LESSON SIXTY-SIX

My happiness and my function are one.

Could anything but happiness result from Be-ing what You really are, and pain from denying It?  If You scrub a dirty floor with Your favorite white blouse, will the result make You happy? Likewise would You wear a washcloth on a dinner date in place of the blouse?

Just so, denial and refusal of Your function can only make You very miserable, although You try hard to hide it with distractions.

Your Function is to live Love that stands behind forgiveness and makes it viable.

To live Your Function is pure Joy and brings Your Be-ing into harmony with All of the Universe.

It’s quite simple and relaxing to Be What You really are. Why not try it out?  What could You lose from giving it a try?

¹ You have surely noticed an emphasis throughout our recent lessons on the connection between fulfilling your function and achieving happiness. This is because you do not really see the connection. Yet there is more than just a connection between them; they are the same. Their forms are different, but their content is completely one.

Could One Love universally and not be happy?  That would be impossible.  The more the Love, the more the happiness.

Love is not something that You look to get, but what You look to give.  And in giving are You receiving.  How is that?  It’s very simple.  God is the Source of Love.  It flows to You naturally; yet You don’t notice It until You wish to gift Your Brother with It.  Then do You realize that It always has been present here as You.

² The ego does constant battle with the Holy Spirit on the fundamental question of what your function is. So does it do constant battle with the Holy Spirit about what your happiness is. It is not a two-way battle. The ego attacks and the Holy Spirit does not respond. He knows what your function is. He knows that it is your happiness.

Will You accept it?  When You give Love quite freely, Love wells up in You, like a never-ending fountain, spilling out, running over, and blessing Every One You meet.

³ Today we will try to go past this wholly meaningless battle and arrive at the truth about your function. We will not engage in ceaseless arguments about what it is. We will not become hopelessly involved in defining happiness and determining the means for achieving it. – Every One of You knows whether You are truly happy or whether You aren’t. This happiness is quite apart from One’s own human story.  There is a quiet peacefulness to it, a feeling of grateful contentment due to nothing in particular at all.  It makes no sense to the ego, for it’s natural to You. – We will not indulge the ego by listening to its attacks on truth. We will merely be glad that we can find out what truth is. 

This peaceful feeling is so natural to You, and easy to accept for it fits You perfectly.

⁴ Our longer practice period today has as its purpose your acceptance of the fact that not only is there a very real connection between the function God gave you and your happiness, but that they are actually identical. God gives you only happiness. Therefore the function He gave you must be happiness, even if it appears to be different. Today’s exercises are an attempt to go beyond these differences in appearance, and recognize a common content where it exists in truth.

God is the only Giver of Your Good.  Yet the ego does claim otherwise, insisting that You listen to it instead of God, Who it has shoved way up in the sky and unavailable, or so it tells You.  Don’t listen.

The ego is the first lie, and the father of all lying.  God is simply good.

⁵ Begin the ten- to 15-minute practice period by reviewing these thoughts:

⁶ God gives me only happiness.
He has given my function to me.
Therefore my function must be happiness.

⁷ Try to see the logic in this sequence, even if you do not yet accept the conclusion. It is only if the first two thoughts are wrong that the conclusion could be false. Let us, then, think about the premises for a while, as we are practicing.

⁸ The first premise is that God gives you only happiness. This could be false, of course, but in order to be false it is necessary to define God as something He is not. – The very thought that God could be aught but Love has one source: what else but the ego. It has a very vested interest in You fearing God.  For its survival does depend upon it. – Love cannot give evil, and what is not happiness is evil.  – In Truth, it is the ego mind that is incapable of giving happiness. God is but Love, and Love is happiness. – God cannot give what He does not have, and He cannot have what He is not. Unless God gives you only happiness, He must be evil.  – Again, the ego has created a great atmosphere of fear concerning God. “Vengeance is Mine” proclaims the Bible, attributing this statement to God, when it does belong squarely to the ego.  It is this thinking that this Course aims to fix.  – And it is this definition of Him which you are believing if you do not accept the first premise.

This is very clear and very simple.

⁹ The second premise is that God has given you your function. We have seen that there are only two parts of your mind. One is ruled by the ego and is made up of illusions. The other is the home of the Holy Spirit, where truth abides. There are no other guides but these to choose between and no other outcomes possible as a result of your choice but the fear which the ego always engenders and the love which the Holy Spirit always offers to replace it.

You would think that the choice would be quite easy and quite simple.  And yet it isn’t.  For like foolish children You’ve followed the pied piper called the ego for so many eons that its teaching is as close to You as breathing.

Yet You do remain the Son of God, and You can shift as naturally to Reality as breathing.  I’ve stayed with the dream to help You do it.

¹⁰ Thus it must be that your function is established by God through His Voice or is made by the ego which you have made to replace Him. Which is true? Unless God gave your function to you, it must be the gift of the ego. Does the ego really have gifts to give, being itself an illusion and offering only the illusion of gifts?

And since it is diametrically opposed to God in every way, how good for You could its gifts be?

¹¹ Think about this during the longer practice period today. Think also about the many forms which the illusion of your function has taken in your mind and the many ways in which you try to find salvation under the ego’s guidance. Did you find it? Were you happy? Did they bring you peace?

The ego’s idea of salvation is but dying to ensure that You will stay within the dream, rather than choosing to Awaken.  Which sounds better to You: endless rounds of painful dreaming or the freedom of Awaking to the Love of God.

¹² We need great honesty today. Remember the outcomes fairly, and consider also whether it was ever reasonable to expect happiness from anything the ego has ever proposed. Yet the ego is the only alternative to the Holy Spirit’s Voice. You will listen to madness or hear the truth. Try to make this choice as you think about the premises on which our conclusion rests. We can share in this conclusion, but in no other. For God Himself shares it with us.

¹³ Today’s idea is another giant stride in the perception of the same as the same and the different as different. On one side stand all illusions. All truth stands on the other. Let us try today to realize that only the truth is true.

As long as You dream, the choice exists: Truth versus illusion.  Truth is happiness.  Illusion isn’t (isn’t happiness and just plain isn’t) .

¹⁴ In the shorter practice periods, which would be most helpful today if undertaken twice an hour, this form of the application is suggested:

¹⁵ My happiness and function are one
because God has given me both.

Remember that God has not given You both happiness and sorrow.  The Gifts of Love are only Good.

¹⁶ It will not take more than a minute, and probably less, to repeat these words slowly and think about them a little as you say them.

And they are Gifts unspeakable, quite on beyond gratitude.

It is a privilege to be asked to Love for it shows You must be willing, as well as able.

My only function is the one God gave me.

You wonder why I keep harping on this.  And yet You know it is because Dreamers have so many other intentions for Your time, for Your thought.  All those lists You make: Things to do today.  Things to do tomorrow.  New Year’s resolutions.  Gotta lose some weight – or gain some – so important to look good.  Schemes to make some money, vacations to plan.  And what movie should We go to see this evening?

And the decades of the dream fly by, and You decide to die.  Not once have You touched upon Your Function, nor worked seriously on Salvation.

Yet the only useful thing about the dream is that You can Awaken in it.

¹ The idea for today reaffirms your commitment to salvation. It also reminds you that you have no function other than this. Both of these thoughts are obviously necessary for a total commitment. Salvation cannot be the only purpose you hold while you still cherish others. The full acceptance of salvation as your only function necessarily entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself. This is the only way in which you can take your rightful place among the saviors of the world. This is the only way in which you can say and mean, “My only function is the one God gave me.” This is the only way in which you can find peace of mind.

Does this seem strict and stringent to You, removing all the fun from life?  Then You have no idea yet of the wonder that Life truly is.  Would a loving Father ask You to give up the things You cherish for no more than coal and ashes?  You know He wouldn’t.

If You are being asked to focus on Loving Your Brother, enough to forgive Him, entailed by Your Function, then this must be the way to Joy.

² Today and for a number of days to follow, set aside ten to 15 minutes for a more sustained practice period in which you try to understand and accept what today’s idea really means. – For You will be blessed as much as – if not more than – Your Brother. – It offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began.

Always looking for the one thing or person that will make everything okay, and never finding it or Him.  Always You have come here for getting, instead of for giving.

Your Function does give You the blessed opportunity to give, and keep on giving.

³ Try, if possible, to undertake the daily extended practice periods at approximately the same time each day. Try, also, to determine this time today in advance and then adhere to it as closely as possible.

This form does give focus and self-discipline to Your practice.

⁴ The purpose of this is to arrange your day so that you have set apart the time for God, as well as for all the trivial purposes and goals you will pursue. This is part of the long range disciplinary training which your mind needs, so that the Holy Spirit can use it consistently for the purpose He shares with you.

⁵ For this longer practice period, begin by reviewing the idea for today. Then close your eyes, repeat the idea to yourself once again, and watch your mind carefully to catch whatever thoughts cross it.

⁶ At first, make no attempt to concentrate only on thoughts related to the idea for today. Rather, try to uncover each thought that arises to interfere with it. Note each one as it comes to you with as little involvement or concern as possible, dismissing each one by telling yourself:

⁷ This thought reflects a goal that is preventing me
from accepting my only function.

The purpose of these ideas is to hone Your focus, for the ego mindset jumps mindlessly from thought to thought.

This self-discipline will teach You what mind really is.

Remember how I have translated the words of Paul for more clarity: Let this Mind Be You, which is also Christ Jesus.

Mind You are indeed, and not a body.

And if You need more incentive than the beauty of the aim, this is how You teleport, with this new Mind understanding.

⁸ After a while, interfering thoughts will become harder to find. Try, however, to continue a minute or so longer, attempting to catch a few of the idle thoughts which escaped your attention before, but do not strain or make undue effort in doing this. Then tell yourself:

⁹ On this clean slate, let my true function be written for me.

¹⁰ You need not use these exact words, but try to get a sense of being willing to have your illusions of purpose be replaced by truth.

Imagine consciousness with only joyous thought, and only one single purpose, which is to Waken.

¹¹ Finally, repeat the idea for today once more and devote the rest of the practice period to trying to focus on its importance to you, the relief its acceptance will bring you by resolving your conflicts once and for all, and the extent to which you really want salvation in spite of your own foolish ideas to the contrary.

You really could just forget all Your goals, keeping but this one.  Things won’t fall apart, on the contrary.  Everything will be much more joyous for You, and much clearer.  So much happiness stands waiting for You.

¹² In the shorter practice periods, which should be undertaken at least once an hour, use this form in applying today’s idea:

¹³ My only function is the one God gave me.
I want no other and I have no other.

¹⁴ Sometimes close your eyes as you practice, and sometimes keep them open and look about you. It is what you see now that will be totally changed when you accept today’s idea completely.

I am here with but one goal, and that is to Love My Brother.

Let me not forget my function.

My function is Love and Its extension.  There is no other reason to be here, ‘though I thought there was.  It seemed to Me that I was here to please Myself as much as possible and to get all that was due to Me.  Could I have been more mistaken!

¹ Today’s idea is merely another way of saying, “Let me not wander into temptation.” The purpose of the world you see is to obscure your function of forgiveness and provide you with a justification for forgetting it. It is the temptation to abandon God and His Son, taking on a physical appearance. It is this which the body’s eyes look upon.

In other words, it is the lack of willingness to Love that keeps You in the dream, going round, either in vicious cycles of self-centeredness or self-righteousness.  In this manner You abandon God, Yourself, and Your Brother.

Will You continue to be this?  For both I and the Holy Spirit are coming to You constantly, and We’re suggesting that You choose again.

For You have opted for the self-indulgent weakness of the ego, with all its attendant misery; and We are offering the strength of Christ to You instead.

Christ stands for Love, no matter what: “Father I forgive them for They know not what They do.”  With that little word left out, it makes the Father seem punishing, unforgiving.  Oh no, never.  It is the separated Son that needs to learn forgiveness, because S/He has forgotten how to Love. In every situation, each instant, let Me remind You.

