Courchevel, a French Alps haven for skiers, isn’t typically associated with the contemporary art world. However, the ski area has recently captivated the art scene and made international headlines. On December 5th, Courchevel took an innovative approach in exhibiting 14 sculptures by Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. 

Utilizing its reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious winter-resort destinations, Courchevel displayed an open air museum. The Stratton Foundation, the Dali Universe and Bartoux Galleries presented the exhibition which included seven monumental sculptures placed in the heart of Courchevel, and two of the artist’s masterpieces that can admired from the ski run (one of which is positioned at the top of Vizelle, 2,659 meters (8,723.8 feet) above sea-level).

Courchevel is famous for the uniqueness of its terrain, wonderful, colorful features of the local topography and climate, wonderful nature of Gdańsk flora, and of course, stunning landscapes and rare variegated Courchevel, unique, beautiful nature, steep, serpentine mountain roads, the noise of the crystal-clear and transparent mining rivers and stunning waterfalls, the quiet water of mountain lakes.

“If you went to Kurshavele you are the star” – so the French say. Courchevel – an ideal resort for skiers who want to combine tradition, comfort and luxury. Haute restaurants (some of them – the best in the Alps) and first-class hotel, along with beautiful well-groomed pistes, Courchevel fame throughout the world.

It’s been 20 years since Salvador Dali died, and what better way to celebrate his life, death, and vision than by planting his sculptures in the snow?
Two weeks ago, the Dali Universe and Stratton museum installed 14 pieces of his monumental sculpture in the classy ski town of Courchevel, France. Though most of them are in the town itself, two, Woman Aflame and Alice in Wonderland, will be plopped on top of the slopes themselves for maximum (if you’ll excuse the expression) exposure. It has been a long time since I had lunch at Le Chalet de Pierres, but it is impossible to forget it. The food was amazing and it was the first time I witnessed such finesse and lounging at a ski resort during lunch time. Overlooking Des Verdon slope in Courchevel 1850, Le Chalet de Pierres is famous for its crepes and extensive dessert buffet displayed on the terrace on sunny days.

The French (and the Swiss), like any other meal, occasion and setting, know how to take eating to a different level. My ski trips in America have helped me prove this hypothesis. The self-serve quick meals in American ski resorts (including Aspen) become carefully crafted occasions with waiter service on the mountain tops of France and Switzerland.

The job application, interview and offer was over in the blink of an eye which meant I was left with just a few weeks to cross items off a lengthy ‘to do’ list.  As I write this post, I am just nine days away from departing for the Alps.

As quickly as I ticked items off from the list below, new ones appeared to take their place. 

1. Complete the necessary administration with my new employer.  This included things such as a CRB check, photos for the season long ski pass, payment of an extortionate bond, copies of my passport and driving licence, a blood sample, a retina scan, finger prints and a DNA test.
2. Arrange adequate travel insurance for myself and my belongings.
3. Spend some time getting frustrated with iTunes in order to put some new music on my iPod.  Even though I know that despite having 25,000 songs in my pocket I will still dislike 95% of the music on there.
4. Purchase a substantial stock of socks and pants.
5. Book flight tickets and arrange a transfer from Geneva airport to the resort.
6. Save some money.
7. Buy a male blow up doll.
8. Film a few scenes for a friend’s film project.  I don’t think I will be getting a BAFTA for my role as a hip hop loving Welsh vicar performing an exorcism.
9. Finish a list of DIY jobs around the house.  This involved buying a length of drainpipe and what I think was a bag of ready mixed cement.
10. Sell as much old shite on Ebay as possible.
11. Buy a car to run around in for a month.
12. Sell the car.
13. Write a packing list.
14. Spend money that I don’t have on ‘essential’ items such as more hoodies, goggles, sunglasses, snowboard boots etc.
15. Attend an engagement party.
16. Spend a Sunday morning at a christening whilst trying to convince God, or whoever does Christenings these days (I imagine he is quite busy on a Sunday), that I can change and I am actually a suitable choice for a godparent.
17. Learn to like cheese as I fear my phobia may somewhat limit my enjoyment of French cuisine.
18. Work as much as possible in order to pay for après ski and more ‘essential’ snowboard accessories.
19. Find a new lift to an airport 120 miles away from home, to catch a 07:00 flight as a result of the predictable split from girlfriend.
20. Go on a luxury two week holiday to Barbados.

