Kids are among the most sophisticated observers of ads. They can sing the jingles and identify the logos, and they often have strong feelings about products. What they generally don’t understand, however, are the issues that underlie how advertising works. Mass media are used not only to sell goods but also ideas: how we should behave, what rules are important, who we should respect and what we should value.

Time is speeding by and it’s already Thanksgiving.  There is a chill in the air and I still don’t have a job.  The good news is that I’ve cleaned out my sock drawer.  And I found every birthday card my mother every gave me.  What do I do with these memories?  I used to take her to the Harvard club for Thanksgiving dinner.  It was our tradition.  We would get drunk on Cosmos sitting by the picture of Helen Keller.  The last two years were really rough.  She was angry, yelling in the dining room.  I was just pissed I had to do it.  But it really didn’t occur to me that time runs out…

So now I’m watching the  parade on TV and I’m gearing myself for visiting my mother, who is now living in her bed.

When things are crumbing, I guess we must be grateful for the pieces!  We are blessed to have this day.  I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving!

I’ve been giving some thought to the objections that have been raised by those who see anthropocentricity as an objection to creationism or even theism. The epistemological gap is fundamental and cannot be avoided. I can only see the universe through my perceptions and then rely on my perceptions of others to come to what really amounts to a perception-consensus about what truth is. Nobody in the RichardDawkins.net forum seems to account for the fact that even a unity of thought, as to what scientific observations/perception mean, does not warrant the conclusion that the issue of how the universe or Man came to be is resolved.

Name one scientific rule that is wholly infallible and which can never be changed. Does evolution theory get a special dispensation from its believers? Why not admit that evolution may very well be only a partial answer, a best answer, but certainly not the final answer? Until one ‘gets off the dime’ on the position of absolutism, there cannot be the possibility of argument. If either the the evolutionists or the creationists have the absolute final answer, there is nothing to talk about. If there are, among them, those who are willing to come off the absolutism platform, at least for purposes of argument, a discussion can be had.

As Denish D’Souza points out, for example, it may very well be that is has been accepted as a rule that light travels at 186,000 mph. However, no scientist knows whether that is true in all places in the universe or near wormholes or blackholes, assuming these exist. If there is a background noise, we don’t know what happens to light at the ‘edge of the universe.’ The law of physics as they apply to light, for example, are subject to revision. In several places in the God Delusion, and in Dawkins’ Darwin Lecture at Stanford, he does unequivocally claim that natural selection and evolution are the only plausible answer(s) for all that is — thereby allowing him to eliminate one more god from the list of others who have fallen at the hands of intellectualism and science. Nevertheless, he has not, and cannot, defeat the human conception that there is something higher than genetic destiny and that higher thing sits outside of our personal/human condition.

The response that I see to the anthropocentricity objection is essentially as follows:

I am the center of my perception as you are to yours. The further we look into the world the more we come to an understanding of the atomic universe and the principles that govern it. Incredibly, microbiology seems to be coming up with many of the same findings or observations that the astrophysicists are (i.e., as to the atomic structure of all that is and the rules that govern it).

Similarly, the further out we look into the universe, we revert to a principled view of the atomic universe. Under either analysis, we come back to the same place and remain the center of our universe. We are the center of our universe and we always come back to the same place — as we must. Can you separate yourself from your perceptions? What is it that you know about the universe that has not come through and by perception?

Just think about it — at any given time, you are at a center of Earth since it is a sphere. (unless there is a desire to get into a discussion about the earth’s magnetic fields and pole alignment). Indeed, you can begin measuring away from yourself in any direction and will reach the same infinitude in terms of space and time. Prove otherwise. Until the astrophysicists can measure from Earth to the ‘background noise’, the presumption seems to be in favor of treating the Universe as though it is infinite in any direction.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that we are so anthropocentric and limited by our human condition. My own anthropocentric perception is unique and cannot be the mere byproduct of a genetic destiny and yet be so vastly different from the perceptions of others. Again, animals seem to have a limited sense of self and the ability to change the self. Humans seem to be created by evolution, or otherwise, as something completely different as to function and purpose (or lack thereof).