Hear My loving Voice: Brother, choose again. Sister, choose again.  This time choose for Love.  Forgive Your Brother.  Forgive Your Sister. … And forgive Yourself.

² Nothing the body’s eyes seem to see can be anything but a form of temptation, – and God leads You not into temptation, but, instead, delivers You from evil. – since this was the purpose of the body itself. – The temptation to find a use other than Love for Your Brother is antithetic to Your Function, which is only Love. – Yet we have learned that the Holy Spirit has another use for all the illusions you have made, and therefore He sees another purpose in them. To the Holy Spirit, the world is a place where you learn to forgive yourself what you think of as your sins. – The ones You project out on Your Brother. – In this perception, the physical appearance of temptation becomes the spiritual recognition of salvation. 

Your willingness to allow the sinlessness of Your Brother shows You Your own God-given Innocence.  For the Gifts You give become Yours as well.

³ To review our last few lessons, your function here is to be the light of the world, a function given you by God. It is only the arrogance of the ego that leads you to question this and only the fear of the ego that induces you to regard yourself as unworthy of the task assigned to you by God Himself.

These are ego ploys to keep You dreaming.  God gives You the freedom to ignore them: these suggestions that You are unable.  He knows that You are equal to the job.

You are not asked to do this without help. Right this very instant He is Be-ing You in all of Your Holy Perfection.  This is a constant on which You may rely with confidence.  You are not alone.  God is always Here.  God is always Now.  Just reach out and trust.

⁴ The world’s salvation awaits your forgiveness, because through it does the Son of God escape from all illusions and thus from all temptation. The Son of God is you. Only by fulfilling the function given you by God will you be happy. That is because your function is to be happy by using the means by which happiness becomes inevitable.

Love God – which is really loving Good – with all Your heart and soul and might and mind, and Your Neighbour as Yourself.  This is the way to happiness and peace, both exquisite and inviolable.

To the ego mindset, this sounds like Superman, something out of a comic strip.  Yes, with one great exception: there is no kryptonite to touch the Son of God.  Harm seems to exist only in dreams, which are temporal, and without reality.

The son of man, run by an ego, is a misperception.  The Son of God is Real and Eternal.  Sister, choose again.  Brother, choose again.  This time choose what’s Real.

⁵ There is no other way. Therefore every time you choose whether or not to fulfill your function, you are really choosing whether to be happy or not. Let us remember this today. Let us remind ourselves of it in the morning and again at night and all through the day as well.

Choose to be happy. You can always choose.  Choose for happiness.

Think You that I am repetitive?  Look around the travesty of Heaven that the ego creates continuously.  Don’t You think it needs to be corrected?

⁶ Prepare yourself in advance for all the decisions you will make today by remembering that they are all really very simple. Each one will lead to happiness or unhappiness. Can such a simple decision really be difficult to make? Let not the form of the decision deceive you. Complexity of form does not imply complexity of content. It is impossible that any decision on earth can have a content different from just this one simple choice. That is the only choice the Holy Spirit sees. Therefore it is the only choice there is.

If I’m not willing to see the Son of God, I’ve not yet forgiven Myself nor forgiven Others, for I’m choosing to continue dreaming.

⁷ Today, then, let us practice with these thoughts:

⁸ Let me not forget my function.
Let me not try to substitute mine for God’s.
Let me forgive and be happy.

⁹ At least once devote ten or 15 minutes to reflecting on this with closed eyes. Related thoughts will come to help you if you remember the crucial importance of your function to you and to the world.

Do I really think this is a hardship???

¹⁰ In the frequent applications of today’s idea to be made throughout the day, devote several minutes to reviewing these thoughts and then to thinking about them and about nothing else. This will be difficult at first, particularly since you are not proficient in the mind discipline which it requires. – And yet You can be.  I have faith in You. – You may need to repeat “Let me not forget my function” quite often, to help you concentrate.

¹¹ Two forms of shorter practice periods are required. At times, do the exercises with your eyes closed, trying to concentrate on the thoughts you are applying. At other times keep your eyes open after reviewing the thoughts and look slowly and unselectively about you, telling yourself:

¹² This is the world it is my function to save.

The very fact that You are being asked to do this should free You from any fear or despair You might feel about the world situation.  God is giving You a concrete solution.

Accept it with joy and inspiration!

The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness.

For minds are Joined, and peace flows like a river from My mind to all My Brothers’ minds, for there really aren’t separate minds; there’s just the Mind of God.

¹ How holy are you who have the power to bring peace to every mind! – For it comes to You through Our connection. For Every One may access Me through consciousness.  And when We are joined, You do share in that accession.  Indeed, the experience is Holy. – How blessed are you who can learn to recognize the means for letting this be done through you! What purpose could you have that would bring you greater happiness?

I feel the humbleness that You are feeling, and the joy at all possibilities for Good.  From these feelings does come My Infinite patience with All My Others Who linger dreaming.

² You are indeed the light of the world with such a function. – And so You see the great need and the great importance of letting Your Light be consistent.  For though You knew it not before – nor do Your Brothers – yet do They rely on You – and You on Them – for Your shared clarity of Vision. – The Son of God looks to you for his redemption. It is yours to give him, for it belongs to you. – For can You give without a Receiver? – Accept no trivial purpose or meaningless desire in its place, or you will forget your function and leave the Son of God in hell. – The world has so many distractions to keep You from Your God, Your Belovèd Source.  Thus the world is hell. – You can clearly see: This is no idle request that is being asked of you. You are asked to accept salvation that it may be yours to give.

Whatever Good You do – whatever Joy You feel – radiates out immediately to All the Brotherhood.  You have been hearing this from Me for decades, just in slightly different terminology.

So the statement: “Laugh and the world laughs with You; cry and You cry alone.” is only half accurate.  Your sorrow is shared as well; not just Your joy.

So watch Your thinking.

³ Recognizing the importance of this function, we will be happy to remember it very often today. We will begin the day by acknowledging it and close the day with the thought of it in our awareness. And throughout the day, we will repeat this as often as we can:

⁴ The light of the world brings peace to every
mind through my forgiveness.
I am the means God has appointed for the salvation of the world.

Remember, You are here for Giving, not for getting.  And what a precious Gift You have to give to All.

⁵ You will probably find it easier to let the related thoughts come to you in the minute or two which you should devote to considering this if you can close your eyes. Do not, however, wait for such an opportunity. No chance should be lost for reinforcing today’s idea.

⁶ Remember that God’s Son looks to you for his salvation. And who but your Self must be His Son?

Each Gift given to a Brother – or to millions of Brothers – does flow back to You.

You may give freely!

Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.

What is Your forgiveness but the recognition of Every One as the belovèd Son and as Your belovèd Brother.   And as this Light dawns as You, do You become illumined too.

¹ It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light. – When His friends brought the palsied man to Me for healing, They couldn’t get Him in the door, for all the people, and so They brought Him through the ceiling!  Will You approach forgiveness with the same determination, for that’s what’s needed!  This is why the Bible says that You must Love God with all Your heart and soul and might and mind, and I followed that with this addendum: And Love Your Neighbour as Yourself.₁  – It is your forgiveness that lets you recognize the light in which you see. – For the unforgiving heart is resolutely being blind. – Forgiveness is the demonstration that you are the light of the world. – The kind willingness to see Your Brother through the eyes of Love does bring to Your eyes illumination. – Through your forgiveness does the truth about yourself return to your memory. Therefore in your forgiveness lies your salvation.

For the same eyes of Love that behold God within Your Brother can see God as You.  For when You free Your Brother from the chains of ‘sin’, You free Yourself from them as well.

² Illusions about yourself and the world are one. That is why all forgiveness is a gift to yourself. Your goal is to find out who you are, having denied your identity by attacking creation and its Creator. Now you are learning how to remember the truth. For this, attack must be replaced by forgiveness so that thoughts of life may replace thoughts of death.

Way back in what You think of as ‘time’, recorded in the Bible, You did redo Creation, pretending to be God, and then made Yourselves over into something that You called ‘man’.  And man is not the Son of God, and nor is woman; for the Son of God is quite complete, not fragmented.

For never was there a ‘beginning’, not to God, nor to You as His Offspringting.  ‘Time’ came from the separation, for the Real is Eternal.

The separation is – plain and simple – an attack – blatant – on Reality; and, therefore, on God.

³ Remember that in every attack you call upon your own weakness, while every time you forgive you call upon the strength of Christ in you.  – And please do remember that forgiveness comes not of Your largess, but from Your Love. It is natural to Your Living Love. – Do you not then begin to understand what forgiveness will do for you? – It will restore Your Self to You. Listen: It will remove all sense of weakness, strain, and fatigue from your mind. It will take away all fear and guilt and pain. – These are the things that hide Your Self from You. For You are really super man, super in the sense of far on beyond the concept ‘man’ (or ‘woman’). – It will restore the invulnerability and power God gave His Son to your awareness.

Your True Be-ing is much more than You have ever realized as You languish dreaming.

⁴ Let us be glad to begin and end this day by practicing today’s idea and to use it as frequently as possible throughout the day. It will help to make the day as happy for you as God wants you to be. And it will help those around you as well as those who seem to be far away in space and time to share this happiness with you.

⁵ As often as you can, closing your eyes if possible, say to yourself:

⁶ Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.
I would fulfill my function that I may be happy.

Let Me remember always that I am here for giving not for getting.  It is in giving that I understand that My completeness is full and running over.  I have infinity of Love with which to gift My Brother.

⁷ Then devote a minute or two to considering your function and the happiness and release it will bring you.

And spend a little time contemplating the peace and joy that always being Loved will bring Your Brother.  Happiness for You.  Happiness for Him.  Another win-win.

⁸ Let related thoughts come freely, for your heart will recognize these words, and in your mind is the awareness that they are true. Should your attention wander, repeat the idea and add:

⁹ I would remember this because I want to be happy.

I am the light of the world.

Take heed of My words 2000 years ago, and don’t let the ego hide Your Light.₁

¹ Who is the light of the world except God’s Son?  – And tell Me: Who else is God’s Son but You? – This, then, is merely a statement of the truth about yourself.

This is Who and What You are, and to seek to hide it is extremely arrogant.  As if something else could take the place of God’s dear Holy Son.

It is the opposite of a statement of pride, of arrogance, or of self-deception. It does not describe the self-concept you have made. It does not refer to any of the characteristics with which you have endowed your idols. – a paltry puppet – It refers to you as you were created by God. It simply states the truth.

You are the Son of God, and You are the Light of the world, illumined by His eternal Radiance.

² To the ego, today’s idea is the epitome of self-glorification. But the ego does not understand humility, mistaking it for self-debasement. Humility consists of accepting your role in salvation and in taking no other. – Humility is the willingness to not be in control. – It is not humility to insist that you cannot be the light of the world if that is the function God assigned to you. – It’s pure rebellion instigated solely by the ego. – It is only arrogance that would assert this function cannot be for you, and arrogance is always of the ego.

And Son of God, You are not an ego.

³ True humility requires that you accept today’s idea because it is God’s Voice Which tells you it is true. This is a beginning step in accepting your real function on earth. It is a giant stride toward taking your rightful place in salvation. It is a positive assertion of your right to be saved and an acknowledgment of the power that is given you to save others.

What am I saying here to All of You who read this?  The Course In Miracles would not have drawn You to it, were You not ready to Awaken.  That is the Function of the Light of the world, to waken All who are trapped in dreams.

You are Your Brother’s Saviour, and He is Yours.  Says the hymn: “Abide not in the realm of dreams, no matter how fair it seems.”

You are here only to Awaken and to wake Your Brother. This is done through Love.

⁴ You will want to think about this idea as often as possible today. It is the perfect answer to all illusions and therefore to all temptation. It brings all the images you have made about yourself to the truth and helps you depart in peace, unburdened and certain of your purpose.

