Será que erramos? Todas as janelas do prédio estão fechadas neste final de tarde, início da noite. Estamos numa das avenidas mais movimentadas da cidade de São Paulo, e – ao menos para quem vê esta antiga construção por fora – parece não há mais ninguém no endereço que temos em mãos.  Mas havia alguém ali.

Passando pela recepção do conjunto que procurávamos, a sensação inicial é que adentramos num outro tempo. O papel de parede, os móveis, a cortina, tudo parece remeter à aristocracia européia antes da Revolução Francesa. Ou – o que é mais surpreendente – ao artista que é centro de nosso trabalho agora, Ray Caesar. Não, nós não tínhamos errado. Na verdade, parecia que não poderíamos estar mais certos.

Quem nos recebeu é uma mulher de 28 anos. Seu nome é Leandra, mas preferimos chamá-la pelo apelido, Sher, que combina muito mais com tudo que está ali. O nome veio de uma abreviação de um outro apelido, relacionado à transparência, e sugere poeticamente uma combinação entre “she” e “her”. Ela tem a pele muito branca, o cabelo preto liso, roupas pretas, e um pequeno corset que desenha sua cintura.

Ali é a sede da grife dela, chamada apropriadamente de Madame Sher (um pronome de tratamento que já indica bem o universo em que estamos). É a primeira grife que fabrica corsets no Brasil, um espartilho rígido usado entre o busto e a cintura, e que é usado para modelar a cintura das mulheres.

Sher nos conta num português impecável (coerente com sua postura, seu gestual, sua roupa e seus adereços), a história do corset: desde que surgiu na história da moda, no século XVI,  até seu uso em figurinos de inspiração punk, BDSM e afins. Atualmente, no Brasil, a fama de sua loja ultrapassou os segmentos, e há clientes dos mais variados estilos.  Uma visita ao seu site já dá uma idéia da sua difusão hoje: seus corsets estão em editoriais e anúncios com Gisele Bündchen e Juliana Paes, em cantoras como Zizi Possi, em revistas como Vogue e Sexy, e em matérias para programas de TV, como o “Superpop” (de Luciana Gimenez, na Rede TV) e “A Noite é uma criança” (de Otávio Mesquita, na Band), entre outros.

Tanta difusão tende a levantar fumaça sobre alguns dos aspectos mais interessantes do corset no Brasil. Segundo Sher, quando ela começou a fabricar essa peça, muitos de seus compradores eram ligados ao universo do fetichismo (que é uma dimensão do erotismo presente em “Darkland”). Um assunto que não tem pudores em tratar, tal como ela mesma diz e mostra (para não deixar reticências sobre isso, e desfazer meias palavras diante de tabus, ela apresentou-nos um chicote de dominatrix, que guarda no armário de sua sala de recepção).

A palavra “fetichismo” originalmente tem a ver com “feitiço”, isto é, com a magia que se atribui a objetos inanimados (tal como viu Charles De Brosses no século XVIII). Num espetáculo que trata – como bem observou Alejandro Ahmed, numa conversa com a Vitrola Quântica -  de sujeitos que querem ser objetos, e objetos que querem ser sujeitos, nada mais a ver.  É isso que ele bem viu, sem dúvida, e também – tal como pretendemos ainda investigar – o fetichismo no seu sentido erótico.

Para não voar, ou adiantar demais nesse momento, basta pensar que o erotismo pode ter uma íntima ligação com um corset: numa relação sado-masoquista, por exemplo, o dominador pode punir seu submisso com o uso de uma peça como essas, assim como também pode resolver usá-la, ainda que seja por puro ornamento. Um teatro de poder e sexo, que pode envolver a modificação do corpo.

Aliás, a relação entre corpo e corset, como lembra Sher, é levada quase ao limite numa outra prática, o “tight lacing”. A primeira vez que ouvi falar disso foi numa entrevista que fiz anos atrás com Karina Raquel, a Fascinatrix, que estrela pocket shows burlescos inspirados nas pin ups, nos anos 40, em Dita Von Teese, e muito mais.