We are each undeniably the center of the universe known for us. Separate yourself from your perception and you might have the opportunity to live the life of an animal. Our awareness of our own perception dictates our ability to strive for change in the self, environment, and a glimpse of something higher than ourselves. Our perception is the beginning of freewill. The question seems to be whether our ability to engage in freewill (moral behavior by ‘choice’) is the result of being created/evolved from something higher or different than the general animal kingdom. In any event, the anthropocentric position is equally applicable to evolutionists as well as the creationists. Self loathing by either side doesn’t seem to fix this fundamental problem.

Absolutism has absolutely no place in human existence where it has to be admitted that human perception, even in groups, is subject to revision.

“Our Place in the Cosmos”, the third video from the Symphony of Science, was crafted using samples from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, Richard Dawkins’ Genius of Charles Darwin series, Dawkins’ TED Talk, Stephen Hawking’s Universe series, Michio Kaku’s interview on Physics and aliens, plus added visuals from Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi, History Channel’s Universe series, and IMAX Cosmic Voyage. The themes present in this song are intended to explore our understanding of our origins within the universe, and to challenge the commonplace notion that humans have a superior or privleged position, both on our home planet and in the universe itself.

The Symphony of Science is a musical project by John Boswell “designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form.” Using Auto-Tune and clips from Carl Sagan’s PBS series, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, Boswell has created a captivating music video:

Det er lett å bli villedet på det økologiske markedet. Noen merker kaller seg for økologisk uten å være det. Noen er økologiske uten å skilte med det, og andre er semi-økologiske det vil si at de bruker noen økolgiske ingredienser, og andre ingredienser som ikke er det. Det er også en del serier som er naturlige, uten å være økologiske.

Huden vår er kroppens største organ, og 67% av det som smøres på huden taes opp av kroppen. Legg derfor vekt på at dusj-såper, body lotion og ansiktsprodukter er av den beste kvalitet. Uten mineral-oljer, men med kaldpressede økologiske oljer som tilfører kroppen næringstoffer istedet for å forurense den, skape hormonell ubalense og belastning på utrensningsorganene våre.

Det er en jungel der ute med forskjellige sertifiseringer, og jeg tenkte det kan være greit å orientere seg litt blandt de mest vanlige:

USDA organic

Er en matvare sertifisering i USA, det vil si at de bruker samme retningslinjer som økologisk mat. Innenfor USDA Organic er det tre grupper:

100 % Organic som har rett til å bruke stempelet “USDA”. Her er alt laget av økolgiske ingredienser.

95% Organic har også rett til å bruke stempelte “USDA”, men har en veldig kort liste over hvilke produkter som ikke er økologiske. De må fremdeles ikke inneholde noen syntetiske stoffer eller kjemisk fremkallede stoffer.

“Made With” organic ingredients, kan ikke bruke stempelet, og inneholder minst 70% økologiske stoffer. Det er her lov til å bruke noen godkjente syntetiske stoffer. 

 Produkter fra Juice Beauty og Erbaviva bærer en USDA sertifisering.

NSF er en sertifisering som brukes av Origins, Aveda, Aubrey Organics, som kun refererer til “made with” økologiske stoffer. Må inneholde 70% økologiske stoffer, og kan da bruke NSF stempelet.  En streng og høy standard for en ikke så streng “made with” kategori.

Ecosert er den vanligste sertifiseringen i Europa. For å få denne sertfifiseringen må kun 10% være økologisk, dette er faktisk høyere prosent andel enn det høres ut som, fordi det ekkluderer vann, men er fremdeles ikke så streng som USDA. Mange av de tillatte ingrediensene på den ikke-økologiske delen av produktene tillater petrokjemikalier og syntetiske stoffer.

Vår serie Patyka har en Ecosert sertifisering der en kan lese på produktene hvor stor andel som er økologisk, de fleste produktene har en 99% høy andel av økologiske ingredienser.

Soil Association (UK) er meget lik USDA sertifiseringen og dermed en av de som stiller strengest krav.

Serien vår The Organic Pharmacy er sertifisert av Soil Association.

Cosmos  er en ny Europeisk sertifisering der Ecosert, Cosmeobio, Soil Association, ICEA, BIDH, og bioforum har gått sammen for å lage en felles retningslinje for økologiske produkter. Det vil bli mulig å bruke denne sertifiseringen fra Jan 2010.

My first posting on a blog that has been thrown together to occupy the domain name that is…well…my name.