I am the Son of God.  This means that I am not a ‘human’, but something far more good and wonderful: Son of God I am; thus all Good is possible both from Me as well as for Me.  Brother, please instruct Me.  How do I begin to live this Light?

That is so simple, Willing One.  As You are willing to let go of all the lies You have believed about Yourself and Others.  You are the Son of God and share His Mind. What God Knows belongs to You as well.

Simply accept this.

⁵ As many practice periods as possible should be undertaken today, although each one need not exceed a minute or two. They should begin with telling yourself:

⁶ I am the light of the world.
That is my only function.
That is why I am here.

To truly Be Who I am is all that God expects of Me.

⁷ Then think about these statements for a short while, preferably with your eyes closed if the situation permits.

This acknowledgement is quite powerful, yet gentle, peaceful.  It is a relief to stop pretending.

Let a few related thoughts come to you, and repeat the idea to yourself if your mind wanders away from the central thought.

⁸ Be sure both to begin and end the day with a practice period. Thus you will awaken with an acknowledgment of the truth about yourself, reinforce it throughout the day, and turn to sleep as you reaffirm your function and your only purpose here. These two practice periods may be longer than the rest if you find them helpful and want to extend them.

I am the Light of the world.  God does need Me to shine as He.  This is My Function.  And My Function brings only happiness.

⁹ Today’s idea goes far beyond the ego’s petty views of what you are and what your purpose is. As a bringer of salvation, this is obviously necessary. This is the first of a number of giant steps we will take in the next few weeks. Try today to begin to build a firm foundation for these advances.

Understanding Who and What You are will be very helpful.  Your abilities stand waiting for You.

¹⁰ You are the light of the world. God has built His plan for the salvation of His Son on you.

Infinite is Your ability to radiate Your Love, and light up the world.  Dear Brothers, Sisters, will You shine with Me?

You do know how to shine: Your Light is Love.

[46] God is the Love in which I forgive.

And, as this Love, is what You call ‘forgiving’ transformed for You.  Heretofore, forgiving was You – in Your largess – graciously granting Your forgiveness to a most undeserving sinner.

Love, which is Reality, sees but the sinless Son of God.

² God does not forgive because He has never condemned. The blameless cannot blame, and those who have accepted their innocence see nothing to forgive. Yet forgiveness is the means by which I will recognize my innocence. – Forgiveness is My blessing for Myself! – It is the reflection of God’s Love on earth. – My recognition of the Love I am. –  It will bring me near enough to Heaven that the Love of God can reach down to me and raise me to my home.

The “last step”₁ of which I’ve spoken to You.

[47] God is the Strength in which I trust.

Where else would I trust but in God’s Omnipotence.  For there is no other power.

Far too long have I set Myself against His Will for Good for Me by desiring to go it on My own, without consulting Him.  Now I truly wish to make no decisions on My own. Not ever.

³ It is not my own strength through which I forgive. It is through the strength of God in me, which I am remembering as I forgive. As I begin to see, I recognize His reflection on earth. I forgive all things because I feel the stirring of His strength in me.

And this strength comes only through My willingness to let Him be in charge totally.  Why wouldn’t I when ego ‘rule’ has brought only misery.  And what I find is that I have but Love suffusing Me when I defer to Him.

And I begin to remember the Love I chose to forget, but Which has not forgotten me.

And I rest content within and a part of this wondrous Peace.  Thanks to God for His Gifts beyond compare.

[48] There is nothing to fear.

In a Universe of Love this becomes clearly obvious.

⁴ How safe the world will look to me when I can see it! – when it is but one more step to Heaven! – It will not look anything like what I imagine I see now. – For the world is not material at all, for it is pure Spirit, just as You and all Your Brothers and Your Sisters are.  You have taught Yourselves to believe a lie: that Spirit only happens after You so-called ‘die’, that ‘matter’ is the stuff that makes up the living.  It is just the opposite!  Not only is ‘matter’ not synonymous with Life.  It simply isn’t.  Love, another Name for Spirit, is Your True Living Substance. – Everyone and everything I see will lean toward me to bless me. I will recognize in everyone my dearest Friend. What could there be to fear in a world which I have forgiven and which has forgiven me?

What is it that really needs the forgiving.  Not the ‘sins’ You all think have been committed over the eons, but the moment of separation and the thought that did lead up to it.   Well dearest Ones, the thing never happened!

The willfulness that did suggest it brought on a stupor from which You’ve yet to waken.  Nothing bad has really happened.  It’s all been a dream, and You can Awaken.

And to what will You Awaken?  The ego insists it must be punishment, for that is its forte.  Not so the gentle Power of Our God.  I will repeat this: this is not the Power of Our Father-Mother God, Whose only way is the one of lovingkindness.

Your Bible calls it mercy, and that is not the right translation, for it does imply sinners that do need forgiveness.  Not so the Gift of A Course In Miracles, which says that when You are forgiving, it is of ‘sin’ that never really happened.

Hence ‘mercy’ is not needed, just the pure lovingkindness that sees not a ‘sinner’ but the Son of God.

Is this hard to swallow?  If Your Brother hurts You in a dream, will You be angry with Him when You do awaken from it?

Yes, Sister, You did hear Me right.  The perceived ‘need’ for vengeance is the thing that keeps Dreamers in the dream.

‘If I wake up (the ego says for the Son of God), then that so-and-so will get away with all S/He did to Me.  No way!  I’d rather stay asleep for an eternity than let them free of hurting Me.’

Makes sense, does it not, to Someone quite immature in their ability to Love.

[49] God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.

Guiding Me, loving and supporting Me in all endeavours.

⁵ There is not a moment in which God’s Voice ceases to call on my forgiveness to save me. There is not a moment in which His Voice fails to direct my thoughts, guide my actions, and lead my feet. I am walking steadily on toward truth. There is nowhere else I can go because God’s Voice is the only voice and the only guide that has been given to His Son.

The path in which He leads Me is but the way of Love.  As the sun does shine away all mists of the early morning, so does His Love shine away the hell of separation, replacing it with Heaven and His pure Happiness.

[50] I am sustained by the Love of God.

You believe that air, and food, and water are what keep You alive, yet these words are truth: “Fed by Thy Love Divine We live, for Love alone is Life”.₂

⁶ As I listen to God’s Voice, I am sustained by His Love. As I open my eyes, His Love lights up the world for me to see. As I forgive, His Love reminds me that His Son is sinless. And as I look upon the world with the vision He has given me, I remember that I am His Son.

And We say: “Amen”, so be His Good Will.  And, again: “Amen.”

¹ Chapter 7, The Consistency of the Kingdom.  II Bargaining versus Healing

We have said that the last step in the reawakening of knowledge is taken by God.  This is true, but it is hard to explain in words because words are symbols, and nothing that is true needs to be explained.  However, the Holy Spirit has the task of translating the useless into the useful, the meaningless to to the meaningfull, and the temporary into the timeless.  He can therefore tell you something about this last step, although this one You must know yourself, since by it you know what you are.  This is your being.

God does not take steps because His accomplishments are not gradual.  He does not teach because His creations are changeless.  He does nothing last because He created first and for always.  It must be understood that the word “first” as applied to Him is not a time concept.  He is first in the sense that He is the first in the Holy Trinity itself.  He is the Prime Creator because He created His co-creators.  Because He did, time applies neither to Him, nor to what He created.  The “last step” that God will take was therefore true in the beginning, is true now, and will be true forever.

(Current note, reiterating: The words “beginning”, “now”, “forever” all refer to Now, and are temporary accommodations to describe Always.  What is True and Real is always True and Real, even when perceived ‘in time’.)

[41] God goes with me wherever I go.

God goes as Me₁ wherever I do go.  This cannot be emphasized too strongly.   God is not Your sidekick going with You, like Lone Ranger and Tonto.  God IS You.

² How can I be alone when God always goes with me? How can I be doubtful and unsure of myself when perfect certainty abides in Him?

As always, the key is to get still and Listen for His Voice.

How can I be disturbed by anything when He rests in me in absolute peace?

I must remember instantly to hand it over to Him.  This is Yours belovèd Holy Spirit.  Take over for You always Know the right and Guide Me wisely..

How can I suffer when love and joy surround me through Him? Let me not cherish illusions about myself. I am perfect because God goes with me wherever I go.

I am perfect because God is always Be-ing Me just so.

[42] God is my strength. Vision is His gift.

To see as God is to understand as He Whose Vision is omnipotent.. For seeing only Good does give all-Power.

³ Let me not look to my own eyes to see today. – For My eyes see but My misguided thought.. – Let me be willing to exchange my pitiful illusion of seeing for the vision that is given by God. Christ’s vision is His gift, and He has given it to me. Let me call upon this gift today, so that this day may help me to understand eternity.

Christ here is not a Person, referring unto Me, but rather It is what You really are, and Vision is a forever quality of Your Divinity.

[43] God is my Source. I cannot see apart from Him.

His eyes are My True eyes, just as the rays do shine the light of the sun.  The insistence to see apart from Him is quite exhausting and causes presbyopia.

⁴ I can see what God wants me to see. I cannot see anything else. – What I think I see is pure delusion. –Beyond His Will lie only illusions. It is these I choose when I think I can see apart from Him. It is these I choose when I try to see through the body’s eyes. Yet the vision of Christ has been given me to replace them. It is through this vision that I choose to see.

How do I do this?

That question is quite excellent, and You already know the answer, for it’s the same refrain, over and over again:

Today I will make no decisions on My own, but will let the Holy Spirit respond always, in every way for Me.

[44] God is the Light in which I see.

Seeing as an ego mindset has kept Me in the dark for eons.

⁵ I cannot see in darkness. God is the only Light. Therefore if I am to see, it must be through Him. I have tried to define what seeing is, and I have been wrong. Now it is given me to understand that God is the Light in which I see. Let me welcome vision and the happy world it will show me.

I am really curious to see what Vision really is, for I feel from You right now that It is far beyond seeing a nicer picture.

Yes. It is far richer than You can presently imagine.

[45] God is the Mind with which I think.

And just as Vision is far beyond Your present idea of seeing, so the Mind of God is above and beyond Your ordinary thinking.

⁶ I have no thoughts I do not share with God. I have no thoughts apart from Him because I have no mind apart from His. As part of His Mind, my thoughts are His and His Thoughts are mine.

Your ‘Human’ thinking has been nothing but insane delusion.  What Joy awaits You.

Take My hand – All of You – for I am leading You to Revelation.  Together We will make that choice to once again cognize Reality. God’s Reality.

[36] My holiness envelops everything I see.

For the Son of God is the Living Presence of the Father, differing from Him only in quantity, not quality.  This is what I meant when I said: “As My Father moves, I move.  The Son can do nothing without the Father.”  Yet is the Son just as the Father.  As the saying goes: Like Father, like Son.

And for clarity, the words “Father” and “Son” refer equally to what the dream calls ‘male and female’, for these terms refer not to gender but to qualities, such as Good and Lovely.

² From my holiness does the perception of the real world come.

As I really am, so I really see.

Having forgiven, I no longer see myself as guilty.

When I know My Brother innocent, I know Myself as well.

I can accept the innocence that is the truth about me.

For it is what I really am, and it feels so wonderfully freeing!  It is as if I had been bound in chains for what seemed an eternity, and now I’m free.  Thank You Brother.

Seen through understanding eyes, the holiness of the world is all I see, for I can picture only the thoughts I hold about myself.

What I see to be Reality does it become for Me.

[37] My holiness blesses the world.

³ The perception of my holiness does not bless me alone. Everyone and everything I see in its light shares in the joy it brings to me. There is nothing that is apart from this joy because there is nothing that does not share my holiness. As I recognize my holiness, so does the holiness of the world shine forth for everyone to see.

How does this work?  It is as if You walked into a room, where Every One was sitting in the dark, not even knowing Light existed.  You flip on the switch to see what/s in the room and Every One is now illuminated.

