Early detection and prevention are important when it comes to taking care of your teeth and mouth. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gingival inflammation, eventual bone loss, and possibly tooth loss if not treated in a timely manner.

Unchecked or untreated tooth decay can lead to tooth pain, loss of tooth structure, possible root canal, or even tooth loss. A thorough examination and regular checkups by your dentist are recommended twice a year.

Today I want to talk to you about yearly traditions. As you are gearing up for the holidays, you are

Today I want to talk to you about yearly traditions. As you are gearing up for the holidays, you are likely embarking down a familiar path of rituals for you and your family. Maybe it’s making your favorite eggnog recipe or trimming the tree. Perhaps it’s arranging family games, planning a special holiday meal, or stashing presents in your ingenious hiding spots.

I notice a lot of people go through their own mini-makeovers this time of year as well. They perform updates on their homes, make hair appointments to spruce themselves up for their yearly holiday card photo, and come in for teeth whitening procedures to erase coffee, tea, and wine stains and brighten up their smile before the holiday parties.
Yes, that onset of cold weather paired with the festive retail displays and familiar trimmings that line the main streets of Cumming, Johns Creek, and Alpharetta trigger a lot of activity for all of us.

These reminders bring me to a question for you: What triggers your medical upkeep? Do you have certain times of the year that you plan your routine visits to your family doctor, gynecologist, and dentist? Are you reactive, only seeing a medical professional when you think something is wrong? Or do you keep a regular maintenance schedule for yourself and your family?

Hopefully, the latter. It is my philosophy that preventative care is absolutely the most essential way to take charge of your health. I focus on the overall well-being of my patients and, with the help of modern science, can actually foresee dental issues and circumvent most of them before they become a bigger and more costly problem.

Why is this important? Three reasons.

Your comfort.

Your time.

Your money.

That’s right. Preventative care is first and foremost, more comfortable for patients. Heading off problems before they begin saves patients from larger dental procedures such as crowns or root canals. While medical techniques allow me to perform these procedures with a higher level of comfort for my patients, most people would still prefer to avoid them altogether if possible. Crowns and root canals are more costly than preventative care, and they take more time in the office to address and fix.

With just two visits per year for a typical dental patient, I can keep you in preventative mode over the course of your lifetime. We can head off problems before they start and keep more money in your wallet, increase the overall health of your body (we’ll discuss your mouth’s link to heart disease and more in the next blog), and help you spend less time at the dentist.
My philosophy is simple: See me on a regular basis to avoid seeing me even more often than you’d like!

What system do you have in place for preventative care? Please remember to schedule those routine appointments for you and your family before your body triggers an issue for you that could have been entirely prevented!

A beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime is our ultimate goal when treating patients. Your personal home care plays an important role in achieving that goal. It starts at home by eating balanced meals, reducing the number of snacks you eat, and correctly using the various dental aids that help control the plaque and bacteria that cause dental disease.

Tooth brushing – Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed at night) with an ADA approved soft bristle brush and toothpaste.

1.
Place the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums and gently brush using a small, circular motion, ensuring that you always feel the
bristles on the gums.
2.
Brush the outer, inner, and biting surfaces of each tooth.
3.
Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside of the front teeth.
4.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Electric toothbrushes are also recommended. They are easy to use and can remove plaque efficiently. Simply place the bristles of the electric brush on your gums and teeth and allow the brush to do its job, several teeth at a time.

Flossing – Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone.

1.
Take 12-16 inches (30-40cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5cm) of floss between the
hands.
2.
Using your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss, gently insert the floss between teeth using a sawing motion.
3.
Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline.Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each
tooth.

Floss holders are recommended if you have difficulty using conventional floss.

Rinsing – It is important to rinse your mouth with water after brushing, and also after meals if you are unable to brush. If you are using an over-the-counter product for rinsing, it’s a good idea to consult with your dentist or dental hygienist on its appropriateness for you.

Use other dental aids as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist: Interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, irrigation devices, fluoride, medicated rinses, etc., can all play a role in good dental home care.

One of the procedures we have here at Walnut Hill Dental is the Zoom! teeth whitening system. It is a fantastic procedure that produces some of the most spectacular results.