Em linhas gerais, o “tight lacing” é a prática de usar corsets por um longo período, com o objetivo de curvar em definitivo as costelas flutuantes, e reduzir a cintura. Uma prática instigante para refletir sobre as influências do corpo sobre a moda, e da moda sobre o corpo, que são algumas das questões da Vitrola Quântica.

As bailarinas da companhia já haviam usado o corset em alguns ensaios, e também num primeiro vídeo gravado para o Rumos Itaú, por sugestão da estilista Karlla Girotto, responsável pelo figurino de “Darkland”. Como já dissemos, ela já tinha utilizado esta peça no seu desfile inspirado em Ray Caesar, e foi graças a ela que chegamos à grife que visitamos.

No seu atelier, Sher tirou as medidas das bailarinas – cujas cinturas já são desenhadas pela própria dança – e apertou-as com vários modelos de corset. Dentro de alguns dias, elas vão receber novos corsets, desenhados especialmente para elas pela própria Karlla, e confeccionados na Madame Sher.

Assim, mais um mundo de investigação se abre para o movimento em “Darkland”. Com as cinturas apertadas, as bailarinas descobrem novos percursos, novas sensações, novas “lands” dentro e fora de si mesmas.

19.2 million people watch Donny Osmond win

NEW YORK — An estimated 19.2 million people watched Donny Osmond win “Dancing With the Stars” — the smallest audience for the show’s finale since the first season. This was the ninth edition of the contest, one of television’s most popular shows. The Nielsen Co. says ratings have been down all season for the show, an indication that viewers weren’t as attached to the contestants as they had in the past. Osmond said the show has been a highlight in a career of ups and downs. He competed during the show’s finale Tuesday against singer Mya and Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rock star Ozzy Osbourne.

Donny Osmond was declared the new champion of “Dancing With Stars” on Tuesday night, taking home the show’s mirror ball trophy in the season finale of the ABC contest reality program. Osmond, the former teen pop star of the singing Osmond family, said the show has been a highlight in a career of ups and downs. “I did it!” Osmond exclaimed. He promptly rushed to the audience and plucked out his wife, Debbie, whom he carried across the stage. Helping push Osmond over the top was the tango he performed Tuesday with his professional dancing partner, Kym Johnson. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba hailed it as “artistry in motion.” It earned the top score of the final performances. Three celebrities made it to the finale of the show’s ninth season — Osmond, Mya and Kelly Osbourne, the daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. The show picks a winner with a combination of judges’ scores and viewer votes. Mya entered as the favorite, having won the highest scores on Monday’s show. Dancing with Dmitry Chaplin, she performed a jive. “I’m just so happy to have made it to the finals,” Mya said after the loss. The 30-year-old singer is most famous for collaborating on the Grammy-winning hit “Lady Marmalade” from the soundtrack of 2001’s “Moulin Rouge!” Osbourne was the first of the three eliminated. Was Jesus taught by the Druids of Glastonbury? New film claims it is possible he came to England

As a book of record the New Testament doesn’t do too well on the early life of Jesus Christ. The large holes may explain why so many outlandish theories have been able to build up about what the Son of God got up to as a boy. But among those myths most perpetuated is that he visited Britain  -  an idea immortalised in the opening lines of William Blake’s Jerusalem.

But did Jesus build a chapel beneath Glastonbury Abbey (pictured here), as a new film suggests?

Now a film has sought to add flesh to the fable by claiming it’s perfectly plausible the Messiah made an educational trip to Glastonbury. And Did Those Feet explores the idea that Jesus accompanied his supposed uncle, Joseph of Arimathaea, on a business trip to the tin mines of the South-West. Whilst there, it is claimed he took the opportunity to further his maths by studying under druids. Unsurprisingly, the documentary stops short of concluding the visit did take place, noting ‘Jesus’s shoe has not turned up’. However, the makers insist that while the visit is unproven, it is possible. The theory is that he arrived by sea, following established trading routes, before visiting several places in the West Country. In the film, Dr Gordon Strachan, a Church of Scotland minister, says it is plausible Jesus came to further his education. The country is thought to have been at the forefront of learning 2,000 years ago, with mathematics particularly strong. Ted Harrison, the film’s director, said: ‘If somebody was wanting to learn about the spirituality and thinking not just of the Jews but also the classical and Greek world he would have to come to Britain, which was the centre of learning at the time. ‘Jesus was a young man curious to find out about all sorts of things. ‘We know there is a huge gap in the life of Jesus between when he was born and when his ministry started.