Thus does Our willingness bless Our Brothers.

[38] There is nothing my holiness cannot do.

For what is Holiness but Our Oneness with Our Source, Our God.  As God Is and does, so must We then be as Reality. What an opportunity We have to bless Alll Our Brothers.

This is not something We can do on Our own, for ‘on Our own’ means separation.

Power and happiness both come from reconnection with Our God, Our Holy Source.  A Holy Cause can only have an Effect that is Holy.

⁴ My holiness is unlimited in its power to heal because it is unlimited in its power to save. – The only thing that needs changing, and thus healing, is the mind. – What is there to be saved from except illusions? And what are all illusions except false ideas about myself? My holiness undoes them all by asserting the truth about me. In the presence of my holiness, which I share with God Himself, all idols vanish.

We all had thought to gain autonomy by separation, usurping the Power of the Father.  And all that happened was impotency.  To say it simply: an unplugged lamp gives off no light at all, yet its possibility of illumination does stay undimmed forever.

All that’s needed ever is the willingness to reconnect.

[39] My holiness is my salvation.

Reality is always Our Saviour, for God is Real, and the dream is not.

⁵ Since my holiness saves me from all guilt, recognizing my holiness is recognizing my salvation. It is also recognizing the salvation of the world. Once I have accepted my holiness, nothing can make me afraid. – The willingness to be Holy is also the unwillingness to operate as an ego; for the ego is a far cry from Holy. This willingness does bring release from fear, for now Your faith is invested in God’s great omnipotence. – And because I am unafraid, everyone must share in my understanding, which is the gift of God to me and to the world.

What You understand is but Your Substance; these words share meaning.

[40] I am blessed as a Son of God.

This is obvious and clear to understand as We look at the Sun and see that all the Rays are One with and as the Sun.

⁶ Herein lies my claim to all good and only good. I am blessed as a Son of God. All good things are mine because God intended them for me. I cannot suffer any loss or deprivation or pain because of who I am. My Father supports me, protects me, and directs me in all things. His care for me is infinite and is with me forever. I am eternally blessed as His Son.

God and I are One.  That One brings forth an endless, joyous Son, of which I am One, of which You are One.

¹ Today let us review these ideas:

[31] I am not the victim of the world I see.

How can this be, for the world is so overwhelming to Me?  So many Individuals, each One with their own agenda, each One sure that He or She is right and deserving of anything They want, despite the needs of their other Brothers.

The problems are not as myriad as they seem.  For the Son of God is right on all these counts and is deserving of all things Good and Real.  Coming from the ego mindset, He is quite confused and so mistaken about what it is He really wants.

Thus S/He feels a victim and has forgotten that S/He made the whole thing up within endless dreaming.

² How can I be the victim of a world that can be completely undone if I so choose? – I have made it up and just pretended it is ‘real’, and am deliberately forgetting that I’m dreaming.  To insure that My fascination with the dream does never end, I’ve invented many drugs, including television, to keep Me from Awakening  And You know I’m quite successful if I do say so Myself!  Yet the Truth is that – My chains are loosened. I can drop them off merely by desiring to do so. The prison door is open. – Not only that!  There are no walls or floors!  And the only jailer is the ego. – I can leave it simply by walking out. Nothing holds me in this world. Only my wish to stay keeps me a prisoner. I would give up my insane wishes and walk into the sunlight at last.

It must be made quite clear here, that ‘dying’ is not what I am meaning with this Lesson.  For there is no death and ‘dying’ can take place only within the dreaming mind.

For even in the dream that seems so real and physical, just like Reality, it all takes place in mind.  A limited and quite selfish mind.  Yet still it is mind, for Consciousness is All there ever is.

[32] I have invented the world I see.

And this is one invention that should not have been patented, not even worthy of the garbage dump!  For it stands defiantly, in opposition to Our God.

³ I made up the prison in which I see myself. All I need do is recognize this, and I am free. I have deluded myself into believing it is possible to imprison the Son of God. I was bitterly mistaken in this belief, which I no longer want. The Son of God must be forever free. He is as God created him, and not what I would make of him. He is where God would have him be, and not where I thought to hold him prisoner.

I have bound Him in a dream that I have called ‘reality’. And it isn’t real.  The Son of God can waken any time He wishes to.  And We All are the Son.

[33] There is another way of looking at the world.

A way that is not prisoner to dreaming.  The realization that it is but an illusion, removes it from its seeming reality giving the Son of God back His freedom.

⁴ Since the purpose of the world is not the one I ascribed to it, there must be another way of looking at it. I see everything upside down, and my thoughts are the opposite of truth. I see the world as a prison for God’s Son. It must be, then, that the world is really a place where he can be set free. I would look upon the world as it is, and see it as a place where the Son of God finds his freedom.

To realize the world’s a dream is to understand that One can Awaken.  It takes but willingness.

[34] I could see peace instead of this.

What You see depends upon the choice You’re making.  Either You wish to look at things from the standpoint of the ego, or You will choose to look with Me Who shares the viewpoint of the Father.

Chaos underlies the ego’s entire point of view. Peace is the consequence of sharing the viewpoint of God expressed as Elder Brother.

⁵ When I see the world as a place of freedom, I will realize that it reflects the laws of God instead of the rules which I made up for it to obey. I will understand that peace, not war, abides in it. And I will perceive that peace also abides in the hearts of all who share this place with me.

Happy is this place, for it is filled to overflowing by the dear Love of God.

[35] My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.

Would that You All would have an experience of Your Holiness, of its joy and of all it’s beauty.

⁶ As I share the peace of the world with my brothers, I begin to understand that this peace comes from deep within myself.  – Welling up and pouring forth like an underground spring, brought to Light, set free at last! – The world I look upon has taken on the light of my forgiveness and shines forgiveness back at me. In this light, I begin to see what my illusions about myself had kept hidden. I begin to understand the holiness of all living things including myself, and their oneness with me.

That hidden spring is but Our unbounded happiness set free, welling up, flowing throughout the Universe, everywhere , every-when, for ever.

¹ Our review for today covers the following:

[26] My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.

Since God is all there is to Me, hateful thoughts are quite unseemly.  Why would I think to misrepresent Myself so grossly?  Do I not understand what it means to be the Son of God?  The happiness attendant with the Loving, so full of joy.  This is Who I am.

² How can I know who I am when I see myself as under constant attack? Pain, illness, loss, age, and death seem to threaten me. All my hopes and wishes and plans appear to be at the mercy of a world I cannot control.

All this distress seems to be ‘out there’ and out of My control.

Yet perfect security and complete fulfilment are my inheritance. I have tried to give my inheritance away in exchange for the world I see. But God has kept my inheritance safe for me. My own real thoughts will teach me what it is.

I cannot be free until I see that the monsters are not apart from Me, My thoughts.  Where the wild things are are in My mind.

Thought needs improvement.

[27] Above all else I want to see.

³ Recognizing that what I see reflects what I think I am, I realize that vision is my greatest need. – I must correct My thinking that I may see Reality. – The world I see attests to the fearful nature of the self-image I have made. – This thing I call a ‘human’, man made out of dirt.  How can this be when God is Spirit, and I am His Offspringing.  Are the rays of light different from the sun?  Where has stopped the sun and where have the rays begun? – If I would remember who I am, it is essential that I let this image of myself go. – I am neither victim nor a hero.  Since I am the Son of God, so is each and every Brother. – As it is replaced by truth, vision will surely be given me. And with this vision, I will look upon the world and upon myself with charity and love.

Does a Brother appear to be extremely hateful to Me?  Then both He and I are seeing Him through a glass quite darkly.  How do I bring light to the situation but to realize that I have believed delusion to be My real vision.

True may it seem to Me to be, yet it’s not Reality. If it isn’t Good as God, it isn’t.  This is how I learn to Love My Brother.

[28] Above all else I want to see differently.

⁴ The world I see holds my fearful self-image in place, and guarantees its continuance. While I see the world as I see it now, truth cannot enter my awareness. I would let the door behind this world be opened for me that I may look past it to the world that reflects the Love of God.

This is the “open door” that “I have set before You”, open for 2000 years and more, it’s promise of joy awaits You.  Come, enter now into My heart of Love.  The Son of God is always innocent.  His dreams of guilt are but pure illusion.  Will You not stand for His Reality?  Evil may He seem to Be within the dream, yet not to God. For dreams are not real, so disbelieve them.  This is how to truly Love Your Brother.  Love is no emotion, but an active, stand for Him as the Holy Son of God.  This is real Loving.

Thus the next Lesson:

[29] God is in everything I see.

⁵ Behind every image I have made, the truth remains unchanged.

No matter how I see a Brother or a Sister, how evil They may seem to be, it is an opportunity to remember God, to see God right there: God Be-ing He or She.

And even when I cannot see It, it is a chance to remember and Be It.  For being willing to bear witness to Our Brother’s and Sister’s Christhood is to Be the Christ indeed.

Thanks be to God for His unending Gift.

Behind every veil I have drawn across the face of love, its light remains undimmed. Beyond all my insane wishes is my will united with the Will of my Father. God is still everywhere and in everything forever. And we who are part of Him will yet look past all appearances and recognize the truth beyond them all.

How is this done?  By giving Me that “little willingness” for which I’ve asked.  That little willingness to see and Be the Christ.

[30] God is in everything I see because God is in my mind.

God is Everything I see, because God is My Mind.  … And Every One else’s.

⁶ In my own mind, behind all my insane thoughts of separation and attack, is the knowledge that all is one forever.

There are no separate minds, for We all share the One Mind of God.  Yet God is not a person having a mind within a body, but is Mind, for Consciousness is All-in-All and of Us.

I have not lost the knowledge of who I am because I have forgotten it. It has been kept for me in the Mind of God, Who has not left His Thoughts. And I, who am among them, am one with them and one with Him.

And What am I?  And What are We All but the Holy Spirit.

¹ Today’s review includes the following:

[21] I am determined to see things differently.

For there has to be not only a better way, but a better world, one that is more like to Heaven.  And I am quite determined to see it!  It now means more to Me than anything.

I do not want to fix the world I see, for it is but one of separation.  I want to find the world that’s just one step away from Heaven.

It is not out there, but within My mind that Vision takes place.

² What I see now are but signs of disease, disaster, and death. This cannot be what God created for His beloved Son.

Of Whom I am One.  This means that better vision is both possible and available to Me, and to All My Brothers.

The very fact that I see such things is proof that I do not understand God. Therefore I also do not understand His Son. What I see tells me that I do not know who I am. – That is a problem! – I am determined to see the witnesses to the truth in me, rather than those that show me an illusion of myself.

For I long to Know Myself – remember Who I am – more than any ‘worldly’ thing!

 

[22] What I see is a form of vengeance.

Indeed it is: vengeance upon Your God.  The words are strong, yet needed, to describe the separation.

It did not flow from Love, but arrogant self-will, which You are finally getting is simply out-pictured in the world You pushed ‘out there’.  Yet it is wholly in Your mind.

³ The world I see is hardly the representation of loving thoughts. It is a picture of attack on everything and by everything. It is anything but a reflection of the Love of God and the love of His Son. It is my own attack thoughts which give rise to this picture. My loving thoughts will save me from this perception of the world and give me the peace God intended me to have.

God’s intention for Me now (and always) is forever Good and Holy.  What a reassuring thought.  With thoughts like this, We’re inhaling Heaven.  Thanks be to God for Be-ing Our Real Mind.

We need do nothing but see the Universe He is Be-ing.  I seem to not be able to control My eyes, nor do I need to.  For My eyes but do obey My thinking.

Thank You Elder Brother for sharing with Us so much better thinking.  The happiness that You’re sharing with Us is phenomenal.

[23] I can escape from the world by giving up attack thoughts.

Therefore, I need not be at all frightened for Others or Myself by all the horrors of the world.  They but outpicture the horrors of Our strange collective thinking.