Months have come and gone, while I struggled to fine a purpose for this insignificant string of 1’s and 0’s in the vast cyber-universe.  Should I go the popular route, and compose and electronic record of what amounts to complete nonsense for the consumption of few who would contain even fewer that gave a shit?  How about the quasi-intellectual blogger, who found a convenient forum to cast sweeping judgments of complex issues with the wave of a keyboard.  Ever so naive to the reality of life and the dangers of taking a hard line stance on any partisan issue.  Of course, I cannot forget the “revenue generation” of internet kids, who’s unique idea has given them the gumption to pursue this concept on a monetary level.  I wish I could gently nudge them back a decade, the fat lady has already left the stage.

The internet somewhat resembles the travels of Columbus, who of course provides me an excuse to flee from work, but who also demonstrated the amazing power of persuasion.  He discovered a land that, although distant, had been inhabited by a population of people for many years.  For shame America!  We must only revere those leaders who blind us through religion and passion, because reason has no place in the reactions of a nation as great as ours.  The Bush’s, Cheney’s, Rove’s, and to a lesser extent, the Clinton’s.  They peddle religion as the novel cause for our indignant attitude against the remaining world population.

This most definitely will read as some sort of liberal, left-wing rant.  Trust me when I promise, it is not the conservative movement that is the impetus, it is the lack of logic and the indoctrination of religious solvency that is most upsetting.  Unfortunately, there is a significant number of Americans who take Glenn Beck seriously.

In the end, I see a few simple truths that are grounded, oddly enough, by a novel published in 1949 by George Orwell.  1984 was the name of the book, and given that this is 2009 it is somewhat humorous that we are far beyond what used to be a distant future fiction.  I’m not purporting that Big Brother is real, but moreover the imminent reality that our technology has a significant potential for misuse.  The main, relevant news networks are no longer “fair & biased” but driven by financial and dramatic goals.  I often wonder when I watch CNN (Fox News is far too mired in its own sickness to endure) whether or not I am learning and judging the issues in our world through a pre-applied corporate filter.  Should I seek truth in the internet?  I say yes, sometimes…

The internet is the single most revolutionary technology to ever be adopted by the human species.  It has literally transformed every aspect of life, and has provided immediate and unfiltered access to opinions that are borderline toxic.  I am amazing and inspired by the internet, but soon I am reminded of the duality of any great human discovery.  It is subject to exploitation not only to the benefit of our species, but to its destruction.

Let’s give Albert Einstein a shout out right now.  The greatest beauty of his work was E=MC^2.  This equation revealed the relationship between the mass of any substance, the speed of light squared, and the insane amount of energy that could be harvested.  Unfortunately, it gave birth to the atomic bomb, with a side of nuclear power.  If nations did not use plutonium for defense, the carbon emissions of our energy sources would be drastically reduced.  The power of that simple equation is truly frightening, because we as humans are capable of so many things, and also of such evil.

If anyone reads this, no matter what your opinion may be of my ramblings, please do me one favor.  Take the time to learn about Carl Sagan, and his Cosmos series that was aired in 1980.  It is the most comprehensive account of spirituality without organized religion – our small yet significant place in the universe – centered around a cosmos that has more mystery, magic, and wonder than any man-made God could provide.  I am a scientist, and a wanna-be cosmologist, so these concepts are like instinct to me.  Others may not find it simple, and will struggle with the immense size and severity of the concepts.  Do not leave it at that…take some time to realize that you, like all else, is capable of understanding this unique puzzle.

I will end with my favorite Carl Sagan demonstration:

Assume that we are looking at one calendar year.  January 1st at 12:00AM is the beginning of our universe – the Big Bang – which was billions of years ago.  Now think of this moment where you are reading the words I have posted…this moment is December 31st at midnight.  The known, verified existence of human beings in any form has been determined from fossil records, and represents the last 11 seconds of December 31st.  Our entire existence, all of our evolution, is 11 seconds of an entire year.  I find that it is not frightening, but rather awe-inspiring.  We’ve come so far in such a short span of time, and it is entirely within our powers to survive our technological adolescence.

We are not alone.  Somewhere in the universe, there is something just like you, hearing something stated by something just like me.  Both of us are wondering who else is out there, but the chances we will meet are a mathematical impossibility.  Given the scope of the cosmos, how can someone not be in awe of the beautiful, rare existence that we have made for ourselves.
