Where?

This particular branch is in Crouch End, hilariously next to Starbucks. Take THAT massive corporation..oh..wait..

Why?

The flusterings around the Tesco association had made me curious, and more importantly, the sandwiches looked good through the window.

The experience:

Crouch End is a lovely bit of North London that I am loath to share with too many people, lest they all go there and ruin it. Fortunately I won’t have any much trouble whilst writing here. Especially considering Harris and Hoole are popping up like an uncomfortable rash, spreading past the nether regions of the City to the inner thigh of the Home Counties. You can find them if you’re in Barnet, just as easily as in Walton-On-Thames, Crowborough or on Tooley Street. Which is a shame, really, because it all just feels a bit…eggy.

The sandwich was great. I went with the toasted goats cheese and rocket sandwich, which comes with complimentary fruit/crisps and a glass of water as standard. They even come around the tables and top up water from a jug. Lovely! Brought straight to my seat, and only a minute or so after I had sat down. Class act.

Coffee, however, was another story. As in some horrible flashback to the early noughties, they give you a flashing, vibrating, horrendous notification machine and tell you to come back when it explodes in your face. Surely there is no need to transport customers back to TGI Fridays. The tension is palpable; a room full of people staring at little black boxes, waiting for them to go off. Mine climaxed after about ten minutes. I retrieved my coffee and discovered it was only slightly more palatable than that rack of ribs at TGIs in 2004 when I wasn’t even invited. My cappuccino had a lovely foam cap, but was otherwise a bit cold and a bit bitter. Disappointing for Union beans.

Harris and Hoole have been open about their bizarre association with the third largest retailer in the world, but there’s still something icky about the whole thing. It’s in the peculiarly vague wording of their website, the discreet “local differences” between franchises, and the too-easy-to-access Wifi.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with these cafés. But, if you’re going to spurn the independent high street choice, you might as well go to Costa and avoid Pavlov’s bell. Woof.

safe to say… I had a great day as always with these precious friends of mine!

Comment joindre l’utile à l’agréable ? Je viens de rentrer d’une croisière convention organisée par le réseau Immobilier Era pour célébrer ses 20 ans. Avec 650 congressistes, nous embarquons au port de Savone en Italie (2h30 de route de Nice) pour une min-croisière de 4 jours- 3 nuits. Escales prévues : Barcelone et Ibiza, puis accostage à Marseille. Et surtout des séances de travail dans une unité de lieu.

Un exemple de l’architecture de Gaudi à Barcelone

Depuis le naufrage du Costa Concordia, je l’avoue, je n’étais guère tentée de monter à bord de ces monstres des mers. Dans l’ensemble, je suis agréablement surprise par ces mini-croisières. Mais commençons d’abord par les critiques pour terminer sur les points forts.

Avec ses 211 mètres de long et ses 11 ponts, il faut savoir se repérer rapidement sur le Costa Mediterranea pour retrouver sa cabine parmi le bon millier de cabines.

Les moins

- Si l’on n’a pas la chance d’avoir une cabine située près d’un accès (escalier et/ou ascenseur), il faut beaucoup marcher.

- Bien qu’il y ait plusieurs restaurants, le service du déjeuner au self-service me rappelle les longues files du restaurant universitaire !

- La décoration a de quoi choquer notre goût latin, mais peut plaire aux amateurs des casinos de Las Vegas !

Les plus

Dans les bons points, je vous signale :

-  Les spacieuses cabines équipées d’un balcon privé. Un espace calme pour apprécier le coucher de soleil.

-   Compte tenu de nombre de passagers – environ 2.000 personnes- le service de restauration comme la cuisine sont très corrects.

-    Les rares endroits dédiés à la réflexion, comme par exemple la bibliothèque décorée d’une collection de verres anciens de Murano.

-    La possibilité de faire un footing sur le pont… si vous avez bien sûr vos baskets.

Mes conseils

Dans une croisière, le choix du bateau est aussi important que celui de l’itinéraire. N’hésitez pas à vous renseigner sur sa capacité.

Choisir une cabine proche du pont principal. Sur le Costa Mediterranea, il se situe au 2° pont. En réservant une cabine au 3° ou 4° pont, vous pouvez éviter les queues dans les ascenseurs en prenant les escaliers pour vous déplacer.

Pour diner dans une ambiance plus cosy, préférez le second service au premier, au restaurant ;

Excursions ou non ? si vous connaissez déjà la ville, profitez de l’escale pour l’arpenter en solo. Dans les autres cas, l’excursion constitue la solution plus judicieuse pour découvrir le maximum de choses en peu de temps ;

Pensez aux inter-saisons, moins chargées et moins chères qu’en été… comme les vacances à terre !