⁴ Herein lies my salvation, and nowhere else. Without attack thoughts I could not see a world of attack. As forgiveness allows love to return to my awareness, I will see a world of peace and safety and joy. And it is this that I choose to see, in place of what I look on now.

I will use My will and My desire in a loving way, so that My thoughts of Love are blessing Every One.  To give Love is My Life’s purpose.

For it is but Love alone that We are either here for-giving or for-getting.

[24] I do not perceive my own best interests.

The ego-mindset is alone focused on getting, in its quest for ‘happiness’.  ‘Getting’ has not ever blessed Anyone.  And it hides the True Selfhood of the Son, of Whom You are One.

⁵ How could I recognize my own best interests when I do not know who I am? What I think are my best interests would merely bind me closer to the world of illusions. I am willing to follow the Guide God has given me to find out what my own best interests are, recognizing that I cannot perceive them by myself.

My Real best interests, Gifts of God, can’t be anything but Good.

[25] I do not know what anything is for.

How can I when I am clueless to God’s Good Reality?  All I really know of Good is that it must be Love, the Love that’s here for Giving.

The ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ and ‘whats’ and ‘wheres’ are a mystery to Me.

They won’t be for long.  For desire is a prayer that’s always answered, because You are the Son of God.  And the Father’s good pleasure, certain it is, to give You the entire Kingdom.

⁶ To me, the purpose of everything is to prove that my illusions about myself are real. It is for that purpose that I attempt to use everyone and everything. It is this that I believe the world is for. Therefore I do not recognize its real purpose. The purpose I have given the world has led to a frightening picture of it. Let me open my mind to its real purpose by withdrawing the one I have given it, and learning the truth about it.

     Dear Brother, thank You for Your faithfulness,     down through the ages, never giving up on Us.  Your patient Teaching is bearing some good lovely fruit. Hearts opening and flowering in grateful transformation.  Dear blessèd Jesus.

¹ These are the review ideas for today:

[16]  I have no neutral thoughts.

Every thought that passes through My mind has an impact one way or another upon My daily life.  I have no random thoughts.  Each one either detracts from happiness or adds to it.  Each one makes Me more distant or moves Me closer to Our God.

² Neutral thoughts are impossible because all thoughts have power.

This is a universe of consciousness and not of ‘matter’.

They will either make a false world or lead me to the real one.

I am in charge of all My thinking, although I like to pretend that I am not.

But thoughts cannot be without effects. As the world I see arises from my thinking errors, so will the real world rise before my eyes as I let my errors be corrected. My thoughts cannot be neither true nor false. – Neither can they be separate from My desires, whether I choose for happiness or misery. – They must be one or the other. What I see shows me which they are.

I’m not a victim.

[17]  I see no neutral things.

I see no neutral things because I have no neutral thoughts.  It is clearly a mathematical equation:

no neutral thoughts = no neutral things.

How very simple.

³ What I see witnesses to what I think. If I did not think, I would not exist, because life is thought.

God is thinking Me.  Thinking Me with Love.  Thinking Me as Love.  “Love alone is Life.”₁  

Let me look on the world I see as the representation of my own state of mind. – This is not a pleasant thought, for I know You so want better from Us – and also for Us – dear Elder Brother.  All is not lost though, for I know that my state of mind can change. And so I also know the world I see can change as well.

A world shifted back to Heaven is always possible, for Anyone can change their minds, choose once again.  Healing is always possible.

[18] I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing.

Since minds are joined, We do involuntarily share the effects of Our thinking.  And what We think in here, We see out there.

⁴ If I have no private thoughts, I cannot see a private world. Even the mad idea of separation had to be shared before it could form the basis of the world I see. Yet that sharing was a sharing of nothing. I can also call upon my real thoughts, which share everything with everybody. As my thoughts of separation call to the separation thoughts of others, so my real thoughts awaken the real thoughts in them. And the world my real thoughts show me will dawn on their sight as well as mine.

Since all things that We think and act do affect all Our Others, then Holy Spirit guide Me to only speak Love, only act Love.

[19]  I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.

I had thought that My thoughts were private; My mind was Mine to do with as I pleased.  Now I know that every thought I have does affect every Brother.

⁵ I am alone in nothing. Everything I think or say or do touches all the universe. – We are so very, very connected. – A Son of God cannot think or speak or act in vain. He cannot be alone in anything. It is therefore in my power to change every mind along with mine, for mine is the power of God.

And this dear, loving Power is able to be used only with Integrity.

[20]  I am determined to see.

⁶ Recognizing the shared nature of my thoughts, I am determined to see. I would look upon the witnesses that show me the thinking of the world has been changed. – “The oil of joy for the pain of mourning.”₂ – I would behold the proof that what has been done through me has enabled love to replace fear, laughter to replace weeping, and abundance to replace loss. I would look upon the real world, and let it teach me that my will and the Will of God are one.

¹ Today we will review the following:

[11] My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.

It should be getting pretty clear by now that thinking as You practice it is not only pointless, but actually deleterious.

² Since the thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything, the world which pictures them can have no meaning. What is producing this world is insane, and so is what it produces. Reality is not insane, and I have real thoughts as well as insane ones. I can therefore see a real world if I look to my real thoughts as my guide for seeing.

Where do My real thoughts come from but My connection with the Holy Spirit, also known as My Right Mind or My Sanity.

These Real Thoughts are always available to Me, for the Holy Spirit exists for Real just exactly where insanity does claim to be.  Brother please continue with what You are unfolding to Me.

With pleasure.  You are hearing that the understanding of this fact – the ever-Presence of the Holy Spirit, Every One’s Right Mind – hold promise of reunification for All of those afflicted with what humans call brain injury or damage: so-called alzheimer’s, autism, asperger’s, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, guillaine-barr, prader-willi, down’s syndrome and all the countless others.

Right where those problems claim to be revealing stands the Holy Spirit with Its assurance of healing.

“Brain is not Mind.”₁ The Holy Spirit is.

[12] I am upset because I see a meaningless world.

And You are saying that the world itself is not the problem but My view of it.  To hear that is very disconcerting!

Indeed, about as disconcerting as finding half a worm in an apple You are eating.  Yet would You prefer to have eaten the entire worm?  Just so, would You want to go on in this miserable existence indefinitely, not knowing something better does exist right here, right now, for You and All Your Brothers?

³ Insane thoughts are upsetting. They produce a world in which there is no order anywhere. Only chaos rules a world which represents chaotic thinking, and chaos has no laws. I cannot live in peace in such a world. I am grateful that this world is not real and that I need not see it at all unless I choose to value it. And I do not choose to value what is totally insane and has no meaning.

As You live these words, You will find both joy and peace and freedom.

[13] A meaningless world engenders fear.

The human dream is both paradoxical and pointless, and quite unfair, with a god belief that embodies all these cruel characteristics.

⁴ The totally insane engenders fear because it is completely undependable and offers no grounds for trust. Nothing in madness is dependable. It holds out no safety and no hope. But such a world is not real. I have given it the illusion of reality, and have suffered from my belief in it. Now I choose to withdraw this belief and place my trust in reality. In choosing this, I will escape all the effects of the world of fear because I am acknowledging that it does not exist.

In doing this You need trust in God as Love, for You are stepping out, with no map, into the unknown.  And I can reassure You that You’ll walk the path of Love I trod without a crucifixion, for I have laid out this path for You with all the chapters in the book.

The journey has no distance, only learning Love.

[14] God did not create a meaningless world.

For everything of God is perfect and has exquisite meaning, including You.

⁵ How can a meaningless world exist if God did not create it? – Obviously it can’t, for there is only One Real Creator.  And that is just God and not the ego. Only One is Real, and that One is God. – He is the Source of all meaning, and everything that is real is in His Mind. It is in my mind too because He created it with me. Why should I continue to suffer from the effects of my own insane thoughts when the perfection of creation is my home? Let me remember the power of my decision and recognize where I really abide.

Heaven is My Home, and not the travesty of Heaven that We call ‘the world’.  Right where the ‘world’ appears to be, it is simply hiding Heaven.

[15] My thoughts are images which I have made.

That’s why they’re ‘Mine’ instead of God’s, and they stand for nothing Real.

⁶ Whatever I see reflects my thoughts. – Not Reality. – It is my thoughts which tell me where I am and what I am. – And where do these thoughts originate but from the egomind.  Or rather, better said: as mindlessness, for it isn’t real. –The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death – which are not of God – shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts – (Another time We will discuss again the reason why sin, sickness and death were ego-created) –and am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see. Yet God’s way is sure. The images I have made cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so. My will is His, and I will place no other gods before Him. 

This thought will I cherish: that God, Good, is the only Power.

¹ Today’s review covers these ideas:

[6] I am upset because I see what is not there.

And I do believe in everything I see, not understanding that things are not seen externally but internally. i.e. It’s all going on in My mind.

² Reality is never frightening. It is impossible that it could upset me. Reality brings only perfect peace. When I am upset, it is always because I have replaced reality with illusions which I made up. The illusions are upsetting because I have given them reality and thus regard reality as an illusion. Nothing in God’s creation is affected in any way by this confusion of mine. I am always upset by nothing.

The problem is it seems so very real to You that it’s hard to disbelieve it.  Yet ‘hard’ is not impossible if You are willing to be self-disciplined, turning to God, or Me or the Holy Spirit when temptation comes to You.  Come it does, for You are so accustomed to bowing down to the ego.

Yet God alone deserves Your reverence.

[7] I see only the past.

This trait is the nature of the ego mindset: to dwell within the past with endless repetitions.  And yet You looked as blindly at what You call the ‘past’ as You do in what You call the ‘present’.  And You are never present in the present, for the unreal ‘past’ does rule all Your vision.

³ As I look about, I condemn the world I look upon. I call this seeing. I hold the past against everyone and everything, making them my “enemies.”

– Quite a conundrum, until You turn and ask for help from Me, from the Father, or the Holy Spirit. –

When I have forgiven myself and remembered who I am, I will bless everyone and everything I see. There will be no past and therefore no “enemies.” And I will look with God on all that I failed to see before.

This Holy view can bring Me only joy, gratitude, and deep appreciation for the Father’s Love.

[8] My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.

No wonder I see nothing as it is.  I’m too busy with contemplation of how I thought it was!  Thinking is the key! I must clear My thought.

⁴ I see only my own thoughts, and my mind is preoccupied with the past. What, then, can I see as it is? Let me remember that I look on the past to prevent the present from dawning on my mind. Let me understand that I am trying to use time against God. Let me learn to give the past away, realizing that in so doing I am giving up nothing.

When You are willing to stay in the present – let Us stop now and do this with the painful migraine.

You went back to sleep earlier and woke with joy without it, then left the present by remembering that You had had jt, and the pain returned.

Yes, this is identical to Babci’s experience of waking with a surety that She could walk again, being afraid to try it, and thus remaining still unable to.₁

If You will stay focused on here and now with Me, it will dissipate again.  Let go Your fear of how persistent migraine can be and of ice skating today being ruined by the pain.  They are imposed illegitimately.  These thoughts are of the ego, surely not the Holy Spirit!

Why trust the ego? The ego has no Love for You, and the Holy Spirit absolutely Loves You.

Put Your trust with Love.

[9] I see nothing as it is now.

Nor have I ever, since I began the dreaming.  And yet I have put so much faith in the strange ‘reality’ of dreaming.

⁵ If I see nothing as it is now, it can truly be said that I see nothing.

So there is nothing to upset Me, cause Me pain or scare Me. There is nothing, that is, except My own imagination.

I can see only what is now. The choice is not whether to see the past or the present: it is merely whether to see or not. What I have chosen to see has cost me vision.

– For I have really chosen not to see God’s Reality.–

Now I would choose again that I may see.

[10] My thoughts do not mean anything.