‘He would have come to learn what was being taught about astronomy and geometry which was being taught at “universities” run by druids at the time.’Mr Harrison, a former BBC religious affairs correspondent, says Jesus may just have been a boy when he left the Middle East for England.Tresanton St Mawes in the west country which looks towards the Roseland peninsula, where the film claims Jesus spent some time He said: ‘He started the ministry at about the age of 30. There is only one mention in the Bible between his birth and the start of the ministry.’That is when he was around the age of 12 and went to the temple and astounded the learned experts with his knowledge. One could speculate he had just come back at that point.’ Alternatively, he may have made the visit when in his teens or 20s and used his earnings as a carpenter to fund it. Jesus is said to have built a chapel in Glastonbury  -  and when theologian St Augustine heard of it 1,400 years ago, he wrote to the Pope to tell him about it. Mr Harrison said: ‘The concrete evidence is this reference by St Augustine that at Glastonbury there was a small building or church that was put up by Jesus.’He added that Blake’s hymn Jerusalem refers to the visit with its opening lines: ‘And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England’s pleasant pasture seen?’Mr Harrison said there were ‘no archaeological finds’ to back up the myth, but ‘by exploring the legend, we are opening up a fascinating new insight into early Christianity’.

Selfridges said sales of its luxury fashion corsets were up 70% as stocks of Bordelle’s £900 feather girdle sold out in 24 hours at its Oxford Street store in central London.

British designer Alex Popa, 27, said: ‘The items are more flexible than the traditional pieces,’ said Miss Popa. ‘If you are daring enough you could pair a corset with a pair of leggings and go out clubbing or to a party, but they can also be worn in the boudoir. ‘It is more of a mix between outer-wear and underwear. There was nothing out there that was doing in-between. Lingerie was very static but my designs focus more on design. ‘It has helped a lot that we are popular with celebrities. We made one of our designs for Lady Gaga, and we have made items for Shakira as well as pieces for Christina Aguilera’s new movie Burlesque.

Vcs já ouviram falar de Tight Lacing?

Tight Lacing, ou “laço apertado” em uma tradução literal, é o nome dado à prática de usar um corset por longos períodos, no intuito de alterar a silhueta reduzindo a cintura. O Corset utilizado para este fim é uma evolução dos espartilhos que nossas bisavós e tataravós usaram, que não tem nada a ver com o que hoje chamamos de espartilho encontrado à venda em lojas de lingeries e sex-shops.

Os Corsets são construídos com tecidos resistentes, em várias camadas e com reforços em áreas estratégicas, amarrados nas costas e com barbatanas rígidas, normalmente de aço ou alumínio.

É fato conhecido desde a Idade Média que a pressão constante do Corset sobre a cintura e costelas inferiores por 16 a 24 horas por dia acaba por curvar gradualmente as costelas flutuantes, e com o tempo a alteração se torna definitiva. Porém, além do Tight Lacing exigir disciplina e força de vontade, deve ser praticado com critério, pois assim como a redução da cintura é um fato historicamente comprovado, também é indiscutível que o uso de forma exagerada ou com pouco critério pode ocasionar vários problemas de saúde.

Para a efetiva redução da cintura, modificação da localização de órgãos internos e reacomodação das costelas, o corset deve ser bem reforçado, ter preferencialmente barbatanas de aço e ilhoses bem próximos.
Alguns cuidados devem ser tomados na escolha da peça usada: obviamente o corset para Tight Lacing deve ser feito sob medida; não deve ser muito alto na parte superior para não se tornar incômodo ao sentar; na parte inferior não deve ser muito curto, pois corre o risco de causar depósito da gordura abdominal na parte livre de pressão, criando uma indesejável barriguinha; deve-se evitar materiais impermeáveis ou que dificultem a respiração da pele; por fim deve ter um diâmetro de 10 cm inferior à sua cintura quando fechado.