With all of the main items now in order, I am left with just my bag to pack.  Due to the overwhelming excitement of going to live somewhere new, meeting new people, starting a new job and having the opportunity to go snowboarding every day, I anticipate many sleepless nights until I fly out to join the other like minded individuals in Courchevel.

The only thing that prevents me from being smug about how prepared I am is the fact that I have not yet even contemplated packing my rucksack.  I hope to pack with plenty of time to spare but then I also always planned to complete my homework with plenty of time to spare, or pay my bills before the letters start to get written in red ink and with a more threatening tone to them.  I don’t know what makes me think packing my bag will be any different.

Or maybe it is all about the piste, powder, pipe, park, and partying?

On a tous une écharpe dans sa penderie.  A partir de ce postulat, comment s’extirper de ce panurgisme élémentaire ?

L’idée de génie de cette saison nous vient de la maison dont les écharpes nous rendent folles, la britannique Burberry. Christopher Bailey propose cet automne le Snood. Quésaco ? La révolution est simplicime, le Snood est une écharpe tubulaire à enfiler pour faire barrière aux souffles glacés. Un moyen agréable et efficace de se démarquer élégamment de ses congénères, car le Snood reprend bien sûr le célèbre tartan en cachemire de la maison. Pour ceux qui veulent faire encore mieux sur les pistes de Courchevel, la ligne Prorsum offre une version en vison doublé cachemire.

 On sent déjà l’engouement pour le produit puisque, mesdames et messieurs (le Snood est mixte, en effet), on est presque sur liste d’attente pour l’obtenir, même sur le parisien boulevard Malesherbes.

Il semblerait bien qu’on ai trouvé la nouvelle pièce exclusive de cet automne…

"Top of the run" Courchevel April 08. Watercolour 8"x14"

There are unfinished paintings that silently reproach you from the shelf where you know they are hiding. This is one such painting. Painting in the Alps is diametrically opposite to that other “A”, Afghanistan. One is cold and wet; the other hot and dry. So while in Afghanistan watercolour dries almost instantly on the paper, in the Alps you might freeze to death waiting for a wash to dry. So a different approach is needed. In a nutshell it is…use as little water as possible. In snow of course the paper is helping you  – you don’t have to paint anything (well, roughly speaking), and if the sky is cold and grey and trying to snow, you don’t have to paint the sky either. So this is very much the minimalist approach.

It was enought trouble carrying my gear with me, and I was really there to snowboard. However, this view had to be grabbed. People coming off the lift, and shuffling off on the shallow slope towards the beginning of the run was a stoty I wanted to tell. The fact that the skiers were disappearing over a slight ridge, and you can’t see them skiing, added to the sense of expectation.

I got as far as placing the figures in colour, painting the gearing shed on the left, touching in the snow shadows in the foreground, and a plain grey wash over the background ridge.  And that is how it sat until last night. So I put in the rocks in the background (which I had noted in pencil at the time), strengthened one or two of the figures, and finally - carefully – spattered some “snow” using a large brush loaded with fairly thick permanent white.

I had in the back of my mind the snow paintings of Sir William Russell Flint, an example shown here painted in 1927. He was fantastic at putting such life into skiers before the days when artists used cameras. He must have had a fantastic visual memory – or be able to afford models to pose in the right positions. I wonder if anyone knows.

            Dimanche 18 octobre 2009, la semaine se termine. Un repos dominical permet de réguler la fatigue hebdomadaire  résultat de l’association entre cours/stage/entrainement. Mercredi dernier à 13h30 chaque étudiant kiné de 2^ème année émargeait avant de prendre place dans l’amphithéâtre 3bis de l’université de Médecine de Grange-Blanche. Au programme : deux partiels. Durée totale de l’épreuve : 2heures. A la fin du temps imparti l’impression du moment fut : je ne vais pas majorer mais cela devrait me donner le minimum syndical (10/20). Prochaine échéance universitaire : les partiels de janvier.  Autre bonne nouvelle de la semaine j’ai reçu une invitation concernant la semaine du sport  olympique à Courchevel. Je ne suis par sur de participer à l’ensemble de la semaine mais vu la taille de l’évènement je pense néanmoins rester 3 jours complets. C’est le Comité National Olympique Sportif Français (CNOSF) qui organise depuis 12 ans cette semaine. Elle a pour but de récompenser tout les sportifs français médaillés sur un championnat du monde/ d’Europe. Elle permet à toute la délégation française de se regrouper au moins une fois par an. Je trouve cet évènement à la fois génial et indispensable car il évite que tous les sportifs ne se croisent qu’une fois tous les quatre ans à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques.