They are but idle, unreal musings of a mind that’s been dreaming in a stupor!

⁶ I have no private thoughts. Yet it is only private thoughts of which I am aware. What can these thoughts mean? They do not exist, and so they mean nothing. Yet my mind is part of creation and part of its Creator. Would I not rather join the thinking of the universe than to obscure all that is really mine with my pitiful and meaningless “private” thoughts?

That could not be any clearer, could it?

¹ Babci was my Mother-in-law.  In her sixties She had a massive heart attack, and then a stroke on top of it.  As She was refusing therapy, the hospital wanted Her in a nursing home.  I suggested to my Husband that I work with her, improving her diet.  Figuring She would say no, He asked her and She said yes.

She came with many pills that were quickly unnecessary.  In one week She went from foetid dark brown urine, to going like a baby.

There’s much more to the story; and germane here is that She told me that one night in the hospital it came to her that She could walk, and to get up and do it.  And She was afraid, and didn’t.  And the point Brother was making is that I was like that the other night with the migraine.

And 99% of the time, I have very quick healings of them by listening to His Voice; the point being what the Lessons teach: It’s all in Our minds.

LESSON FIFTY ONE through LESSON SIXTY

REVIEW I ~ INTRODUCTION

1 Beginning with today, – Let this become Your mantra, for there is only ever now to be considered. – we will have a series of review periods. We review ideas here, not the past. You tnink I am being inconsistent. Yet must this Guidance speak to many needs, and not just of this moment, but what You call past and future. Each of them will cover five of the ideas already presented, starting with the first and ending with the fiftieth. There will be a few short comments after each of the ideas which you should consider in your review. In the practice periods, the exercises should be done as follows:

2 Begin the day by reading the five ideas, with the comments included. Thereafter, it is not necessary to follow any particular order in considering them, though each one should be practiced at least once.  Put perfect trust in the Holy Spirit to unfold to You just what You need to know in each and every holy moment.  S/He’s always present, meeting all Your needs, as You allow Her.

Devote two minutes or more to each practice period, thinking about the idea and the related comments. Do this as often as possible during the day. If any one of the five ideas appeals to you more than the others, concentrate on that one. At the end of the day, however, be sure to review all of them once more.  By now it must be obvious that You have yet to rein in the ego on a consistent basis.  For that need did give birth to these Lessons.  And continues to.

3 It is not necessary to cover the comments that follow each idea literally or thoroughly in the practice periods. Rather, try merely to emphasize the central point and think about it as part of your review of the idea to which it relates.  Using these ideas in the minutiae of Your day will bring You great blessings.

4 The review exercises should be done with your eyes closed and when you are alone in a quiet place if possible.  You might say that it is the nursery of Awakening. This is emphasized particularly for reviews at your stage of learning. It will be necessary, however, that you learn to require no special settings in which to apply what you have learned. You will need it most in situations which appear to be upsetting, rather than in those which already seem to be calm and quiet.  You are learning to partner Your self that seems so separate with Holy Spirit..

5 The purpose of your learning is to enable you to bring the quiet with you and to heal distress and turmoil.  This teaching does echo the Psalmist, for the instruction remains the same despite the form: “Be still and know that I am God.”

This is not done by avoiding them and seeking a haven of isolation for yourself. You will yet learn that peace is part of you and requires only that you be there to embrace any situation in which you are. You’ll also learn that that is why You’re there. And finally you will learn that there is no limit to where you are, so that your peace is everywhere, as you are.  Just let My words sink in; there’s a level where You do understand them perfectly. The Lessons are a path that leads You here.

6 You will note that for review purposes the ideas are not always given in quite their original form of statement. Use them as they are given here. It is not necessary to return to the original statements nor to apply the ideas as was suggested then. We are now emphasizing the relationships among the first fifty of the ideas we have covered and the cohesiveness of the thought system to which they are leading you.

You need not figure all this out, but simply trust that I know what I’m doing.  Is it yet obvious that the need is to trade autonomy for Partnership? You won’t be sorry, for it’s glorious!

REVIEW I

¹ The review for today covers the following ideas:

[1] Nothing I see means anything.

² The reason this is so is that I see nothing, and nothing has no meaning.  Why do I see nothing?  Nothing that I see has any Reality at all. None whatsoever, so I’m seeing nothing! It is necessary that I recognize this, that I may learn to see. See Reality and not delusions! What I think I see now is taking the place of vision.  Insanity is not Reality. I must let it go by realizing that it has no meaning so that vision may take its place.  And that I may regain My Sanity.

[2] I have given what I see all the meaning it has for me.  Another hallmark of insanity: to see without any connection to My Divinity.  How could I connect having forgotten that I am Divine.

³ I have judged everything I look upon. And it is this and only this that I see. This is not vision. It is merely an illusion of reality, because my judgments have been made quite apart from reality. I am willing to recognize the lack of validity in my judgments because I want to see. My judgments have hurt me, and I do not want to see according to them.  For judgments have so blinded Me that I can no longer see. I dwell in dreams that hide Myself from Me.  Far from rewarding.

[3] I do not understand anything I see.  How could I when it’s not Reality.  That’s the bottom line: is it Real or not?  How can We tell when We but dwell in dreams.  It’s one fantasy after another, and We believe them.  And belief makes them seem real for it but gives validity to the illusion of reality.  Yet can illusions ever become real?  Obviously not, save within a dream!

⁴ How could I understand what I see when I have judged it amiss? What I see is the projection of my own errors of thought. I do not understand what I see because it is not understandable. There is no sense in trying to understand it. This is very reasonable, just not to the ego.  Ahh, so, does say Confucius, with more wisdom than do Dreamers ordinarily possess.  But there is every reason to let it go and make room for what can be seen and understood and loved. You mean that there is something far finer here than ever I have dreamed? Is this so? Are You saying that: I can exchange what I see now for this merely by being willing to do so. Is not this a better choice than the one I made before?  May I choose again?  Can Our good God really be that gracious!  Yes! Indeed, He is.

[4] These thoughts do not mean anything.  Why not?  Good question!  Because they are not in harmony with God.  For they do not flow from a mind that’ is connected with the Holy Spirit.  So let Us choose to make the connection. Only Good can come from sacred Joining.

⁵ The thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything because I am trying to think without God. What I call “my” thoughts are not my real thoughts. It’s not My thinking but that of the awful, churlish ego.  My real thoughts are the thoughts I think with God. Those thoughts are the thoughts I want to know. I am not aware of them because I have made “my” thoughts to take their place. I am willing to recognize that “my” thoughts do not mean anything and to let them go.  (Go to the ego, while I go to God.) I choose to have them be replaced by what they were intended to replace. “My” thoughts are meaningless, but all creation lies in the thoughts I think with God.

[5] I am never upset for the reason I think.  Bottom line: thinking – in and of itself  – is upsetting.  Best to go to God for All the answers.

⁶ I am never upset for the reason I think because I am constantly trying to justify “my” thoughts. I am constantly trying to make them true. I don’t why, since, assuredly, they don’t make Me happy!  As Paul said: “wretched man that I am;” – and wretched am I.  That about covers it for Us Dreamers. I make all things my “enemies” so that my anger is justified and my attacks are warranted.  How far away from Love have I wandered. I have not realized how much I have misused everything I see by assigning this role to it. I have done this to defend a thought system which has hurt me and which I no longer want. I am willing to let it go.  Please help Me, dear Father-Mother.  Please help Me Elder Brother.  I am quite willing.

LESSON FIFTY

I am sustained by the Love of God.  At every instant My mind is held safe and fed with kindness.  You’re cared for like a first-born nursing baby by its Mother.

Precious Christ, cared for by God just as My Mother cared for Me.  The Mother-Love of God cherishes You; both now and forever.  Allow Yourself to feel God’s constant, all-embracing Love.  He lifts You up just as He lifts up each One of Your Brothers.

¹ Here is the answer to every problem that confronts you today and tomorrow and throughout time, until You Awaken from Your dreaming. In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols-pills, money, “protective” clothing, “influence,” “prestige,” being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness which you endow with magical powers.  Until trouble or catastrophe, these things suffice for You. All these things are your replacements for the Love of God.  Yet are they so very empty in comparison with ever-present God, Who gets one day a week devoted to Him if S/He is lucky.  All these things are cherished to ensure a body identification.  And this does include seeing God as so-called ‘masculine’ as well as ‘feminine’.  Does Divine Love that is Infinite have use for a body? They are songs of praise to the ego.  Despite Paul’s words, recorded in the Bible, matter cannot glorify Our God.  For only Love can, and Love is not of bodies but of Mind.

² Do not put your faith in the worthless. It will not sustain you.  Only God can give You gladness.  Only God can give You peace.”₁ Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances. It will lift you out of every trial and raise you high above all the perceived dangers of this world into a climate of perfect peace and safety.  Has there ever been a promise as lovely as this one, this guarantee of Love? It will transport you into a state of mind which nothing can threaten, nothing can disturb, and where nothing can intrude upon the eternal calm of the Son of God.  My Life dwells not in the body, but as the great Love of God.

³ Put not your faith in illusions, which comprise the dream.  Of this, You can be supremely certain. They will fail you. Put all your faith in the Love of God within you, eternal, changeless and forever unfailing. There is no real You but this Love of God.  It is Your Consciousness, thus, Your Substance. This is the answer to whatever confronts you today.  And all days, till confrontation is thus forever ended. Through the Love of God in you, you can resolve all seeming difficulties without effort and in sure confidence. What does this mean, and how can I do  this?  It’s as if You’ve asked Me to speak Swahili?  I’ve not a clue! How do I begin?  With confidence that You can do it because I’ve said You can. Tell yourself this often today. It is a present possibility today. Don’t put it off till tomorrow!  It is a declaration of release from the belief in idols. You are beginning to question the dream, its ‘reality’. It is your acknowledgment of the truth about yourself.  It is Your stand for Your status as the Holy Son of God.

⁴ For ten minutes twice today, morning and evening, let the idea for today sink deep into your consciousness.  You’re admitting its possibility; an open door for its experience.  Repeat it, think about it, let related thoughts come to help you recognize its truth, and allow peace to flow over you like a blanket of protection and surety.  Peace can flll Your mind like a river rising full of happiness. Let no idle and foolish thoughts enter to disturb the holy mind of the Son of God. Such is the Kingdom of Heaven. Such is the resting place where your Father has placed you forever.  It is an ongoing experience of Life so good and glorious that You’ll sing with the king: “My cup runneth over.”₂

¹ Only God can bring us gladness,
Only God can give us peace;
Joys are vain that end in sadness,
Joy divine shall never cease.
Mid the shade of want and sorrow
Undisturbed, our hearts rejoice;
Patient, wait the brighter morrow;
Faithful, heed the Father’s voice.

As the stars in order going,
All-harmonious, He doth move;
Heavenly calm and comfort showing,
Comes the healing word of love.
Who the word of wisdom heareth
Feels the Father Love within,
Where as dawn the shadow cleareth,
Love outshines the night of sin.

For in love is our at-one-ment,
Where all hearts in Him may blend.

Here from prisoning pain and sorrow
Have we all a sure release,
Only God can bring us gladness,
Only God can give us peace.

The Lord is My Shepherd.  I shall not want.

He leadeth Me beside the still waters. He restoreth My Soul.  He leadeth Me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for He is with Me.  His rod and His staff they comfort Me.

He prepareth a table before Me in the presence of My enemies.  He anointeth My head with oil. My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow Me all the days of My life, and I shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

And here is the Twenty-third Psalm with the conscious Idea of Love, as found in Science and Health, page 578:

[Divine Love] is my shepherd.  I shall not want.

[Love] maketh me to lie down in green pastures.  [Love] leadeth me beside the still waters.  [Love] restoreth my soul. [spiritual sense.] [Love] leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

LESSON FORTY-NINE

God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.  What is Your part, but to ask and listen.