Os modelos mais indicados para uso contínuo são os Underbust e Waist Cinchers, por serem mais confortáveis e permitirem uma melhor movimentação.

Underbust:

São corsets abaixo do busto, devem ser usados com blusas por baixo, o que garante uma maior diversidade de combinações e variações de uso da peça.

Waist Cincher:

O Waist Cincher foca a região da cintura por ser mais curto em cima e em baixo, aparentando uma circunferência menor.

Você deve estar se perguntando sobre os efeitos práticos do Tight Lacing. Existem na internet alguns sites com previsões sobre diminuição – claro que se deve ter cuidado com estes dados, pois quando se trata do corpo humano, qualquer previsão é um exercício de adivinhação. Apenas para ilustrar transcrevo uma destas previsões:

“Um Corset pode reduzir a cintura aproximadamente 2% a cada semana, até que você alcance uma redução de 75% da cintura original após, mais ou menos, 3 meses de uso”.

Quanto a números, segue um exemplo: As medidas foram tiradas sem o corset, a inicial antes de colocar e a final logo após retirá-lo. Os intervalos entre cada período de uso variaram de 4 a 10 horas. Um treinamento mais efetivo de Tight Lacing deve ser realizado com uso ininterrupto e deve-se evitar ficar sem ele por mais de uma hora, embora nem sempre isso seja possível. Assim temos os dez primeiros períodos de uso, para dar uma idéia de evolução real.

Como vocês podem observar a partir do 7º período de uso, o corset pode, e deve, ser usado durando a noite, mas para dormir com um corset deve-se tomar o cuidado adicional de afrouxá-lo de forma que fique bem confortável, tornando a apertá-lo na manhã seguinte. Nos primeiros dias do meu treinamento usei-o apenas durante a noite, e pelo tempo de uso pode-se observar que passei a me sentir confortável após o segundo dia, podendo aumentar consideravelmente o período de uso.

O primeiro objetivo da Tight Lacer é “fechar” o seu corset, ou seja, partindo de uma peça com um diâmetro 10 cm menor que sua cintura, atinge-se o primeiro estágio quando se consegue fechar completamente o corset. Deve-se então utilizá-lo durante mais um período até que surja uma sensação de conforto com o uso, parecendo frouxo, mesmo amarrado ao máximo.

Quando isso acontecer está na hora de trocar seu corset por um modelo menor. O novo corset deve ter novamente 10 cm a menos que sua cintura, e você pode usar o corset antigo para dormir, poupando a nova peça. Repetindo este processo algumas vezes, você encontrará a cintura dos seus sonhos. Porém deve-se tomar o cuidado de não exagerar, pois algumas Tight Lacers tendem a criar uma cintura exagerada, que além de não ser saudável as torna permanentemente dependentes do uso do corset.

Existem pessoas que não podem praticar este treinamento, como diabéticos, pessoas com insuficiência respiratória, pessoas que têm problemas de coluna, etc. Porém, se você está saudável e tem bom senso para fazer um treinamento progressivo e cauteloso, nenhum outro método é tão efetivo para redução da cintura quanto o Tight Lacing.

When purchasing shape wear make sure to wear it several times before a big event. Most products need to conform to a body in order to be comfortable. If a person is uncomfortable, it will show.  That defeats the whole purpose of a shaper.

 Although we are all fabulous 99% of us are to hard on ourselves when we look in the mirror, a shaper can help with that, after having 4 kids and turning 40 there is little I can do beyond a season  of  Nip and Tuck to correct everything.

Dans exactement une semaine, j’aurais 24ans…!

L’année de mes 23ans a forcément été marquée par le LLM à Durham et par toutes les bonnes choses et découvertes culturelles que cette expérience m’a apportée. En un an j’ai l’impression d’avoir grandi et d’avoir pris confiance en moi, et ma façon de réfléchir et de m’exprimer a également évolué. J’ai rencontré énormément de nouvelles personnes, de nouveaux liens sont nés et se sont consolidés. D’autres ont inévitablement éclatés, mais je pense avoir été plutôt heureuse cette année! J’avais des cours intéressants, un mémoire passionnant, des amis adorables, tout plein de sorties et de choses à faire et un petit boulot qui me convenait tout à fait!

