<p>An insightful man once said &#8216;Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, the trouble is I don&#8217;t know which half&#8217;.  That man was John Wanamaker, an american merchant who died in 1922.  Almost a hundred years has passed and yet that very same statement rings true for a lot of advertising today.</p>
<p>What Mr Wanamaker would&#8217;ve been impressed with is the ability to see exactly what feedback and results his advertising was achieving; which is entirely possible even in realtime thanks to the advent of online advertising.</p>
<p>Pay-per-click (PPC), cost per impressions and affiliate marketing are all growing trends within advertising where you pay for results not just to place an advert like you would in the Lincolnshire Echo or Bailgate Independent.</p>
<p>Pay per click advertising is the process of being charged for your advert every time someone acts upon it.  The simplest form of PPC is having a description with a link to your advert and then paying a set amount each and every time someone clicks on your link and views your website.  Why this is such a fantastic form of advertising is quite obvious, you&#8217;re only paying for the advert when someone is interested enough to click the link and find out more.</p>
<p>Cost per impressions or CPM as it is often known is the model of paying for your advert based on how many people will view it in its location. So if you place your advert on a website with high amounts of traffic you will get lots of views or impressions and that will therefore cost you more than if it was in a location with less traffic.  The benefit to this is that there is still a certain amount of strategy to paying for the advertising space.  You might put a poster up in a coffee shop but you can&#8217;t measure how many people have looked at it, but put an advert in a prominent position on that coffee shops website and you will at least know how many people have looked at that page and paid accordingly.</p>
<p>Also mentioned was affiliate marketing, this takes advertising to the next step and is the equivalent of hiring commission only sales people for your company.  Affiliate marketing is a model based on only paying for an advert when it leads to a sale of a product.  The amount usually being a percentage of the sales price of the product bought.  The concept here is great in that your advertising costs you nothing until you&#8217;ve made a sale, the downside is that you may be giving away far more of your profit margin than you would with more conventional marketing.</p>
<p>So if you think your advertising options are limited to handing out flyers on Lincoln&#8217;s high street or taking a half page in the Linconshire Echo then it would be well worth talking to us about looking at some new and innovative advertising strategies.</p>

It’s a common view that the effectiveness of a purchased e-mail data file is worse than a carefully crafted in-house list based on input from the sales team plus opt-in requests from customers.</p>
<p>Part of the reason is that there’s less likelihood for recipients to be interested in the products and services of the company, which only makes intuitive sense.  But there may be other, more nefarious reasons at work as well.</p>
<p>Ever heard of a click-o-meter?  It’s the way some e-mail lists are made to look more effective than they actually are.  In its basic form, this is nothing more than people paid to open e-mails with no other interest or intention of further engagement.  The more technical way is to have an automated click setting, usually done through a rotation of IP addresses.</p>
<p>To the casual observer, this gives the impression of recipients who are interested in a company’s offer, but the final analysis will show something quite different:  near-zero purchases or other relevant actions.  The problem is that for many campaigns, ROI will be slow at first, so the grim reality that the company has been punked comes later.</p>
<p>The growth of the autobot click-o-meter phenomenon tracks with the growing interest in purchasing third-party lists based on cost-per-click (CPC) performance rather than on the traditional cost-per-thousand (CPM) basis.  Not surprisingly, when list vendors started being asked to sell lists based on a <a href="http://www.buyers-web.com/understanding-cpm-vs-cpc/">CPC versus CPM basis</a>, for some of them the temptation to “juice the numbers” was too great.  And since many of the databases come from other sources and are private-labeled, the problem is perpetrated throughout the system.</p>
<p>Many purchasers have wised up to this issue by settling on one or two list brokers that they know and trust, by asking about the data source, and by asking for client references for the lists in question.  If an e-mail database has suddenly changed in pricing from a CPM to a CPC basis, that may be another cause for concern.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After my <a href="http://theblogbyjavier.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/impact-of-an-adwords-campaign/" target="_blank">previous post</a> was published, I had a conversation about it and received some comments. These made me think that it could be interesting to comment on the other 2 campaigns to gain more insight about how AdWords works and how useful it can or cannot be. First, let me share some data of the 3 campaigns:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://alandalus.freetoasthost.info/" target="_blank"><strong>Al Andalus club</strong></a> (Rota, Cadiz): had a cost of 29.68€ for 250 clicks, thus 0.12€ per click (CPC). It appeared in the screens 208,520 times. It used 72 words or combination of words, restricted to a circular area about 90km around Rota.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.standingovationmadrid.com/" target="_blank">Standing Ovation club</a> </strong>(Madrid): had a cost of 16.56€ for 59 clicks, thus 0.28€ per click (CPC). It appeared in the screens 166,291 times. It used 49 words or combination of words and was restricted to Madrid region.</li>
<li><strong>Blog</strong>: had a cost of 51.96€ for 1,410 clicks, thus 0.04€ per click (CPC). It appeared in the screens 3,685,521 times. It used 41 words or combination of words and was not geographically restricted.</li>
</ul>
<p>Even though I am not an expert in AdWords, from what I have experienced and as you can see above:</p>
<ul>
<li>The more clicks it has the lower the price per click will be.</li>
<li>You may set a maximum amount of money you want to spend per day (I normally didn’t spend more than 1.5€ euro per day per campaign), this means that once that amount is reached your campaign is de-activated until the next day (ads won’t appear for some hours).</li>
<li>Using more words does not necessarily translate into more clicks. You need to find <strong>adequate words</strong>, related to the website, so it appears and appears high enough in the web. Also, some words are more expensive than others, though the price varies with the number of clicks.</li>
<li>The <strong>ads </strong>themselves need to be <strong>attractive</strong>, as it may appear many times but still needs to make people click on it. In that sense, the most successful one was that of Al Andalus (people clicked on it 0.12% of the times it appeared; 3 times more effective than the other 2 campaigns).</li>
<li>You need to focus the campaign in the <strong>segment you want to target</strong>. E.g., I first centered the area for Al Andalus campaign, until I found out that some clicks (consuming campaign money) came from Tanger and other Moroccan cities… I had to move the target area, as no one from Morocco would go to the club on a weekly basis.</li>
</ul>
<p>I didn’t measure any kind of <em>conversion rate</em> as I am not selling anything through my blog nor could I check how many guests went to Al Andalus or Standing Ovation meetings thanks to ads (I was not attending those clubs); and that would be an extremely interesting indicator for any business.</p>
<p>Finally, my friend got the 75€ from a special offer from Google. In the Iberia in-flight magazine (“Ronda”), I have also seen some months ago codes for 50€ to be used in AdWords campaigns. So, be aware of possible next opportunities and give it a try (and you can always spend some little money as a learning experience &#8211; everything is very well explained inside AdWords tool).</p>