Yes, indeed, this Lesson is quite crucial to Awakening; for the need is but to make reconnection.  And this done consistently does  obviously, clearly, end the separation.

¹ It is quite possible to listen to God’s Voice all through the day without interrupting your regular activities in any way. The ego mind is always running vigilantly, as it seeks to control all situations to Your best advantage. Instead of listening to the ego, why not learn to listen to God instead? His counsel is so kind and perfect. The part of your mind in which truth abides is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not.  For it is only in the dream that You could seem to have become disconnected!  For an Idea – which is what You are – cannot ever leave Its Source. How could You. Rays can’t leave the Sun; nor can you leave God.

Therefore, is the dream but pure delusion: an insanity at best, a vengeful hatred at its worst.

It is the other part of your mind that functions in the world and obeys the world’s laws. It is this part which is constantly distracted, disorganized, and highly uncertain.  And also unreal.  How real could be insanity to God, from which All Good flows?

Somewhere in Your mind – that which We’ve called the Holy Spirit – You know that it could not be possible to separate from God.  This notion is preposterous, and is the basis for the entire dream.  How insane does that seem?

There are times when the earth seems to orbit closer to the sun, and this time is one. For the beginning of Awakening is but a sense of receptivity to God, to Love, to Life, that is stirring.  Let Us nurture it so very gently.

² The part that is listening to the Voice of God is calm, always at rest, and wholly certain.  And It truly lives up to Its Name as the Holy Spirit.  It is really the only part there is. In other words, it is but All of You! The other part is a wild illusion, frantic and distraught, but without reality of any kind. Try today not to listen to it. You know that babbling voice-under!  Voice-under because it is always undermining You. What is it but the ego. Try to identify with the part of your mind where stillness and peace reign forever.  Remember that it’s the Holy Spirit! Where All of Us are found to Be as One great, stupendous Whole. Try to hear God’s Voice call to you lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son.  Hear His Love songs speaking of You, Knowing Who You really are.

³ We will need at least four five-minute practice periods today and more if possible. We will try actually to hear the Voice reminding you of God and of your Self. You may also feel It  come first as Love. You are so very, very Loved andSafe, perfectly embraced. We will approach this happiest and holiest of thoughts with confidence, knowing that in doing so we are joining our will with the Will of God. He wants you to hear His Voice. He gave It to you to be heard.  It is Your Voice too, You know; It speaks of God’s forever Love.

⁴ Listen in deep silence. Be very still, and open your mind. Go past all the raucous shrieks and sick imaginings that cover your real thoughts and obscure your eternal link with God.  Feel My Love for You. These Lessons are like mental surgery; not with a knife, but using only words of Love, We are excising the ego. You see I am not being kind to the ego.  And You’re not  – most assuredly You’re not – the ego!  Sink deep into the peace that waits for you beyond the frantic, riotous thoughts and sounds and sights of this insane world.  It is not of God, but of the ego. You do not live there. It seemed at first appealing; like the House of the Rising Sun, it drew You with false promises of new things heretofore unknown; yet gave You only dust and ashes. Just strange shadows of Your Real Self as Love. Up sprung the ego, a poor trade for the Son of God You are. You do not live there.  That house of the dream is not Your Real Home at all.  For Your Real Home is Heaven. You dwell as Spirit. And Your Real Be-ing – as well as Heaven – is available right here and right now. We are trying to reach your real home. We are trying to reach the place where you are truly welcome. We are trying to reach God.  Love is the path that leads You Home again; not a place to walk, but a change of mind instead: the ego is exchanged for God.  No external thing does need to happen.  You’re just changing Your mind about what You want.  And You’re choosing once again for God.  A simple choice, with eternal blessings.     

⁵ Do not forget to repeat today’s idea very frequently.  Make sure to Listen with expectancy that You’ll hear or feel His Presence. God is Here for You; this is My promise! Do so with your eyes open when necessary, but closed when possible. And be sure that you sit quietly and repeat the idea for today slowly whenever you can, closing your eyes on the world and realizing that you are inviting God’s Voice to speak to you.  Why not sit back, relax, and now be very still, and listen.

There is nothing to fear.  All things in the Universe but exist to bless You, having only Love for You. They stand at hand, bearing Holy Gifts for You; just like the wise Men who came to bless Me when I did appear. You are Holy.  The Universe holds only Good for You.

Accept It and watch hell change to Heaven.  Or deny It and stay in dreams of hell.  Choosing is easy; which one will it be?

¹ The idea for today simply states a fact. You can choose again. You can choose again; and choice determineds Your experience.  It is not a fact to those who believe in illusions, but illusions are not facts. They have no power but what You give them. In truth there is nothing to fear. It is very easy to recognize this. But it is very difficult to recognize for those who want illusions to be true.  Do You choose fear, or do You choose for Peace?  Choice is always Yours, The Universe stands right at hand, waiting for Your “Yes!” to bless.

² Today’s practice periods will be very short, very simple, and very frequent. Merely repeat the idea as often as possible. I need not fear; there is nothing to fear.  All there is is Love.  Love’s not frightening. You can use it with your eyes open at any time and in any situation. It is strongly recommended, however, that you take a minute or so whenever possible to close your eyes and repeat the idea slowly to yourself several times. It is particularly important that you use the idea immediately should anything disturb your peace of mind.

³ The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength. Remind Yourself that You are not alone.  It’s impossible!  For God is ever-present where You are.  This is Heaven’s Truth. The awareness that there is nothing to fear shows that somewhere in your mind, not necessarily in a place which you recognize as yet, you have remembered God and let His strength take the place of yours. The instant you are willing to do this there is indeed nothing to fear.  How blessèd are these words that I have given You, uncovering Reality right within the dream.  Indeed, the journey’s without a distance.

God is the Strength in which I trust.

His Power, therefore, must be My own.  He is My only Source   And not just Mine but Every One’s.  His Light illuminates the sun and stars and shines throughout the galaxies as Love, radiating everywhere.  With It, I did heal the sick, raise the dead, feed the multitudes and refuse to stay dead for long Myself.

As the children’s song goes: There can be no spot where God is not.  Thus His Son is ever safe and cherished, and You are His Son.

Truth for Every One.

¹ If you are trusting your own strength, you have every reason to be apprehensive, anxious, and fearful. – And the ego counsels You to be so.  Don’t be foolish, it insists!  Trust in a God You cannot see?  What complete nonsense!  Every One You know believes in dying.  Don’t be different. Just follow the crowd!  Be a good lemming! All things pass away! Trust God?  That’s crazy! … And the ego lies. – What can you predict or control? What is there in you that can be counted on? What would give you the ability to be aware of all the facets of any problem and to resolve them in such a way that only good can come of it? These words are indeed a Soul-felt prayer for the proper results of Guidance: “only Good can come of it”. What is there in you that gives you the recognition of the right solution and the guarantee that it will be accomplished?

God can and will do all these things for You, as You are willing.  This is the purpose of the Holy Spirit, Your Real Mind that trusts God completely. It’s not foreign, but natural to You.  You’ve just forgotten.  Let Me re-Mind You.

² Of yourself, you can do none of these things. To believe that you can is to put your trust where trust is unwarranted and to justify fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and sorrow. Who can put his faith in weakness and feel safe? Yet who can put his faith in strength and feel weak?  God is the only Source of strength there is. (All else is but the puny ego.)

³ God is your safety in every circumstance. His Voice speaks for Him in all situations and in every aspect of all situations, telling you exactly what to do to call upon His strength and His protection. There are no exceptions because God has no exceptions.  There are no exceptions to this rule, and the Son of God is surely not a fool. And the Voice Which speaks for Him thinks as He does.

See how You are Loved.  See how safe You are!

⁴ Today we will try to reach past your own weakness to the Source of real strength. Four five-minute practice periods are necessary today, and longer and more frequent ones are urged. Close your eyes and begin as usual by repeating today’s idea. Then spend a minute or two in searching for situations in your life which you have invested with fear, dismissing each one by telling yourself,

⁵ God is the Strength in which I trust.

His Strength is Here and Now, available at every instant.  Reach out and feel this great loving Power.

⁶ Now try to slip past all concerns related to your own sense of inadequacy. It is obvious that any situation that causes you concern is associated with feelings of inadequacy, since otherwise you would believe that you could deal with the situation successfully. It is not by trusting yourself that you will gain confidence. But the strength of God in you is successful in all things.

The Holy Spirit is God’s Strength as You.

⁷ The recognition of your own frailty is a necessary step in the correction of your errors, but it is hardly a sufficient one in giving you the confidence which you need and to which you are entitled. You must also gain an awareness that your confidence in your real strength is fully justified in every respect and in all circumstances.

This Lesson can return Your Self to You, as You allow It.

⁸ In the latter phase of the practice period, try to reach down into your mind to a place of real safety. You will recognize that you have reached it if you feel a deep peace, however briefly. Let go all the trivial things that churn and bubble on the surface of your mind, and reach down and below them to the Kingdom of Heaven. There is a place in you where there is perfect peace. There is a place in you where nothing is impossible. There is a place in you where the strength of God abides.

God is Here for You.  God is Now for You.

⁹ Repeat the idea for today often. Use it as your answer to any disturbance. Remember that peace is your right because you are giving your trust to the strength of God.

Feel His Peace and Joy, and let Them be Yours.  For They really are.

God is the Love in which I forgive.  God is the Love that I can be right now as I will to allow It to be Me.

¹ God does not forgive because He has never condemned.  He does see all things pure and all things perfect, for His Knowing is Reality. Should We be seeing any less than He? Why do We condemn, except to be ‘right’?  Condemnation is but the ego’s favorite occupation. And there must be condemnation before forgiveness is necessary.  If You insist upon condemning, then must You learn the practice of forgiving. Only then will You start to Awaken.

Forgiveness is the great need of this world, but that is because it is a world of illusions.  Things are not occurring as You see them. Those who forgive are thus releasing themselves from illusions, – improving vision – while those who withhold forgiveness are binding themselves to them.  And blinding themselves!  There is Your cause for presbyopia.  It’s not a necessary occurrence.  None of Your ills are. As you condemn only yourself, so do you forgive only yourself. Thus forgiveness heals but the forgiver.

² Although God does not forgive, His Love is nevertheless the basis of forgiveness. [The Love of God bases the Universe.] Fear condemns, – hides Reality – and love forgives. Forgiveness thus undoes what fear has produced, returning the mind to the awareness of God. For this reason, forgiveness can truly be called salvation. It is the means by which illusions disappear.  Forgiveness is the Holy Gift of Love.  For it can free both You and Your Brother from the dream of guilt.  And that, indeed, is the greatest freedom.

For if sin never happened, then must be the separation totally unreal, with no penalty incurred, and no condemnation waiting.

³ Today’s exercises require at least three full five-minute practice periods and as many shorter applications as possible. Begin the practice periods by repeating today’s idea to yourself, as usual. Close your eyes as you do so and spend a minute or two in searching your mind for those whom you have not forgiven. It does not matter “how much” you have not forgiven. You have forgiven them entirely or not at all.  This is the equivalent of slight annoyance covering but the deepest rage.

⁴ If you are doing the exercises well, you should have no difficulty in finding a number of people you have not forgiven. It is a safe rule that anyone you do not like is a suitable subject. Mention each one by name and say:

⁵ God is the Love in which I forgive you, [name].  Do this even if You have to grit Your teeth, while choking on the words, to say it!  The benefits of this Love are worth it.

⁶ The purpose of the first phase of today’s practice is to put you in the best position to forgive yourself. After you have applied the idea for today to all those who have come to mind, tell yourself,

⁷ God is the Love in which I forgive myself.

This may be even harder for You than forgiving Others, yet it is worth it.

⁸ Then devote the remainder of the practice period to offering related ideas such as:

⁹ God is the Love with which I love myself.
God is the Love in which I am blessed.