Mais voilà qu’une nouvelle année commence… J’ai décidé que cette nouvelle période de ma vie sera marquée par mon premier vrai emploi, et par un nouveau départ à Londres. J’ai envie de profiter de toutes les expériences culturelles et humaines que la capitale peut m’apporter.

L’année dernière j’étais à Edimbourg, mais malheureusement je ne vais pas vraiment fêter mon anniversaire cette année puisque la plupart de mes amis proches ont déjà quittés Durham. Cependant, tout n’est pas perdu car le 29 Novembre il y aura un Vintage Fashion Fair à Newcastle, donc ce sera l’occasion de sortir faire un tour et peut être de voir quelques amis!

Pour l’occasion, je me suis bien sûr amusée à créer une liste d’anniversaire assez utopique… C’est une wish-list totalement irréaliste, où il y a beaucoup de basiques que je m’achèterais une fois que j’aurais enfin un vrai travail, et donc la possibilité de vraiment économiser et de m’offrir de temps en temps une belle pièce.

Malheureusement je n’arrive pas du tout à retrouver l’adresse de son site internet, mais voilà un de ses sacs que j’aime beaucoup, trouvé sur le site du Vintage Fashion Fair où elle exposait ses créations:

Elle proposait ce sac en turquoise, pourpre, noir et rouge bordeaux aussi. Des petites merveilles, mais comme je le disais, assez simples après tout, même si j’adore la forme du sac Docteur.

• Des perles de Tahiti. Je porte mes perles blanches plusieurs fois par semaine, je les adore vraiment. C’est simple, chic et élégant et ne demande aucun effort! Mais j’aimerais vraiment avoir des perles de Tahiti également.

• Un carré Hermès ou alors un Twilly! Je trouve celui-là joli, mais il me fait forcément penser au foulard en soie que j’ai trouvé à la Vintage Fashion Fair…

• Cependant, vu l’état de mes finances, je vais peut être plutôt juste me commander une boîte de fudge de chez Roly’s… Délicieux, et j’en ai pas mangé depuis 6 mois… Je suis raisonnable, non?

• J’aimerais acheter des livres! J’ai envie de lire ‘A Christmas Carol’ de Dickens et ‘Little Women’ de Louisa May Alcott. Dickens parce que c’est de saison, et parce que à part ‘The Pickwick Papers’, je n’ai pas lu ses oeuvres, ce qui est relativement scandaleux. Sinon, je me souviens d’avoir commencé à lire ‘Little Women’ lorsque j’étais plus jeune, je devais avoir 12ans, mais je ne l’ai jamais fini, et la dernière fois que j’ai regardé chez mes parents, je ne retrouvais plus le livre. Je n’aime pas commencer un livre et ne pas le finir…! Donc j’aimerais y remédier, rapidement si possible.

• Du thé! Depuis que Delphine a parlé du thé blanc ‘Avec les Anges’ des Jardins de Gaïa; j’ai terriblement envie de le gouter! C’est apparemment un breuvage paradisiaque qui unit l’élégance du thé blanc avec un parfum de fleurs sauvages, et une pointe de vanille. En plus ça a l’air joli comme tout. Miam!

I’ve finally submitted my third article at Alltern8 about LARPing and Dating. It’s a constant thing to hear people mention how they can never meet a significant other during a LARP. While I’ve seen it happen countless times! To open some eyes about scoring a date at a LARP I’ve written:

LARPing and Dating… Not a Myth

LARPing is a social event. I know! Can you believe it? Being a social event there tends to be some social interaction between people. Usually awkward, not looking in each other’s eyes, shifting your weight from feet to feet, and you can’t remember what you talked about after you walk away. Did I even introduce myself? What class is she?
Yup, that about covers a conversation between two people that are use to interacting with a screen between themselves and humanity. But you are subjecting yourself to actual social event outside of your basement so that alone is something to be proud of.
Most players when they think about the stress of carrying on a conversation do not even think of forming a relationship with someone unless they can call to trade Magic cards. Furthest from their mind is starting a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.
And yet when guys gather around to plan an outing to the local LARP just the mention of lady LARPers have them cheering each other on, slapping each others back and drawing up intensive plans of who is wingman. But they are usually the first ones to mumble a hello and hightail it out of there to the first girl LARPer they come in contact with.
There are many girls out there that have the same reaction! We plan on meeting a lot of guys but it becomes overwhelming when we finally arrive to the camp. If you don’t have the confidence of a movie star the reactions you receive are intimidating enough to send anyone running for cover. And if you have the confidence to actually receive and handle the attention accordingly you become ‘untouchable’ by the guys who are nervous around confident girls and the stuck up princess to the rest.