Your smile is important. It’s one of the first things you notice when you meet someone. A whiter, brighter smile is beautiful – it can help you feel better about yourself and make a memorable impression

Your lifestyle and the aging process can stain and darken your teeth. Many things we do on a regular basis can contribute to stained teeth, such as drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine or smoking.

Whitening can get your smile looking its best. Non-professional procedures and clinically unproven teeth whitening tips can often lead to unsatisfactory results, you should look for a whitening procedure that is:

	Fast and convenient
Long lasting
Low sensitivity
Proven to be safe and effective
Performed by a Dental Professional

The flexible trays are removable and virtually invisible, so Invisalign® patients at our cosmetic dentistry practice can enjoy the results of orthodontic treatment without the hassles of metal brackets and wires.
It’s amazing how clueless the public is on all things dental. If I had a dollar for each time a pati

It’s amazing how clueless the public is on all things dental. If I had a dollar for each time a patient confused a post and an implant, I would be driving new Ferraris as apposed to used ones. (wha wha whaaaaaa! Ok I’ll stop whining.) Or, how many times has a patient said: “I don’t have any crowns; I just have a couple of ‘caps’. Forget about their knowledge of inlays and onlays; those are all just “fillings” to John Q. Public. And, don’t get me started with the pervasive interchangeable use of “cleanings, prophies, debridements and scaling.” Many people think veneers are “bondings” and crowns are veneers and the tooth bone is connected to the knee bone and bad breath is caused by Satan.

But the whole freak’n world knows what their PSA, HDL and LDL levels are. Soon my mother will be reciting the Krebs Cycle after one more viewing of the Discovery Channel.

The words we choose in our print marketing media: ads, articles we write, business cards are extremely important. Pay attention to whose eyes they fall on, ie. the non-dental-educated consumer.

Did you know that most people categorize dental implants as a “cosmetic” procedure? This is due to the overload of media that constantly associates the word “implant” with aesthetic, elective treatment. The public hears about implants for breasts, lips, chins, calves, buts and cheek bones. They lump dental implants into the same “cosmetic” category. What does this mean for us? It means if you want to be known as an expert in the dental implant field you better also be known in your area as a “cosmetic” dentist. During my all day seminars that I give all over the North America, I recommend to the audience to copy the name of my practice:

John Smith DDS

Cosmetic, Implant and General Dentistry.

This must be placed on all print collaterals: business cards, stationery, brochures, website, etc.

This tells the public that you are a cosmetic dentist which they think is a specialty, which you and I know it is not, and there fore implies you do whitening and veneers, but also reassures them that you regularly do implants. I have the words “…….and General Dentistry” added to assure the public that I can still do “regular fillings and cleanings”. (when my practice was called “Cosmetic Dentistry”, I was constantly asked by existing and prospective patients: “Do you do regular dentistry, like cleanings and fillings?”

A few years ago I had this small bump on the inner part of my fore arm. It was just a fibroma and I had it removed by a plastic surgeon because I was always told if you want anything done on the skin to look good, “let a cosmetic plastic surgeon do It”. Well, the damn thing left a scar that looked like Nixon which was uglier than the darn bump I had to begin with! I went to a friend of mine who was a dermatologist who was P.O.ed that I did not come to him first. He said “ who do you think are the skin experts??!! What part of Derm in Dermatology do you not understand, you dumb schmohawk!” I explained to Kenny the skin doctor about my pre-conceived notion that plastic guys suture better. After he removed his hands from my trachea, he injected a sclerosing solution which flattened old Tricky Dick down to a flat looking, skin-matching patch which I don’t even notice anymore. (boy, if Nixon had this stuff he would have looked like JFK!)

The lesson Dr. Kenny and I both learned is the power the word “cosmetic” has over the general public. He now refers to his practice in all his print media signage as Cosmetic Dermatology.

Choose your words carefully. It dictates what types of patients and what type of treatment you will be doing.

From Dentalblogs.com: We know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. It also causes an increased risk for health problems, from heart attack and stroke to diabetes complications and low-weight births. But new evidence shows that periodotnal disease can impair mental function, outside of the established connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s or dementia. The newfound link may stem from inflammation in the body that originates in the mouth.