            Hier soir mes colocataires et moi sommes allés au Café Théâtre Le Nombril du monde  pour y voir une pièce intitulée « Rien à voir avec le titre ». L’humour, les jeux de mots, les parodies, le talent et l’énergie déployés par un trio d’acteur a rendu la soirée plus qu’animée. La petitesse de la salle de spectacle a rendu l’évènement encore plus convivial : la participation du public aidée par nos trois héros permis d’avaler deux heures de représentation sans indigestion. Leur prestation fut excellente ; je suggère aux lyonnais de consulter leur site internet.

            Mon stage kiné à Morancé suit son cours, il ne me reste plus que deux semaines avant de quitter le Beaujolais et d’entamer un nouveau stage sur Lyon.

Un paio di sci calzati sotto il sole d’agosto, un trampolino in erba e tutte le emozioni di una dura competizione internazionale. Per il terzo anno consecutivo, Pragelato sarà la cornice del Fis Summer Grand Prix, gara del circuito estivo di coppa del mondo di salto. Oggi e domani, la località della Via Lattea ospiterà circa 80 atleti di 19 nazionalità diverse, che con i loro voli acrobatici scateneranno l’entusiasmo e lo stupore del pubblico, atteso numeroso. Il trampolino di gara è quello realizzato per le Olimpiadi del 2006, un gioiello tecnologico progettato in maniera tale da permettere un doppio utilizzo: d’inverno, quando è ricoperto di neve, e d’estate, quando viene rivestito di erba sintetica. Le canaline su cui gli atleti prenderanno velocità per la rincorsa sono fatte di ceramica, bagnata con acqua prima di ogni performance in modo da eliminare al minimo l’attrito degli sci e garantire salti emozionanti come quelli sulla neve. Stasera alle 19 le prime prove, mentre alle 21 inizieranno le qualificazioni. Domani alle 15 ancora prove, poi dalle 16.15 la gara e a seguire la finale. L’ingresso è gratuito. Le qualifiche e le gare saranno inoltre seguite in diretta da Eurosport.

Al Summer Gran Prix non mancherà la nazionale italiana, reduce dalla prima tappa di domenica scorsa a Hinterzarten (Germania), dove il risultato migliore degli uomini guidati da Ivo Pertile è stato il ventesimo posto di Sebastian Colloredo. L’obiettivo dichiarato per gli azzurri è comunque quello di far maturare esperienza a un gruppo relativamente giovane, composto da Andrea Morassi, Diego e Roberto Dellasega e dallo stesso Colloredo. Morassi e Roberto Dellasega sono in ritardo di preparazione (andata a rilento perché i due sciatori hanno dovuto affrontare gli esami per la maturità scolastica), mentre Colloredo è dato in grande spolvero. Tutti e quattro gli atleti gareggeranno nelle competizioni individuali e a squadre, mentre nelle tappe successive troveranno spazio solo i migliori due delle prime gare. Un altro componente del team, Alessio De Crignis, non sarà della sfida, per via di una frattura al polso. Ad accompagnare la squadra ci saranno i tecnici Roberto Cecon, Federico Rigoni e Jakub Jiroutek.

La gara del Summer Grand Prix di Pragelato vale inoltre per il «4 Nations tournament», un torneo interno a quello della coppa del mondo, i cui appuntamenti successivi saranno Courchevel (Francia) il 14 agosto, Einsiedeln (Svizzera) il 16, Zakopane (Polonia) il 22, Hakuba (Giappone) il 29 e Klingenthal (Germania) il 3 ottobre.