Adelle Archer, Steampunk Machinist

Here’s the nuts and bolts of Adelle Archer’s day outfit.

(all photos in this post were taken during filming at the Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento, California.  The one to the left was taken on an iphone, and the two below were taken by Heather Redwine).

The outfit revolves around her toolbelt: a red leather studded belt from Five and Diamond.  I filled this with actual tools from my toolbox which made it authentic, but a little dangerous for my dance partners!

I paired this with my kick-ass buckled leather boots that I had purchased many years ago on zappos.

The next big purchased item was the buckled cincher top from Pyramid Collection.  This did not have enough shape (even with a steel-boned corset underneath!) so our awesome costumer Denise added some boning to it.  We also had to tuck in the top ruffle since it was a bit awkward.  With it tucked the cincher has a clean, straight line across the top.

Next I got a short pleated skirt for $10 from H&M.  (I also looked at Forever 21 and Fredericks of Hollywood and Hot Topic, but they were all a little to froo-froo.)  Under the skirt I wore opaque black Danskin leggings.

While at Hot Topic, I got black net cufflets.  On top of these I wore some awesome handmade ruffled cuffs from Choklit’s Adornments for Tarts.

The white blouse is just my everyday work blouse from Ann Taylor.  Who would have thought Ann Taylor could be steampunk? (although, admittedly, I did pick this one because of the slightly pirately ruffles on the sleeves)

For the final touches, I wore big silver hoop earrings, a celtic design necklace I got in Ireland, and a silver wristlet.  And of course the curly curly hair.

Voila!

Um, uhm…do I even need to say anything aside from the fact that this Victoria’s Secret yearly extravaganza is simply spectacular and incredibly sexy?! With models like Heidi Klum and Marissa Miller, it all speaks for itself…enjoy this feast of beauties, fantasy and luxury!

If I ever have one kid, never mind four, I want to know what I have to do to get a figure like Heidi Klum’s just one month after giving birth – she looks absolutely amazing and a picture of health!!

Heidi wowed crowds at last night’s show in her purple corset covered in a half gown with puffs of tulle. The five new models who recently propelled up the modelling ranks to take the coveted position as Victoria’s Secret Angels certainly have some hard work ahead of them to live up to Heidi. They are Emanuela de Paula, Chanel Iman, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel.

They all looked particularly hot in their lingerie which appeared to follow a secret garden/flower fairy theme.

The event featured entertainment from group of the moment, The Black Eyed Peas, with front woman Fergie sporting a fabulous green corset gown – what a show!

I love Victoria’s Secret and want everything from this show. I can’t wait for them to make their way across the waters to London. Soon I’m told, very soon!

So the idea behind the name for my site came from the initial disagreements i had with those closest to me during my year of wedding planning, with TR – the need for Canapes (me no him yes). With Mum – the need for a Corset (me yes her no). One of these choices was sort of money related from my side – if we are feeding ‘them’ a 3 course meal at 6pm and some serious nibbles later on in the evening – who eats that much? Why don’t we save the canape money for something else (church choir /wedding rings). Now, Canapes – yes i like them, and i may be tempted to grab one of them passing by but 9 times out of 10 i don’t. I am happy to wait for a proper meal, they are messy and small. After this discussion I find out that TR is litterally obsessed with them. To my initial horror he proclaimed that the canapes were the best part of a wedding, the only thing he ever remembers at any of the billion weddings he /we have been a guest at and therefore the most important part of the day for him.

