choisi de s’amuser un peu de sa destitution en posant pour nous avec son petit ami pour illustrer cet article. Sans doute une manière d’avaler au mieux la pilule au goût amer.

Les photos d’Emilie Malmartel, première Dauphine, sont, selon lui, “indignes”, “inqualifiables” et “impardonnables”.
L’affaire débute il y a un mois. Un cliché de la jeune fille est publié sur le réseau social Facebook. On la voit, avec deux copines, se toucher le bout de leurs langues. Rien de très érotique, plutôt le  “souvenir” d’une soirée rigolote comme il en existe des milliers sur le net. Mais le comité, lui, n’a guère goûté la plaisanterie: “Il y a un règlement et les candidates signent une charte dans laquelle elles s’engagent à être irréprochables lors de leurs prestations en tant que miss mais aussi dans leur vie personnelle”. On demande à la demoiselle de retirer les images qui dérangent. Rien n’est fait. Samedi, une nouvelle photo dans le même genre figure sur sa page. Elle fait un bisou sur la bouche à une amie. Provocation? Pas de doute pour Julien Bru: “J’ai pris la décision de destituer la première dauphine de son titre”. Et il choisit de faire passer l’info… sur // Facebook.

Adieu le titre de miss Corrèze auquel elle pouvait prétendre, et peut-être, celui de miss France. A moins, bien sûr, de s’y présenter à titre personnel et d’être retenue. Mais Emilie n’y croit pas: “Julien Bru ne reviendra pas en arrière”. Elle croit savoir qu’il a, en plus, “une dent” contre elle.
En fait, Emilie explique qu’elle a été piégée par internet. Elle argue qu’elle n’est en rien responsable de l’apparition des clichés: “Ce n’est pas moi qui les aie mises”. En plus, elles ne sont accessibles qu’à des visiteurs qu’elle-même autorise. Exit, donc, le voyeurisme de l’internaute lambda. Dans le règlement, rappelle-t-elle, “seules les photos nues ou érotiques” sont prohibées. Alors, où est le mal? Peut-être dans le fait qu’elle embrasse une fille? Emilie le croit: “Ce n’est pas le cas, mais si j’étais homosexuelle ou bi, je n’aurai donc pas le droit de mettre des photos en train d’embrasser ma copine?” Julien Bru, qui a senti poindre la polémique, a déjà préparé sa réponse: “Elle aurait embrassé un garçon, ça aurait été pareil. Le regard azur d’Emilie se perd un instant. Aurélien, son petit ami, lui prend la main: “Elle n’est pas obligée d’être bonne soeur. C’est sa vie privée”. Elle renchérit: “C’était juste un amusement lors d’une soirée”.
Depuis, les photos ont été retirées. L’écharpe, elle, s’est envolée. Honoré de Balzac l’avait pourtant dit: “Il ne faut pas courir deux lèvres à la fois”.
Pas sur la bouche.
Pas sur la toile.

After the good rains of yesterday, this morning’s walk provided many opportunities for photos. Drops on plants and fences, water puddles, the snails were abundant and gay in their feasting, the mud stuck optimistically to my hiking boots, making them heavier with each step and I arrived wet and dirty back home. Nothing a shower and good coffee couldn’t fix.

I played around with some water drops on fences and leaves. Back home I realized there wers some dust particles on my lense which shows up on my photos. I was in no mood to go all the way back and redo it all. So it comes down to living with it. I can do that. A lesson for the future:  clean lenses more often.

An entry for Macromonday.

After deciding that the basement is not the place to start the restoration process, we moved up into the house and and started swinging a hammer to break down all the inside walls. It felt very destructive to break down a wall and my feeble effort at knocking the wall  had Hartman take over the hammer to get the job done at least in our lifetime.

From there on it was quick and relatively easy and the pity on the walls got less andthe blows more powerful. Each rhythmic swing would be a blow against the injustice you’ve suffered in the past – maybe that job you never got, or that bicycle in another lifetime you never received…or maybe even the slap on the bottom from your father for your brother’s misbehave. Whatever the reason, the walls got lower, and  all injustices disappeared under the heavy hammer.

The hard work showed up when all the rubble had to be carried out and away. We have become regulars at the dechetterie(dumping site) and the remorque stood at the ready for one load after another.

After the day had come to an end, we put down the gloves hammer and like ususal…lit our fire outside and reflected with satisfaction on the day’s work with a glass of wine, while rubbing sore muscles with aAloe Vera hot gel and bruises with Arnica.

We have a daughter who is as mighty with the knife as she is with swinging a hammer. Thanks to her, we had many a great dinner at the end of a tiring day.

The Scottish thistle(Onoporon Acanthium) is a  wonderful source for photography(and painting!). The cows graze all around them and we walk wide circles around the thistle, but it seems the insects are fearless…

Every stage of flowering has its charm and right now, here in France, they are  in full bloom and  just starting to burst open to set free those feather light plumes…how can we not revel in its beauty, like the insects obviously do!

“Nuts”…is something that goes around Coin Perdu every day. Without “it”, we won’t be able to renovate our mountain home. It slurps up our money and our minds.  But it feeds us  some moments of fun as well…

An entry for Sunday stills – aww nuts!

Pour les vacances de la Toussaint 2003, nous avions projeté de retourner dans le désert des Bardenas, en Espagne, pour faire du VTT en débardeur. Mais la météo prévue sur toute l’Espagne, et la plus grande partie du sud de la France était résolument à la pluie. Alors, on a déniché sur Internet un petit triangle relativement épargné par les prévisionnistes. Notre destination serait finalement la Corrèze, entre Tulle et Brive.

Petit problème technique pour Oliv dans la descente de “la Chaise du diable”. Pas sûr que Bruno arrivera à la dévoiler celle-là…

Un repos bien mérité sur les hauteurs de Collonges-la-Rouge, après une montée d’anthologie.

Des cèpes de Tchernobil, des orgies de trompettes de la mort, à-côtés bien sympas de cette région, qui ont illuminé nos repas du soir.