The study, led by Dr. James Noble, involved 2,350 subjects of various genders who were tested for periodontal disease, then underwent a series of mental skills assessments. Adults over 60 with a high level of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen that causes gum disease, were three times more likely to forget a three-word sequence after a time lapse. The higher the pathogen level, the greater the potential for forgetting the sequence.
Published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, this US study by Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York relates periodontal disease to cognitive dysfunction. More research is necessary to support the findings. Read the Reuters press release here.

If you’re looking for a more perfect smile, then you might want to consider veneers. Popular among movie stars and other celebrities, veneers let you change the appearance of your teeth as dramatically as you want. Veneers let you brighten your teeth and straighten your smile – you can even change the size and shape of your teeth.

Veneers can be either composite or porcelain. The veneer is actually a thin piece of porcelain or composite material about the size of a fingernail. Once the custom-made veneer is bonded onto the tooth, it becomes extremely strong. It also blends in with the remaining tooth structure so that it is unnoticeable to the naked-eye. Once in place, it looks, feels, and functions just like a regular tooth.

Veneers are a popular choice for total smile makeovers, letting a dentist change not just the color but also the size, shape, and straightness of your teeth. Veneers are often used for the same reasons as bonding – to lighten stains, close gaps and even alter crooked or malformed teeth. Both can be utilized to change the shape or color of a single tooth or if necessary to revamp the entire smile. Veneers are generally more durable and stain resistant than bonding. Visit our Veneers smile gallery here

Revolutionary methods are now available for bleaching teeth to make smiles sparkle!

Teeth bleaching or whitening lightens the color of teeth whether darkened from age, coffee, tea or tobacco. Its brightening effects can last up to five years after the treatment depending on your personal habits, such as smoking or drinking coffee or tea.

Bleaching has a higher than 90% success rate. Bleaching is tough on stains but gentle on your teeth! Results vary depending on several factors such as teeth stained from smoking; from taking certain medications such as tetracycline during tooth development; or from fluorosis, a condition occurring in the presence of too much fluoride.

Bleaching will not lighten fillings or artificial materials used in dental repair as for crowns, porcelain veneers, etc. Your dentist may discourage treatment if you have sensitive teeth, periodontal disease, teeth with worn enamel or if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding.

If you need 6 implants that will cost you $18,000 dollars which is quite a lot of money for a dental insurance company to cover.

If they have to cover that type of costs then the premiums will have to be much higher than what you are currently paying which will make dental insurance highly expensive and take it out of reach of most ordinary folks.

Restoring your smile to its natural luster. People with most types of discoloration can achieve lighter teeth from either the “In Office Bleaching” or “At Home Bleaching”. The type of stain you have will affect how much whitening you will experience.

When activated by a special light, the whitening process is accelerated to provide dramatic results. It is very important to continue to have your regular cleanings and check-up appointments every 6 months. This keeps your teeth the brightest they can be.

In the blossoming world of cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening is the most prominent procedure. Universally valued by men and women alike, whitening (or bleaching) treatments are available to work with every budget, time frame and temperament.

The long and the short of it is that teeth whitening works. Virtually everyone who opts for this cosmetic treatment will see moderate to substantial improvement in the brightness and whiteness of their smile. However, teeth whitening is not a permanent solution and requires maintenance or “touch-ups” for a prolonged effect.

Your smile speaks volumes about you. White teeth often lead the viewer to believe you find your heal

Your smile speaks volumes about you. White teeth often lead the viewer to believe you find your health important, your appearance valuable and you look younger!

Frequently people who are ashamed of their teeth find it difficult to smile brightly in public. Watch a teenager who recently had braces placed on their teeth. Smiling may be difficult for a couple of days but their lack of enthusiasm about smiling and revealing the dental work goes on for months.

Free Teeth Whitening Trial

Tooth whitening products are more available over the counter and dentists are discovering more and more ways to whiten your teeth in the office. In fact, there are even home remedies that can be used to whiten and brighten your smile at home. Each tooth whitening procedure has it’s pros and cons. The reality is that you must decide which procedures work best with your lifestyle.

Tooth whitening procedures in the dental office have expanded from just chemical bleaching to bleaching using a laser light (Zoom!). Not every dentist is able to use all the procedures available. Nor do the dentists want to be able to offer all the different methods. If you chose to use a dentist you should know that you’ll need only one, possibly two, treatments. The dentist can fully evaluate your particular teeth to determine the best method to use on your stains, darkening or just aging teeth.