Um WHAT?!?! Marrying me? You best friends being your ushers and band? My dress? The speeches? Proud parents and sister???? Nope – the canapes … 

So whilst i digested this comment and realised there was no way i was going to get the bling wedding ring i wanted as were most certainly having canapes (he was an only child until age 7 it’s often his way or the high way!!!!) … I considered the funny disagreements we have and the bits of weddings that stick in our minds the most and plan to mention most of them here. In some ways men are from mars and women venus, but i have also found in my research that most happily marrieds will both tell you:

a) It was without doubt the best day of their life 

b) They wish they hadn’t sweated the small stuff 

c) They loved every minute of being the centre of attention, even the shy-est 

d) The day goes super quickly.

e) Whilst it is hard to keep everyone happy during the run up, on the day you are just not bothered about that person you weren’t sure about inviting or the drunk uncle, everyone beams all day long! 

Try to bear this in mind if, sorry WHEN you disagreeing over something!

In the end we compromised, I was shocked to find out that TR really doesn’t remember our greatest friends weddings apart from the Canapes – even when he was an usher (!!!) and i remember who read, wore, said what, the music, who cried etc, but I am a girl. 

So we are having 3 rather than 5 canapes (less cash as 5 is the norm but the fewer choices the cheaper it is! We both love the canapes – mini shepherds pie, mini goats cheese with spinach thing, mini beef and yorkshire – no fish, at events I hate I when people smell of fish, none that dribble on you and you always need a veggie option and maybe we will have those mince pies. Everyone is  happy!

The corset discussion is more complicated, it depends on so many factors. Some designers offer a beautifully made serious ’suck you in, hold you up, give you a tiny waist’ corset (most Sassi Holford, Ian Stuart, Philippa Lepley, Angelina Collarusso, Elie Saab, Caroline Castigliano, Vera Wang all have them) this is often due to the amount of fabric in the dress, the structure, the type of heavy silks, the size of the petticoat and everything the dress is holding up. 

If you want one of these dresses then a corset is pretty likely for you. They aren’t always necessary. The gorgeous vintage lace and silk dresses never have them. You wont find a corset by Alice Temperley, Claire Pettibone or in many Pronovias dresses and with certain styles you just don’t need them. The ‘need or want’ for a corset doesn’t depend on your size / figure as we all know a corset will make the most of your waist but wont make flesh disappear much like good old spanx so it really does depend on your style of dress. If you have the hour glass figure we all dream of then lucky you, you wont need one either! If you are going for an A line shape, a fabric that is wafty enough to be held by it’s petticoats (tulle / net etc)  - then it is likely you one need one either.

 If you do have one make sure you have a steady handed, non nervous, emotional Mum or BM to do it up for you, i’ve been there and it is hard to work with the little loops when you are shaking with excitement!

A dress is usually cheaper without one as they are pretty intricate and take time to make …

Corsets also add to cleavage in most cases which as previously discussed for us was a no!!

We promised the ladies a reshoot of some of their outfits that we didn’t get to out in Pickering last month due to time and weather. Fotunately we managed to get three perfectly shaped models, two of which are professional dancers. The stuff they can make their bodies do had me feeling phantom pain in my joints. I can’t even bend over low enough to touch my toes. I could probably jump a fence if I was running from some dudes trying to jack me for camera gear though…but that’s all I got in the trunk.

The shoot rolled from 7PM to just after midnight as we cycled through the outfits and models. I didn’t take a setup shot so a description will have to do:

AB800 in B.A.S. (Big Ass Softbox) as main light on a boom overhead of subject. AB400’s for fill and hair lights, and shot against a grey background which I didn’t particularly love. It looked better on the camera LCD but go biggie on the 32″ monitor at home and it wasn’t so lovely. Of course I shot with my recently resurrected EF 50mm 1.4 USM glass. Shot settings varied from f/6.3 to f/11 at 1/60th – 1/125th shutter. ISO 100 for me and ISO 200 for Ed (Nikon).

Despite the wild settings we pulled off some nice shots of the ladies. I’ve never worn a corset (yes they make them for men too) so I don’t know how comfy they are for 5 hours at a time but hat’s off to everyone for hanging in there.