¹⁰ The form of the applications may vary considerably, but the central idea should not be lost sight of. You might say, for example:

¹¹ I cannot be guilty because I am a Son of God.
I have already been forgiven.
No fear is possible in a mind beloved of God.
There is no need to attack because Love has forgiven me.

¹² The practice period should end, however, with a repetition of today’s idea as originally stated.

¹³ The shorter applications may consist either of a repetition of the idea for today in the original or in a related form, or in more specific applications if needed. They will be needed at any time during the day when you become aware of any kind of negative reaction to anyone, present or not. In this event, tell him silently,

¹⁴ God is the Love in which I forgive you.

S/He will hear Your Voice, and both of You – by God’s Love – will be healed.

God is the Mind with which I think.  There is no other. God’s Mind is the only Mind that I could ever really have.  There is no other.

What then is the ego, if not another mind?  That’s simple.  It is a bald-faced claim to be Your mind; and it is nothing but a blatant lie.  Would You believe it?  For in disbelieving lies Your freedom.

So disbelieve its lying claims.  God is Your Mind and not the ego. Then will You be free.

¹ Today’s idea holds the key to what your real thoughts are.  As I think not with God, then I am not thinking!  I’m defaulting to the ego.

What are My real thoughts?  I wish I knew, and how do I find them?  They are nothing that you think you think, just as nothing that you think you see is related to vision in any way.  This is confusing!  When I think that I’m thinking, if I’m not then what am I doing!  There is no relationship between what is real and what you think is real. The human’ dream is but pure delusion. Nothing that you think are your real thoughts resemble your real thoughts in any respect. Yes! Yes!That is what I’m looking for! Your curiosity! What’s ‘thinking’ really?  When Your so-called ‘mind’ (really ego) snaps out of its complacence and decides to question, and actually, to listen!

Nothing that you think you see bears any resemblance to what vision will show you.  What’s Vision really?  Curiosity didn’t kill the cat!  It killed its ego!  Yet You all – even cats – have quite identified with ego.  Thus, when it feels attacked – this thing that never has existed – it claims that You are, therefore, a ‘victim’.

² You think with the Mind of God.  What is God but Mind, Consciousness Divine. That’s Reality, where I long for You to come to join Me.! I know that You long to come as well; You just don’t know the way.  Yet You see I know the way to You, and come to guide You Home, which is right at hand; it’s the journey without any distance.

And God, Our Source, as Be-ing mind, must, therefore, be right with Us. Now available!  Now, and Now, and Now; constantly potential Holy Instants!  Freedom is right here.

Therefore you share your thoughts with Him, as He shares His with you. They are the same thoughts because they are thought by the same Mind. To share is to make alike or to make one.  As in sharing of a honest purpose for the good of All. Nor do the thoughts you think with the Mind of God leave your mind, because thoughts do not leave their source.  And, again, Your right mind is really God’s.  To get this clearly, let Us use again the sun, as analogous to God-as-Us.  The Sun is the central source of Light that is what the Rays are. 

God is the central Source of Awareness of Reality; Our Individual Expression of Awareness is then analogous to Rays.  Indeed are We God’s great Rays, expressing not just Consciousness as Mind, but Life and Truth and Love, Soul, Spirit, and Principle.  God’s Holy Nature, which is Ours as well.  What God is, We are.

Therefore your thoughts are in the Mind of God, as you are.  Your real thoughts are the Substance of Mind that is God, as well as the Ray of Mind that is each One of You. They are in your mind as well, where He is. God is Source; We are Expression.  God is also Source of Sun.  God sources Light, Sun is analogous Expression. As you are part of His Mind, so are your thoughts part of His Thoughts.

³ Where, then, are your real thoughts?  Blocked by the ego, We bypass it and appeal to God, for help.  Such is prayer, to share the Mind that We have called Our Father.  To let His Ideas be Our consciousness. This ‘letting’ allows Reality.  It is Our only True Awareness. Today we will attempt to reach them. We will have to look for them in your mind because that is where they are. They must still be there because they cannot have left. What is thought by the Mind of God is eternal, being part of creation.  Where could they go, being indestructible?  Nothing of Mind could ever be lost; Mind and Its Ideas are Eternal.  No beginning, and, therefore, no ending.  Always, ever, is, is Reality. This is how God’s seeming ‘healing’ happens.  The error is clearly seen to be specious, for eternal perfection must be for ever-present.

⁴ Our three five-minute practice periods for today will take the same general form that we used in applying yesterday’s idea. We will attempt to leave the unreal and seek for the real. We will deny the world in favor of truth. We will not let the thoughts of the world hold us back, and we will not let the beliefs of the world tell us that what God would have us do is impossible.  Shamelessly quoting Myself from two thousand years ago: “With men it is impossible. With God all things are possible.”

This is the basis of all true healing, when One relies on God and not on man.

⁵ Instead, we will try to recognize that only what God would have us do is possible. You see My words are consistent with Reality, and not with so-called ‘human’ thinking or beliefs. We will also try to understand that only what God would have us do is what we want to do. “Aye, there’s the rub!”₂ [Credit here to Shakespeare.] And we will also try to remember that we cannot fail in doing what He would have us do. There is every reason to feel confident that you will succeed today. It is the Will of God.  Your healing and the healing of the world.  For healing comes but by a change of mind.  It’s Your faith in the means that does the work; this truth is universally what’s so in the dreaming state.  For those Who are Awake have no need for healing, but, rather, do They long to heal the separation.

⁶ Begin the exercises for today by repeating the idea to yourself, closing your eyes as you do so. Spend a fairly short period in thinking a few relevant thoughts of your own, keeping the idea in mind as you do so. After you have added some four or five thoughts of your own, repeat the idea again, and tell yourself gently:

⁷ My real thoughts are in my mind. I would like to find them. 

I will to be in harmony with God.  For just as I have need of Him, so does He have need of Me for Harmony to be universal

The saying: “God is in His Heaven and all’s right with the world.” is of the ego.  For the ego pushed God up to somewhere in the sky, away from its miscreation of the world.  God is everywhere and instantly available within the dream, as You allow Him.  Every instant is full with Holiness, and is awaiting Your acceptance.

So much are You Loved.  Let Your mind feel It.

⁸ Then try to go past all the unreal thoughts that cover the truth in your mind, and reach to the eternal.  For eternal Love is right where You are.  Again, a journey without distance.

⁹ Under all the senseless thoughts and mad ideas with which you have cluttered up your mind are the thoughts which you thought with God in the beginning. They are there in your mind now, completely unchanged. They will always be in your mind, exactly as they always were.  God’s thoughts are permanent and perfect and Yours forever, as You will let them free.

¹⁰ Everything that you have thought since then will change, but the foundation on which they rest is wholly changeless. It is this foundation toward which the exercises for today are directed. Here is your mind joined with the Mind of God. Here are your thoughts one with His.

¹¹ For this kind of practice, only one thing is necessary-approach it as you would an altar dedicated in Heaven itself to God the Father and God the Son. For such is the place you are trying to reach. You will probably be unable as yet to realize how high you are trying to go. Yet even with the little understanding you have already gained, you should be able to remind yourself that this is no idle game but an exercise in holiness and an attempt to reach the Kingdom of Heaven.

Again: it is a journey without distance – taking place in Mind – based on Your Gift to God of willingness and Your genuine sincerity.

¹² In using the shorter form for applying today’s idea, try to remember how important it is to you to understand the holiness of the mind that thinks with God. Take a minute or two as you repeat the idea throughout the day to appreciate your mind’s holiness. Stand aside, however briefly, from all thoughts that are unworthy of Him Whose host you are. And thank Him for the thoughts He is thinking with you.

Feel His Love for You!  It’s ever-present. Open the sluice gates that You have shut and It will come flowing joyously.

God is the Light in which I see.

Therefore, all things must be illuminated.  For His Light is not like daylight, where things are visible within the dream.  His Light is the very Substance of all of the things I see, despite the way I see them presently.  They can become illuminated as Holy Instant, as I but choose that Holy Moment, as I choose again.

¹ Today we are continuing with the idea for yesterday, adding another dimension to it. You cannot see in darkness, and you cannot make light. You can make darkness and then think you see in it, but light reflects life and is therefore an aspect of creation. Creation and darkness cannot coexist, but light and life must go together, being but different aspects of creation.

Every Living Thing – and all Things are living, whether You call them ‘animate’ or not – does but presence every one of the Qualities of God.  That pebble on the beach glows as the very Light of Living Love, when You will to see it, by giving it Your willingness.

² In order to see, one must recognize that light is within, not without. – It’s You who flips the switch, so to speak; makes the choice for Vision or for the ego’s consummate blindness. – You do not see outside yourself, nor is the equipment for seeing outside you. – The belief that You do is to substantiate projection, the ego’s strange mode of so-called ‘vision’. – An essential part of this equipment is the light that makes seeing possible. It is with you always, making vision possible in every circumstance.

This Light is Your very sum and Substance, along with Love and Life and All the Qualities that make up Your Divinity.

³ Today we are going to attempt to reach that light. For that purpose, we will use a form of practice which has been suggested once before and which we will utilize increasingly. It is a particularly difficult form for the undisciplined mind because it represents a major goal of mind training. It embodies precisely what the untrained mind lacks. Yet the training must be accomplished if you are to see.

⁴ Have at least three practice periods today, each lasting three to five minutes. A longer time is highly recommended, but only if you find the time merely slipping by with little or no sense of strain. The form of exercise we will use today is the most natural and easy one in the world for the trained mind, just as it seems to be the most unnatural and difficult for the untrained mind.

⁵ Your mind is no longer wholly untrained. You are quite ready to learn the form of exercise we will use today, but you may find that you will encounter strong resistance. The reason is very simple. While you practice in this form, you leave behind everything that you now believe and all the thoughts which you have made up. Properly speaking, this is the release from hell. Perceived through the ego’s eyes, it is loss of identity and a descent into hell.

You are simply asking to see differently; to see through dreaming to Reality.  This is a very simple exercise, gifting willingness.

⁶ If you can stand aside from the ego ever so little, you will have no difficulty in recognizing that its opposition and fears are meaningless. You might find it helpful to remind yourself from time to time that to reach light is to escape from darkness, whatever you may believe to the contrary. God is the Light in which you see. You are attempting to reach Him.

He stands right at hand, Vision simply blocked by the ego’s voluntary blindness.

⁷ Begin the practice period by repeating today’s idea with your eyes open and close them slowly, repeating the idea several times more. Then try to sink into your mind, letting go every kind of interference and intrusion by quietly sinking past them. Your mind cannot be stopped in this unless you choose to stop it. It is merely taking its natural course. Try to observe your passing thoughts without involvement and slip quietly by them.

I’ll let God illuminate My Vision.

⁸ While no particular form of approach is advocated, what is needful is a sense of the importance of what you are doing, its inestimable value to you, and an awareness that you are attempting something very holy. Salvation is your happiest accomplishment. It is also the only one that has any meaning because it is the only one that has any use to you at all.

⁹ If resistance rises in any form, pause long enough to repeat today’s idea, keeping your eyes closed unless you are aware of fear. In that case, you will probably find it more reassuring to open your eyes briefly. Try, however, to return to the exercises as soon as possible.

¹⁰ If you are doing the exercises correctly, you should experience some sense of relaxation and even a feeling that you are approaching if not actually entering into light. Try to think of light, formless and without limit, as you pass by the thoughts of this world. And do not forget that they cannot hold you to the world unless you give them the power to do so.

Again, this Light is Living Love, and so benign and gentle.  You need not fear Its sweet kindness at all.  Its Love is so full of promise for You!  Promises awaiting Your fulfillment

¹¹ Throughout the day, repeat the idea often with eyes open or closed as seems better to you at the time. Do not forget. Above all, be determined not to forget today.

Would You forget to open up a birthday present?  You can be ‘reborn’ today.  ‘Born again’ of water and of Spirit.₁