Tooth whitening procedures at home have a bit more variety. There are the trays, the strips and tooth whitening toothpaste. There are remedies that work in 3 days, 7 days, 2 weeks or over several months (toothpastes). In the case of tooth whitening products that are sold over the counter you’ll find they are all easy to use. Each requires that you wear the product for a specific amount of time and no longer. With the strips you are able to speak, with the trays you must not hold a conversation or they’ll slip.

There are also home remedies that use products you can find around the house. These remedies take longer than the standard 3-14 days of the over the counter products and definitely require more work and persistence than the one-shot dental office tooth whitening procedures.

Tooth whitening must be maintained. Although the process is usually good for six months to a year it isn’t permanent. You can increase the length of time between maintenance by not smoking, brushing after eating foods that stain such as berries, and using a toothpaste that whitens.

There is one discomfort that some users find with over the counter tooth whitening systems and that is gum irritation. The irritation can have a couple of different causes. By eliminating the cause you’ll decrease the irritation and discomfort. In some cases the trays aren’t fit specifically to your mouth. Some products have trays that can be boiled and molded to the mouth which will eliminate this cause. Another cause of gum irritation is because you brush your teeth before the process and cause a mild irritation prior to using the gel.

Some basic home tooth whitening methods include the application of a paste of lemon juice and salt or rubbing the inner white part of an orange peel in the discolored areas. Some use the paste of bicarbonate of soda with water or dried and powdered Bay leaves combined with orange peel. All of these remedies will give you excellent results when they are used consistently

The trouble with all of the tooth whitening methods are that they require time and patience. In this fast, rush-rush society several months of treatment to get what the dentist can give in one hour isn’t what people may seek out.

What ever process you chose be sure that it is one that fits your lifestyle and your beliefs. If you are having a difficult time wrapping your mind around using chemicals in your mouth with the dentist or at home you may be more inclined to use the home remedies, even though they will take longer.

Restorative dentists are cosmetic dentists because the products and appliances they produce and recommend help people to have better, whiter smiles after having lost teeth or having had problems with their facial structure.

Although dental bridges, made by restorative dentists, are often made for cosmetic reasons, they are also necessary for proper eating, and speaking. Dental bridge care is important to the future of the patient. Bridges are often costly and not always paid for by insurance companies. Because of this dental bridge care will protect the life of your investment.

A dental bridge is an option to repair or replace missing teeth without pulling others and using dentures. A bridge is a false tooth that is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill an area left by a missing tooth. The bridge will prevent damage to your gums and teeth and give you a new and improved smile.

When there is a space left in the mouth where a tooth once was the rest of the teeth can move gradually to fill the space. This change in position can change your bite, lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even severe migraine type headaches. Food can become lodged in the larger spaces between teeth encouraging more dental decay and the bone structure around the opening becomes unstable which can cause problems with the teeth on either side of the space.

One type of bridge is a fixed bridge that is attached to the teeth on either side of the false tooth. These teeth can’t be taken out of your mouth so dental bridge care for this type of bridge would be the same as care for the rest of your natural teeth. Another type of bridge is a cantilever bridge, which are used when there are teeth on only one side of the open space. These bridges can be removed and dental bridge care is necessary.

The third type of bridge is a traditional bridge, which also requires dental bridge care since it’s removable. This bridge is created using a crown for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.

Dental bridge care will extend the life of your investment. Bridges normally last between 5 and 15 years or even longer. With good oral hygiene and prophylaxis it’s not unusual for a bridge to last over 10 years. In a lot of ways dental bridge care is a lot like caring for dentures. Maintaining a regular schedule will help to prevent any gaps in a cleaning, which can lead to breaks, cracks, stains and poor positioning. Keep a regular cleaning schedule with your dentist as well for early diagnosis of any problems.

You should brush your teeth in the morning, in the evening and five minutes after finishing any meal or snack. Research has shown that bacteria begins to break down the enamel of your teeth within five minutes after your last bite of food. Because the dental bridge will hold food particles against the teeth it is necessary to floss and brush after all meals to decrease the risk of dental decay and gum disease.

Each evening get into the habit of removing the bridge, flossing all teeth, brushing all teeth and bridge and soaking it if your dentist recommends. Dental bridge care is necessary to protect your investment in the bridge and your dental health.