I had a great afternoon with Nicola in our boutique yesterday busily lacing girls into corsets and poking and prodding in a Gok Wan type fashion! Luckily it all went well and we even managed to help burlesque artiste Vicky Butterfly find some lingerie to go with a new costume (all top secret and hush hush). The only downside is that we didn’t get chance to finish our Christmas decorations as it was a little busy. We are definitely going to get them finished for our first late night shopping evening which takes place on Wednesday 25th November (until 9pm). The Portobello Green arcade along with the surrounding area will all be open and there will be burlesque performances and entertainment outside. Even Mr Claus will be making an appearance with his very own grotto in our arcade. Don’t worry if it’s a little chilly as in our boutique we’ll have mulled wine to warm you up!

Last week London’s Time Out magazine did a little feature on our boutique. Burlesque artiste Ophelia Bitz explored the lingerie boutiques of London from good old Marks and Spencer to Rigby and Peller – but classed What Katie Did as ‘her pick’. Thanks Ophelia!

C’est … C’est… C’est…Chichi pompon ! C’est une débauche de volants de tulles et de mousseline. C’est magique c’est le Bonheur des dames que je relis consciencieusement chaque hiver, comme on consulte un ouvrage religieux, une encyclopédie sur la femme. C’est l’orgie de dentelles et de colifichets. Ecoutez comme ça sonne rond en bouche. Impossible d’être vulgaire quand on prononce ces mots là. Adieu ouech ouech, bonjour noblesse.

C’est un hommage à la femme, c’est ce coureur de monsieur Mouret s’inclinant devant la grâce. C’est ce rustre de Butler capitulant devant la garce. C’est une arme absolue dans la main de ces femmes, pas si frêles, pas si cruches, qui ont fait ramper les plus grands. Regardez leurs silhouettes, leurs corps si fiers, corsetés, sublimés.

Car sous les tonnes de tissus, sous les jupons les mantilles, les camisoles et les chemises se trouve le graal. Sa majesté le corset, objet précieux, ultime symbole de la féminité galbe les corps, affine les courbes et défie les lois de l’apesanteur. Finis les seins qui tombent, les tailles épaisses, le ventre ballonné. C’est l’ancêtre de Photoshop, des push up, des crèmes minceurs ! Quel miracle ! Un miracle douloureux certes. Frustrant absolument… une arnaque diront même certains, déçus peut-être devant la transformation de leur moitié enfin dénudée.

Dressée à coup de Sissi, de Peau d’Ane et d’Angélique, j’ai un faible pour ces nippes. J’ai fantasmé sur ces costumes, ces femmes, cette féminité. Alors quand un jour une bonne fée m’a proposée de venir jouer à Cendrillon toute de taffetas vêtue je me suis lancée. Crinoline, corset, jupons, chiffons, je me suis glissée dans la peau de Romy, dans les escarpins de Marie Antoinette !

J’ai valsé dans la salle de balle d’un château, minaudé dans ses jardins, gloussé dans les boudoirs, médits, critiqué dernière mon éventail. La belle vie me direz-vous ! Soit ! Et pourtant… quel exploit pour une minette comme moi !
M’assoir ? Non merci mon cher, ma rate risquerait d’exploser.
Manger ? Sans façon, j’ai déjà grignoté une demi cahuette, je suis rassasiée.
Boire ? Du bout des lèvres. Seul avantage de ce nouvel anneau gastrique.
Danser ? Oui mais alors une valse alors, la tête me tourne déjà…

N’imaginez même pas pouvoir avaler plus d’un macaron Ladurée ainsi engoncée, n’espérez même pas rire aux éclats, fumer, boire ou crier. Adieu les soirées folles, les courses en sac (bon ça admettons), les déhanchements effrénés. Les seins au niveau des oreilles, l’estomac étiré entre les amygdales et le pubis, la taille enroulée autour de votre colonne, c’est toute mon anatomie qui s’est vue chamboulée. Bienvenue dans un monde ou la réserve est synonyme de séduction ou les dames restent dignes, ou les femmes s’évanouissent…

D’ailleurs rien que d’y repenser, j’hyperventile, je redeviens claustrophobe, mon cœur palpite mon cœur s’emballe. Je me sens défaillir.. Vite mon brave… les sels …
